**Note: Truth does not always sound pleasant. If the mind is not really peaceful now, it might not be a perfect moment to listen to this podcast, one has to be aware of the emotions or reactions that can block one from listenING ATTENTIVELY and with HUMILITY. This talk is a meditation practice. What one needs to do is listen attentively, without getting stuck in words, examine the mind in silence, not agree or disagree, just look at the mind as it is. Doing so is already part of true meditation.

What is freedom?

The freedom as a concept is very soothing,

Very pleasant.

But what is freedom?

To understand freedom,

We have to inquire freely.

Or else we can't inquire when a mind is trapped in thoughts,

In all kinds of identification,

All kinds of attachment.

The mind simply can't inquire,

Because the mind has been trapped in a direction,

In a corner,

And such a mind can't really inquire freely.

In this Western civilization,

People generally think freedom is do whatever you want to do.

And this definition is perhaps the foundation of this permissive society.

Do whatever you want is a trap,

Isn't it?

The wanting is the desire.

When the mind is trapped in the desire,

And the mind just does according to the desire,

The pattern of the mind.

And if this is the freedom,

Does that mean that the mind is free to be trapped?

So this very definition of freedom has its own conflict contradiction.

Look around this world.

The life is so individual,

Self-centered,

Egocentric.

The mind is trapped in all kinds of patterns.

The self,

The ego itself,

Is the biggest pattern ever.

In the pattern,

The mind is trapped in all kinds of desires,

Which creates numerous urges,

Which are irresistible.

And kidnapped by those urges,

The mind has to do must do it,

Or else the mind feels in great conflict.

And this makes society more and more permissive,

Because the urge,

The desire,

Is controlling,

Is dominating the society.

And this freedom is a trap by itself.
