Shanti is chanted three times to invoke peace in the three realms of existence. Adhibhautik relates to the material world—daily life and disturbances caused by people, situations, and our surroundings. We seek protection from these external disruptions. Adhidaivik relates to nature and cosmic forces. Since events like natural disasters are beyond human control, we pray for peace and grace from higher powers. Adhyatmik relates to the inner spiritual realm—our thoughts, emotions, and ego. Attachments, aversions, and inner turbulence disturb our peace, and the third Shanti invokes inner harmony. Chanting Shanti, Shanti, Shanti invites peace within, peace in the world around us, and peace in the soul.
