A gentle meditation reading Psalm 87 from Nan Merrill's Psalms for Praying. Before beginning, there is time to settle and come to stillness, then, as the Psalm is read three times, plenty of opportunities to welcome the words or phrases that stand out to you to be received deeply and offer their gift. This version of the Psalms is not a direct translation but is kind, gentle, and intimate.

Hello and welcome to this Lectio Divina on Psalm 87,

Recording on a particularly stormy day here in the UK.

So if you can hear the sounds of the wind,

Maybe the odd rattle of the gate in the wind,

Then please welcome those sounds as part of this recording.

I invite you to breathe,

To notice your breath,

To begin to settle into your space,

Into your body,

Gathering into this here and now moment.

Know that as you arrive you are met with love,

That the beloved awaits you here.

Come just as you are,

Nothing demanded or required,

Simply you in this moment.

Take some deep wide breaths,

And as you do you might want to let go of anything that can be let go of.

To notice how you arrive into this moment,

To receive love,

And to tend to yourself with kindness and gentleness.

I'm going to read the whole Psalm three times.

This first reading is simply to let the words come,

To let them fall over you like a gentle rain,

Without attaching to any in particular.

Psalm 87 Psalm 87 In the heavenly realm stands the city of light.

The beloved welcomes all who come to love.

Glories await you within the citadel,

Within the city of light.

Among those who enter are the humble and kind.

Those who reflect peace and radiate integrity.

Those who have faced darkness with love by their side.

Prepare yourselves for the city of light,

All of you who hear.

For the most high reigns there in glory.

Your name is written in the holy register when you face the recorder.

Who will blush with regret and who will join in the heavenly chorus.

Those who live by the spirit of love will know joy and harmony in the everlasting dance of the cosmos.

Psalm 87 On this second reading I invite you to notice any words or phrases that capture your attention.

In the heavenly realm stands the city of light.

Psalm 87 This third and final reading invites the words or phrases that captured your attention to offer their gift more deeply.

Notice how you're responding to them.

How are they making you feel in your body,

In your emotions?

Is there any way in which you want to respond or receive?

Are they connecting with a place of need within you at this time?

Be curious and open-hearted and receive the gift that these words bring.

In the heavenly realm stands the city of light.

The beloved welcomes all who come to love.

Glories await you within the citadel,

Within the city of light.

Among those who enter are the humble and kind.

Those who reflect peace and radiate integrity.

Those who have faced darkness with love by their side.

Prepare yourselves for the city of light.

All of you who hear,

For the most high reigns there in glory.

Your name is written in the holy register.

When you face the recorder,

Who will blush with regret and who will join in the heavenly chorus.

Those who live by the spirit of love will know joy and harmony in the everlasting dance of the cosmos.

As the hours and the days continue to unfold,

May your words and phrases continue to offer their gift.

Continue to settle within you and unfurl inside of your heart and your being.

May you be encouraged and know hope and goodness and the great love of the beloved accompanying you.

Go gently friends.

Amen.
