Hello,

This is Stephanie Hudson.

Welcome to my first of many romantic sleep stories,

Recorded just for you.

This sleep story will guide you into a night of calm and restful sleep,

Where you can relax using my voice to guide you.

Come with me and meet Rebecca who is walking through the quiet,

Peaceful streets.

We are in Scotland.

It is very cold here,

But Rebecca is snuggled up in a warm,

Fluffy coat with a thick fur collar.

As she walks,

She looks through the old windowpanes of the traditional shops.

She sees the candles flicker inside.

It makes her feel warm and cozy.

She feels at peace and is happy to be here on her own,

Drinking in the cool winter air,

Excited at the prospect ahead.

But before we begin,

Let's take a moment to find comfort and peace where we are now.

As you close your eyes,

Relax into the support beneath you.

Feel the warm covers protecting your body and know that you are safe.

Take a deep,

Full breath in through your nose and let it out on a long sigh.

It is time to relax and fully let go.

Sink deeper still as the soft pillow cradles your head.

It's Here and now there is time to care for yourself.

There's no rush,

No expectation,

Just the need to be kind to yourself as you listen to this calm sleep story.

And we're back with Rebecca.

She's walking towards the train station.

She's about to embark on a fresh voyage and she's excited to see what will happen.

She steps into the train and finds a comfortable window seat.

Her warm breath casts a foggy circle on the cold train window as she looks out to see people bustling here and there with their luggage,

Kissing their loved ones goodbye,

Or welcoming people back into their heart again.

It is quiet on the train and she can feel the warm seat beneath her and she settles in for the long journey ahead.

As the train embarks,

She looks out to the landscape of towering mountains and tall pine trees.

It is beautiful here,

But there is yet more excitement to come.

The clouds are dark and heavy above,

Hanging low so that each street lamp beams like a beacon of hope in the night.

There is snow on the way.

It is getting colder now,

But she is so comfortable in the warm train as it trundles along the long track.

Rebecca closes her eyes as the train dashes through the night.

The first flakes of soft,

Powdery snow begin to settle on the mountains beyond.

This is peace.

This is beauty.

Rebecca thinks back to how she lay in her bed and listened to her father outside,

Scraping the snow off his car and making a passage down the driveway.

She remembers the warm,

Cosy blankets that used to cover her childhood bed and the smell of hot chocolate and marshmallows roasting on the fire.

She remembers how she would crawl out of her bed with a blanket over her shoulders and look out of her window where the moon beamed down upon the snowy mountains in the distance.

How happy she was then.

She loved the snow.

It made the world soft and peaceful,

And brought hope and desire for what was to come.

The train trundled on and on in a steady,

Rhythmic lullaby,

Urging her to fall asleep.

She was travelling deeper and deeper into the depths of the Scottish countryside.

Then,

Gently breaking the silence,

The train door slid open,

Smooth on its runners.

She opened her eyes,

Just enough to see a strong hand pushing the door aside.

She was tired,

But this was something new.

Someone new.

And instantly,

She was awake again.

She looked away.

She didn't look up.

She could see by the frame of the man who had stepped into her carriage that he was strong.

That he was tall.

His skin was dark,

And his hands perfectly manicured.

He settled down to the chair opposite and looked out of the window as the train trundled on.

He was looking away.

She might just snatch a glance,

If she was careful.

Dare she?

She turned her head slightly,

And her long,

Auburn hair fell loose around her shoulders.

She brushed a wisp of her fringe back,

Self-consciously.

He was lost in his thoughts,

And she was grateful for that.

Yes,

She was right.

He was tall.

With a very strong frame.

With thick,

Heavy shoulders.

And dark hair.

His hands were large,

Resting softly upon his thighs.

Her eyelids dropped once more.

She didn't look.

It wasn't her place to look.

It must seem as though she didn't know he was there at all.

She took a deep breath in through her nose,

And as she sighed,

She turned back to the landscape rolling past her.

This was just another train ride.

And he was just another man.

Then,

Bustling through the door,

Came somebody new.

Anybody for tea?

The old lady said,

As she straightened her thick apron and tucked one of her curls behind her ear.

Rebecca was thirsty,

But she was shy and uncomfortable with speaking out.

Especially as it was just her and this strange man.

He would hear everything she said.

She looked down into her gloved hands.

She began to pull them off,

One finger at a time.

Her thickly painted nail varnish shone in the dim light of the carriage.

Perhaps I could just… she said to herself,

But then she looked away again.

He was looking.

It was all too much.

Cup of tea,

Dearie?

The old lady said again.

But Rebecca just shook her wavy hair.

She listened to the clink of the cup on its saucer.

She was aware the stranger was quenching his thirst,

And she wished she could do the same.

Then,

To her embarrassment,

The old lady said,

You look all done in,

Dearie.

Come on,

Have a cup of tea on me.

And reaching out to Rebecca,

A teacup clenched in her heavy hand.

The old lady smiled,

And Rebecca,

Embarrassed,

Looked down into the cup she had been handed.

Thank you so much,

She said as she looked away again.

You're welcome,

My dear,

Said the old lady.

And she trundled through the carriage,

Leaving Rebecca and the strange man behind.

Rebecca placed her lips to the cup.

It was warm and comforting,

And she sighed with relief.

She was on the journey to a new place.

Life had been hard,

Recently,

In the small town where she lived.

She loved it,

But it was so hard to find work.

So she had decided to take a trip,

An adventure to somewhere new,

With the promise of a new life.

The old town would still be very much in her heart,

But she must make the best of what she had.

As the train carried on along the track which cut a path through the frosty countryside,

The old lady returned and collected the cups.

Rebecca looked up,

And to her surprise,

She caught sight of the stranger's face.

It had been a long time since she had seen him,

And he had changed so much.

But she knew these eyes.

She had seen them before.

There was no mistaking the person who was at the centre of the community that she had just left behind.

She had thought that he had left for good.

And now here he was,

On the same train,

Going in the same direction.

She could hardly believe it.

Why had he returned?

And why was he leaving again?

It was Jake,

The boy she used to sledge down the local hills with,

When the snow lay thick and fast.

The boy she used to tease,

For his two front teeth took so long to come in.

The boy she always beat at rounders,

And laughed at for being a little slower than her.

But the man in front of her now was no longer a boy.

He had grown into something far beyond anything she could possibly have imagined he would be.

Where had he been all this time?

Did he recognise her?

No,

She still had the same auburn hair.

But her features had become softer,

Her eyes more sweet,

And her manner more gentle,

With the years she had spent looking after the local children and volunteering at the town church.

Surely he wouldn't remember her.

All the time she had teased him,

And laughed.

She had done it with good humour,

But he didn't know that.

And to her surprise one day,

He stopped talking to her completely.

That was many years ago.

She had long since forgotten about it.

But catching the expression on his face,

Brought her right back to the journey to and from school they would share.

Rebecca began to feel nervous.

She felt a warmth in her palms,

And tension in her chest.

Her heart was beating faster.

Why,

Then,

To her complete shock,

The handsome stranger,

Who was now no longer a stranger,

Spoke.

Rebecca?

What should she do?

He had recognised her.

Should she pretend she didn't know who he was?

He had,

After all,

Been the one to ignore her all those years ago.

Perhaps she should just close her eyes,

And it would all go away.

But something inside told her to turn and face what she had long since forgotten.

The boy she had teased so ruthlessly,

Who was now a tall,

Handsome man.

Her heart began to beat faster.

Her palms began to sweat.

She must do something.

Yes,

She said,

Looking up into his amber eyes.

You remember me,

Don't you?

Born from an American mother and a Scottish father,

He sounded not like anybody else she had ever known.

Yes,

It was him.

Only this time,

She looked at him through different eyes.

It's nice to see you,

She said delicately,

Not really knowing whether she should feel ashamed.

She had,

After all,

Laughed and mocked him for years.

They were but children,

Though.

Their eyes locked,

And suddenly,

There was nobody else in the world but them.

And they were back to all those years before,

When he had last looked at her.

Only these weren't eyes that were hurting.

The light danced in his eyes,

Catching a sense of good humour.

He was no longer angry with her.

He seemed to find the whole thing very amusing.

Now,

He was in the driving seat,

And she was the one feeling embarrassed.

I do remember you.

There was nothing more she could think of to say.

She looked back into her palms.

Why am I being such a fool?

She said to herself,

But she was overcome.

An embarrassment for what she had said when they were children.

