Dear friends,
You will have come across much discussion about artificial intelligence and systems which can answer questions and produce text,
Images and videos on demand.
As we all know,
Ever since the invention of photography,
It has been possible for those skilled in the art to manipulate photographs.
But it is now easier than ever for images to be altered and even for videos to be produced,
Which give the impression that some well-known person has said something or urged some action,
Which we know is completely out of character.
We have all seen productions like this.
They can appear light-hearted and they can cause amusement because we all know very well that these are fake images.
But this almost routine ability to manipulate and produce fake images,
The means to produce videos which give the impression that someone has said something out of character,
Has huge potential for harm.
In a world where technology like AI can be used to spread false news and impersonate others,
Forging a path of truth and love can seem challenging.
But there has never been a greater need for this effort on the part of all of us,
Because an inability to distinguish between truth and fake news can lead to misunderstanding and disputes.
It can even lead to war and to death.
So how on earth can we try to navigate this landscape?
How can we manage to find truth and uphold moral values?
In the first place,
We must recognise,
Value and encourage the power of critical thinking and fact-checking.
We need to approach all information with a critical eye,
Evaluate the source of incoming information,
Avoid jumping to conclusions and seek instead to question and question again.
We should check the facts and be suspicious of anything that seems dubious.
These steps will allow us to make informed decisions,
Hopefully based on the truth.
We can and we must all play our part in preventing the spread of information about which we are not absolutely certain.
Now,
It's impossible to imagine an interconnected world,
Such as the world we have,
Without the existence of social media.
But notice how social media can be manipulated.
Its algorithms allow us to be exposed repeatedly to information of the same sort.
Instead of encouraging meaningful discussion and the productive sharing of ideas,
The algorithms tend to place us in separate camps,
Where our pre-existing prejudices are reinforced time and time again.
In a world where fake news is rampant and where the ability to produce and circulate it is ever increasing,
We need to take care to see that the information we receive is coming from a reliable source.
Before ever commenting on a social media post or sharing an article,
We must pause and take a moment to reflect.
We need to consider the potential consequences of our actions.
Especially there is need to check sources and make sure that the information we are looking at is reputable and reliable.
And of course we have to ask ourselves,
Is it necessary to share this information at all?
We might usefully put the information through the three gates of mindful speech.
Is this true?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?
The practice of mindful speech tells us that unless something passes through these three gates with the answer yes each time,
We should not press that share button at all.
We have to be sceptical when it comes to information that we see on social media,
Especially sensational headlines and stories that seem too good or too bad to be true.
Better to look to reputable news outlets and fact-checking websites for information and analysis on important issues.
Faced with these algorithms which tend to reinforce our own views,
It is important,
Most important,
To open our minds to other points of view.
There's nothing to be gained by living in an echo chamber where we only hear what we want to hear.
It will be far more healthy if we follow a diverse range of voices and opinions,
Including voices that challenge our own beliefs and our own perspectives.
As we navigate these choppy waters we have to be mindful too of our own biases,
Recognizing that all of us have biases and perspectives that influence our thinking.
In all this,
Is there one word or one virtue that we can fall back on to ensure that we continue to forge a path based on truth?
There is.
That one word,
That one principle,
That one virtue is simple.
The word,
The principle,
The virtue.
Love.
Simply love.
In all situations we need to practice love.
We must cultivate a sense of empathy and compassion towards other people.
Love teaches us to be respectful,
To treat other people with respect and kindness,
Even if we disagree with their opinions or their perspectives.
Remember,
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Yes,
The fallout from artificial intelligence presents us with challenges.
Yes,
There is reason for concern.
Yes,
There is a need for a mindful response.
But we shouldn't despair.
While artificial intelligence can be used to impersonate people,
Its darker side cannot succeed.
It will not succeed,
Provided it's faced with a community of people determined to treat other people with love.
We need more than ever before to show love.
We must promote genuine connections and understanding wherever and however we can.
Love will enable us to build trust and construct a supportive sense of community,
Even in a world where technology can be used to deceive us.
Another way to forge a path of truth and love is to support organisations and initiatives that are committed to promoting accuracy and transparency in media and technology.
By supporting these efforts,
We can all work towards creating a culture where truth and love prevail over falsehood and manipulation.
This will not happen automatically.
The success of this effort depends on us.
It depends on each and every one of us.
Forging a path of truth and love in our time requires a commitment to personal responsibility and a rededication to ethical behaviour from all of us.
This commitment has the potential to bring out the best in each of us.
Remember the words from Christopher Frye?
Thank God our time is now,
When wrong comes up to face us everywhere,
Never to leave us till we take the longest stride of soul we ever took.
That was a quote from Sleep of Prisoners by Christopher Frye.
By not blandly accepting all we see and hear,
By standing up for truth,
By holding ourselves accountable for our own actions,
And working to create positive change in the world,
We can build a future that's grounded in love,
In honesty,
Compassion and integrity,
Despite all the smog of fake news that might surround us from time to time.
The future is in our hands just as it always has been and in this task we are not alone.
We are part of a worldwide community of people dedicated to working for truth and love and with truth and love on our side.
How can we fail?
Namaste.
