I think a main part of.
Of who I am as a person is a bridger.
You know,
I feel.
.
.
Deeply motivated to bridge things that haven't been bridged before.
So I see problem,
You know,
Observation A,
Observation B,
Like,
Oh,
There's probably something that connects these.
So that's something that is kind of been a common thread through my path in science.
I'd like to be in between disciplines because this is,
I feel like we're so much of the actionable knowledge,
Right?
The knowledge that will help us move towards a healthier,
More sustainable world lies at the intersection of disciplines.
Right,
The disciplinary silos that we all trained in.
Are great and we've learned so much.
If we're really going to make a change and improve human health and well-being,
The information we need,
The knowledge we need is at the intersection of disciplines,
Not necessarily within each discipline.
No one discipline,
Because it's a piece of the whole.
No one discipline can provide the answers and can provide a true,
Accurate perspective of the whole because it's only a little piece of the whole.
So by staying and operating in between disciplines,
I think it's given my lab a perspective that is more holistic and closer to the truth.
And nobody has the truth,
And that's what makes science interesting,
Because you're trying to find and kind of feel and smell and understand where is the truth.
And if you then move,
You keep moving towards this,
I think you make progress.
And our approach to moving towards a truer,
More accurate,
More complete understanding of human health has been to bridge the mind and the body and psychobiology and then using mitochondria as an instrument for that.
So we see mitochondria as this dynamic energetic portal,
And by leveraging the tools that are available from mitochondrial science,
And by pushing mitochondrial science towards a more holistic view,
I think my role has been to help develop a science of energy.
That is getting us to the big questions about what is health?
What does it mean to be healthy?
How do you preserve health?
What is healing?
The process of maintaining health?
What is it that happens at the level of genes,
At the level of mitochondria,
At the level of the cell,
At the level of the whole being,
At the level of the mind,
Right?
What happens to make healing possible?
That allows people to preserve and to be in this optimal state of health for years and decades.
This is completely untapped,
Like we do not have a science of healing.
This is amazing.
We have planetary sciences,
Earth science,
We have neuroscience,
We have computer science.
There is no science of the healing process.
This is what I want to do.
This is what I'm here for.
To understand the healing process,
We need to understand deeply the physical reality of what we are,
The physical body,
But we need also to integrate and include the human experience,
Which is deeply,
Fundamentally what we are.
Just the experience of being alive,
Right?
Of feeling things,
Of experiencing things.
And somehow those things must come together.
This is the bridging.