It's good to see you,

He said to Rebecca,

And she couldn't help herself as excitement rushed into her chest.

You too,

She said.

Where could they go from here?

She was speechless.

She had nothing to say.

No words would come out.

What was she to do?

She was going to make a fool of herself,

And all would be lost.

All these years,

There was something missing,

And she did not quite know what.

But now it was here again.

The missing piece of the puzzle.

Say something,

She said to herself.

Anything.

Where are you going?

Nothing.

It was a stupid question.

The train was only travelling one way,

And there was only one stop at the end of the journey.

They were travelling together to the same place.

And to her utter embarrassment,

He let out a heavy laugh.

How the tables are turned,

He said.

This situation was ridiculous.

Why was she making such a fool of herself?

And why was he revelling in her discomfort?

Of course,

She said,

Straightening up her back.

She must pull herself together.

What was I thinking?

I'm sorry,

I'm a little tired.

She glanced at him once more,

And his warm eyes were smiling.

He was thinking only kind thoughts,

As,

She was ashamed to admit,

He always did.

It was her who had been cruel.

It was her who had teased him,

And now he was teasing her back.

She felt ashamed.

Ashamed of the person she was.

And embarrassed that he didn't know the person she had become.

He had left with his family all those years ago.

So why had he come back?

The silence was awkward.

But she could say nothing.

So she looked out of the window,

And watched the countryside roll by.

And he did the same.

With long auburn hair and dark grey eyes,

Rebecca Tregoren was considered in her town to be quite something to look at.

Not that that mattered to her.

She was more interested in helping out at the local church,

Or looking after the young children at Sunday school.

When we first met her,

She had boarded a train from her small hometown in order to find work.

And she was travelling through the Scottish countryside,

Overlooked by a broad mountain range and a canopy of dark cloud waiting to shed their snowy load upon the long track,

Cutting through the moorland ahead.

Rebecca was a shy girl.

Although it hadn't always been that way.

The handsome man sitting across from her could testify to that.

She had teased him ruthlessly when they were children.

Then,

Years later,

When she was old enough to know better,

He left town with his family before she had a chance to say she was sorry.

It had been about an hour since they had last spoken.

He had laughed at her and seemed to enjoy her discomfort in seeing him again.

So she decided to stay silent rather than make an even bigger fool of herself.

The snow fell hard and all at once a telling shriek came from the track below and Rebecca sighed with relief.

Within minutes she would be able to leave and she would never have to be humiliated like that again.

I'll take that from you dearie,

Said a sweet voice from down the carriage and Rebecca sat up straight,

Cup and saucer in hand.

The train jolted to a halt and Rebecca stood up reluctantly.

The last thing she wanted to do was face Jake Fairmore the once toothless youth who had grown into a tall,

Dark,

Handsome mountain of a man sitting across from her in the carriage.

But,

To Rebecca's great surprise Jake left without so much as a goodbye having draped his long wool coat over his broad shoulders as he ventured out into the snow.

She watched him walk away through a soft flurry that dazzled in the light of the station lamps.

It was bitter outside and she knew she must prepare for what was to come.

The next day dawned cold and bright.

The piercing sunlight woke Rebecca from her restless slumber.

The room she stayed in was nice enough.

She'd been lucky to secure a place in the town hall at such short notice so she should be grateful for that.

But this wasn't home.

This was a new place and she was finding it hard to come to terms with walking away from all that she loved.

She looked out over the snow-capped skyline and felt a pang of regret.

Why didn't she just say sorry the night before and be done with it?

Jake deserved that,

Didn't he?

She'd been the one in the wrong after all and he was owed a little revenge.

When all was said and done taking a laugh at her expense was much kinder than what she'd done to him all those years ago.

It was only after her father died that Rebecca realised how much she had taken for granted in life.

She had been arrogant and stubborn and had refused to acknowledge the feelings of others.

But suffering such a huge loss made her rethink the person she was and the person she wanted to be.

Hadn't she promised her mother she would turn over a new leaf?

Heaven knows she'd spent the last five years trying to make up for the spoiled young girl she was.

But she still hadn't managed to do the right thing on the train and say sorry to the young man she'd hurt all those years ago.

What kind of a person did that?

No,

She must stop thinking like this.

She had an interview to get to and time was running out.

It was now a quarter to ten and the waiting room Rebecca found herself in was luxurious to say the least.

This office block was more prestigious than anything she'd ever seen in her hometown.

With leather clad sofas and highly polished table tops this place was beyond anything she would have expected from a business that prided itself on its charity work.

Rebecca straightened her skirt in a vain attempt to look as if she hadn't weathered a snow blizzard just to get there.

But she had and it showed.

She was late.

Unlike the other girls lined up perfectly in their best suits with their best makeup intact Rebecca was a walking disaster and the receptionist appeared to find it very amusing.

Rebecca Tregoren she called with a supercilious look on her face This way please.

She led the startled and somewhat ill prepared Rebecca into a bright and airy room overlooking the snow covered town square and as the heavy wooden doors clicked shut behind her Rebecca sighed.

She could have kicked herself.

This room overlooked everything she wanted to forget.

Whoever worked in this office would have seen the fool she'd just made of herself when she tripped up the steps and landed in a heap in the freshly fallen snow.

Perhaps she was not cut out for this new life but she had no choice her mother was getting older and she must provide for her come what may so she sat down frantically tugging at her bedraggled hair and tried to straighten herself up and make herself presentable for the interview ahead.

Then to her horror from behind a distant door came the last voice she expected to hear This won't take long it said.

Rebecca froze surely this couldn't be happening it was some kind of a joke that was the voice of Jake Fairmore and it sounded like he had written her off already Rebecca panicked and got up to leave she must escape before he saw the mess that she had become but to her dismay there was a huge wet patch where she'd been sitting Rebecca was mortified how could she possibly maintain the upper hand when her skirt was soaked and dark streaks of mascara ran down her face well well we meet again and all at once he was there standing behind the desk and looking at the bedraggled creature in front of him Rebecca froze her hand gripped tight to the chrome doorknob she had her back to him and he could see the wet patch seeping across the back of her skirt going somewhere Rebecca sighed it would be so easy she could just turn the handle and never have to see him again but she was a proud person and she'd promised her father on his deathbed she would try and be the best version of herself come what may she turned reluctantly determination seeping through the black smudges on her face okay,

Have your laugh Jake,

You've earned it but to her surprise Jake Fairmore didn't laugh at all suddenly a fierce defiance shot into her chest the same defiance she had been known for as a child her mother said her red hair had a lot to answer for and she was right who did Jake think he was anyway?

Why didn't he just laugh like any normal self-respecting person heaven knows she deserved it sit down his voice was low and serious he meaned business Rebecca's expression dropped you are here for an interview aren't you?

Said Jake then sit down so Rebecca did as she was told for what else could she do in the circumstances do you have a copy of your CV?

He demanded and Rebecca reached into her bag without thinking this was surreal it was as if they had never met usually that would be a blessing in this situation and yet somewhere deep inside her she needed him to acknowledge who she was and what she had once meant to him Jake studied the papers for some time his face expressionless and try as she might Rebecca just couldn't read what he was thinking she looked back down into her hands they were shaking this was ridiculous she must get a grip of herself and all at once when she was reaching the point where she could bear it no more Jake Fairmore placed her CV on his desk stood up pushing his chair aside and said yes,

