Psalm 1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in the ways of the wicked,
Or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the seat of ridiculers,
But whose delight is in God's law,
Who meditates on God's law day and night.
They will be like a tree planted by a stream of water that produces fruit in its season,
Whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
The wicked are not so.
They are like the shaft which the wind blows away.
Therefore,
The wicked will not be able to stand in the judgment,
Or sinners in the company of the righteous.
For God knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 2 Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take a stand,
And the rulers take plan together,
Against God and against His anointed,
Saying,
Let's break their control and free their chains from us.
God in heaven laughs.
The Lord scoffs at them.
He will speak to them in His anger,
And terrify them with His wrath,
Saying,
I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion.
I will tell of the Lord's ruling.
God said to me,
You are my son.
Today I have become your father.
Ask of me and I will give the nations as your inheritance,
The remotest parts of the earth as your possession.
You will break them with an iron rod.
You will smash them into pieces like pottery.
So be wise,
You kings.
Understand,
You rulers of earth.
Serve God with respect and rejoice with trembling.
Give sincere honor to the Son,
Or He will be angry and you will perish,
For His wrath will soon be kindled.
Blessed are those who take shelter in Him.
Psalm 3 A prayer sung by David when he fled from his son Absalom.
God,
My enemies have increased.
There are many who rise against me.
Many say of me,
God will not help him.
But You,
God,
Are a shield around me.
You are my glory and the one who lifts up my head.
I cry out to God,
And He answers me out of His holy hill.
I laid down and slept,
And I woke up again because God sustains me.
I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people who are against me on every side.
Arise,
God.
Save me,
My God.
For You have struck all of my enemies on the cheek.
You have broken the teeth of the wicked.
Salvation belongs to God.
May Your blessing be on Your people.
Psalm 4 For the chief musician on stringed instruments.
A prayer sung by David.
Answer me when I call,
God of my righteousness.
Give me relief from my suffering.
Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
People,
How long will my glory be turned into shame?
Will you love arrogance and chase after lies?
Know that God has set apart for Himself those who are godly.
God will hear me when I call Him.
Stand in awe and don't sin.
Search your own heart on your bed and be still.
Offer righteous sacrifices.
Put your trust in God.
Many say,
Who will bless us?
God,
Let the light of Your face shine on us.
You have put joy in my heart more than when grain and new wine increase.
In peace I will lay and sleep.
For You,
God alone,
Make me live in safety.
Psalm 5 For the chief musician with the flutes.
A prayer sung by David.
Listen to my words,
God.
Consider my thoughts.
Listen to my cry,
My King and my God,
For I pray to You.
God,
In the morning You will hear my voice.
In the morning I will lay my request before You and will wait expectantly.
For You are not a God who likes wickedness.
Evil can't live with You.
The arrogant will not stand in Your sight.
You hate all workers of sin.
You will destroy those who speak lies.
God hates the murderous and deceitful man.
But as for me,
In the abundance of Your love and kindness,
I will come into Your house.
I will bow toward Your holy temple in reverence of You.
Lead me,
God,
In Your righteousness because of my enemies.
Make Your way straight before my face.
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth.
Their heart is set on destruction.
Their throat is an open tomb.
They flatter with their tongue.
Hold them guilty,
God.
Let them fall by their own plans.
Throw them out in the crowd of their sins.
For they have rebelled against You.
But let all those who take refuge in You rejoice.
Let them always shout for joy because You defend them.
Let them also who love Your name be joyful in You,
For You will bless the righteous.
God,
You will surround them with favor as with a shield.
Psalm 6 For the chief musician on stringed instruments,
Upon the eight-stringed instrument.
A prayer song by David.
God,
Don't rebuke me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.
Have mercy on me,
God,
For I am faint.
God,
Heal me,
For my bones are troubled.
My soul is also in great agony.
But You,
God,
How long?
Return,
God,
Deliver my soul and save me because of Your faithful love.
For in death there is no memory of You.
In the grave,
Who will give You thanks?
I am exhausted from my groaning.
Every night I flood my bed from crying.
I drench my couch with tears.
My eyes waste away because of grief.
They grow old because of my enemies.
Leave me,
All you who sin.
For God has heard the voice of my crying.
God has heard my request.
God accepts my prayer.
May all my enemies be ashamed and disheartened.
They will turn back.
They will be suddenly disgraced.
Psalm 7 A meditation by David that he sang to God concerning the words of Cush,
The Benjamite.
God,
My God,
I take shelter in You.
Save me from all those who pursue me and deliver me,
Or they will tear apart my soul like a lion,
Ripping it in pieces,
While there is no one to save me.
God,
My God,
If I have done this,
If there is sin in my hands,
If I have done evil to him who was at peace with me,
Yes,
If I have done wrong to him who was not my enemy,
Let the enemy pursue me and overtake me.
Yes,
Let him beat my life down to the earth and leave me in the dust.
Arise,
God,
In Your anger.
Lift up Yourself against the rage of my enemies.
Awake for me.
You have commanded judgment.
Let the people surround You.
Rule over them from on high.
God judges the people.
Judge me,
God,
According to my righteousness and to my integrity.
Let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end,
But secure the righteous.
Their minds and hearts are searched by the righteous God.
My shield is God,
Who saves the right in heart.
God is a righteous judge.
Yes,
A God who has anger every day.
If a man doesn't repent,
He will sharpen his sword.
He has bent and strung his bow.
He has prepared the instruments of death.
He makes ready his flaming arrows.
Look at the works of the sinful.
Yes,
He plans trouble and tells lies.
He has dug a hole and has fallen into the pit that he has made.
The trouble he causes will return to his own head.
His violence will come down on himself.
I will give thanks to God,
According to His righteousness,
And will sing praise to God Most High.
Psalm 8 The moon and the stars which you have designed.
What is man that you would think of him?
What are people that you would care for them?
For you have made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor.
You make him ruler over the works of your hands.
You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and cattle and the animals of the field,
The birds of the sky,
The fish of the sea,
And whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
God our Lord,
How majestic is your name in all the earth!
Psalm 9 For the chief musician,
Set to The Death of the Sun,
A prayer song by David.
I will give thanks to God with my whole heart.
I will tell of all your marvelous works.
I will be glad and rejoice in you.
I will sing praise to your name,
Most High.
When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and perish in your presence.
For you have preserved my cause.
You sit on the throne judging righteously.
You have rebuked the nations.
You have destroyed the wicked.
You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
The enemy is overtaken by endless destruction.
The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.
But God reigns forever.
He has prepared his throne for judgment.
He will judge the world in righteousness.
He will righteously judge the people.
God will also be a fortress for the troubled,
A fortress in times of trouble.
Those who know your name will put their trust in you.
For you,
God,
Have not abandoned those who seek you.
Sing praises to God who lives in Zion and tell all the people what he has done.
For he who avenges blood remembers them.
He doesn't forget the cry of the hurting.
Have mercy on me,
God.
See my condition brought on by those who hate me and lift me up from the gates of death so that I may tell all of your praise.
I will rejoice in your salvation in the gates of Jerusalem.
The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made.
In the net which they hid,
Their own foot is caught.
God has made himself known.
He has executed judgment.
The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands.
The wicked will be turned back to the grave,
As will all the nations that forget God.
For the needy will not always be forgotten,
Or the hope of the poor perish forever.
Arise,
God.
Don't let man succeed.
Let the nations be judged in your sight.
Put them in fear,
God.
Let the nations know that they are only men.
Psalm 10 Why do you stand far off,
God?
Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
In arrogance,
The wicked hunt down the weak.
They are caught in the schemes that they make.
For the wicked boasts of his evil desires.
He praises the greedy and rejects God.
The wicked,
In the pride of his mind,
Has no room in his thoughts for God.
His ways are prosperous at all times.
He is arrogant,
And your laws are far from his thoughts.
As for all his enemies,
He scoffs at them.
He says in his heart,
I will not be shaken.
I will never have trouble.
His mouth is full of cursing,
Lies,
And cruelty.
On his tongue is damage and evil.
He lies in hiding near the villages.
He ambushes and murders the innocent.
His eyes are secretly looking at the helpless.
He lurks in secret as a lion in hiding.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless.
He catches the helpless when he captures them in his net.
The helpless are crushed.
They collapse.
They fall under his strength.
He says in his heart,
God has forgotten.
He hides his face.
He will never see it.
Arise,
God.
God,
Lift up your hand.
Don't forget the helpless.
Why does the wicked person reject God and say in his heart,
God won't hold me accountable?
But you do see trouble and grief.
You consider it and take note.
You help the victim and the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked.
As for the evil man,
Look for his wickedness until you find none.
God is king forever and ever.
The nations will perish out of his land.
God,
You have heard the desire of the humble.
You will prepare their heart.
You will hear to help the fatherless and the oppressed so that man may terrify them no more.
Psalm 11 For the Chief Musician by David In God I take refuge.
How can you say to me,
Flee like a bird to a mountain?
For look,
The wicked bend their bows.
They ready their arrows on the strings so that they may shoot in darkness at the righteous.
If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?
God is in his holy temple.
God is on his throne in heaven.
His eyes see.
His eyes examine the people.
God examines the righteous.
But he hates the wicked and those who love violence.
On the wicked,
He will rain blazing coals,
Fire,
Sulfur,
And scorching wind will be the cup they drink.
For God is righteous.
He loves righteousness.
The righteous will see his face.
Psalm 12 For the Chief Musician,
For the eight-stringed instrument.
Psalm of David Help God,
For the godly are no more.
For the faithful fail among the people.
Everyone lies to his neighbor.
They speak with flattering lips and with a deceitful heart.
May God cut off all flattering lips and the tongue that boasts.
They have said,
With our tongue we will succeed.
Our words are our own.
Who can rule over us?
Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy,
I will now arise,
Says God.
I will guard him from those who harm him.
God's words are flawless.
As silver refined in a clay furnace,
Purified seven times.
You will keep them,
God.
You will always preserve them.
The wicked are everywhere when what is despicable is praised among the people.
Psalm 13 For the Chief Musician,
A prayer song by David.
How long,
God?
Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long will I be troubled,
Having grief in my heart every day?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
Look and answer me,
God,
My God.
Give light to my eyes so I will not die,
So that my enemies can't say we have overcome him and rejoice when I fall.
But I trust in your love and kindness.
My heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing to God because he has been good to me.
Psalm 14 For the Chief Musician,
By David.
The fool says to himself,
There is no God.
They are corrupt.
They have done evil things.
There is no one who does good.
God looked down from heaven on the people to see if there were any who understood,
Who sought after God.
They have all gone off course.
They have,
Together,
Become corrupt.
There is no one who does good,
No,
Not one.
All those who sin have no knowledge.
They devour my people as they eat bread and don't call on God.
They have great fear,
For God is with the righteous.
You sinners frustrate the plan of the poor,
But God will be their shelter.
Oh,
That the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion.
When God restores the fortunes of his people,
Then Jacob will rejoice and Israel will be glad.
