Hugo the Hummingbird by R.

M.

Bode.

Hugo the hummingbird is a fast-moving and tiny little flyer.

He frenetically flutters from flower to flower filling his nectar desire.

Hugo has no sense of smell to find the nectar he seeks to consume.

So he uses his sensational color vision to see the bright flowers in bloom.

Hugo uses his tongue to drink the nutrient-rich nectar from a variety of flowers.

Hugo has so many options to choose from as he flies through the daylight hours.

Hugo looks for long tubular flowers that are colorful and bright.

He flies to the nectar-filled bee balm and cardinal flowers within his sight.

Hugo places his long beak inside the flower and uses his tongue to sip the sweet sugary nectar treat.

He can consume almost double his body weight that sure is a lot of nectar to eat.

Hugo has his fill and quickly darts away.

He continues to seek flowers with bright colors on display.

Hugo finds some more nectar-rich flowers,

The honeysuckle and trumpet vine.

He sips more nectar from the rhododendron and the wild columbine.

Hugo finds more flowers for his daily drinking spree.

He sips from the abundant petunia,

Foxglove and daylily.

Hugo swiftly soars off to the star-shaped flowering flocks.

He then samples some nectar from the red flowering hollyhocks.

Hugo sees another one of his favorite nectar-filled flowers.

The sun-soaked meadow sage serves as Hugo's last stop before returning home for the nighttime hours.

Hugo returns back to his home to relax and unwind from his day.

He prepares for sleep to rest and recover without delay.

Hugo hangs upside down from a branch,

Relaxed quietly and deep.

He wants to conserve his energy and get some much-needed sleep.

Hugo is about to enter into a torpor state,

A hibernation slowing down his heartbeat,

Metabolism and respiration rate.

Hugo enters this deep sleep every single night.

He awakens refreshed and energized by the dawn of the sun's warming light.

Thank you for listening to Hugo the Hummingbird's story.

I hope you learned something valuable and new.

May you swiftly soar toward your dreams and always be uniquely you.

May you have a day filled with wonder and joy and a restful and relaxing sleep tonight.