I've seen enough come back tomorrow Rebecca but this time don't be late it is a new day and she is sitting in the reception area of Scott Lake Industries waiting for instructions as to where to begin her new role Rebecca was undecided about whether to return after having seen Jake and realising that he was indeed the driving force behind the company she had just applied to work in she had tossed and turned the night before unsure whether she could remain in such a town where the last person she wanted to see was in fact the one person she would be working alongside for the foreseeable future Jake Fairmore was everything she wanted to get away from her painful past the embarrassment she had suffered in seeing him once more and the realisation that she had no other option than to face him again and humble herself in order to provide for the mother she loved there was nobody else in sight and no sound to be heard but the soft tick tick of the clock on the wall then suddenly she heard voices from behind the door that she had stepped through only the day before this was Jake Fairmore's office the one place she had no intention of returning to she could just make out movement beyond what was to be in store for her that day whatever happened she would hold her head high and continue as if nothing had been said and no knowledge of the past was shared between them this was work after all and business and pleasure never mixed it was now ten minutes beyond the time she thought she would begin what exactly was happening behind those doors all she wanted to do was start her job with any luck get hidden in an office somewhere without embarrassment or discomfort against her inner fear she had returned and she was determined to make a go of this despite her many doubts and there was the voice again it was a hard shrill voice there was nothing soft about the receptionist then all at once the door swung open and out she floated in her sharply cut suit her hair pulled back to within an inch of its life oh there you are the receptionist said this way please and to Rebecca's relief the door shut behind her good there would be no seeing Jake Fairmore today the receptionist led her into the cold staircase at the edge of the building down down down they travelled until it felt like they could go down no more past the busy offices past the smiling faces past the windows to the world outside down into what seemed like the bowels of the building and just when she felt they could go down no more the receptionist tugged at an old door handle and led her in to a dark and dank room with files piled up to the ceiling and old books stacked in the corners it's a filing job for you today this should take you a while she said in her hard voice Rebecca looked around there was no source of daylight she could see this place was far removed from the rolling hills and the countryside she would see through her bedroom window every morning it felt like nothing more than a cold cellar the only saving grace was it was large and long with row upon row of shelves and stacks upon stacks of files leading to a little table and chair right at the bottom upon which sat somebody else this person looked about the same age as her hello the young lady called it's nice to have somebody here with me this cheered up Rebecca considerably and leaving the receptionist behind her she walked towards the brightly lit area where the young lady was knee deep in a pile of old books this job's going to take forever she said to Rebecca I'm glad I've got somebody here with me Rebecca turned to check the receptionist had left at least we won't have that old dragon watching us she said with a smile I'm Sam the young lady said nice to meet you I'm Rebecca said Rebecca it's a bit dark in here isn't it well yeah but you get used to it after a while and we'll go out at lunch time we'll be fine seeing such a friendly face cheered Rebecca up considerably perhaps this wouldn't be such a bad job after all now it's quite simple Sam began again these books are all going to be sold it's our job to mark them up,

Catalogue them and label them they're quite valuable you know but where did they all come from said Rebecca well when they refurbished the old library this was what was left behind but rather than get rid of them all the boss said that we should keep them and try and sell them so that the proceeds can go to charity the boss said Rebecca yes he's the father of the receptionist that's what makes her all the more annoying I had no idea said Rebecca she was now beginning to see things were a little more complicated than she first thought take a seat and I'll tell you all about it and Sam handed Rebecca a pile of books and they sat together for the rest of the morning chatting and filing filing and chatting this was to be a lasting friendship and Rebecca was pleased she had felt very lonely in this new town but now she would have someone to share it with and so gradually her routine began every morning she would wake up early in the boarding house at the back of the town hall she would look out to the mountains and be thankful that she could offer stability to her mother back at home at work Rebecca and Sam were left to their own devices and they ploughed on with a huge task quite happily together at lunchtime they would go outside and walk through the town square Rebecca said nothing of Jake or the history they shared but she was happy to listen to the many stories Sam told her one day Sam said something very shocking and Rebecca found it hard to accept what she was hearing apparently many years ago when Jake was young he had found out he was adopted Rebecca of course had no knowledge of this he had kept it to himself and now she felt even more guilty than she had felt before as if it couldn't get any worse she was pleased she hadn't come across him since she had started the job but she now felt it would be deceitful not to tell Sam of the history they had shared I had no idea she said but why would you?

Said Sam you didn't know him when he was a child did you?

She watched Rebecca's face drop and realised there was more to this girl than met the eye yes said Rebecca and I had no idea what he was going through there's a bit more to it than that though isn't there?

Said Sam a wry smile on her face well I used to tease him a bit and I feel sorry about that now especially after what you've just told me oh we all do stupid things when we're kids said Sam don't worry about it,

He'll have forgotten all about it I'm sure Rebecca busied herself with the next pile of books he's not forgotten anything she said to herself not one thing at all I wouldn't be surprised if that's why I'm stuck in this cellar all day long but before she had time to think about it anymore the little phone on the wooden desk began to ring oh get that would you?

Said Sam as she pushed her glasses higher up her nose I've got a feeling that's the old bag I don't want to talk to her Rebecca smiled and picked up the phone hello she said you're wanted in Mr Fairmole's office immediately the sharp voice said down the line Rebecca looked at Sam and pretended to stick her fingers down her throat Sam stifled a chuckle but the receptionist heard it at the other end of the line something funny no not at all said Rebecca I'll be up shortly here we go she said as she turned to face Sam and off she went to climb the many flights of stairs up back to the bright reception area and back to the lion's den you took your time said the receptionist as she entered Rebecca didn't know why Olivia Cartwright hated her so much but she had a feeling she was about to find out Mr Fairmole's waiting in you go Rebecca sighed it had been a while since she had seen him and she was far from relishing the prospect she walked slowly towards the double doors knocked three times then when the voice from within said come she clicked the door shut behind her and there he was with his back to the windows that ran floor to ceiling his shiny inkwell reflected in the rays cutting through sit he said without even looking up something of old rose up in Rebecca and she stood defiant her hands on the chair in front of her she couldn't possibly think of what it was she had done for him to be so rude but if he wanted a fight he was going to get one it was but a minute before he looked up but it seemed like an hour all the while Rebecca scanned the room for any clues as to what might have happened she had worked well with Sam in the basement they had filed a good many papers and organised thousands of books so what was the problem then realising Rebecca was not going to do as she was told Jake looked up he was dressed in a fine grey suit his white shirt pristine his thick grey tie perfectly matched but there was a lack of humour in his eyes is there something wrong it was all Rebecca could do to bite her tongue how dare he tell her to sit as though she was some kind of a street dog Rebecca held his stare and refused to look away this question needed no answer she would sit when she was ready I see,