Psalm 15 A Prayer Song,
By David.
God,
Who will live in your sanctuary?
Who will live on your holy hill?
He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart.
He who doesn't slander with his tongue and does no evil to his friend and doesn't smear his fellow man,
Those who despise a vile man,
But who honors those who fear God.
He who keeps a promise even when it hurts and doesn't change.
He who doesn't overcharge when he lends out his money and doesn't take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things will never be shaken.
Psalm 16 A Poem,
By David.
Protect me,
God,
For I take shelter in you.
I have said to God,
You are my Lord.
Apart from you,
I have nothing good.
As for the saints who are in the earth,
They are the excellent ones that I greatly admire.
Those who offer gifts to another God will have their sorrows multiplied.
I will not participate in their drink offerings of blood or speak the names of their gods.
God,
You have given me my share and my cup.
You have made me secure.
You have greatly blessed me.
Yes,
I have a good inheritance.
I will praise God,
Who has given me instruction.
Yes,
In my heart He instructs me in the night.
I have set God always before me,
Because He is at my right hand.
I will not be moved.
Therefore,
My heart is glad,
And I proclaim my joy.
My body will also be safe,
For you will not leave my soul in the grave.
Neither will you allow your Holy One to remain in the tomb.
You will show me the path of life.
In your presence,
There is fullness of joy.
In your right hand,
There are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 17,
A prayer by David God,
Hear my righteous request.
Listen to my prayer that doesn't come from deceitful lips.
Let my sentence come from you.
Let your eyes see what is correct.
You have verified my heart.
You have visited me in the night.
You have tried me and found nothing.
I have made up my mind that I will not disobey.
As for the acts of people,
By the word you have given,
I have kept myself from the ways of the violent.
My steps have held firm to your paths.
My feet have not slipped.
I have called on you,
For you will answer me,
God.
Turn your ear to me.
Hear my speech.
Show your marvelous love and kindness.
You who save those who take shelter by your right hand from their enemies,
Keep me as the apple of your eye.
Hide me under the shadow of your wings from the wicked who oppress me,
My deadly enemies who surround me.
They close up their callous hearts.
With their mouth,
They speak proudly.
They have now surrounded me.
They set their minds on bringing me down.
They are like a lion that is greedy of his prey,
As it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
Arise,
God.
Confront them.
Throw them down.
Deliver me from the wicked by your sword,
From men by your hand,
God,
From these people whose reward is in this life.
You provide for your cherished ones.
Your children have plenty,
And they store up wealth for their children.
As for me,
I will see your face in righteousness.
I will be satisfied when I awake and see your form.
Psalm 18,
For the chief musician,
By David,
The servant of God,
Who spoke to God the words of this song,
The day God delivered him from all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said,
I love you,
God,
My strength.
God is my rock,
My fortress,
And my deliverer,
My God,
My rock,
In whom I take refuge,
My shield,
And the horn of my salvation,
My high tower.
I call on God,
Who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death surrounded me.
The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
The cords of the grave were around me.
The snares of death came on me.
In my distress,
I called on God and cried to my God,
And he heard my voice out of his temple.
My cry,
He heard.
Then the earth shook and trembled.
The foundations of the mountains quaked and were shaken,
Because he was angry.
Smoke went out of his nostrils.
Consuming fire came out of his mouth.
Coals were kindled by it.
He split the heavens and came down.
Thick darkness was under his feet.
He rode on a cherub and flew.
Yes,
He soared on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his hiding place,
His pavilion around him,
Darkness of waters,
Thick clouds of the skies.
At the brightness before him,
Thick clouds passed,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
God also thundered in the sky.
The Most High uttered his voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
He shot his arrows and scattered them.
He sent them running with great lightning bolts.
Then the channels of waters appeared.
The foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke,
God,
At the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
He held me from on high.
He took me.
He drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy,
From those who hated me,
For they were too mighty for me.
They came on me in the day of my tragedy,
But God was my support.
He brought me out into a large place.
He delivered me because he delighted in me.
God has rewarded me according to my righteousness.
According to the innocence of my hands,
He has rewarded me,
For I have kept the ways of God and not departed sinfully from my God.
For all his laws were before me.
I didn't ignore his decrees.
I was also blameless with him.
I kept myself from sin.
Therefore,
God has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanliness of my hands in his sight.
With the merciful,
You will show yourself merciful.
With the flawless man,
You will show yourself flawless.
With the pure,
You will show yourself pure.
With the crooked,
You will show your wisdom,
For you will save the distressed people.
But those who are arrogant,
You will bring down,
For you will light my lamp,
God.
My God will light up my darkness,
For by you,
I advance through an army.
By my God,
I leap over a wall.
As for God,
His way is perfect.
God's word is tried.
He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.
For who is God,
Except God?
Who is a rock,
Besides our God?
The God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like deer's feet.
He sets me on high places.
He teaches my hands to war.
So that my arms bend a bow of bronze.
You have also given me the shield of your salvation.
Your right hand sustains me.
Your gentleness has made me great.
You have widened the path under me.
My feet have not slipped.
I will pursue my enemies and overtake them.
I won't turn away until they are destroyed.
I will strike them through,
So that they will not be able to rise again.
They will fall under my feet.
For you have armed me with strength for the battle.
Those who rose up against me,
You have subdued under me.
You have also made my enemies flee from me,
So that I might cut off those who hate me.
They cried out,
But there was no one to save,
Even to God.
But he didn't answer them.
Then I beat them down as small as the dust in the wind.
I threw them out like sludge in the streets.
You have delivered me from the evil strivings of the people.
You have made me the head of the nations.
A people whom I have not known will serve me.
As soon as they hear of me,
They will obey me.
The foreigners will submit themselves to me.
The foreigners will fade away and will come trembling out of their fortresses.
God lives.
Blessed be my rock.
Exalted be the God of my salvation.
He is the God who executes vengeance for me and subdues people under me.
He rescues me from my enemies.
Yes,
You lift me up from those who rise up against me.
You deliver me from the violent.
Therefore,
I will give thanks to you,
God,
Among the nations and will sing praises to your name.
He gives great deliverance to his king and shows his love and kindness to his anointed,
To David and to his offspring forevermore.
Psalm 19 for the Chief Musician A Prayer Song by David The heavens declare the glory of God.
The skies show the majesty of his work.
Day after day they pour out speech and night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice has gone out through all the earth.
Their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
Which is like a groom coming out of his room,
Like a strong man rejoicing to run his path.
His going out is from one side of the heavens to the other.
There is nothing hidden from its heat.
God's law is perfect,
Restoring the soul.
God's promise is reliable,
Making simple people wise.
God's rules are right,
Bringing joy to the heart.
God's commandment is pure,
Giving vision for the eyes.
The fear of God is pure,
Enduring forever.
God's laws are right and altogether righteous.
They are to be more desired than gold.
Yes,
Than much fine gold.
Sweeter also than honey and the extract of the honeycomb.
Moreover,
Your servant is worn by them.
And keeping them,
There is great reward.
What person can know all their sins?
Forgive me from hidden sins.
Keep your servant also from arrogant sins.
Let them not have rule over me.
Then I will be upright.
I will be blameless and innocent of great wrongdoing.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.
God my rock and my Redeemer.
Psalm 20 For the Chief Musician A Prayer Song by David May God answer you in the day of trouble.
May the name of the God of Jacob set you up on high and send you help from his sanctuary and give you support from Zion.
May he remember all your offerings and accept your burned sacrifice.
May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans.
We will triumph in your salvation.
In the name of our God,
We will shout your victories.
May God grant all your requests.
Now I know that God saves his anointed.
He will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses.
But we trust in the name of God,
Our God.
They will stumble and fall down.
But we rise up and stand upright.
Save us,
God.
Let the King answer us when we call.
Psalm 21 For the Chief Musician A Prayer Song by David The King rejoices in your strength,
God,
How greatly he rejoices in your salvation.
You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld the request he made.
For you meet him with the blessings of goodness.
You set a crown of fine gold on his head.
He asked life of you and you gave it to him,
Even length of days forever and ever.
His glory is great in your salvation.
You lay honor and majesty on him.
For you make him blessed forever.
You make him glad with joy in your presence.
For the King trusts in God.
Through the love and kindness of the Most High,
He will not be moved.
Your hand will find all of your enemies.
Your right hand will find those who hate you.
You will make them as a fiery furnace in the time of your anger.
God will swallow them up in his wrath.
The fire will devour them.
You will destroy their descendants from the earth and their future from among the people.
For they intended evil against you.
They plotted evil against you which cannot succeed.
For you will make them retreat when you aim drawn bows at their face.
Be exalted,
God,
In your strength,
So we will sing and praise your power.
The praises of Israel.
Our fathers trusted in you.
They trusted and you delivered them.
They cried to you and were delivered.
They trusted in you and were not disappointed.
But I am a worm and not even a man.
A disgrace of men and despised by the people.
All those who see me mock me.
They insult me with their lips.
They shake their heads saying,
He trusts in God.
Let him deliver him.
Let him rescue him since he delights in him.
But you brought me out of the womb.
You made me trust while at my mother's chest.
I was thrown on you from my mother's womb.
You are my God since my birth.
Don't be far from me,
For trouble is near.
For there is no one to help.
Many bulls have surrounded me.
Strong bulls of Bashan have surrounded me.
They open their mouths wide against me,
Like lions tearing prey and roaring.
I am poured out like water.
All my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax.
It is melted within me.
My strength is dried up like broken pottery.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You have brought me into the dust of death.
For dogs have surrounded me.
A company of evildoers have surrounded me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.
I can count all of my bones.
They look and stare at me.
They divide my clothing among them.
They cast lots from my clothing.
But don't be far off,
God.
You are my help.
Hurry to help me.
Deliver my soul from the sword.
My precious life from the power of the dog.
Save me from the lion's mouth.
Yes,
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.
I will declare your name to my brothers.
Among the church,
I will praise you.
You who fear God,
Praise Him.
All you descendants of Jacob,
Glorify Him.
Stand in awe of Him,
All you descendants of Israel.
For He has not despised or hated the affliction of the afflicted.
Neither has He hidden His face from him.
But when he cried to Him,
He heard.
My praise of you comes in the great assembly of believers.
I will pay my vows before those who fear Him.
The humble will eat and be satisfied.
They will praise God who seek after Him.
Let your hearts live forever.
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to God.
All the relatives of the nations will worship before you.
For the kingdom is God's.
He is the ruler over the nations.
All the rich ones of the earth will eat and worship.
All those who go down to the grave will bow before Him.
Even he who can't keep his soul alive.
Posterity will serve Him.
Future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will come and will declare His righteousness to a people that has not yet been born.
For He has done it.
Psalm 23,
A prayer song by David.
God is my shepherd.
I will lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He guides me in the path of righteousness for His name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
For you are with me.
Your rod and your staff,
They comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and love and kindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in God's house forever.
Psalm 24,
A prayer song by David.
He will receive a blessing from God,
Righteousness from the God of His salvation.
