Perhaps right now,
Or at least some point along your creative journey,
Have felt that strong pull to look outside yourself?
You crave someone else's opinion,
Or approval,
Or their go-ahead.
It's a very human experience,
Isn't it?
We look to external sources for various reasons,
And initially this can be very beneficial.
We might seek permission.
Is it okay for me to pursue this?
Do I have the right to call myself an artist,
A writer,
A musician,
A creator?
Often we carry old narratives,
Or societal expectations that tell us creativity is a luxury,
Or only for special people.
We might unconsciously wait for someone else to say,
Yes,
You can,
You are allowed,
Permission,
Or perhaps validation.
Am I on the right track?
Does this resonate with anyone else?
We pour our heart into something,
And then naturally,
We want to know if it connects,
If it's good.
We look for that nod,
That comment,
That external reflection that tells us our efforts are worthwhile.
Validation.
How about direction?
Where do I even begin?
What tools do I need?
What is the next step?
Especially when we're starting a new creative venture,
The path can feel murky.
We consult experts,
Read books,
Take courses.
All of these offer invaluable guidance from those who have walked a similar path.
Direction.
Think of it like a young sapling.
When it's just planted,
It often needs a stake to grow straight and strong,
To protect it from the wind until its roots can firmly grip that earth.
These external supports,
A mentor's advice,
A peer's encouragement,
A teacher's guidance,
Can give us a crucial foothold,
A starting point,
And help us feel less alone in our creative endeavors.
There is nothing inherently wrong with this initial reliance.
It's a natural phase of growth.
However,
There comes a critical juncture,
A turning point,
Where relying solely or even primarily on these external sources can actually become a significant creative roadblock.
If we constantly wait for someone else to give us the green light,
To tell us we're ready,
We risk getting caught in a subtle yet powerful trap.
What does that trap look like?
It can manifest as stagnation.
We never truly start,
Or we stop dead in our tracks,
The moment that external affirmation isn't immediately present.
If we only create when praised,
What happens when the praise stops?
Or worse,
When criticism arrives?
Our creative flow becomes dependent on something outside our control.
Rather than flowing freely from within,
Loss of authenticity.
When our primary goal is external validation,
We might unconsciously begin to twist our creative vision to fit what we think others want,
Rather than what truly calls to us.
We might create for the market,

Trying to echo what we perceive as popular or acceptable.

Groundbreaking work often comes from a place of deep,
Uncompromised self-expression,
Not from chasing trends or approval,
Or disempowerment.
This is perhaps the most insidious aspect.
When we constantly seek external approval,
We are in essence handing over our creative agency.
We are saying,
My worth,
My direction,
My creative impulse,
Is in your hands.
We then become a passenger in our own creative vehicle,
Rather than the driver.
The profound truth is this,
The outside world,
As supportive and wonderful as it can be,
Cannot give us self-belief.
It offers feedback,
Encouragement,
Even constructive criticism.
But it cannot instill the deep,
Quiet conviction that resides within us.
No one else can define your worth,
Or tell you if your unique creative spark is valid.
That has to come from you.
And here's another crucial point.
The outside world cannot hand you your path.
No one can tell you exactly your own unique creative journey will unfold.
They haven't walked your exact steps.
They haven't seen through your unique lenses.
They don't possess your specific combination of experiences,
Passions,

To wait for someone to illuminate a perfectly paved road for you,
