Hello,
My name is Jaclyn and I enjoy writing stories.
I also enjoy reading them to you,
So settle down,
Make yourself comfortable,
Because my next story is about to begin.
The Golf Ball Hurry up,
Dave,
We're off in three minutes,
Pam said to her husband as she headed towards the first tee.
I'll be there in a tick,
Love.
I've just got to buy a ball,
Dave replied as he put his hand into a large basket filled with second-hand golf balls and pulled one out.
Just this one,
Please,
Tom,
Dave said as he placed some money on the counter.
You're playing with a pink ball today then,
Dave,
Said Tom,
Putting the money in the till.
Yes,
Fingers cross it will help with my game,
Replied Dave.
I've not been playing at all well lately.
I hope it brings you some good luck,
Tom said.
Enjoy your game.
Dave arrived on the first tee just as his wife was hitting her ball.
That's a good drive,
Pam,
He said.
Let's see how well my new ball flies.
Dave placed his tee in the ground and balanced his pink ball on the top.
Getting into position,
He prepared himself and then swung his driver as hard as he could.
Smack!
The pink ball flew out into the air and slowly landed in the middle of the fairway with a bump.
Here we go again,
Said the pink golf ball.
I was quite happy nestled amongst my friends in that basket.
I wonder how long it will take before this guy loses me.
At that moment,
Dave was standing in front of the pink ball,
Ready for his next shot.
Watch this ball fly,
Pam,
He said as he took aim.
Thwack!
The pink ball flew up into the air and landed in some long grass.
Oh,
It's dark in here.
The pink ball mumbled to himself.
I hope he manages to find me okay.
Suddenly,
Something knocked against him.
In the dark,
He could just make out a yellow blob.
Hey,
Nice to see you,
Said the yellow blob.
Are you a golf ball?
Asked the pink ball.
It's dark in here amongst this thick,
Long grass and I can't quite see you.
Yes,
I am,
Replied the yellow blob.
I spotted you as I flew in.
My name's Taylor.
They tell me I'm made for this game.
My name's Max,
Said the pink ball.
The way this guy hits me,
I fly all over the place.
Before the golf balls could say another word to each other,
They heard Dave shouting to his wife.
I can see your ball.
It's over here.
Oh,
And mine is right beside it.
That's a bit of luck.
I'll knock them out onto the fairway.
No point trying to hit a good shot from this long grass.
And he tapped both golf balls out of the darkness.
Dave took his next shot.
Clonk.
Max once again flew into the air,
But landed very quickly and rolled a short distance.
You nearly hit the flagpole,
Said Pam.
Nice shot,
Dear.
Now let's see if I can do any better.
Clonk.
Taylor flew into the air,
Landed on the green and rolled plop into the hole.
Great shot,
Love,
Said Dave.
You made that look so simple.
And he went over to his ball and tapped it into the hole.
This is a bit cosy,
Said Taylor,
As Max landed on top of him.
But before Max could reply,
Both balls were plucked out of the hole by Dave,
And immediately Taylor went flying through the air as he was thrown over to Pam.
Max was feeling quite comfortable in Dave's palm when all of a sudden he became very wet and then a hard brush began scrubbing him all over.
At last they filled this ball wash machine with water,
Said Dave,
As he took his pink ball out and wiped it on a towel.
Look how clean this ball is now.
Max hadn't enjoyed that experience at all and was glad it was over.
He was not a big fan of water and really didn't like being scrubbed.
As the couple prepared to tee off at the next hole,
Pam said,
Be careful here,
Dave.
Remember there's a small pond halfway up the fairway.
Oh,
I'll get over that no problem love,
Said Dave confidently as he teed up his pink golf ball.
Here goes.
And he swung his golf club as hard as he could.
Smack!
The ball soared high in the air.
Out over the pond it flew and then it slowly came down.
Splash!
It landed on the edge of the water.
What another soaking,
Thought Max.
Two dunks in five minutes really is not fair.
It was starting to get a little chilly in the water and Max wondered if he was there to stay.
As the water lapped over him he settled into the mud and reminisced about flying through the air,
Something he really enjoyed doing.