This is the generation of those who seek Him,
Who seek your face,
Even Jacob.
Who is the King of glory?
Lift up your head,
You gates.
Yes,
Lift them up,
You eternal doors,
And the King of glory will come in.
God of armies is the King of glory.
Psalm 25 by David.
All the paths of God are love and kindness and truth.
To such as keep His covenant and His commands.
For your namesake,
God,
Pardon my sin,
For it is great.
What man is he who fears God?
He will instruct him in the way that he will choose.
His soul will live in peace.
His children will inherit the land.
The friendship of God is with those who fear Him.
He will show them His promise.
My eyes are ever on God,
For He will rescue my feet out of the net.
Turn to me and have mercy on me,
For I am abandoned and distressed.
The troubles of my heart are enlarged.
Oh,
Bring me out of my distresses.
Consider my distress and my agony.
Forgive all my sins.
Consider my enemies,
For they are many.
They hate me with cruel hatred.
Oh,
Keep my soul and deliver me.
And let me not be disappointed,
For I take refuge in you.
Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
For I wait for you.
God,
Redeem Israel out of all his troubles.
Psalm 26 by David Judge me,
God,
For I have walked in integrity.
I have trusted in God without wavering.
Examine me,
God,
And prove me.
Try my heart and my mind,
For your love and kindness is before my eyes.
I have walked in your truth.
I have not sat with deceitful men,
Neither will I go along with hypocrites.
I hate those who are evil and will not sit with the wicked.
I will wash my hands in innocence,
So I will go before your altar,
God,
So that I may make my voice of thanksgiving be heard.
And tell of all your wondrous deeds.
God,
I love your house,
The place where your glory dwells.
Don't collect my soul with sinners or my life with bloodthirsty men and whose hands is wickedness,
The right hand is full of bribes.
But as for me,
I will walk in integrity.
Redeem me and be merciful to me.
My foot stands on solid ground.
In the congregations,
I will praise God.
Psalm 27 by David God is my light and my salvation.
Whom will I fear?
God is the strength of my life.
Of whom will I be afraid?
When evil people came at me to eat up my flesh,
Those who are my enemies,
They stumbled and fell.
Though an army should take position against me,
My heart will not fear.
Though war should rise against me,
Even then,
I will be confident.
One thing I have asked of God,
That I desire the most,
That I may live in God's house all the days of my life,
To see God's beauty and to learn in His temple.
For in the day of trouble,
He will keep me secretly in His pavilion.
In the secret place of His tabernacle,
He will hide me.
He will lift me up on a rock.
Now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me.
I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tent.
I will sing.
Yes,
I will sing praises to God.
Hear,
God,
When I cry with my voice.
Have mercy on me and answer me.
When you said,
Seek my face,
My heart said to you,
I will seek your face,
God.
Don't hide your face from me.
Don't put your servant away in anger.
You have been my help.
Don't abandon me or forsake me,
God of my salvation.
If my father and mother forsake me,
Then God will lift me up.
Teach me your way,
God.
Lead me in a straight path because of my enemies.
Don't deliver me over to the desire of my enemies.
For liars have risen up against me and breathe out cruelty.
I am still confident of this.
I will see the goodness of God in the land of the living.
I wait for God.
Be strong and let your heart take courage.
Yes,
Wait for God.
Psalm 28 by David To you,
God,
I call.
My rock,
Don't be deaf to me.
For if you are silent to me,
I would become like those who go down into the pit.
Hear my request when I cry to you,
When I lift up my hands toward your most holy place.
Don't take me away with the wicked,
With the sinful who speak of peace with their neighbors,
But harm is in their hearts.
Punish them according to their work and according to the wickedness of their acts.
Punish them according to the work of their hands.
Bring back on them what they deserve.
Because they don't respect the works of God or the work of His hands,
He will break them down and not build them up.
Praise God,
Because He has heard my requests.
God is my strength and my shield.
My heart has trusted in Him and I am helped.
Therefore,
My heart greatly rejoices.
With my song,
I will thank Him.
God is the strength of His people.
He is a stronghold of salvation to His anointed.
Save your people and bless your inheritance.
Be their shepherd also and care for them forever.
Psalm 29 A Prayer Song by David Honor God,
You sons of the mighty.
Honor God's glory and strength.
Honor for the glory of His name.
Worship God in holy living.
God's voice is on the waters.
The God of glory thunders on many waters.
God's voice is powerful.
God's voice is full of majesty.
God's voice breaks the cedar.
Yes,
God breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes them also to skip like a calf.
Lebanon and Syrian like a young wild ox.
God's voice strikes with flashes of lightning.
God's voice shatters the wilderness.
God shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
God's voice makes the deer give birth and strips the forest bare.
In His temple,
Everything says glory.
God sat as king over the flood.
Yes,
God sits as king forever.
God will give strength to His people.
God will bless His people with peace.
Psalm 30 A Song for the Dedication of the Temple by David I will praise you,
God,
For you have raised me up and have not let my enemies rejoice over me.
God,
My God,
I cry to you,
And you have healed me.
God,
You have brought up my soul from the grave.
You have kept me alive so that I will not go down to the pit.
Sing praise to God,
You saints of His.
Give thanks to His holy name,
For His anger lasts but for a moment.
His favor lasts for a lifetime.
Weeping may remain through the night,
But joy comes in the morning.
As for me,
I said in my prosperity,
I will never be moved.
You,
God,
When you favored me,
Made my mountain stand strong.
But when you hid your face,
I was troubled.
I cried to you,
God.
I made petitions to the Lord.
What profit is there in my destruction if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it declare your truth?
Hear,
God,
And have mercy on me.
God,
Be my helper.
You have turned my mourning into dancing for me.
You have removed my funeral clothes and clothed me with gladness.
So,
My heart will sing praise to you and not be silent.
God,
My God,
I will give thanks to you forever.
Psalm 31 for the Chief Musician A Prayer Song by David In you,
God,
I take refuge.
Let me never be disappointed.
Deliver me in your righteousness.
Bend down to hear me.
Deliver me quickly.
Be my strong rock,
A house of defense to save me.
For you are my rock and my fortress.
Therefore,
For your name's sake,
Lead me and guide me.
Rescue me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me.
For you are my stronghold.
Into your hand I commit my spirit.
You redeem me,
God of truth.
I hate those who have useless idols,
But I trust in God.
I will be glad and rejoice in your love and kindness.
For you have seen my suffering.
You have known my soul in difficulties.
You have not given me over into the hands of my enemy.
You have set my feet on a large place.
Have mercy on me,
God,
For I am in distress.
My eyes,
My soul,
And my body waste away with grief.
For my life is spent with sorrow,
My years with sighing.
My strength fails because of my sin.
My bones have wasted away.
Because of all my enemies,
I have become despicable to my neighbors,
A horror to my acquaintances.
Those who saw me on the street fled from me.
I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man.
I am like broken pottery.
For I have heard the slander of many,
Terror on every side.
While they conspire together against me,
They plot to take away my life.
But I trust in you,
God.
I said you are my God.
My times are in your hand.
Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and those who persecute me.
Make your face shine on your servant.
Save me in your love and kindness.
Let me not be disappointed,
God,
For I have called on you.
Let the wicked be disappointed.
Let them be silent in the grave.
Let their lying lips,
Which rudely speak against the righteous with pride and contempt,
Be mute.
Oh,
How great is your goodness that you have stored up for those who respect you,
Which you have worked for those who take refuge in you before the people.
In the shelter of your presence,
You will hide them from the plotting of man.
You will keep them secretly in a home,
Away from accusing tongues.
Praise be to God,
For He has shown me His marvelous love and kindness in a strong city.
As for me,
I said too quickly,
I am cut off before your eyes.
Nevertheless,
You heard my petitions when I cried to you.
Oh,
Love God,
All you His saints.
God preserves the faithful and fully repays those who behave arrogantly.
Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who hope in God.
In you,
God,
I take refuge.
Let me never be disappointed.
Deliver me in your righteousness.
Psalm 32 by David,
A contemplative psalm.
I said,
I will confess my sin to God and you forgave the crime of my sin.
For this reason,
Let everyone who is godly pray to you in a time when you may be found.
Surely when the great waters overflow,
They will not reach to Him.
You are my hiding place.
You will preserve me from trouble.
You will surround me with songs of deliverance.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way in which you will go.
I will advise you with my eye on you.
Don't be like the horse or like the mule which have no understanding,
Who are controlled by bit and bridle,
Or else they will not come near to you.
Many sorrows come to the wicked,
But love and kindness will surround the person who trusts in God.
Be glad in God and rejoice,
You righteous.
Shout for joy,
All you who are upright in heart.
Psalm 33.
Rejoice in God,
You righteous.
Praise His fitting for the upright.
Give thanks to God with the harp.
Sing praises to Him with the instruments of ten strings.
Sing to Him a new song.
Play skillfully with a shout of joy.
For God's Word is right.
All His work is done in faithfulness.
He loves righteousness and justice.
The earth is full of the love and kindness of God.
By God's Word,
The heavens were made,
All the stars by the breath of His mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap.
He lays up the deeps and storehouses.
Let all the earth fear,
Respect God.
Let everyone stand in awe of Him.
For He spoke and it was done.
He commanded and it stood firm.
God brings the wisdom of the nations to nothing.
He makes the thoughts of the people to be ineffective.
The wisdom of God stands firm forever.
The thoughts of His heart to all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is God.
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.
God looks from heaven.
He sees all the people.
From the heavens,
He looks out on all the people of the earth.
He who forms all of their hearts.
And He considers all of their works.
There is no king saved by his large army.
A mighty man is not delivered by his great strength.
A horse is a weak hope for safety.
It cannot save anyone by its great power.
See,
God's eye is on those who fear,
Respect Him.
On those who hope in His love and kindness to deliver their soul from death.
To keep them alive in famine.
Our soul has waited for God.
He is our help and our shield.
Our heart rejoices in Him because we have trusted in His holy name.
Let your love and kindness be on us,
God,
Since we have hoped in you.
Psalm 34,
By David,
When he pretended to be insane before Abimelech,
Who drove him away,
And he departed.
Their faces will never be covered with shame.
This poor man cried,
And God heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
God's angel,
Surround those who respect Him and delivers them.
Oh,
Taste and see that God is good.
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.
Oh,
Fear God,
You His saints,
For there is no lack with those who fear Him.
The young lions lack and suffer hunger.
But those who seek God will not lack any good thing.
Come,
You children,
Listen to me.
I will teach you the fear of God.
Who is someone who wants a long and prosperous life?
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.
Stay far from evil and do good.
Seek peace and pursue it.
God's eyes are on the righteous.
His ears listen to their cry.
God's face is against those who do evil to cut off their memory from the earth.
The righteous cry and God hears,
And He delivers them out of all their troubles.
God is near to those who have a broken heart and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
Many are the difficulties of the righteous,
But God delivers Him out of them all.
He protects all of His bones.
Not one of them is broken.
Evil will kill the wicked.
