In the pages of a book set closed upon a shelf,
In a library closed and dark,
Two ladies talked to themselves.
The younger said,
You should leave and find a better friend.
No matter how many times we're read,
You're smarter in the end.
No,
Said simply the elder one,
With that I disagree.
You know things I never will,
Are things I'll never be.
Like what,
The younger did reply.
You know Shakespeare and the rest.
Your grammar is always perfect.
You tell the story best.
That doesn't make me smarter,
Replied the elder one.
You know things that I do not.
The younger said,
Name one.
You know what it is to have a child.
I'll never once know this.
You know what being married's like.
I've never had a kiss.
That means nothing,
Said the other.
That doesn't make me smart.
Yes,
It does,
The elder said,
In matters of the heart.
Why do you stay,
The younger asked.
You're worth much more than me.
My body's sick,
The elder said.
I could ask the same of thee.
Why aren't you playing with your friends whose bodies aren't mistakes?
I love you,
Said the younger one.
And that is all it takes.
Then why compare day after day what one has and has not?
The younger said,
You're missing it.
We're not from the past.
I've seen it.
We're not from the same lot.
The elder side,
Which moved a page,
Then said,
We're in this book.
Always the same story tucked in this corner nook.
I wouldn't be here if I belonged in someone else's tale.
And with that word,
Their world did shake and through the air they sailed.
The tiny bear said to his friend,
I've read this book a ton.
It's full of puzzles,
But they start you out with an easy one.
The bear pawed the pages until he saw the friends,
Then pointed to his own and said,
This is how it begins.
The story is about a journey through the crazy human land.
You have to find the path that's best,
The way the friends should end.
But there are only pictures,
Because we are quite young bears.
But you should read it next.
It's really only fair.
The other cub grabbed the book.
At the two friends he stared,
Surrounded on all sides by plants and creatures wild and rare,
Not one just like the other all different.
He saw that and stared.
What happens next?
The first bear asked.
I don't know,
The other cub proclaimed.
Well,
Who are the friends?
The first bear asked.
The cub pointed with good aim.
That's the first puzzle done,
The bear said with a grin.
How did you know they were the friends?
The other said his chin.
If these are puzzles,
They aren't that hard,
But it is a funny game.
It's easy,
He smirked to his friend.
They're the only ones the same.
