When you turn out the lights and darkness falls,
If you'll just wait,
The eyes adjust and begin to take in more light,
And you begin to see again,
But in a new way.
You begin to see in the dark,
But you must be willing to wait for the eyes to adjust naturally on their own time,
Out of your control.
You cannot make the eyes adjust by force of will,
And yet they are a part of you.
You cannot force it,
But if you'll wait and let it happen,
It does naturally.
When darkness falls,
Whatever darkness means or looks like or feels like to you,
When darkness falls,
Don't rush to turn on the lights.
As the poet Hafez wrote,
Don't surrender your loneliness so quickly,
Let it cut more deep,
Let it season and ferment you as few human or even divine ingredients can.
Don't surrender your loneliness so quickly.
When you feel the darkness,
Don't rush to turn on the lights.
Wait for an internal vision,
An internal light to adjust to the darkness on its own time.
This internal light knows the way,
If you'll let it show you.