Those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
God redeems the soul of His servants.
None of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
Psalm 35 by David God,
Oppose those who oppose Me.
Fight against those who fight against Me.
Take hold of shield and armor and stand up for My help.
Wave this spear and block those who pursue Me.
Tell My soul,
I am your salvation.
Let those who seek after Me be disappointed and brought to dishonor.
Let those who plot My ruin retreat and be confused.
Let them be blown away like chaff in the wind,
God's angel driving them away.
Let their way be dark and slippery,
God's angel pursuing them.
For without reason they have hidden their net in a pit for Me.
Without cause they have dug a pit for Me.
Let destruction catch them unaware.
Let the net they have hidden catch themselves.
Let them fall into that destruction.
My soul will be joyful in God.
It will rejoice in His salvation.
All My bones will say,
God,
Who is like You?
Who delivers the poor from those who are too strong for Him?
Yes,
The poor and the needy from the one who robs Him.
Unrighteous witnesses rise up.
They ask Me about things that I don't know about.
They pay back My good with evil and it grieves My soul.
But as for Me,
When they were sick,
I put on My mourning clothes.
I distressed Myself with fasting.
When My prayers returned without answer,
I acted as if they had been My friend or My brother.
I bowed down mourning like one who mourns his mother.
But in My troubles,
They rejoiced and gathered together.
The attackers gathered together against Me and I didn't know it.
They tore at Me and didn't stop.
Like the wicked mockers at a feast,
They snarled their teeth at Me.
Lord,
How long will You put up with this?
Rescue Me from their destruction.
My precious life from these lions.
I will give You thanks in front of a great crowd.
I will praise You among all the people.
Don't let My enemies rejoice over Me.
Or let those who hate Me without reason wink their eyes.
For they don't seek peace.
But they plot deceitful words against those who are at peace in the land.
Yes,
They open their mouth wide against Me.
They said,
Aha!
Aha!
Our eyes have seen it.
You have seen it,
God.
Don't keep silent.
Lord,
Don't be far from Me.
Wake up.
Rise up to defend Me,
My God.
My Lord,
Fight for Me.
Vindicate Me,
God.
My God,
According to Your righteousness,
Don't let them gloat over Me.
Don't let them say in their heart,
Aha!
That's the way we want it.
Don't let them say we have overtaken Him.
Let those who rejoice at My tragedy be disappointed and confused.
Let those who gloat over Me be covered with shame and dishonor.
Let those who favor My righteous cause shout for joy and be glad.
Yes,
Let them continually say,
May God who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servants be glorified.
My tongue will speak of Your righteousness and about Your praise all day long.
Psalm 36 For the Chief Musician By David,
The servant of God A revelation is within my heart about the disobedience of the wicked.
There is no fear of God before His eyes.
For they flatter themselves in their own eyes.
Too much to detect and hate is sin.
The words of their mouth are filled with sin and lies.
They have stopped being wise and doing good.
They plot sin as they lay on their beds.
They set themselves on a wicked path.
They don't hate evil.
Your love and kindness,
God,
Is in the heavens.
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the great mountains.
Your judgments are like the depths of the ocean.
God,
You preserve man and animal.
How precious is Your love and kindness,
God!
People take refuge under the shadow of Your wings.
They will be abundantly satisfied with the abundance of Your house.
You will make them drink in the river of Your pleasures.
For with You is the spring of life.
In Your light,
We will see light.
O,
Continue Your love and kindness to those who know You,
Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Don't let the foot of pride come against me.
Don't let the hand of the wicked drive me away.
The sinful have fallen.
They are thrown down and will not be able to rise.
Psalm 37 by David Don't be worried about those who are evil or envy those who sin.
For they will soon be cut down like grass and wither away like a green plant.
Trust in God and do good.
Live in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Also,
Delight yourself in God.
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to God.
Trust in Him and He will do this.
He will make your righteousness shine like a light and your justice like the sun at noon.
Rest in God and wait patiently for Him.
Don't worry about those who prosper in their evil,
Those who plot wickedness.
Don't be angry and abandon rage.
Don't fret.
It only leads to sin.
For sinners will be cut off.
But those who wait for God will inherit the land.
For after a little while,
The wicked will be no more.
Yes,
Though you look for them,
They will be gone.
But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The wicked plots against the just and snarls their teeth at them.
The Lord will laugh at them,
For He sees that theirs is coming.
The wicked have drawn out the sword and have prepared their bow to throw down the poor in need to kill those who are upright on the path.
Their sword will enter into their own heart.
Their bows will be broken.
Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of the wicked.
For the arms of the wicked will be broken.
But God upholds the righteous.
God knows the days of the blameless.
Their inheritance will be forever.
They will not be disappointed in the time of evil.
In the days of famine,
They will be satisfied.
But the wicked will perish.
The enemies of God will be like the beauty of the fields.
They will vanish,
Disappearing like smoke.
The wicked borrow and don't pay back.
But the righteous give generously.
They are blessed by God and will inherit the land.
Those who are cursed by God will be cut off.
A man's steps are made firm by God.
He delights in his path.
Though he stumbles,
He will not fall,
For God holds him up with His hand.
I have been young and now I am old.
But I have never seen the righteous abandon or his children begging for bread.
All day long,
He deals graciously and lends.
His children are blessed.
Depart from evil and do good.
Live securely forever.
For God loves justice and doesn't abandon His saints.
They are preserved forever.
But the children of the wicked will be cut off.
The righteous will inherit the land and live in it forever.
The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom.
His tongue speaks justice.
The law of God is in his heart.
None of his steps will slide.
The wicked watch the righteous and look to kill him.
God will not leave him in their evil hands or condemn him when he is judged.
Wait for God and keep his way and he will exalt you to inherit the land.
When the wicked are cut off,
You will see it.
I have seen the wicked in great power,
Spreading themselves like a green tree in its native soil.
But they passed away and were no more.
Yes,
I looked,
But they could not be found.
Make note of the blameless man and see the upright,
For there is a future for the man of peace.
As for sinners,
They will all be destroyed.
The future of the wicked will be cut off.
But the salvation of the righteous is from God.
He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
God helps them and rescues them.
He rescues them from the wicked and saves them because they have taken refuge in him.
Psalm 38,
A prayer song by David for a memorial.
God,
Don't reprimand me in your anger or punish me in your great irritation.
For your arrows have pierced me.
Your hand presses hard on me.
My flesh wastes away because of your anger.
And there is no health in my bones because of my sin.
For my sins have gone over my head.
Like a great burden,
They are too heavy for me.
My wounds are disgusting and infected because of my foolishness.
I am in pain and doubled over.
I go mourning all day long.
For my waist is filled with burning.
There is no health in my body.
I am faint and severely bruised.
I have groaned because of the anguish of my heart.
Lord,
All my desire is before you.
My groaning is not hidden from you.
My heart throbs.
My strength fails me.
As for the light of my eyes,
It has also left me.
My family and my friends stand off because of my plague.
My neighbors stand far off.
Those who seek after my life lay traps.
Those who seek to hurt me speak evil things and plan their deceit all day long.
But I,
Like a deaf man,
Don't hear.
I am like a mute man who doesn't open his mouth.
Yes,
I am like a man who doesn't hear and whose mouth are no rebuttals.
For I hope in you,
God.
You will answer,
Lord my God.
For I said don't let them gloat over me or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips.
For I am ready to fall.
My pain is continually before me.
For I will declare my wrongdoings.
I will be sorry for my sin.
But my enemies are forceful and many.
Those who hate me without reason are numerous.
They who pay back evil for good are my enemies because I follow what is good.
Don't forsake me,
God.
My God,
Don't be far from me.
Hurry to help me,
Lord,
My salvation.
Psalm 39 for the Chief Musician Jedithon A Prayer Song by David I said I will watch my ways so that I don't sin with my tongue.
I will keep my mouth with a bridle while wickedness is in front of me.
I was mute with silence.
I held my peace even from saying good.
My sorrow was stirred up.
My heart was hot within me.
While I thought about it,
The fire burned.
I spoke with my tongue.
God,
Show me my end.
What good is the length of my life?
Let me know how frail I am.
You have made my days short.
My lifetime is like nothing before you.
Surely every man lives for but a breath.
Surely every man walks like a shadow.
Surely they busy themselves in vain.
He stores up and doesn't know who will receive it.
Now,
Lord,
What do I wait for?
My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my sins.
Don't let the foolish criticize me.
I was mute.
I did not open my mouth because you did it.
Remove your curse from me.
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
When you rebuke and correct man for sin,
You consume his wealth like a moth.
Surely every man is but a breath.
Hear my prayer,
God,
And listen to my cry.
Don't be silent at my tears.
For I am a stranger with you,
A foreigner,
Like all my fathers were.
Oh,
Spare me that I may recover strength before I go away and exist no more.
Psalm 40 for the Chief Musician.
A prayer song by David.
I waited patiently for God.
He turned to me and heard my cry.
He brought me out of a horrible pit,
Out of the sticky clay.
He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He has put a new song in my mouth and even praise to our God.
Many will see it and fear and will trust in God.
Blessed is the man who makes God his trust and doesn't respect the arrogant.
Those who lie.
Many,
My God,
Are the wonderful things that you have done and your thoughts which are toward us.
They can't be declared back to you.
If I would try to declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be counted.
Sacrifice an offering you didn't desire.
You have opened my ears.
You have not required burnt offerings and sin offerings.
Then I said,
I have come.
It is written about me in the book in the scroll.
I delight to do your will,
My God.
Yes,
Your law is in my heart.
I have proclaimed good news of your righteousness to great crowds.
I will not seal my lips,
God.
You know,
I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart.
I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation.
I have not concealed your love and kindness and your truth from the people.
Don't withhold your tender mercies from me,
God.
Let your love and kindness and your truth continually preserve me.
For innumerable evils have surrounded me.
My sins have overtaken me so that I'm not able to look up.
They are more than the hairs of my head.
My heart has failed me.
Be pleased,
God,
To deliver me.
Hurry to help me,
God.
Let those who seek to destroy me be disappointed and confused.
Let those who delight in my suffering retreat and brought to dishonor.
Let those who laugh at me be deserted because of their shame.
Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.
Let those who love your salvation continually say,
Let God be exalted.
But I am poor and needy.
May the Lord think about me.
You are my help and my deliverer.
Don't delay,
My God.
Psalm 41 for the Chief Musician A Prayer Song by David Blessed is he who considers the poor.
God will deliver him in the day of evil.
God will preserve him and keep him alive.
He will be blessed on the earth and he will not hand him over to the will of his enemies.
God will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness.
I said,
God,
Have mercy on me.
Heal me,
For I have sinned against you.
My enemies speak evil against me,
Saying,
When will he die and his name perish?
If he comes to see me,
He speaks lies.
His heart is sinful.
When he leaves,
He tells lies.
All who hate me whisper together against me.
They imagine the worst for me.
An evil disease,
They say,
Has come on him.
Now he is down.
He will rise up no more.
