Hello and welcome back to Positive Pagan. I'm Lisa Wagner and today I thought we would talk about how to simplify your magic. It's an interesting thought about simplifying because to simplify means that we would probably try to strip out all the things that we would like to have like in our rituals or how we practice our magic but there is a certain beauty and magic in just simplifying completely. What you can do to begin with is to simplify your life because I feel like if you simplify your life you can simplify the magic that you do and this is not to say anything about elaborate rituals or rituals with your community or with your coven. That's fine and that's great. What I'm saying is for your personal use. Sometimes I find that simplifying my magic makes it more effective. Let me give you an example. So to begin with this past oh I don't know a couple weeks or so you know spring is coming and you know the urge to spring clean may overtake you. You may be sitting there waiting for spring to happen. I know there's been lots of snow all over the country but you sit there and you wait for winter to either be over or spring to begin and in that liminal state think about what you can do to simplify your life. So I began with my closet. I've had the same closet filled with the same clothes for at least the last couple years and every time I would be in there I would be like I need to clean this closet. I'm sure you have spaces like that in your home right? So finally one day I just did it and I've always said and I say that in my book Positive Pagan Staying Upbeat in an Offbeat World that you can get me from point A to point B but getting me to point A can take years sometimes months sometimes not so badly but a lot of times I usually feel that just to get to point A I sort of have to gear myself up and sort of like when you go swimming you take a deep breath and you jump in knowing how cold the water will be it's sort of like that you just take a deep breath and you jump in and so one day when I had a couple hours free I decided to take a deep breath and plunge just into cleaning out my closet long story short I just had like four bags of clothes I was never going to wear again clothes that you know I'd been keeping for sentimental sake just clothes I hadn't seen in a while but knew I would never wear again I was ruthless and I got rid of like about four bags of clothes and it has made the biggest difference in my mornings who would have thought I have a pretty simple wardrobe to begin with so it's not like I have to choose from countless countless outfits like you know Cher and Clueless I basically just got rid of all the extra stuff the extra stuff that I would never wear and I knew I would never wear and it was just taking up space and it was interesting because it's made my mornings so much simpler and like I said it's not like I have a huge wardrobe my uniform quote-unquote is very simple and fortunately I'm you know can wear mostly casual clothes so that works out great I don't have to do the corporate thing anymore but I found that it was just an amazing energy change and it's sort of like you know like when people say make your bed and you think well okay but what's the point I will just end up back in the bed at the end of the day well yeah but when you make your bed what they don't tell you is it changes up the energy in your room and it also it checks off something that you've done that day and it gives you that sense of accomplishment which can be a boost to keep you going through the rest of your day so back to my closet is that exact same feeling of just like wow I finally got it done I feel so much better choosing clothes is so much simpler I'm not agonizing over what should I wear today because it is pretty simple I used to be in awe of Steve Jobs at Apple how he could just sit there and be content with wearing a turtleneck and a pair of jeans but I do see his point he doesn't have to think about what he wears so apply that concept to your magic are your rituals overwhelming you are you concerned that you know you're not going to have all the right steps or do all the right things so therefore you can't do ritual or you can't celebrate the new moon or the full moon well I'm here to tell you that no you can simplify it and please don't feel bad about it there have been times where there has been a wheel of the year celebration a new moon or a full moon and my life had been so busy at that point that I didn't even think about it till I went to bed and so at that point when I realized it I just offered a few words of gratitude and that was it that was actually sufficient and apply that to what you like to do for any of those events if you feel like magic has to go by the wayside because your life is too complicated or too busy then like I said simplify it the simplest thing you can do and the most magical and for me the most potent is just lighting a candle just close out the rest of the world light a candle and gaze into that flame be still and listen see what kind of messages that you get from your deities or from your ancestors or just from the world itself nature is talking to us sometimes very loudly and sometimes that's the only time we pay attention so try to get used to paying attention to the small still voices of messages that you'll receive the next thing you can do say for example we have an upcoming full moon so for the full moon how about just looking at the moon there's a simple idea right you just go outside and look at the moon and wonder at its beauty and its power and how it affects the tides and how it affects people and just spend some time soaking up that energy regardless of what you believe the moon is a very powerful force in nature so why not try to tie yourself to it and go along with the flow of it full moons are great times for releasing so a simple thing that you could do is just write down all the things that you want to get rid of or that no longer serve you burn them in your little cauldron or in your bonfire pit or wherever you would be able to have a fire or just burn it with a match in a fireproof bowl and watch the flames and take that time for deep breathing and to look into the things that you are releasing and just realize like wow I can let it go as simply as this and feel the weight fall off your shoulders another simple thing you can do is make moon water and use that moon water to add some oomph to your spell work or just some oomph to your daily coffee or tea you can leave some water out in a safe space underneath the light of the full moon or the new moon or whichever moon that you choose to use you could do it every single moon if you want to it's your choice it's whatever makes your life easier but try doing that one time and see how you feel add that moon water to your plants or like I said to your morning beverage whether it be coffee or tea or just drink it straight use filtered water I would suggest that leave it outside in a safe space let it bathe in the moonlight or just hold it while you're under the moon and you could do two things at once isn't that amazing and other things to do include just observe nature see what's around you see what's in your little pocket of the world even if you're in a city you can see nature in the weeds that are springing up in the concrete the birds that fly by the trees that are growing in your neighborhood park explore your world and use that to simplify your magic in your life and the simplest of all magics is to offer gratitude simply say thank you and realize all the things that you have to be grateful for because gratitude is also an energy source because when you're filled with gratitude it helps you to be grateful and when you're filled with gratitude it helps you feel better and it helps you move forward into things that you want to do whether it be your spell work or trying to finish this project or to make things happen just think about that you're filled with gratitude just I mean just go from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet feeling grateful for everything that's in between or your morning cup of coffee be grateful for the food that's on your table a roof over your head or the people in your life being grateful just fills you with so much magic try it and see and then let me know how it goes for you and if you want to you can further that gratitude practice by writing it down in a gratitude journal you could paint one of your walls in your home with chalk paint and just write it up daily or get like a chalkboard and then that way you could just list all the things that you're grateful for and when it's in your eyes view it just reinforces all the amazing things that you're grateful for as well so I hope this helps to simplify your
