The chill is bone-deep,
Where I am as I record this.
The dark is the deep dark,
Before the Sun even suggests arising.
I don't hate this time.
Sure,
It's a challenge to life and living,
These extremes we face.
But extremes help us appreciate.
The calm.
The quiet.
The regulated,
Even.
Helps us hear.
Well,
It helps me,
Anyway,
To listen.
I had a very long conversation with my youngest son yesterday.
We used to refer to him as a wise old soul.
As a wise age.
Depth.
That motivated him as he moved in the world.
He's a Pisces.
No surprise.
The conversation in and of itself had a lot of insight and value,
But the bead I'm drawing on is the pure fact of communication.
Of having that space that allowed us to have this conversation long and deep.
It was an opportunity for me to listen in a new way.
Now,
Of course,
In the case I'm highlighting here,
It was listening to an external voice.
But as well,
It was about the internal voice.
Mine.
My heart.
My soul.
And its response.
As I work over the canvas in my studio,
Or type across the keyboard to compose a poem or an essay,
It's this same sort of listening.
Multilayered.
An internal knowingness response.
The best I can give it is a divine response.
That spark in me.
In you.
Guiding.
But it's a dance.
With this external voice as well.
Yesterday,
That of my youngest son.
But oftentimes,
Something that's been read.
Someone else's voice in a book.
Conversation on the street,
Even.
This week,
I ask you to start paying attention to this dance,
This interplay of voices.
They mean something.
Beyond the simple conversation that they are.
There's purpose and reason behind the response that you feel as you hear something and it triggers.
Pay attention.
Let it lead you.
Even if it's an old story.
A history repeat.
Pay attention.
You're a new person in this new year.
Let it tell you something new.
There's a reason it's hit in a new way.
Listen.
To the verse this week,
From one of those history places.
Try to hear it in a new way.
Isaiah 3021.
From the Bible.
Old Testament.
Your ear shall hear a word saying,
This is the way.
Walk in it.
Whenever you turn to the right or to the left.

Enjoy this month.
Enjoy the quiet.
The dark.