He said,

It's going to be like that is it it would seem not much has changed Rebecca Tregoro Rebecca could have screamed why did she allow herself to be put in this position well if you hadn't spoken to me in that way she began but Jake was not in the mood to be challenged hmm I should have known better it was only because your mother was so kind to me I felt obliged to consider giving you the position in the first place this was too much Rebecca's cheeks began to redden and her hair stood on end how dare he she didn't need his charity she would just leave she turned to go and then realised just how much she was beholden to this man and this job going somewhere Jake said and it took all Rebecca had to say nothing in return she walked over to the chair and sat down she must make him think that he had the upper hand but she would find an alternative to this life if it was the last thing she did and then he would watch her walk away again just like she had done when he tried to kiss her when they were children she was not finished with him yet Olivia show me the books you've been working on Jake continued and it appears you are incapable of the job you are employed to do Rebecca was shocked this was unfair whatever Jake may or may not be he was an honest person so far as she knew why was he saying this Sam and herself had worked their fingers to the bone to make sure everything was in its place and if she were honest with herself after hearing of Jake's past Rebecca had given much more energy to the task as if somehow she could make up for what had been I don't know what you mean she said she must refuse to go down without a fight well this is a great example Rebecca said Jake and picking up one of the books he had looked at the night before he opened it in front of her and sure enough a huge blue ink stain ran all across the middle pages well that's nothing to do with me said Rebecca shocked at how he could think she had done such a thing we know how important it is they're all intact ready for sale I don't think you do said Jake meeting her eyes once more this is a business Rebecca we are here to make money and in the case of these books the money we make is for a very good cause one that's in dire need of financial help Rebecca fancied she saw a glimpse of pain in his eyes but no this was too ridiculous that wasn't pain it was anger and he was angry at her well she considered he's not going to take his anger out on me she stood up stepped towards the desk and spread her long fingers wide as she placed them before him whatever I may or may not have been Jake Fairmore I am neither careless nor foolhardy and dropped that ink on those books I did not perhaps you would do well to ask Olivia exactly where the ink came from at this Jake stood up abruptly it was so annoying now she would have to look up at him for he was so much taller than she but Rebecca was stubborn and she refused to meet his gaze and why would Mr Cartwright's daughter want to do such a thing how on earth would that benefit her he spat she's had it in for me from the start I don't know what her problem is but it certainly begins and ends with me the words sounded ridiculous when they came out of Rebecca's mouth but she said them anyway for she believed them to be the truth at this Jake laughed believe it or not Rebecca Tregoran he said as he leant in towards her the whole world does not revolve around you Olivia Cartwright has very little time on her hands with her business commitments and I would prefer it if in future you took more care rather than throwing accusations at other members of staff especially the boss's daughter Rebecca wanted the ground to open up and swallow her whole here she was in a lowly position in a company she didn't want to be in with the last person on earth she wanted to be working for and a jealous spiteful witch of a girl who wanted nothing but her demise Rebecca was certain Olivia had hated her from the first and if she stayed here much longer it was only going to get worse she took a deep breath in and gazed out through the windows behind him she must consider her options yes she loved working with Sam and yes she was obliged to her mother but she'd have to get out of here somehow this was just unbearable I'll leave it till the end of the month she said to herself at least then I'll have a month's money to give to mother and as she breathed out the redness seeped away from her cheeks her heart slowed and she considered herself in the short term to be beaten I understand she said in a softer voice and as he sat back down to his work she walked away determined to get her revenge on Olivia Cartwright the first opportunity she got Rebecca Tregoren had begun to realise just how complicated her life had become when working for Jake Fairmore the man she did her best to avoid since coming across him one cold and frosty night on the steam train running from her old hometown to a new and prosperous one nestled deep in the Scottish Highlands to look at Jake was the kind of man she would usually be drawn to with strong broad shoulders a thick muscular neck and warm skin that lit up his bright eyes he was unlike any other man she had ever known and he was successful too which was part of the problem because now Rebecca was beholden to him and Jake Fairmore had more than one agenda in his workplace not only did he trust the word of Olivia Cartwright that receptionist who was doing her best to undermine Rebecca at every turn he also displayed blind loyalty to Scott Lake Industries a company Rebecca would come to understand was not all it seemed she is back at Scott Lake Industries after a disappointing day before and she has decided to address any problems with a smile she had been wrongly accused by none other than Jake for something she didn't do but she had decided to put a brave face on it and show the world her genuine smile it was her best feature her mother said a smile that danced in her light grey eyes for Rebecca Dregoran was nothing if not resilient she entered the vast lobby through the glazed double doors and made her way past reception to the staircase that ran from the top of the building down to the basement where she had spent every day since she joined in a dark room with her friend and colleague Sam she couldn't wait to tell her all about what she had been accused of she was certain Sam would be more than happy to help her plan her revenge on Olivia for setting her up and turning Jake against her Sam was always good for a laugh a jolly soul who gave Rebecca a reason to get up in the morning Sam was always full of energy and happy to play along with some of the crazy ideas Rebecca came up with descending the steps Rebecca thought about what lay ahead it was to be a busy day Scotts Lake Industries was to have its annual charity drive and there was a haul of antique books that needed to be carried up the many flights of stairs and out to the trucks parked in front of the building Rebecca sighed she knew it would be hard work but she was happy to do her best for she was too proud to ask for the key to the lift and she was certainly not going to be beaten she was certainly not going to give Olivia Cartwright the satisfaction then once the books were collected in the trucks they would be driven to the Cartwright residence the home of Olivia's father the CEO of Scotts Lake Industries well known as the premier home in Fort Scott Lake Cartwright Manor boasted many maids,

Gardeners and various ground staff that worked night and day to keep it as dazzling a spectacle as everybody said it was with sculpted shrubs lining the long gravel drive that wound its way through the sprawling lawns and intricate pathways Cartwright Manor sat far back from the road behind two imposing wrought iron gates this was where the charity drive would be held in the marquee on the lawn not that Rebecca was invited no,

Such an event was only for the most prestigious in the company she tugged at the handle to the basement door she had arrived at last and was eager to get on with her job the busier she was that day the faster the day would pass and the sooner the weekend would be with her but when she stepped over the threshold Rebecca saw to her dismay there was no Samantha to share her day with where on earth is she?

Rebecca said to herself perhaps she's ill I hope not and as if well aware of every one of her movements all at once the shrill ring of the basement phone set her on edge it was Olivia Cartwright and she was calling to gloat we don't have much time today her cold voice said I want all remaining books in the foyer by noon ready for collection and before Rebecca could ask what had happened to Sam the line went dead it took Rebecca all morning to get the books up to the foyer and by lunchtime she had had enough the last batch remained in the basement but that could wait once that was done she would go home early regardless of what Olivia Cartwright said she stepped outside the building into the bright sunshine and made a call she needed to find out exactly what had happened to Sam and after just two rings she was delighted when her friend picked up Sam it's so good to hear your voice are you ok?

There was an unexpected silence before Sam replied and Rebecca was surprised when she did at last speak I was told to leave last night it was completely out of the blue almost as soon as you left Olivia gave me my marching orders what?

How can she?

You've done nothing wrong she's got no right to sack you is there no end to what that woman will do?

What do you mean?

Said Sam well as you know I was called upstairs and I was accused of dropping ink all over the prize batch but there's no ink in the basement Sam protested Rebecca paused to think then she said I'm not staying here without you I can't Sam,

As much as I need this job it's all become too much that Olivia's got it in for me and now this you were the only reason I could stand this job in the first place I don't want to be here without you and especially not with Jake and Olivia breathing down my neck oh Jake is it?

Samantha laughed on first name terms again are we?

Very funny said Rebecca the man's an idiot he must be to take the word of Olivia cart right over me well as from tomorrow you won't be in the basement anymore the books will all be sold said Sam and you'll be sent up to one of the offices and back into the land of the living if only said Rebecca but what are you going to do Sam?

Oh don't worry about me said Sam I've got an interview tomorrow,

This is fate I tell you I've been wanting to get out for ages anyway that's amazing Sam,

Rebecca replied well good luck I don't think you'll have any problems though and if you get the job put in a good word for me you bet said Sam if I stay here much longer I'm going to end up doing something stupid I've had just as much of Olivia as I can take and Jake's clearly under her spell anyway I must go it looks like things are happening in the foyer and that old battle axe is watching everything I do you make me laugh said Sam well good luck with today and I'll speak to you tomorrow after the interview thanks said Rebecca it looks like everybody's getting ready for the event I'll be glad to get out of it and have a weekend to myself it's ridiculous you're not invited said Sam,

I wouldn't want to go even if I was the last thing I need is to see Olivia Cartwright swanning around and looking fabulous in her diamonds and pearls fabulous?

Laughed Sam she's got nothing on you you put every girl in that building to shame Rebecca and you're not even trying but why do you care anyway?

Rebecca thought about it,

She wasn't sure if it was her pride or because she was stubborn but fury rose up in her chest at the thought of Olivia fawning over Jake in front of everyone and everything and him lapping it up like a puppy I don't care she declared,

In fact I couldn't care less and at that they said their goodbyes and Rebecca returned to collect the last batch of books before she went home it was almost time to leave she had made it up the long staircase this was the last time she would have to make that journey her arms were tired but she'd done a great job now all that was left was to get through reception in one piece drop the books in the lobby for collection and go back down to lock up everybody would be far too busy to notice her leave early she leaned against the door but to her dismay,

When she turned round and faced the reception area,

There was Jake Fairmore dressed in his dinner suit and standing next to him,

Olivia Cartwright looking as glamorous as it is possible for a woman to be they stood together with an elderly gentleman who Rebecca assumed was Olivia's father all around staff were fussing and running backwards and forwards in preparation for what lay ahead old man Cartwright looked as thick as thieves with his daughter and Jake looked on smiling until he caught sight of Rebecca then his face dropped this is just marvellous Rebecca said to herself,

As if things couldn't get any worse why does he have to stare like that she rolled her shoulders back and lifted her head high,

Refusing to be beaten each step she took was made with precision all she had to do was make it to the edge of the foyer in one piece,

And then she could escape and never have to be humiliated like this again Jake,

Are you listening?

A voice from behind her said I'm still capable of turning his head she said to herself with a wry smile but no sooner had she felt she had the other hand than the ground slipped away from beneath her and the shiny polished sole of her smartest stilettos slipped on the marble floor and she fell unceremoniously down upon her knees,

Surrounded by the books she was supposed to be taking such good care of Rebecca's head hung low her long auburn hair covering her embarrassment it was as if time had stood still and everything had become silent a sharp stabbing ran from her knee up her thigh and she did her best not to shout out she must get up quickly the last thing she wanted was to make a fool of herself in front of Olivia Cartwright and her father just leave her to it,

She heard Olivia say but this time,

Jake refused to do as he was told he had been brought up to be a gentleman and no gentleman watched a lady fall and did nothing then all at once,

He was next to her there was no need for Rebecca to open her eyes his strong heady scent embraced her and she could feel his masculine energy permeating through the air to fill her senses not now,

She said to herself but it was to be now in front of everyone his large hand cupped her pale elbow and he spoke gently into her hair are you ok?