Yes,
My own close friend,
In whom I trusted,
Who ate bread with me,
Has turned against me.
But you,
God,
Have mercy on me and raise me up,
So that I may repay him.
By this I know that you delight in me,
Because my enemy doesn't triumph over me.
As for me,
You uphold me because of my integrity and set me in your presence forever.
Blessed be your name,
God,
The God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.
My soul thirsts for God,
For the living God.
When can I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food,
Day and night,
While they continually ask me,
Where is your God?
These things I remember and pour out my soul.
How I used to go with the crowd and led them to God's house,
With shouts of joy and praise.
A large crowd keeping a holy day.
Why are you in despair,
My soul?
Why are you disturbed within me?
Hope in God,
For I will still praise him for the saving help of his presence.
My God,
I am in despair.
So,
I remember you from the land of the Jordan,
The heights of Hermon,
From the hill of Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of your waterfalls.
All your waves and your billows have swept over me.
God will command his love and kindness in the daytime.
In the night,
His song will be with me,
A prayer to the God of my life.
I will ask God,
My rock,
Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
As with the sword in my bones,
My enemies accuse me,
While they continually ask me,
Where is your God?
Why are you in despair,
My soul?
Why are you disturbed?
Hope in God,
For I will still praise him,
My saving help and my God.
Psalm 43.
Vindicate me,
God,
And plead my case against an ungodly nation.
Oh,
Deliver me from deceitful and wicked men,
For you are the God of my strength.
Why have you rejected me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of my enemy?
Oh,
Send out your light and your truth.
Let them lead me.
Let them bring me to your holy hill,
To your tents.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
To God,
My exceeding joy.
I will praise you on the harp,
My God.
Why are you in despair,
My soul?
Why are you disturbed?
Hope in God,
For I will still praise him,
My savior,
My helper,
And my God.
Psalm 44.
For the Chief Musician.
By the Sons of Korah.
A Contemplative Psalm.
We have heard with our ears,
God.
Our fathers have told us the things you did in their days,
In the days of old.
You drove out nations with your hand,
But you planted them.
You afflicted the people and spread them abroad.
For they didn't get the land by their own sword,
And their own arms saved them.
But your right hand,
Your arm,
And the light of your face did,
Because you were favorable to them.
God,
You are my king.
Command victories for Jacob.
Through you,
We will push down our enemies.
Through your name,
We will beat down those who rise up against us.
For I will not trust in my bow,
And my sword will not save me.
But you have saved us from our enemies,
And have shamed those who hate us.
In God,
We have made our boast all day long.
We give thanks to your name forever.
But now,
You have rejected us,
And brought us to shame,
And don't go out with our armies.
You make us turn back from the enemy.
Those who hate us take plunder for themselves.
You have made us like sheep for food,
And have scattered us among the nations.
You sell your people for nothing,
And have gained nothing from their sale.
You make us a disgrace to our neighbors,
A joke,
And ridiculed by those who are around us.
You make us a byword among the nations.
The people shake their heads in disgust.
All day long,
My disgrace is before me,
And shame covers my face,
At the taunt of my enemy who discredits and verbally abuses me.
All this has come on us,
Yet we haven't forgotten you.
We haven't turned our back on your promises.
Our heart has not changed.
Our steps haven't strayed from your path.
Though you have crushed us in the den of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death.
If we have forgotten the name of our God,
Or spread out our hands to a strange God,
Wouldn't God search this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
Yes,
For your sake,
We are killed all day long.
We are regarded as sheep for the slaughter.
Wake up!
Why do you sleep,
Lord?
Arise!
Don't reject us forever.
Why do you hide your face and forget our affliction and our oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust.
Our body clings to the earth.
Rise up to help us.
Redeem us for your love and kindness' sake.
Psalm 45 for the Chief Musician Set to The Lilies,
A Contemplation by the Sons of Korah A Wedding Song My heart overflows with a noble theme.
I recite my verses for the King.
My tongue is like the pen of a skillful writer.
You are the most excellent of the people.
Grace has anointed your lips.
Therefore,
God has blessed you forever.
Strap your sword on your thigh,
Mighty one,
Your splendor and your majesty.
In your majesty,
Ride on victorious on behalf of truth,
Humility,
And righteousness.
Let your right hand display awesome deeds.
Your arrows are sharp.
The nations fall under you,
With arrows in the hearts of the king's enemies.
Your throne,
God,
Is forever and ever.
A scepter of justice is the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.
Therefore,
God,
Your God,
Has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your peers.
All your clothes smell like myrrh,
Aloes,
And cassia.
Out of ivory palaces,
Stringed instruments have made you glad.
King's daughters are among your honorable women.
At your right hand,
The queen stands in gold of ophir.
Listen,
Daughter.
Consider and pay attention.
Forget your own people and also your father's house,
So the king will desire your beauty.
Honor him,
For he is your lord.
The daughter of Tyre comes with a gift.
The rich among the people plead for your favor.
The princess is all-glorious.
Her clothing is interwoven with gold.
She will be led to the king in an embroidered gown.
The virgins,
Her companions who follow her,
Will be brought to you.
With gladness and rejoicing,
They will be led.
They will enter into the king's palace.
Your sons will take the place of your fathers.
You will make them princes in all the earth.
I will make your name to be remembered in all generations.
Therefore,
The people will give you thanks forever and ever.
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore,
We won't be afraid,
Though the earth shakes,
Though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas,
Though its waters roar and are troubled,
Though the mountains tremble with their swelling.
There is a river,
The streams of which make the city of God glad,
The holy place of the tents of the Most High.
God is within her.
She will not be moved.
God will help her at dawn.
The nations raged.
The kingdoms were shaken.
He lifted his voice and the earth melted.
God of the armies is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge.
Come,
See God's works,
What devastation he has made in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear.
He burns the chariots in the fire.
Be still and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations.
I will be exalted in the earth.
God of the armies is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge.
Psalm 47 for the Chief Musician,
A psalm by the Sons of Korah.
Sing praises.
Sing praises to our King.
Sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth.
Sing praises with understanding.
God reigns over the nations.
God sits on the holy throne.
The princes of the people are gathered.
The people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God.
He is greatly exalted.
Psalm 48,
A psalm by the Sons of Korah.
Great is God,
And greatly to be praised.
In the city of our God,
In His holy mountain.
Beautiful in height,
The joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion.
On the north sides,
The city of the great King.
God has shown Himself in her strongholds as a refuge.
For,
See,
The kings gathered together.
They passed by together.
They sought,
Then they were amazed.
They were dismayed.
They hurried away.
Trembling took hold of them there.
Pain as of a woman in agony.
With the east wind,
You break up the ships of Tarshish.
As we have heard,
So we have seen.
In the city of God of the armies,
In the city of our God.
God will establish it forever.
We have thought about your love and kindness,
God,
In the middle of your temple.
As in your name,
God,
So is your praise to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is full of righteousness.
Let Mount Zion be glad.
Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your wisdom.
Walk about Zion,
And go around her.
Count all its towers.
Notice her fortifications.
Consider her palaces so that you may tell it to the next generation.
For this God is our God forever and ever.
He will be our guide even to death.
Psalm 49 For the Chief Musician A Psalm by the Sons of Korah Hear this,
All you people.
Listen,
All you people of the world,
Both low and high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth will speak words of wisdom.
My heart will utter understanding.
I will incline my ear to a proverb.
I will solve my riddle on the harp.
Why should I fear in the days of evil when sin at my feet surrounds me?
Those who trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches?
None of them can by any means save his brother or give God a ransom for him.
For the redemption of their life is costly.
No payment is ever enough that he should live on forever,
That he should not see death.
For he sees that wise men die,
Likewise the fool and the senseless perish and leave their wealth to others.
Their thought is that their houses will endure forever and their homes live on for all generations.
They name their lands after themselves.
But man,
Despite his riches,
Doesn't endure.
He is like the animals that perish.
This is the destiny of those who are foolish and of those who approve their sayings.
They are appointed as a flock for the grave.
Death will be their shepherd.
The upright will have dominion over them in the morning.
Their beauty will decay in the grave,
Far from their mansion.
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
For he will receive me.
Don't be afraid when a man is made rich,
When the glory of his house is increased.
For when he dies,
He will take nothing with him.
His glory won't follow after him.
Though while he lived he was blessed.
Men praise you when you do well for yourself.
But he will go like the generation of his fathers.
They will never see the light.
A man who has riches without understanding is like the animals that perish.
Psalm 50,
A psalm of Asaph Hear my people,
And I will speak.
Israel,
I will testify against you.
I am God your God.
I don't reprimand you for your sacrifices.
Your burnt offerings are continually before me.
I have no need for a bull from your stall or male goats from your pens.
For every animal of the forest is mine,
And the livestock on a thousand hills.
I know all of the birds of the mountains.
The wild animals of the field are mine.
If I were hungry,
I would not tell you.
For the world is mine,
And all that is in it.
Will I eat the meat of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving.
Pay your vows to the Most High.
Call on me in the day of trouble.
I will deliver you,
And you will honor me.
But to the wicked,
God says,
What right do you have to declare my laws,
As if you had taken my promises on your lips,
Since you hate instruction and throw my words behind you?
When you saw a thief,
You agreed with him and have participated with adulterers.
You give your mouth to evil.
Your tongue crafts lies.
You sit and speak against your brother.
You slander your own mother's son.
You have done these things,
And I kept silent.
You thought that I was just like you.
I will rebuke you and accuse you in front of your eyes.
Now consider this,
You who forget God,
Or I will tear you into pieces and there will be no one to save you.
Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me and prepares the way so that I will show God's salvation to him.
Psalm 51 for the Chief Musician A prayer song by David when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had slept with Bathsheba.
Have mercy on me,
God,
According to your love and kindness,
According to your vast tender mercies.
Blot out my sins.
Wash me thoroughly from my sin.
Cleanse me from my sin,
For I know my wrongdoings.
My sin is constantly before me.
Against you and you only I have sinned and done that which is evil in your sight.
So you may be proven right when you speak and justified when you judge.
I was born in sin.
My mother conceived me in sin.
You desire truth in the inward parts.
You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean.
Wash me and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness so that the bones you have broken may rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my sins.
Create in me a clean heart,
O God.
Renew a right spirit within me.
Don't throw me from your presence and take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation.
Uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach sinners your ways.
Sinners will be converted to you.
Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed,
God,
My salvation.
My tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
Lord,
Open my lips.
My mouth will declare your praise.
For you don't delight in sacrifice or else I would give it.
You have no pleasure in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.
O God,
You will not despise a broken and repentant heart.
Do well in your good pleasure to Zion.
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
In burnt offerings and in whole burnt offerings.
Then they will offer bulls on your altar.
Psalm 52 For the Chief Musician A Contemplation by David When Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul,
David has come to Ahimelech's house.
Why do you boast harm,
Mighty man?
God's love and kindness endures continually.
Your tongue plots destruction like a sharp razor working deceitfully.
You love evil more than good,
Lying rather than speaking the truth.