Look,
There's your pink ball,
Pam said to her husband.
It's lying just under the water by the edge of the pond.
I see it,
Said Dave.
Max felt a nudge as a golf club dragged him out of the mud and onto the grass.
I thought I'd lost it for a minute there,
Said Dave.
Whack!
Max flew up into the air again and the drops of water flew off him just before he fell to the ground.
You made it then,
Said Taylor,
As Max rolled next to him on the green.
It sounded like you were a goner when you splashed into that water.
I was a little worried myself,
Explained Max.
That's how I landed up in the basket of second-hand balls the last time.
Only that time I landed in the middle of the pond along with many other golf balls.
Most of us were pulled out a few weeks ago by a big net.
Clink!
Max rolled off into the hole and Dave picked him up.
Dave and his wife stood on the tee at the next hole and looked around.
There's a lot of trees out there,
Said Pam,
Looking down the fairway.
This could be a tricky shot if we're not careful.
That won't be a problem.
We're both playing really well today,
Said Dave.
Come on,
You go first.
Pam hit her ball nice and straight and it landed in the middle of the fairway.
Then it was Dave's turn.
He placed his pink ball on the tee and got into position.
Smack!
The ball soared into the air.
It seemed to be going for miles when all of a sudden it hit a big tree and landed amongst some dried leaves.
Max spluttered for a second,
But once he caught his breath he found it was quite nice lying on the soft pile of leaves.
He looked up and could see the tree branches hanging over him and in between them the blue sky.
A perfect day for golf.
Max waited,
Expecting Dave or Pam to find him.
But nobody did.
All he could hear was the sound of the birds.
Oh dear,
He thought,
Seems like I'm lost this time.
Time for a nap.
And he drifted off to sleep.
Clink!
A golf club woke Max and sent him flying into the air.
This ball is pretty good,
Said the girl who had hit him.
It's a pretty colour too.
What a lucky find.
It wasn't lucky for whoever lost it,
Said another girl.
Oh,
Tina,
You're just jealous because I'm always finding golf balls,
Said the first girl.
I really don't care how many balls you find,
Sue,
Snapped Tina,
A little miffed by her friend's comment.
Second hand balls are not my favourite,
As you know.
Anyway,
My dad will buy me golf balls whenever I need them.
Now come on,
Let's finish playing before it gets dark.
Sue and Tina walked up to the next tee and took their shots.
Smack!
Sue hit the pink golf ball as hard as she could,
But instead of the ball going straight ahead,
It flew left and landed in the middle of a large pond.
Splosh!
As Max sank to the bottom of the pond,
He realised he was truly lost this time.
Clunk!
Max came to rest on top of some other golf balls.
Sorry about that,
He said to them.
That's okay,
Said the balls together.
We are used to it.
How long have you been down here?
Max asked.
A few days,
They replied.
Well,
Nice to meet you all,
Max said,
As he settled down into the mud between the other golf balls and watched the light slowly disappear as night fell.
The next morning Max was woken by the sunlight up above him as it danced on the water.
Suddenly there was a lot of splashing and then he felt the other golf balls surrounding him like a giant hug.
He couldn't see what was going on because there were so many golf balls blocking his vision.
Soon the water disappeared and Max realised they had all been poured out of the pond by a big net.
They were poured into a machine with clean water and then they were dried.
Finally they were put into a large basket,
Back in the golf shop.
Hello,
Max,
Said a voice.
Max rolled around in the basket and saw Taylor lying nearby.
Hi,
Taylor,
Said Max,
Happy to see his friend again.
I guess it was a bad golf day for Pam yesterday too.
Yes,
She lost me on the last hole,
Taylor explained.
Such a shame because she was playing a great game.
Well,
I'm happy to see you,
Said Max.
Let's hope some better players choose us next time.
And the two golf balls spent the rest of the day getting to know the other golf balls,
Who were also in the large basket.
I hope you enjoyed listening to my story.
I'd like to ask you a question.
Have you ever played golf?
Or if you haven't,
Would you like to give it a try?