Rebecca hadn't expected to feel like this suddenly she was weak and she was helpless and the hand of Jake Fairmore was the only hand she was willing to accept I'm fine,

Sorry about the books I'll pick them up,

I don't think there's any damage forget about the books in spite of everything Olivia Cartwright and her father expected him to be he was still a man and Rebecca was still his woman he looked at the heap she had become and he felt remorse for what he had said the night before can you get up?

He placed his palm onto Rebecca's waist and excitement rushed from deep in her belly into her chest not now but it was too late they had joined forces once more then as quickly as the yearning passed over her it left again and she came to her senses get back to them please I'm fine,

I can get up on my own but Jake was not convinced don't be silly Jake,

It's time to leave Olivia's harsh voice sliced through the moment but Jake refused to be discouraged I can't leave you here you know I can't,

Rebecca his strong arms lifted her up to standing and with one look from their boss a chair was brought and Rebecca was able to sit down she looked up gingerly and he stared straight back at her then all at once they were back by the side of the river speaking of their dreams of what they were to be when they grew up this was the boy she had laughed at for being so devoted to her and this was the boy she had teased until finally he went away never to return a sharp pain brought tears to her eyes and she said,

I'm sorry for teasing you all those years ago she could see in his face an apology was no longer necessary but there was something new in his eyes a recognition of shared affection and a deep longing for something more that's okay he smiled I always told you I'd be taller than you,

Didn't I?

It looks like more than one thing I predicted came to pass and what does that mean?

Rebecca smiled now that would be telling,

Said Jake and as the first aider rushed in with his bandages Jake stepped back gave Rebecca a secret wink and turned to face the music almost a month has passed since we last saw Rebecca Trecoran and life at Scott Lake Industries has improved immeasurably she is now established in a busy office on the second floor where she has many friendly colleagues and is working hard every day since her encounter with Jake Fairmore before the annual charity drive Rebecca has developed a renewed sense of hope for the future she's bought new clothes taken the time to exercise and even got to know her neighbours a nurse and a little boy to whom she teaches piano the same cannot be said for Jake Fairmore,

However and here we are back in the town of Scott Lake deep in the Scottish Highlands where spring is in the air in the town square the crocuses have burst through the softened soil and the warm sunshine has brought with it the taste of something new upon the hillsides the heather blooms plump and pink and by the roadside the streams run clear winter is now a distant memory and with it the dark days Rebecca spent with Sam in the basement of Scott Lake Towers she is now happily established in her new job and so is Rebecca they are both well aware of just how spiteful Olivia Cartwright has been and this has brought them even closer together whenever they meet each week for lunch they happily share inside information about their respective companies and any local gossip they can as it happens the company Sam now works for is in much the same business as Scott Lake Industries it manufactures and imports tourist products and in Scott Lake town the companies are well known to be old rivals it's so lovely to see the sun again Rebecca gushed one morning as she left the lift being on the second floor certainly had its benefits not least of all being at the front of the building and able to see everything that came and went cup of tea anyone?

Her colleagues beamed Rebecca was always so generous with her time when it came to others but they never took advantage it was just nice to have a happy face around the place for a change Olivia had been a grim taskmaster but since Rebecca joined their team the daughter of the CEO had been conspicuous by her absence obviously since the charity drive she had bigger fish to fry Rebecca meanwhile was just grateful Olivia was no longer on her back although whenever she did come across her her rival looked unusually smug did she know something she wasn't telling I think you must have brought the sun in with you said one colleague as they admired Rebecca's new spring dress but gazing out of the office window Rebecca had her doubts perhaps it wasn't to be as nice a day as she had planned ever since Jake Fairmore had picked her up from the cold foyer floor all those weeks ago she had heard little from him and at that moment she would have done anything to see him but shortly after the charity drive he'd been called away on business and was only due to return that day Rebecca handed out the tea and settled down to her desk and the huge pile of invoices that had materialised overnight Olivia Cartwright may well have been physically absent but she had certainly not loosened her grip as far as workload went Rebecca always had the biggest pile she switched on her monitor and waiting for everything to load she checked her latest text lunch today it was Sam oh my goodness,

Rebecca said to herself it's Friday already you bet,

She replied then she placed her phone back in her bag and smiled to herself this was something to look forward to outside the morning sunshine danced along the mountain tops and picked its way down the craggy terrain to the town square in front of the building she followed the line in anticipation surely Jake would be back soon and there he was in the town square the one person she had been waiting to see the one person she had told herself was just entertaining the idea of her to keep himself amused that same someone who was driven by the idea of success and whom,

She wondered,

Probably had very little time for her at the moment ever since she had fallen down on the day of the charity drive,

He had been mysteriously absent,

Leaving her with nothing more than one line which read,

Hope you feel better bedhead the reference to her messy childhood hair had made her laugh but that was before he had disappeared for over a month and now here he was,

Bold as brass in his three-piece suit,

Standing at the entrance to Scott Lake Towers,

Preparing himself for what was to come Rebecca watched closely as he thanked the driver and straightened himself up he looked so handsome in his soft wool coat and tanned brogues and his skin was darker than usual she could see he had caught the sun folks said it was hot this time of year in India but looking more closely Rebecca fancied there was a weariness in his eyes this had been no holiday then all of a sudden,

There was Olivia Cartwright,

She was all over him like a rash,

And it didn't seem like she was letting go any time soon just what was going on between them anyway?

Rebecca had been so sure of her feelings for him the last time she had seen him but now she couldn't help but feel jealous there had been no mistaking the spark between them all those weeks ago but his long absence and the lack of communication had done little for her self-esteem it had been so long since she had heard from him but she was of course relying on the Jake of today to be the same person as the Jake of her childhood and she knew that might well no longer be the case true,

He had been living in a completely different time zone but why had she received no more than one message no texts,

No emails,

Nothing they'd never been short of things to say to one another before perhaps things had changed now he was so successful little did she know Jake had been making steps to release himself from the hold Scott Lake Industries had over him headhunted by them a year before he had been pleased at the opportunity to return to his home turf he'd missed the Scottish Highlands and the wonderful memories he had made whilst living there since losing both adoptive parents he had struggled with a sense of identity but the Highlands had welcomed him back with open arms and he had felt whole once more especially since seeing Rebecca try as he might,

He had never forgotten her and he had been only too pleased to honour her mother's wishes and get her a job not that having Rebecca at Scott Lake Industries was easy,

No it was more than distracting but Rebecca Tregoren was someone he would prefer to have close to him rather than far away no matter how difficult things got and things were difficult now Olivia Cartwright had set her sights on him and everyone knew what Olivia Cartwright wanted Olivia Cartwright got if it wasn't for such a prominent position and the prospect of shares in a multi-million pound company he would leave right away and take Rebecca with him but it wasn't to be ever since the kiss he had been cornered into on charity night,

Which would soon be plastered all over the front page of the monthly Scott Lake Chronicle if old man Cartwright had his way Olivia had not left him alone and what with her father micromanaging everything Jake did,

He was finding life at Scott Lake Industries was becoming very complicated it wasn't as if he could just leave either he had sacrificed everything for this job and now the hope of reconciling with Rebecca once she saw the monthly magazine was promising to be yet another sacrifice he would have to make so much pressure had been put upon him by old man Cartwright to make an overt display of affection towards his daughter it had seemed there was no way out nothing would suit her father more than seeing his daughter settled with such a well-presented well-educated man and in a way he was flattered old man Cartwright respected him and had told him he had a backbone unlike the other fools that had chanced their arm with his daughter Jake was sure if old man Cartwright had his way he would become part of the Cartwright empire by marrying his daughter,

Anything so he could rest easy in his twilight years Jake wondered how it was he could have ended up in such a difficult situation so quickly he had hoped returning to the Highlands would help him reconnect with his roots and give him a home once more when that first day he accepted the position at Scott Lake Industries he felt fate wrap its arms around him and give him renewed hope for the future but that was before he met Olivia Cartwright being successful at work was one thing,

But building a stable home was something else it was not something he could do easily especially if its foundations were built on shifting sand to add to this was the relentless need to understand where he came from looking back,

Rebecca's mother had probably known all along he was adopted,

But she was forbidden to say anything she had always been someone he could talk to and when he first returned she had held him close and told him she was sorry for his loss and he had felt the better of it but made her promise not to tell Rebecca it had been wonderful seeing her again on the train that cold wintry night and he couldn't help but entertain ideas of his future even though they hadn't seen each other for over 15 years but now,

Spending time in India he had learned of something that would change his whole life something he could not run away from and that was part of the problem running away had always been so easy for Jake but now he had to stay and face the music he couldn't pretend this away and he could not pretend Rebecca away either the morning dragged on with the grace of a petulant child Jake forever in Rebecca's mind each invoice brought more queries than the last and she decided she would have been better off at home she checked the office clock and was delighted to see the hands pointing skyward at last!