You love all devouring words,
You deceitful tongue.
God will likewise destroy you forever.
He will take you up and pluck you out of your tent and root you out of the land of the living.
The righteous will also see it in fear and laugh at him,
Saying,
Look this man who didn't make God his strength but trusted in his great riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
But as for me,
I am like a green olive tree in God's house.
I trust in God's love and kindness forever and ever.
I will give you thanks forever because you have done it.
I will hope in your name for it is good in the presence of your saints.
Psalm 53 For the Chief Musician To the tune of Mahalaloth,
A contemplation by David.
The fool has said in his heart,
There is no God.
They are corrupt and have done detestable sin.
There is no one who does good.
God looks down from heaven on the children of men to see if there are any who understood,
Who seek after God.
Every one of them has gone back.
They have become filthy together.
There is no one who does good.
No,
Not one.
Have the sinful,
No knowledge.
Those who eat up my people as they eat bread and don't call on God.
There they were in great fear,
Where no fear was,
For God has scattered the bones of him who surrounds against you.
You have put them to shame because God has rejected them.
Oh,
That the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion.
When God brings back his people from captivity,
Then Jacob will rejoice and Israel will be glad.
Psalm 54 For the Chief Musician On Stringed Instruments A Contemplation by David When the Ziphites came and said to Saul,
Isn't David hiding himself among us?
Save me,
God,
By your name.
Vindicate me in your might.
Hear my prayer,
God.
Listen to the words of my mouth.
For strangers have risen up against me.
Violent men have sought after my soul.
They haven't set God before them.
Behold,
God is my helper.
The Lord is the one who sustains me.
He will repay the evil to my enemies.
Destroy them in your truth.
With a freewill offering,
I will sacrifice to you.
I will give thanks to your name,
God,
For it is good.
For he has delivered me out of all my trouble.
My eye has seen triumph over my enemies.
Psalm 55 For the Chief Musician On Stringed Instruments A Contemplation by David Listen to my prayer,
God.
Don't hide yourself from my prayer.
Be with me and answer me.
I am restless in my complaint and moan because of the voice of my enemy,
Because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they bring suffering on me.
In anger they hold a grudge against me.
My heart is in agony.
The terrors of death have fallen on me.
Fearfulness and trembling have come on me.
Horror has overwhelmed me.
I said,
Oh,
That I had wings like a dove.
Then I would fly away and be at rest.
Then I would wander far off.
I would live in the wilderness.
I would hurry to his shelter from the stormy wind and storm.
Confuse them,
Lord,
And confound their language.
For I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they prowl around on its walls.
Hatred and abuse are also within her.
Destructive forces are within her.
Threats and lies don't depart from her streets.
For it was not my enemy who insulted me.
Then I could have endured it.
Neither was it he who hated me,
Who raised himself up against me.
Then I would have hidden myself from him.
But it was you,
A man like me,
My companion and my close friend.
We took sweet fellowship together.
We walked in God's house with others.
Let death come suddenly on them.
Let them go down alive into the grave.
For wickedness is among them in their dwelling.
As for me,
I will call on God.
God will save me.
Evening,
Morning,
And at noon,
I will cry out in distress.
He will hear my voice.
He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me.
Although there are many who oppose me,
God,
Who is enthroned forever,
Will hear and answer them.
They never change and don't fear God.
This man raises his hands against his friends.
He has violated his covenant.
His mouth was smooth as butter,
But his heart was war.
His words were softer than oil,
Yet they were drawn swords.
Cast your burden on God,
And He will sustain you.
He will never allow the righteous to be moved.
But you,
God,
Will bring them down into the pit of destruction.
Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days,
But I will trust in you.
Psalm 56 What can people do to me?
All day long,
They twist my words.
All their thoughts are against me for evil.
They conspire and lurk,
Watching my steps.
They are eager to take my life.
Will they escape my sin and anger?
Cast down the people,
God.
You keep count of my misery.
You put my tears in your container.
Aren't they in your book?
Then my enemies will turn back in the day that I call.
I know this,
That God is for me.
And God,
I will praise His word.
And God,
I will praise His word.
I have put my trust in God.
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
Your vows are on me,
God.
I will give thank offerings to you.
For you have delivered my soul from death and prevented my feet from falling,
That I may walk before God in the light of the living.
Psalm 57 For the Chief Musician To the tune of Do Not Destroy,
A poem by David,
When he fled from Saul in the cave.
Be merciful to me,
God.
Be merciful to me.
For my soul takes refuge in you.
Yes,
In the shadow of your wings,
I will take shelter until disaster is passed.
I cry out to God Most High,
To God who accomplishes my requests for me.
He will answer from heaven and save me.
He punishes the one who is pursuing me.
God will send out His love and kindness and His truth.
My soul is among lions.
I lie among those who are set on fire.
The people whose teeth are spears and arrows and their tongue a sharp sword.
Be exalted,
God,
Above the heavens.
Let your glory be above all the earth.
They have prepared a net for my steps.
My soul is bowed down.
They dig a pit in front of me.
They fall into the middle of it themselves.
My heart is unwavering,
God.
My heart is committed.
Yes,
I will sing.
Yes,
I will sing praises.
Wake up,
My glory.
Wake up,
Stringed instrument and harp.
I will wake up the dawn.
I will give thanks to you,
Lord,
Among the people.
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your great love and kindness reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies.
Be exalted,
God,
Above the heavens.
Let your glory be over all the earth.
Psalm 58 For the chief musician to the tune of Do Not Destroy A poem by David Do you indeed speak righteousness,
Silent ones?
Do you people judge blamelessly?
No,
In your heart you plot injustice.
You plan out the violence for your hands around the earth.
The wicked go off course from birth.
They are wayward as soon as they are born,
Speaking lies.
Their poison is like the poison of a snake,
Like a deaf cobra that plugs its ears,
Which doesn't listen to the voice of charmers,
No matter how skillful the charmer may be.
Break their teeth,
God,
In their mouth.
Break out the great teeth of the young lions,
God.
Let them vanish like water that flows away.
When they draw the bow,
Let their arrows be made dull.
Let them be like a snail which melts and passes away,
Like the stillborn child who has not seen the sun.
Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns,
He will sweep away the green and the burning alike.
The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance.
He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,
So that men will say,
Most certainly there is a reward for the righteous.
Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth.
Psalm 59 For the chief musician to the tune of Do Not Destroy A poem by David When Saul pursued And they watched his house to kill him Deliver me from my enemies,
My God Set me on high from those who rise up against me Deliver me from sinners Save me from the bloodthirsty men They lie in wait for me The mighty gather together against me Not for my disobedience or for my sin,
God I have done no wrong Yet they are ready to attack me Rise up,
Look,
And help me You,
God of armies,
God of Israel Rouse yourself to punish the nations Show no mercy to the wicked traitors They return in evening,
Howling like dogs And prowl around the city They spew with their mouth Swords in their lips They say,
For who hears this?
But you,
God,
Laugh at them You scoff at all the nations Oh,
My strength,
I watch for you For God is my high tower My God will go before me with his love and kindness God will let me look at my enemies in triumph Don't kill them,
Or my people may forget Scatter them by your power And bring them down,
Lord,
Our shield For the sin of their mouth And the words of their lips Let them be caught in their pride For the curses and lies which they utter Consume them in wrath Consume them and they will be no more Let them know that God rules in Jacob To the ends of the earth At the evening,
Let them return Let them howl like a dog And go around the city They will wander up and down for food And wait all night if they aren't satisfied But I will sing of your strength Yes,
I will sing aloud of your love and kindness in the morning For you have been my high tower A refuge in the day of my distress To you,
My strength,
I will sing praises For God is my high tower The God of my mercy Psalm 60 for the Chief Musician To the tune of The Lily of the Covenant A teaching poem by David When he fought with Aram Naharim And with Aram Zobah And Joab returned And killed 12,
000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt God,
You have rejected us You have broken us down You've been angry Restore us again You have made the land tremble You have torn it Mend its fractures for it quakes You have shown your people hard things You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger You have given a banner to those who fear you That it may be displayed because of the truth So that your beloved may be delivered Save with your right hand and answer us God has spoken from his sanctuary I will triumph I will divide Shechem And measure out the Valley of Sukkoth Gilead is mine And Manasseh is mine Ephraim also is the defense of my head Judah is my scepter Moab is my washbasin I will throw my sandal on Edom I shout in triumph over Philistia Who will bring me into the strong city?
Who has led me to Edom?
Haven't you,
God,
Rejected us?
You don't go out with our armies,
God Give us help against the enemy For the help of man is vain Through God we will act courageously For it is he who will tread down our enemies Psalm 61 For the chief musician For a stringed instrument By David Hear my cry,
God Listen to my prayer From the ends of the earth I call to you When my heart is overwhelmed Lead me to the rock that is higher than me For you have been a refuge for me A strong tower from the enemy I will live in your tent forever I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings For you,
God,
Have heard my vows You have given me the heritage of those who fear,
Respect your name You will prolong the king's life His years will be for generations He will be enthroned in God's presence forever Appoint your love and kindness and truth That they may preserve him So I will sing praise to your name forever That I may fulfill my vows daily Psalm 62 For the chief musician To jettison A prayer song by David My soul rests in God alone My salvation is from him He alone is my rock,
My salvation,
And my fortress I will never be greatly shaken How long will you assault a man?
Would all of you throw him down Like a leaning wall,
Like a tottering fence?
