This short reading asks us to let go of the striving that has defined so much of our lives. As we age, we may find that we can reflect upon all of the efforts that have driven us throughout the years with a sense of tenderness and accomplishment and thus fall away from identifying with our striving selves; in its place, we may find that we can cultivate soft awareness of acceptance as we move more mindfully into this next phase of our lives. As we age,

We wish to let go of striving.

Striving,

The ego impelling us towards some vision of completion,

Of fulfillment,

Of the end of want.

Like eating one more donut when even that is not enough,

But leaves us wanting.

So,

As we age,

We find that striving itself no longer satisfies,

No longer holds the allure it once did.

We,

Who have achieved so many goals,

Reached so many heights,

And found always there was more to do,

More that had to be accomplished.

Another need to fill,

Another demand.

We may move now from striving to being,

Embodying the love of our lives that we have developed over a lifetime striving,

A lifetime of work.

We can rest now,

Let go of striving,

In the deep and gentle knowledge that each day is a gift,

That we have been tossed up on the shore of this bright new day,

And we can finally let go of striving.