Now she could get out for some fresh air and straight talking but as she made her way to the lift she came across two of her colleagues gossiping did you hear about him at the charity drive?

One said yeah,

He's got his feet well and truly under that table said the other it'll be all over the front page this Friday okay,

He didn't waste his time,

Did he?

Rebecca pressed the button to the lift and felt her heart sink maybe that was why Jake went away perhaps he was shamefaced she hadn't pegged him for someone who would do anything to climb the corporate ladder but then what did she know?

They had spent the last 15 years living different lives and she entered the lift a little less optimistically than she had left it earlier that morning Scott Lake Brasserie was well known for its soft music and lighting just what Rebecca needed to soothe the nagging in the back of her skull it was no more than five minutes before Sam sailed in,

Looking more colourful than ever with her bohemian handbag and matching braids hey,

She beamed,

How's things?

Not as good as yours it seems said Rebecca,

Impressed with the vision before her what's up?

You look like you've seen a ghost Rebecca sighed don't laugh,

But I think I've heard something about Jake and I'm not sure what to make of it Sam sat back and ordered a coffee she must make herself comfortable any conversation about Jake Fairmore promised to be a long one she had always had a very cut and dry approach to him but looking at the expression on Rebecca's face she decided today might be a good day to bite her tongue well you know he's been missing for a month,

Rebecca started and you know how I've had little more than a memory to tide me over yes,

Said Sam,

Patiently well,

Now I've no idea what to do I've just overheard some gossip apparently there's going to be something on the front page of the monthly magazine Rebecca picked the pattern in her coffee froth to pieces and Sam watched as the wisps of her soft fringe dangled in her eyes it doesn't sound good,

Said Sam and he's back,

Is he?

Well,

I'd give him a wide berth if I were you over a month,

And one message it's just not good enough,

Rebecca it all sounds a bit suspect I'm sure he didn't get to where he got by playing the nice guy then as soon as the words left her mouth Sam regretted them Rebecca's expression had turned as pale as her latte she was one of those people who oozed resilience and yet,

The more she got to know her the more she understood Rebecca was just determination painted onto a young girl who felt the loss of her father every day from what she had said in the past,

They had been very close and every other man in her life had paled into insignificance in comparison until the return of Jake Fairmore but what do I know?

Sam added quickly let's have a piece of that lemon meringue then I'll let you into some gossip you're not going to believe this and Sam went on to tell her about Scott Lake Industries and the goods that they imported from India from what she had learned while in her new job there was an ongoing investigation into rumours of child exploitation this shocked Rebecca deeply the well-being of children was something very close to her heart and she was finding it hard to believe that Jake would associate himself with anything like that she listened carefully to all Sam had to say then made a decision there and then well I'm going to look into this and if I find out Jake has anything to do with it that's me finished,

Once and for all and leaving Sam to finish her coffee as she returned to Scott Lake Towers to get the afternoon over and done with Rebecca felt a rise of anger replacing the misery she had experienced in the last month it was all just too much for her to take in as if it wasn't bad enough Jake returning without even telling her he was coming back Olivia Cartwright fawning all over him as soon as he left the taxi and then the idea that the two of them would be plastered all over the monthly magazine to rub her face in it that Jake had a lot to answer for not to mention he had been in India and the very company he was responsible for managing and promoting was being investigated for child exploitation could life at Scott Lake Industries get any worse?

And as she stepped into the foyer and made her way to the lift she was only too happy to turn her back on Jake before he had even a chance to catch her eye and here we are,

Back again in Rebecca's apartment where she has just finished her piano lesson with Ahmed the little boy next door that's perfect,

She said as his fingers released their grip on the ivory keys I'm very proud of you and mummy will be too when she sees your performance tomorrow Ahmed beamed he liked the lady next door she was always ready to take over even when mummy was working the night shift but what about my suit?

He panicked don't worry Ahmed,

It's all sorted Rebecca reassured him I've spoken to church and it's all there waiting for you your mummy's going to have the surprise of her life this is going to be epic,

Said Ahmed yes,

Now let's pack away,

Mummy will be here soon and you need to be ready no sooner had she said it than a knock came at the door mummy,

We've got a surprise for you,

Ahmed beamed as he rushed at his mother,

His arms outstretched a surprise for me?

She exclaimed yes,

Said Rebecca,

It's tomorrow night at the church is that ok?

Ahmed's been practising very hard Anika pulled Ahmed in close to her hospital uniform of course I can't wait then they left,

Taking a loaf of freshly baked bread with them Rebecca sat back on her sofa and pulled her chenille blanket in tight ah,

She said to herself this is it,

Another Friday night it had been a troubling week for her avoiding Jake Fairmore and the many magazines littered on every available surface in the office there was no getting away from the front cover where Jake and Olivia looked very much a couple she looked around her apartment weren't other people her age out setting the world alight?

Not her though,

Not tonight it was time for a phone call to mum and then her new book it wasn't as if she had no options hadn't that chap at church made a bean line for her every time she walked in?

It was certainly a catch maybe she should take him up on his offer that would help to take Jake off her mind yes,

She'd speak to him tomorrow at the performance it was about time she did something decisive she reached for the phone then noticed the package that had been dropped off earlier it was covered in foreign stamps and the packing was smudged where it had been repeatedly franked she jumped up and went next door this came for you,

She said when Anika answered oh no problem,

Said Anika Ahmed wanted to show you his helicopter anyway so Rebecca followed her in to their brightly lit living room across the walls hung embroidered scenes with opulent threads stitched lovingly and scattered across the coffee table Ahmed's artwork showed much promise she picked her way through the foam arrows from his latest set that were littered all over the pale carpet and sat down on the sofa this was a busy home and a happy one one where a child could freely express himself Anika opened the package and handed her the letter inside we've come a long way since those days,

Anika said to Rebecca but Rebecca could see the scars ran deep she began to read all about how Anika and Ahmed had been rescued from a gang in London where they had been forced to work as part of an immigration package offered to them from a very disreputable employer having lived in nothing more than a hovel with Ahmed working at least 12 hours a day their lives had been unbearable and it was only when by some fluke one day a knock came at the door that they were rescued and sent by a charity to Scotland to recuperate and to start a new life for themselves Rebecca could hardly believe it I had no idea you had been through so much you should be very proud of yourselves you're a fantastic mother,

You only have to look at Ahmed to see that they sat down together and spent the rest of the evening talking and that night they became close friends the next evening rolled in pleasantly enough and Rebecca made plans for what promised to be a great night tonight was the night when all local children could showcase their talent and hopefully receive a place at Scotlake Music School if they were good enough she had high hopes for Ahmed he had learned so much in her piano lessons and if anyone deserved a chance,

He did especially after what he had been through she looked through her wardrobe ok,

So she couldn't afford the fancy clothes Olivia Cartwright wore but she could still turn heads yes,

As she had a good eye for the right cart and the most flattering fabrics yes,

The royal blue would do,

With matching stilettos this may only be the church but it was Saturday night and that was reason enough to look her best doubtless Jake Fairmore would be dining in some expensive restaurant with local hoi polloi,

But she had better things to do if nothing else,

She was true to herself and she wouldn't be compromising her morals for money any time soon the sooner she left Scotlake Industries the better she could suffer their double standards no more and had already asked Sam to get her another job she checked her reflection in the mirror and noted the serious look on her face speaking to Anika the night before,

She knew it was more than a coincidence that Scotlake Industries was being investigated for child exploitation and here,

Right next door to her,

Was an example of just that we thought we were very lucky to have had our visas funded for a work scheme we were told about in India Anika had said because I'd recently became a widow,

We were eligible and I thought I had nothing to lose when we were in London,

We were sharing with three other families with one toilet and bath,

And the water was turned off sometimes so we didn't even know that it seemed as though Scotlake Industries had their name plastered all over it how could they?

How could Jake?