They fully intend to throw him down From his lofty place They delight in lies They bless with their mouth But they curse inwardly My soul,
Wait in silence for God alone For my expectation is from him He alone is my rock and my salvation,
My fortress I will not be shaken My salvation and my honor is with God The rock of my strength and my refuge is in God Trust in him at all times,
You people Pour out your heart to him God is a refuge for us Surely men of low standing are just a breath And men of high standing are a lie In the balances they will go up They are together lighter than a breath Don't trust in oppression Don't become vain in robbery If riches increase,
Don't set your heart on them God has spoken once,
Twice I have heard this That power belongs to God Also to you,
Lord,
Belongs love and kindness For you reward every man according to his work Psalm 63 A prayer song by David When he was in the desert of Judah God,
You are my God I will earnestly seek you My soul thirsts for you I long for you in a dry and weary land Where there is no water So I have seen you in the sanctuary Watching your power and your glory Because your love and kindness is better than life My lips will praise you So I will bless you while I live I will lift up my hands in your name My soul will be satisfied as with the richest food My mouth will praise you with joyful lips When I remember when I laid asleep And think about you in the middle of the night For you have been my help I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings My soul stays close to you Your right hand holds me up But those who seek my soul to destroy it Will go into the lower parts of the earth They will be given over to the power of the sword They will be food for jackals But the king will rejoice in God Everyone who swears by him will praise him For the mouth of those who speak lies will be silenced Psalm 64 for the chief musician A prayer song by David Hear my voice,
God,
My complaint Preserve my life from my fear of the enemy Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked From the noisy crowd of those doing evil Who sharpen their tongue like a sword And aim their arrows,
Deadly words To shoot innocent men from ambushes They shoot at him suddenly and fearlessly They encourage themselves in evil plans They talk about Layne's snare secretly They say who will see them They plied evil saying,
We have made a perfect plan Surely man's mind and heart are cunning But God will shoot at them They will be suddenly struck down with an arrow Their own tongues will ruin them All who see them will shake their heads All mankind will be afraid They will declare the work of God And will wisely ponder what he has done The righteous will be glad in God And will take refuge in him All the upright in heart will praise him Psalm 65 for the Chief Musician A prayer song by David Praise waits for you,
God,
In Zion Vows will be performed to you You who hear prayer,
All men will come to you Sins overwhelmed me But you compensated for our wrongdoings Blessed is the one whom you choose And cause to come near That he may live in your courts We will be filled with the goodness of your house Your holy temple By awesome deeds of righteousness You answer us,
God of our salvation You who are the hope of all the ends of the earth Of those who are far away on the sea By your power you form the mountains Having armed yourself with strength You still the roaring of the seas The roaring of their waters And the turmoil of the nations They also who live in faraway places Are afraid at your wonders You call the morning's dawn And the evening with songs of joy You visit the earth and water it You greatly enrich it The river of God is full of water You provide them grain For so you have ordained it You drench its furrows You level its ridges You soften it with showers You bless it with a crop You crown the year with your bounty Your carts overflow with abundance The wilderness grasslands overflow The hills are clothed with gladness The pastures are covered with flocks The valleys are also clothed with grain They shout for joy They also sing Psalm 66 for the chief musician A song Make a joyful shout to God All the earth Sing to the glory of his name Offer glory and praise Tell God how awesome are your deeds Through the greatness of your power Your enemies submit themselves to you All the earth will worship you And will sing to you They will sing to your name Come and see God's deeds Awesome work on behalf of the children of men He turned the sea into dry land They walk through the river on foot Therefore,
We rejoiced in him He rules by his power forever His eyes watch the nations Don't let the rebellious rise up against him Praise our God,
Everyone Make the sound of his praise heard He preserves our life among the living And doesn't allow our feet to be moved For you,
God,
Have tested us You have refined us like silver is refined You brought us into prison You laid a burden on our backs You allowed men to ride over our heads We went through fire and through water But you brought us to the place of abundance I will come into your temple with burnt offerings I will pay my vows to you Which my lips promised And I spoke when I was in distress I will offer you burnt offerings of fat animals With the offering of rams I will offer bulls with goats Come in here,
All you who fear God I will declare what he has done for me I cried to him with my mouth He was praised with my tongue If I cherished sin in my heart The Lord wouldn't have listened But most certainly,
God has listened He has heard the voice of my prayer Blessed be God who has not turned away my prayer Or his love and kindness from me Psalm 67,
For the chief musician With stringed instruments,
A song May God be merciful to us,
Bless us And cause his face to shine on us So that your way may be known on earth And your salvation among the nations Let the people praise you,
God Let all the people praise you Oh,
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy For you will judge the people with fairness And govern the nations on earth Let the people praise you,
God Let all the people praise you The earth has yielded its increase God,
Even our own God,
Will bless us God will bless us All the ends of the earth will fear him Psalm 68,
For the chief musician A prayer song by David Let God arise Let his enemies be scattered Let them who hate him also flee before him As smoke is driven away,
So drive them away As wax melts before the fire So let the wicked perish at the presence of God But let the righteous be glad Let them rejoice before God Yes,
Let them rejoice with gladness Sing to God Sing praises to his name Praise him who rides on the clouds His name Rejoice before him A father of the fatherless And defender of the widows Is God in his holy place God sets the lonely in families He brings out the prisoners with singing But the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land God,
When you went out before your people When you marched through the wilderness The earth trembled The sky also poured down rain At the presence of the God of Sinai At the presence of God,
The God of Israel You,
God,
Sent a plentiful rain You confirmed your inheritance when it was weary Your congregation lived in it You,
God,
Prepared your goodness for the poor The Lord announced the word The ones who proclaim it are a great company King of armies,
Flee,
They flee She who waits at home divides the plunder While you sleep among the campfires The wings of a dove covered with silver Her feathers with shining gold When the Almighty scattered kings in her It snowed on Zalmon The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains The mountains of Bashan are rugged Why do you look in envy,
You rugged mountains At the mountains where God chooses to reign?
Yes,
God will live there forever The chariots of God are tens of thousands And thousands of thousands The Lord is among them From Sinai into the sanctuary You have risen on high You have led away captives You have received gifts among people Yes,
Among the rebellious also That the Lord God would live there Blessed be the Lord who daily carries our burdens God who is our salvation God is to us a God of deliverance To God the Lord belongs escape from death But God will strike through the head of his enemies The hairy scalp of one like this Who still continues in his sin The Lord said I will bring you again from Bashan I will bring you again from the depths of the sea That you may crush them Dipping your foot in blood That the tongues of your dogs May have their fill from your enemies They have seen your mighty parades,
God Even the marches of my God,
My King,
Into the sanctuary The singers went before The minstrels followed after Among the ladies playing with tambourines Bless God in the congregations Even the Lord in the assembly of Israel There is little Benjamin,
Their ruler The princes of Judah,
Their counsel The princes of Zebulun And the princes of Naphtali Your God has commanded your strength Strengthen,
God,
That which you have done for us Because of your temple at Jerusalem Kings will bring presents to you Rebuke the wild animals of the stocks The great number of bulls With the calves of the people Being humbled,
May it bring bars of silver Scatter the nations that delight in war Princes will come out of Egypt Ethiopia will hurry to stretch out her hands to God Sing to God,
You kingdoms of the earth Sing praises to the Lord To him who rides on the heaven of heavens Which are of old He utters his voice,
A mighty voice Ascribe strength to God His excellency is over Israel His strength is in the skies You are awesome,
God,
In your sanctuaries The God of Israel gives strength and power to his people Praise be to God Psalm 69 for the chief musician To the tune of Lilies by David Save me,
God,
For the waters have come up to my neck I sink in deep sludge where there is no foothold I come into deep waters where the floods overtake me I am weary with crying,
My throat is dry My eyes fail,
Looking for my God Those who hate me for no reason are more than the hairs of my head Those who wrongly want me cut off,
My enemies,
Are mighty I have to repay what I didn't take God,
You know my foolishness My sins aren't hidden from you Don't let those who wait for you be shamed through me,
Lord God of armies Don't let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
God of Israel Because for your sake,
I have borne disgrace Shame has covered my face I have become a stranger to my brothers,
An alien to my mother's children For the zeal of your house consumes me The disgraces of those who disgraced you have fallen on me When I wept and I fasted,
That was to my disgrace When I made funeral clothes my clothing,
I became a joke to them Those who sit at the city gate talk about me I am the song of the drunkards But as for me,
My prayer is to you,
God,
In an acceptable time God,
In the abundance of your love and kindness,
Answer me in the truth of your salvation Deliver me out of the sludge and don't let me sink Let me be delivered from those who hate me and out of the deep waters Don't let the floodwaters overwhelm me or let the deep waters swallow me up Don't let the pit shut its mouth on me Answer me,
God,
For your love and kindness is good According to your vast tender mercies,
Turn to me Don't hide your face from your servant,
For I am in distress Answer me quickly,
Draw near to my soul and redeem it Ransom me because of my enemies You know my disgrace,
My shame and my dishonor My enemies are all before you Disgrace has broken my heart and I am full of heaviness I looked for someone to take pity,
But there was none As for comforters,
I found none They gave me poison for my food In my thirst,
They gave me vinegar to drink Let their table before them become a snare May it become a payback and a trap Let their eyes be darkened so that they can't see Let their backs be continually bent Pour out your anger on them Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them Let their homes be desolate Let no one live in their tents For they persecute the one that you have wounded They tell of the sorrow of those that you have hurt Charge them with crime upon crime Don't let them come into your righteousness Let them be blotted out of the book of life and not be written with the righteous But I am in pain and distress Let your salvation,
God,
Protect me I will praise the name of God with a song And I will magnify Him with thanksgiving It will please God better than an ox or a bull that has horns and hooves The humble have seen it and are glad You who seek after God,
Let your heart live For God hears the needy and doesn't despise His captive people Let heaven and earth praise Him The seas and everything that moves in them For God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah They will settle there and own it The children also of His servants will inherit it Those who love His name will live there Psalm 70,
For the chief musician By David,
A reminder Hurry,
God,
To deliver me Come quickly to help me,
God Let those who seek my life be disappointed and confused Let those who desire my ruin retreat in disgrace Let those who shamefully say,
Aha,
Be forced to retreat Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you Let those who love your salvation continually say,
Let God be exalted But I am poor and needy Come to me quickly,
God You are my help and my deliverer God,
Don't delay Psalm 71,
In you,
God,
I take refuge Never let me be disappointed Deliver me in your righteousness and rescue me Turn your ear to me and save me Be my rock of refuge,
Which I may always go to Give the command to save me For you are my rock and my fortress Rescue me,
My God,
From the hand of the wicked From the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man For you are my hope,
Lord God My confidence from my youth I have relied on you from birth You took me out of my mother's womb I will always praise you I am a miracle to many,
But you are my strong refuge My mouth will be filled with your praise With your honor all day long Don't reject me in my old age Don't forsake me when my strength fails For my enemies talk about me Those who watch for my soul conspire together saying,
God has forsaken him Pursue and take him,
For no one will rescue him God,
Don't be far from me My God,
Hurry to help me Let my accusers be disappointed and consumed Let those who want to harm me Be covered with disgrace and scorn But I will always hope And will add to all of your praise My mouth will tell about your righteousness And of your salvation all day Though I don't know its full measure I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord God I will tell of your righteousness,
Which is yours alone God,
You have taught me from my youth Until now I have declared your wondrous works Yes,
Even when I am old and gray-haired,
God,
Don't forsake me Until I have declared your strength to the next generation Your might to everyone who is to come God,
Your righteousness also reaches to the heavens You have done great things God,
Who is like you?
