One of the most important parts of achieving emotional health is making amends to those whom we've hurt in the past. This reading from "Meditations For People Who Do Too Much" (Oct. 22) guides us to make a list of those whom we've wronged. Then we need to make those amends, remembering that we don't do it to attain forgiveness, or to be liked, or to control or manipulate. We do so because it is necessary for us to become, and stay, emotionally healthy.

Meditations for People Who Do Too Much.

Amends.

I have refrained from speaking the truth and have just gone along with a lot of things.

From Marion Cohen.

One of the most important steps in our recovery from our addiction to work,

Caretaking,

Rushing,

And busyness is the amends process.

First we need to make a list of those whom we have wronged.

Then we need to make amends for our wrongs when it would not be harmful to do so.

It's important to remember that we make amends for ourselves.

We do not make amends to get forgiveness.

We do not make amends to make others like us.

We do not make amends to control or manipulate.

We make amends because we need to do so in order to maintain our clarity and our emotional sobriety.

We make amends because it clears our soul to admit our wrongs,

Say that we are sorry,

And turn them over to a power greater than ourselves.

Amends making is a way of vacuuming my soul.

The result is,

I feel clean.