Rebecca didn't have the heart to speak to Anika about what she knew but ever since she read the letter,

She made up her mind she couldn't let this happen again but enough of this negativity now she picked her best gold earrings from her jewellery box and put on her matching bracelet,

Her favourite bracelet the one her father had gifted her when she turned 21 and now for the lipstick pillar box red,

I think why not?

She said to herself yes,

You'll do,

And grabbing her old checked coat she called Ahmed away from the television when mummy walks into the church,

She said and sees you all dressed up,

She'll be so proud let's get there quickly and get you changed little man they arrived at the church just in time behind them,

Fractious parents were queuing eager to bag the best parking spots but when Rebecca escorted Ahmed up the pathway all their eyes were upon her especially those of the local GP,

Paul Jacobs hi Paul,

All set?

Rebecca asked as she took off her coat there's seats at the front if you're quick,

He offered and Rebecca took his advice,

Whilst Ahmed was ushered away with the rest of the performers to get changed an hour later everybody agreed,

The performance was a resounding success,

Anika Singh had been overwhelmed with her son's progress,

And even more astounded when Ahmed was awarded a place at Scott Lake Music School holding his certificate he looked tired I'll get a taxi,

Said Rebecca and made her way out with Paul hot on her tail I've got to say,

You look fantastic tonight he gushed as he handed her her coat and following her out,

He waited with her at the kerb the road glistened with a recent rainfall reflecting the warm glow from the street lamps above it would have been the perfect moment for Paul to suggest a date but in a sudden panic,

Rebecca blurted out I think I've left my scarf on my chair she had to stop this before it started leading men on was not her style and Paul seemed like a nice guy he left promptly with any luck their parting would be short and sweet and she stepped forward,

Right to the edge of the kerb the driving drizzle was making it difficult for her to see ahead then all at once,

A sleek black car careered headlong into a large murky puddle sitting deep in the road watch it!

She screamed,

Her temper burning her red hair as it covered her in dirty black water she jumped into the road and ran after the offending vehicle stilettos or not,

She wasn't going to let them get away with it that easily but she needn't have bothered for the large black car ground to a sudden halt why don't you look where you're going?

She screamed again,

Both upset and angry at the same time and no sooner had she said it than the driver's door opened she looked down at the murky stain that was once her favourite dress whoever that driver was they would get a piece of her mind but to her dismay,

A slick suit and a shiny pair of shoes emerged carrying a large black umbrella and I thought you were ignoring me Rebecca froze what?

Really?

This?

After all that's happened,

I have to put up with this?

She pushed the matted hair from her face and straightened the collar of her cheap overcoat then taking one determined step forward she lifted her head high and snapped and that's the best you've got after a whole month?

Humiliation it seems I was wrong about you,

Jake Fairmore you're just as inadequate as you always were and turning on her heel,

She faced the church steps and Paul,

Who was standing there,

His hands empty but Jake was not going to let her get away that easily he grabbed hold of her wrist oh no you don't,

Rebecca Tregoran get off me,

Jake or you'll do what?

Get off me or I'll scream Rebecca Tregoran,

The last thing you'll do in a public place is scream as soon as the words came out Jake knew what he said was ridiculous once Rebecca had put her mind to something she would go with it,

No matter what so he let go just let me speak to you,

Please Rebecca turned to face him,

The rain trickling down her cheeks her light eyes brighter than they had ever been and sensing an impasse,

Jake held his large umbrella over her head as much as she hated herself for it,

She needed to hear what he had to say there had to be an explanation for why he had ignored her go on then,

Say what you've got to say Jake shook his head in disbelief we're standing in the middle of the road,

Rebecca,

Please,

Just get in the car the penetrating rain beat down upon them as the cars drove past each one's occupants eager for the story behind the spectacle had she walked out on him or had he told her to leave either way,

Here were two very nice looking very wet people,

Standing in the middle of a road having a passionate exchange Rebecca refused to move the last thing she wanted was Jake coming to the rescue again her days of being the simpering,

Lovelorn sap were well and truly over she wanted answers,

That was all and gazing into her eyes,

Jake knew once again he was beaten Rebecca Trigoran would not be getting into his car she would not be pulled into his arms and she would not be giving him anything he was so desperate for unless he told her the truth Rebecca was furious and looking into his eyes,

She refused to acknowledge the desperation sitting there I'm waiting why don't you tell me about how you recruited child labour on your recent trip to India or how about you can't keep your hands off Olivia Cartwright the charges were damning there was no getting away from it but Jake was determined I'm sorry Rebecca sorry that's the best you've got she said,

I'm sorry for letting you down it all got a bit on top of me and I didn't know what to do I've had some very bad news you see it's old man Cartwright Jake clenched his fists knowing the truth and putting it into words were two completely different things but there was no way out now standing in front of him in a bedraggled weather worn mess was the one person he did not want to lie to he's my father Rebecca old man Cartwright is my biological father and here we are at Scott Lake Brasserie where Rebecca is telling Sam about what Jake told her in the rain on Saturday night it is now Monday lunchtime but Sam has lost her appetite over what she's just heard how's that possible?

Jake is the son of old man Cartwright I thought you said that old man was trying to fix Jake up with Olivia she's his daughter that's sick,

I'm not surprised you wanted to meet me today and talk it over Rebecca looked just as shocked as Sam was well apparently Olivia is his step daughter according to the entail on old man Cartwright's estate it has to be inherited by a male heir so Olivia can't inherit it anyway that's why he wants them married said Sam scornfully the whole thing's outrageous how can you marry your step sister?

It has been known if they'd never lived together before it's perfectly legal apparently this must be massive for Jake knowing what he knows now he has the identity he's always been looking for this is all he ever wanted I think Sam looked at her through compassionate eyes I know you care about him but you have to think about yourself Jake's head might well be turned now it's a huge estate to inherit isn't it?

You might have to prepare yourself he'll probably just get married to keep his father sweet I'm sorry to have to say it but I'm not sure you can trust him but why does he have to marry her?

It's ridiculous he could inherit the estate without doing that well old man Cartwright obviously loves his daughter doesn't he?

And he wants her to be looked after when he's gone that's what all this is about he's got Jake over a barrel good and proper well it's not Jake's job to look after Olivia Rebecca was getting frustrated and Sam looked out of the window for inspiration the sun was shining but it brought no hope she was at a loss her friend was already in too deep but she owed it to her to be honest with how she saw things okay Rebecca well my job as your friend is to tell you what I think is best for you it's going to be hard for you to see the wood for the trees on this one so I'm going to have to tell you the truth Jake's got to choose between you it's as simple as that does he want to be a shady businessman who marries someone he doesn't love and take advantage of the young and the vulnerable or does he want to be a decent honest hardworking member of the human race he needs to commit himself to what's right I don't know which path he's going to choose and as it stands neither do you Rebecca do you?

But you should know by now so why take the chance it sounds so easy when you say it like that said Rebecca but he's wanted to know where he's from his whole life this is huge for him I do understand that said Sam but that's got nothing to do with you it's his choice and he's got to make it you need to let him go if he comes back to you you know he's the man for you but from what you said I don't know whether he's going to do that he's a businessman remember and this is a golden opportunity for him Sam stopped talking she could see her friend was hurting and she felt terrible for having to spell out the obvious look he'd have to be stupid to let you go but people do stupid things all the time how did you leave it with him anyway?

I was in shock said Rebecca I just froze until Paul called me back and then I realised I was standing in the rain in the middle of the road making a fool of myself well that's something at least you didn't show any weakness said Sam and what about Paul what did he say?

He took me and Nica and Ahmed home and then he asked me out for dinner this Friday really will you go?

Said Sam her mood improving by the moment I don't know Paul is the last thing on my mind well make him your first it won't do Jake any harm to know that you've got options he's not the only man alive in Fort Scott Lake you know this might be just the distraction you need as well Paul's not bad looking and I'm not the only one who sees it everybody's talking about it at work all the girls there have seen him around Sam gave Rebecca a wink which picked her mood up immeasurably Sam's positivity was infectious and if nothing else she needed a little bit of hope so Sam continued with a twinkle in her eye will you do that for me?