You,
Who have shown us many and bitter troubles You will let me live You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth Increase my honor and comfort me again I will praise you with the harp for your faithfulness,
My God I will sing praises to you with a stringed instrument,
Holy One of Israel My lips will shout for joy My soul,
Which you have redeemed,
Sings praises to you My tongue will also talk about your righteousness all day long For those who want to harm me are disappointed and confused Psalm 72 for Solomon God,
Give the king your justice,
Your righteousness to the royal son He will judge your people with righteousness and your poor with justice The mountains will bring prosperity to the people The hills bring the fruit of righteousness He will judge the poor of the people He will save the children of the needy And will break the oppressor in pieces They will fear,
Respect you while the sun endures And as long as the moon throughout all generations He will come down like rain on mowed grass As showers that water the earth In his days the righteous will flourish An abundance of peace until the moon is no more He will have dominion from sea to sea From the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth Those who live in the wilderness will bow down before him His enemies will lick the dust The kings of Tarshish and of the islands will bring tribute The kings of Sheba and Seba will offer gifts Yes,
All kings will fall down before him All nations will serve him For he will deliver the needy when he cries The poor who has no helper He will have pity on the poor and needy He will save the souls of the needy He will redeem their soul from oppression and violence Their blood will be precious in his sight They will live and to him will be given of the gold of Sheba Men will pray for him continually They will bless him all day long Abundance of grain will be throughout the land Its fruit sways like Lebanon Let it flourish,
Thriving like the grass of the field His name endures forever His name continues as long as the sun Men will be blessed by him All nations will call him blessed Praise be to God,
The God of Israel Who alone does marvelous works Blessed be his glorious name forever Let the whole earth be filled with his glory Amen and amen This ends the prayers by David,
The son of Jesse Psalm 73,
A psalm by Asaph Truly God is good to Israel,
To those who are pure in heart But as for me,
My feet were almost gone My steps had nearly slipped For I was envious of the arrogant When I saw the prosperity of the wicked For there are no struggles in their death But their strength is firm They are free from burdens of men They are not plagued like other men Therefore,
Pride is like a chain around their neck Violence covers them like a garment Their eyes bulge with fat Their mind passes the limits of conceit They will scoff and speak with hatred In arrogance,
They threaten to oppress They speak as if they rule the heavens Their tongue walks through the earth Therefore,
Their people return to them And they drink up waters of abundance They say,
How does God know?
Is there knowledge in the Most High?
These are the ways of the wicked They are always at ease They increase in riches Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain And washed my hands in innocence For all day long I have been plagued And punished every morning If I had said I will speak this I would have betrayed the generation of your children When I tried to understand this It was too painful for me Until I entered God's sanctuary And considered how their lives will end Truly you set them on a slippery place You throw them down to destruction How they will be suddenly destroyed They are completely swept away with tears As a dream when one wakes up So Lord,
When you awake You will despise their evil ambitions For my soul was grieved I was resentful in my heart I was so senseless and ignorant I was a brute beast before you Nevertheless,
I am continually with you You have held my right hand You will guide me with your counsel And afterward,
Receive me to glory Who do I have in heaven?
There is no one on earth whom I desire besides you My flesh and my heart fails But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever For those who are far off from you will perish You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you But it is good for me to come close to God I made the Lord God my refuge That I may tell all of your works God,
Why have you rejected us forever?
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
Remember your congregation which you purchased long ago Which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your inheritance Mount Zion in which you have lived Turn towards the eternal ruins All the evil that the enemy has done in the sanctuary Your enemies have roared in the middle of your assembly They have set up their standards as signs They have behaved like men wielding axes Cutting through a thicket of trees Now they break all its carved work down with hatchets and hammers They have burned your sanctuary to the ground They have profaned the home of your name They have said in their heart we will crush them completely They have burned up all the places in the land where God was worshipped We see no miraculous signs There is no longer any prophet Neither is there among us anyone who knows how long How long,
God,
Will the enemy disgrace?
Will the enemy blaspheme your name forever?
Why do you withhold your hand,
Your right hand?
Take it from your chest and consume them Yet God is my King of long ago Working salvation throughout the earth You divided the sea by your strength You broke the head of the sea monsters in the waters You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces You gave him as food to people and desert creatures You opened up spring and stream You dried up mighty rivers The day is yours The night is also yours You have prepared the light and the sun You have set all the boundaries of the earth You have made summer and winter Remember this,
That the enemy has mocked you,
God Foolish people have blasphemed your name Don't deliver the life of your dove to wild beasts Don't forget the life of your poor forever Honor your covenant For haunts of violence fill the dark places of the earth Don't let the oppressed return to shamed Let the poor and needy praise your name Arise,
God,
Plead your cause Remember how the foolish man mocks you all day Don't forget the voice of your enemies The uproar of those who rise up against you rises continually Psalm 75 For the chief musician To the tune of Do Not Destroy A psalm by Asaph A song We give thanks to you,
God We give thanks for your name is near Men tell about your wondrous works When I choose the appointed time,
I will judge perfectly The earth and all its people quake I firmly hold its pillars I said to the arrogant,
Don't boast I said to the wicked,
Don't lift up the horn Don't lift up your horn on high Don't speak with a stiff neck For neither from the east nor from the west Or from the south comes exaltation But God is the judge He puts down one and lifts up another For in God's hand,
There is a cup Full of foaming wine mixed with spices He pours it out Indeed,
The wicked of the earth drink And drink it to its very dregs But I will declare this forever I will sing praises to the God of Jacob I will cut off all the horns of the wicked But the horns of the righteous will be lifted up Psalm 76 For the chief musician On stringed instruments A psalm by Asaph A song In Judah,
God is known His name is great in Israel His tabernacle is also in Salem His dwelling place in Zion There he broke the flaming arrows of the bow The shield and the sword And the weapons of war Glorious are you and excellent More than mountains of game Brave men lie plundered They have slept their last sleep None of the men of war can lift their hands At your rebuke,
God of Jacob Both chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep You,
Even you,
Are to be feared Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?
You pronounced judgment from heaven The earth feared and was silent When God arose to judgment To save all the afflicted ones of the earth Surely your wrath on man will bring praises to you The survivors of your wrath are restrained Make vows to God and fulfill them Let all of his neighbors bring gifts to him Who is to be feared He will cut off the spirit of princes He is feared by the kings of the earth Psalm 77 For the chief musician To Judgathan A psalm by Asaph My cry goes to God Indeed,
I cry to God for help And for Him to listen to me In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord My hand was stretched out in the night And didn't get tired My soul refused to be comforted I remember God And I groan I complain And my spirit is overwhelmed You hold my eyes open I am so troubled that I can't speak I have considered the days of long ago The years of ancient times I remember my song in the night I consider in my own heart My spirit diligently asks Will the Lord reject us forever?
Will He be favorable no more?
Has His love and kindness vanished forever?
Does His promise fail for generations?
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has He,
In anger,
Withheld His compassion?
Then I thought I will plead to this The years of the right hand of the Most High I will remember the Lord's deeds For I will remember your wonders of long ago I will also meditate on all your deeds And consider your doings Your way,
God,
Is righteous What God is great like God?
You are the God who does wonders You have made your strength known among the people You have redeemed your people with your arm The sons of Jacob and Joseph The water saw you,
God The water saw you and they thrashed The depths also convulsed The clouds poured out water The skies resounded with thunder Your arrows also flashed around The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind The lightning lit up the world The earth trembled and shook Your way was through the sea Your path was through the great waters Your footsteps were not known You led your people like a flock By the hand of Moses and Aaron Psalm 78 A Contemplation by Asaph Hear my teaching,
My people Turn your ears to the words of my mouth I will open my mouth in a parable I will utter dark sayings of old Which we have heard and known And our fathers have told us We will not hide them from their children Telling to the generation to come the praises of God His strength and His wondrous deeds that He has done For He established a covenant in Jacob And appointed a teaching in Israel Which He commanded our fathers That they should make them known to their children That the generation to come might know Even the children who would be born later Who would arise and tell their children So that they might set their hope in God And not forget God's deeds But keep His commandments And might not be as their fathers A stubborn and rebellious generation A generation that didn't make their hearts loyal Whose spirit was not steadfast with God The children of Ephraim Being armed and carrying bows Turned back in the day of battle They didn't keep God's covenant And refused to walk in His law They forgot His doings His wondrous deeds that He had shown them He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers In the land of Egypt,
In the field of Zon He split the sea and caused them to pass through He made the waters stand as a heap In the daytime,
He also led them with a cloud And at night,
With a great light of fire He split rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant water like out of the depths He brought streams also out of the rock And caused the waters to run down like rivers Yet they still went on to sin against Him To rebel against the Most High in the desert They tempted God in their heart By asking for food meeting their desire Yes,
They spoke against God They said,
Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
And look,
He struck the rock So that water gushed out and streams overflowed Can He give bread also?
Will He provide meat for His people?
Therefore,
God heard and was angry A fire was kindled against Jacob Anger also went up against Israel Because they didn't believe in God And didn't trust in His salvation Yet He commanded the skies above And opened the doors of heaven He rained down manna on them to eat And gave them food from the sky Man ate the bread of angels He sent them food to fill them He caused the east wind to blow in the sky By His power,
He guided the south wind He also rained meat on them like the dust Winged birds as the sand of the seas He let them fall in the middle of the camp around their tents So they ate and were filled He gave them their own desire They didn't turn from their cravings Their food was still in their mouth When the anger of God went up against them Killed some of the fattest And struck down the young men of Israel For by all this,
They still sinned And didn't believe in His wondrous works Therefore,
He ended their days of arrogance And their years in terror When He killed them,
Then people sought after Him They returned and sought God earnestly They remembered that God was their rock The Most High God,
Their Redeemer But they flattered Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue For their heart was not right with Him Neither were they faithful in His covenant But He,
Being merciful,
Forgave sin And didn't destroy them Yes,
Many times He turned His anger away And didn't stir up all His wrath He remembered that they were but flesh A wind that passes and doesn't come again How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert They turned again and tempted God And provoked the Holy One of Israel They didn't remember His hand Nor the day when He redeemed them from the enemy How He set His signs in Egypt His wonders in the field of Zon He turned their rivers and streams into blood So that they could not drink He sent them swarms of flies which devoured them And frogs which destroyed them He also gave them an increase in insects And their farming to the locust He destroyed their vines with hail Their sycamore fig trees with frost He also gave over their livestock to the hail And their flocks to bolts of lightning He threw on them the fierceness of His anger Wrath,
Indignation,
And trouble And angels of wrath He made a path for His anger He didn't spare their soul from death But gave their life over to the plague And struck all the firstborn in Egypt The chief of their strength in the tents of Ham But He led out His own people like sheep And guided them in the wilderness like a flock He led them safely so that they weren't afraid But the sea drowned their enemies He brought them to the border of His sanctuary To His mountain which His right hand had taken He also drove out the nations before them Gave them for an inheritance by family line And made the tribes of Israel to live in their tents Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God And didn't keep His laws But turned back and dealt deceitfully like their fathers They were twisted like an untrustworthy bow For they provoked Him to anger with their worship of other gods And moved Him to jealousy with their worship to them When God heard this He was angry And greatly detested Israel So that He abandoned the tent of Shiloh The tent which He placed among men And delivered His strength into captivity His glory into the enemy's hand He also gave His people over to the sword And was angry with His people Fire devoured their young men Their virgins had no wedding song Their priests fell by the sword And their widows couldn't weep Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep Like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine He struck back His enemies He put them to a perpetual disgrace Moreover,
He rejected the tent of Joseph And didn't choose the tribe of Ephraim But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion,
Which He loved He built His sanctuary like the heights Like the earth,
Which He has established forever He also chose David,
His servant And took him from the sheep pen From following the youths that have their young And brought him to be shepherd of Jacob his people,
And Israel his inheritance.
So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
