Whoops!
By the mindful bee.
In a dip in the park by the old greystone wall,
The wishing well stood,
Not big and not tall.
It was round and stony,
And over the top a roof kept the sun off and hid the steep drop.
A little girl,
Lou,
Walked right up to the rim.
She stretched up on tiptoes so she could peer in.
My goodness,
She whispered,
That hole is so dark,
It's blacker than anything else in this park.
Lou wanted a wish more than quite anything,
And she knew that she needed a coin to throw in.
She patted her pockets,
But couldn't find any.
Just plenty of fluff,
But not one single penny.
And uh-oh,
As she stood at the edge of the well,
She wobbled,
Then toppled,
And whoops!
In she fell.
It wasn't too bad,
Water wasn't too deep,
But she couldn't climb out as the sides were too steep.
I'm stuck,
She panicked and sucked at her thumb.
Then standing up bellowed,
I want my mum!
A shadow appeared at the hole up above,
And mum said,
Good grief,
Is that you down there,
Love?
But goodness,
Oh dear,
What on earth should mum do?
She hadn't a rope with which to pull,
Lou.
So she took off her belt,
And giving a yell,
Mum called,
Grab the belt!
As she leant down the well,
And she waggled the belt in the hole to and fro,
So that Lou could catch hold of the end down below.
But uh-oh,
As she stood at the edge of the well,
Mum wobbled,
Then toppled,
And whoops!
In she fell.
Ouch!
Cried Lou's mum as she fell to the floor.
Then she cuddled Lou tight and hugged her some more,
And they both shouted,
Help!
Till they thought they might pop,
And a round smiley face soon appeared at the top.
A man with his dog had heard their loud shout,
And had come to see what all the noise was about.
But goodness,
Oh dear,
What on earth should he do?
He hadn't a rope to rescue the two.
So he took off his dog lead,
And giving a yell,
He called,
Grab the lead!
As he leant down the well,
And he waggled the lead in the hole to and fro,
So that Lou could catch hold of the end down below.
But uh-oh,
As he stood at the edge of the well,
He wobbled,
Then toppled,
And whoops!
In he fell.
Good afternoon,
Ladies!
He greeted the two as he fell to the floor and tripped over Lou.
Watch yourself there!
His voice rang in the cavern.
What terrible luck we seem to be having!
So the man and Lou's mum,
And of course little Lou,
Sat there all squashed,
Thinking,
What shall we do?
Till a shadow appeared,
And a voice said,
Hello?
Is somebody trapped in the well down below?
The trio stood up and started to shout,
We all fell down this well and we cannot get out!
They cried and they pleaded,
Their voices so loud,
That outside the well they soon drew quite a crowd.
Then there came from the middle the tiniest shout,
It's a real wishing well,
So let's just wish them out!
The people all turned to see who had spoken and spotted the boy who was clearly not joking.
The crowd all agreed,
Well let's see if you can!
So he threw in a coin,
Cleared his throat and began,
I wish for these three to come out of the well!
And as soon as he wished it,
They flew out,
Pal-mal!
Oh how the crowd cheered as the boy crowed,
We got him!
Lou's mum came to rest,
Though she quite bruised her bottom.
The man landed hard with an almighty bump,
And Lou fell enrolled with a thumpety-thump.
But hooray!
They all shouted,
We're finally free!
And they high-fived the boy who had rescued the three.
So if you're near a well,
It's quite a good thing to have a coin handy in case you fall in.
