The Butterfly and the Lighthouse By Lucy Oliveira It was a stormy day.
After flying around looking for a tree to be her home,
The butterfly had somehow got lost.
She'd just turned from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly after spending a long time inside her cocoon in this painful metamorphosis.
Inside of it she felt confused,
Imagining that it would always be that way in her life.
Lonely.
Then she saw a light going around in circles.
She let herself be guided by that light.
It was a lighthouse.
She found safety in that place.
It was warm and dry and provided for her everything she needed.
Her beautiful wings dried and she realised for the first time how beautiful she'd become.
Out in the storm,
The waves kept crashing on the rocks around the lighthouse.
But she felt safe there.
She wasn't afraid or alone anymore.
She felt like she was home.
She rested and didn't think about anything else anymore.
She was happy and content,
Safely hoping and dreaming about everything she would do in her new home.
Then,
On a warm spring day,
She woke up after the rain.
She felt the sunshine over her wings.
A gentle breeze.
And she saw a rainbow.
While the butterfly was flying around,
Exploring her home,
She realised the lighthouse wasn't there anymore.
Only the sunlight.
She also noticed a family of swans on a beautiful lake,
Paddling free.
And birds flying and singing around a strong,
Tall,
Ancient tree.
Animals found refuge in it.
The butterfly saw a perfect leaf on the tree,
Flew to it,
Landed there.
And she felt as she had never felt before.
Something slightly similar to what she felt with the lighthouse,
But infinitely better.
She felt home on that tree.
She felt free.
The butterfly can still see the lighthouse from the tree,
How the sunset and sunrise shine on it,
Revealing its beauty and why she fell in love with it.
She sees the storms,
The waves beating hard on the rocks around it,
The strong winds and the rain all over it.
And the butterfly knows it is strong enough to stand any and all of the storms,
That a new day will always come,
Bringing with it hopes and new dreams.
She thanks the lighthouse for providing her home,
Safety,
Warmth,
Love and peace,
While she needed it there.
Then smiling,
She flies away,
Carried by the never-ending sunlight and its gentle breeze.
And the lighthouse keeps shining.
