Make sure that you're sitting or laying in a really comfortable position.

Preferably lay down so that you can completely relax during the meditation.

Let your body relax and get heavy.

If you haven't done so already,

Close your eyes.

When you close your eyes,

I want you to start to focus on the fact that it's dark inside.

But rather than it be dark and the darkness be something that's scary,

Imagine that closing your eyes is actually the beginning of something very magical.

Imagine that the darkness you see now with your eyes closed is the opening,

The beginning of a whole new experience.

Something that could be very special,

Something that could be amazing.

Staring into the darkness there in front of you,

Start to see it as a vast,

Wide,

Open space with multiple opportunities.

Just stare around as if you're looking to the left and you're looking to the right and you're staring into this big,

Wide,

Vast,

Open space.

This big space represents the doorway into your imagination.

Imagine that you're somewhere very special right now.

Somewhere out in nature,

A place where you love to go.

Maybe it's the beach,

Maybe it's the forest,

The fields,

The flowers.

You could be sat on top of a quiet hill in the middle of nowhere.

Think of somewhere where you would like to go in nature.

And imagine that vast,

Wide,

Open space there in front of you starts to fill with images of what that would look like.

Looking down at your feet,

You notice what your feet are resting on or standing on,

What the earth is like underneath your feet.

Looking over to your left,

Taking notice of what you see over there,

What would be there in your perfect place in nature.

Looking straight in front of you,

Noticing now lots of little details about your perfect place.

The colours start to get clear,

The images start to become clearer.

Looking over to your right and noticing what you see over there,

What would it look like,

What would be there in your mind.

Imagine you're sat down in your special place in nature.

And you're just taking it all in.

The smells,

The sounds,

The sights of everything around you.

You feel good in this place,

Very grounded and stable.

Your heartbeat is calm and relaxed.

Your shoulders are soft and relaxed and your jaw is very,

Very relaxed.

You just feel at peace and it's quiet,

Perfect.

The perfect place to go in your mind.

It really feels like you're right there in your perfect spot in nature.

Imagine that.

Now,

Imagine that you're wiping that space there in front of you completely clean once again.

So all that you see when you look out into that vast open space is just darkness once again.

Possibilities waiting to be created.

This time,

Imagine that in the darkness there is a very special face.

A face that's dear to you,

That you love.

The face of someone you love very much.

Allow the face to be quite close to yours.

And if it's right there in front of your own face,

You can see their eyes and their nose and their features very clearly.

And if you lifted your hand up,

You could touch their face.

It's that close.

Imagine in your mind that you're having a sweet,

Intimate conversation with this person.

Whoever it is.

You're talking in depth.

You're sharing and listening to each other.

The face is very,

Very clear and detailed.

It's a nice place to be.

You're enjoying the conversation and the closeness with this loved one.

You don't feel alone.

You feel like someone's right there with you.

Now,

Imagine it's nighttime.

Or it might actually be nighttime as you listen to this.

All the lights go out and it's dark.

Normally you have a fear of the dark or you just don't like being in the dark.

But what you notice is when you stare around your room in the dark,

It feels just like that vast,

Wide open space of your imagination when you close your eyes.

You could be laid there with your eyes open right now,

But it feels just like that vast space in your mind waiting for something magical to happen.

Rather than having a sense of fear,

You feel a sense of excitement.

Late there in the dark,

You know that you can create anything in your mind.

You can pull back that special person and imagine they're right there in front of your face and you're with them and talking to them and loving them.

Even though you're laid there with your eyes open,

You can still create this in your mind.

Or you could be in your place of nature.

Imagine it right now.

If you were in the forest,

There's trees all around you.

The earth is damp and refreshing underneath your feet.

Imagine as you stare around your dark room that you can see the trees and the birds and it feels nice to be in this place.

It's your special place in nature.

Do you see how you can completely change your attitude towards the darkness?

The darkness is actually something very magical.

Like the doorway to a whole other world that's waiting there in your imagination.

It's exactly the same as when you close your eyes.

You can create the same magic.

You're safe.

You're not alone.

Everything is okay.

The darkness is actually your friend.

This is feedback from my 12 year old daughter, Svara: My fear of the dark has affected my sleep in so many ways and this conquered my fear completely. I am truly grateful to you, Cory because I have tried a lot of fear meditations and none the worked. I now see the dark as a friend rather than an enemy. You are by far my favorite teacher on insight timer. Thanks!!!
