Dear friends,
As I lay in bed this morning,
I drifted into one of those half-dream states.
You know the feeling,
That amazing space where ideas come knocking on the door.
I imagined myself listening to a song thrush calling out its song of welcome to the new day.
Now it was early morning before dawn here in Dublin.
Not the time or the weather for a wise song thrush to be up and about.
But I imagined him perched on the tree outside our window.
Encouraged by a break in the incessant rain which has settled here in the last few days.
And has people asking when will the monsoon end?
A song thrush singing of new beginnings.
I am sure you will have come across the lines.
Morning has broken,
Like the first morning.
Blackboard has spoken,
Like the first board.
It must be that we have learned to sing by listening to the boards.
Surely they were singing and bringing joy to the world long before we came on the scene.
Boards have given us the gift of music.
And music has produced songs of love,
Imagination,
Hope,
Resilience and possibility.
You are my sunshine.
You'll never walk alone.
Bridge over troubled water.
I believe.
Where have all the flowers gone?
This little light of mine.
Imagine.
We shall overcome.
You will remember as well,
The lines,
The boards they sang at the break of day.
In that Leonard Cohen song,
We are urged not to dwell on what has passed away.
Start again is the message as each new day dawns.
The song is a reminder that we can each start again.
Each one of us has the capacity to recreate ourselves and begin anew.
This is a message of possibility,
Not only for each of us as individuals,
But for organisations,
Small and large.
It's a message for political systems and for countries themselves.
The morning message to begin again is not only an important urging.
Start again is a consequence of the inevitability of change.
It's a reminder to us to be humble in the good times and to hold on to hope in darker times.
Everything changes.
This too shall pass.
Start again is a reminder that each of us holds a key to the door of a better world to come.
May it be so.
May it be soon.
Namaste.