Go on the date girl you deserve it go out and be wined and dined but what about Nica and Ahmed said Rebecca how can I live with myself when I'm probably working for the very same company that exploited them they went through hell you know I still haven't said anything I really don't know what to do about it you don't know that for sure said Sam and anyway I got you an interview at my company didn't I so it won't be long before you're working with me it won't be long before you've left Scott Lake Industries for good and Jake Fairmore is far behind you Rebecca brightened up at this you're right it'll all be over soon I can't take much more of this I've had to go off sick in order to give myself time to breathe who'd have thought meeting Jake again was going to turn out to be this complicated well that's good said Sam you've done the right thing and you can always get a certificate from that handsome doctor of yours if you need more time off Rebecca smiled Sam was right she could buy herself more time if she needed being stuck at Scott Lake Industries and concerning herself with the ins and outs of Jake Fairmore's life was doing her no favours at all at the end of the day she was in Scott Lake to make a living to take care of her mother and provide for her as she promised she would life was complicated enough okay so Jake and her had history but this latest development was just too much she had to remember that right was right and wrong was wrong she must put that first whichever path Jake chose to take that was up to him now I've got to get back said Sam looking at the clock we've got a big delivery this afternoon and I've got a million and one things to do I'll see you on Friday okay and you can tell me all about your interview okay and they left Sam to work and Rebecca back home to the next piano lesson she had booked with Ahmed meanwhile over in the boardroom at Scott Lake Towers Olivia Cartwright was doing her best to rub salt into the wounds she's only been here a few months and she's already taken liberties by having time off we need all hands on deck if we're to get this new range out and deliver to the shops in time for Valentine's Day it's just not good enough father Jake sighed people go off sick Olivia there's nothing we can do about that you're right son said old man Cartwright we'll just have to offer overtime to the staff we have available now Olivia we'll finish this meeting and Jake and I will go on to any other business yes father said Olivia and she left promptly her new satin suit catching the light from the large office windows old man Cartwright looked over at his son and smiled I'm meeting the solicitor this weekend and I want you with me son we have much to discuss and many papers to sign ok Mr Cartwright said Jake I understand I'd prefer it if you called me father Jake paused then said quietly there's just something I need to talk about father he was eager to get old man Cartwright on his side I've been looking into alternative labour provision for our product manufacture we have our labour secured for this season son you travelled half way across the world to see it the relationship Olivia has forged with that company has done us proud over the years Jake couldn't believe how little his father knew and how much Olivia had managed to shield from him the labour secured there is unethical on my trip to New Delhi I made some new contacts and I believe we can move forward with a clear conscience old man Cartwright sat silent and Jake took a long look at the man that had moved heaven and earth to find him with greying temples and dark blue eyes he had once been handsome in the talk of Fort Scott Lake his first wife had been the answer to his prayers when they met but she had left him and disappeared without trace he had been a bad husband absent for most of the time too concerned with building his business and it was only when nearly 30 years later someone told him she had died in childbirth he made it his mission to find the son he never knew he had he stared back at his son he had the same expression his first love had carried in her eyes what a handsome boy he was so what do you think father?

Said Jake old man Cartwright thought carefully he had to get it right this time ok son I trust you but let me speak to Olivia first I have always left her in charge of this side of things and he left Jake to consider the proposals he had made earlier that morning it was the end of the week and Rebecca was in the mood to celebrate she had been offered a job working alongside Sam and after her week off she was feeling revitalized now she could put all indecision behind her and look forward to an evening at McGinty's Bar and Grill as the sun sunk behind the mountains she stepped into the softly lit bar her red chiffon peeping out from under the new black coat she had just borrowed and there he was Scott Blake's answer to Clark Gable sitting by himself at the bar she walked towards Paul slowly deliberately if she was going to make an impact she might as well make it count all eyes were upon her as she gazed at the many coloured glass bottles standing to attention behind the bar assistant McGinty's was a special place understated and classy not like that showy Scott Lake Towers soft leather armchairs sat in the tall bay windows facing antique tables and flickering candles the mood was subtle and there was an intimate feel making her ready at last to let her hair down and enjoy the evening but before she had even a moment to say hello a sharp voice shot over her shoulder feeling better are we Rebecca?

She stopped dead in her tracks then quickly regaining her composure Rebecca turned to face her enemy yes Olivia,

I'm on top of the world thank you,

How about you?

And as Olivia walked away Rebecca smiled to herself before catching sight of a soft velvet jacket draped over a broad frame that sat hunched by himself in the corner I hope you enjoyed this episode if you did please consider following me to hear more alternatively you may like to leave a review or perhaps a small donation which enables me to carry on producing these stories just for you back again in Fort Scott Lake it is quiet in the office kitchen and Sam is taking advantage of the fact how do you get on on Saturday night?

She asked you look tired Rebecca was tired she tossed and turned the night before with dreams of her father on the lake where they used to fish in the summer intertwined with a look on Jake's face when he saw her with Paul at McGinty's bar she couldn't spend another night like that this new job was getting more and more demanding and she needed her rest we left immediately because Jake and Olivia were there Paul must have seen the look on my face when I realised after that fiasco in the rain I think he wanted to protect me he's a good man Rebecca I know it's just it's just nothing Jake's made his choice it's not as if he's tried to get in touch is it?

Well Rebecca looked down into her hands there were no notifications on her phone no text,

Nothing maybe I should be the one to send him a message no,

He should have at least tried to put your mind at ease he's the one holding all the cards remember outside the streams swelled with the night's downpour and pools of water collected in the gap between the cobbled stones the storm had not passed unnoticed Rebecca popped her collar and pulled it in close are you looking forward to the spring festival?

Yeah,

Said Sam and I've got a date really?

Yeah,

Little old me on a date,

Would you believe it I've had my eye on her for a while she's out of my league really who is it?

It's Jamie from accounts wow,

You did good there Rebecca smiled nothing made her happier than the happiness of others,

Especially her friends I'll make sure you two are sitting together organising an event on this scale has kept me busy I can tell you and if Rebecca was honest,

She liked being busy which was just as well Lakeside Gifts was creating waves with its locally sourced products so busy Rebecca was likely to remain Sam handed her a black tea and said,

I'm proud of you Rebecca,

You've already made a great impression everyone can see you're taking your new role very seriously but what's this?

More doom and gloom?

The expression on Rebecca's face had dropped again what's up now?

You look like you've seen a ghost I had to invite Jake what?

And Olivia and the old man really?

When are you going to catch a break?

Not any time soon thick dark clouds collected over the mountain tops and for just a moment,

The world went black it seems everybody knows everybody else in Fort Scott Lake,

Don't they?

Especially in town,

Agreed Sam they always invite all the businesses,

Just stay focused you've got a new job,

You've got a new man and you're drop dead gorgeous,

Who could want for more?

Sam could always make Rebecca smile so that's what Rebecca did and she left to get stuck in again with organising the Festival of Colours Lakeside Gifts were supporting the local Hindu community that year and springtime afforded the perfect opportunity to do just that meanwhile,

Over in the boardroom at Scott Lake Towers,

Olivia Cartwright was feeling the pressure you've never questioned my choices before,

Father the labour I secured is the most cost effective and we've been using it for years I don't understand why we have to change it our profits are higher than they've ever been but it's not ethical,

Olivia at least that's what Jake tells me is there something I should know?

Olivia leaned in closer and made sure to use her sweetest voice old man Cartwright may not have known her as a child but she could always turn on the soft little girl act if she needed to no father,

There's nothing you should know,

Everything's fine she placed her perfectly manicured hand on his arm I'll speak to Jake,

Don't worry,

He hasn't been with us long has he and because he's so important to me,

It's my job to help him old man Cartwright smiled with his recent health scare,

He needed things to be easy and Olivia was such a sweet girl who knew the ropes so why not?

Weeks passed and the Festival of Colours finally arrived everyone in Scott Lake Town was excited for the most colourful event they had seen in years there was no sign of rain so vivid lanterns and paper garlands were hung from every tree and street lamp underneath,

The many street traders lined the pathways selling both local and traditional handmade gifts crafted lovingly and with care the CEO of Lakeside Gifts was certainly a clever man and he knew the best way to succeed was to embrace the local community and everyone who was part of it meanwhile in the centre of the town park Rebecca had organised a huge coloured tent inside which sat a fire pit its flames dancing along with the traditional folk musicians and accompanying Indian dancers at the perimeter trestle tables were engulfed in every imaginable exotic dish and delight,

Rich curries and candied treats to name but a few and up above,

Fairy lights were strung from beam to beam the many chairs surrounding the round tables were draped in elaborate Indian cloth and tureens of various iced infusions containing lemon zest and tamarind pulp sat together amongst shiny tiffin boxes and coffee pots Rebecca had borrowed a dark green sari from Anika and she was feeling very glamorous her thick auburn hair had been intertwined with rich gold thread and her palms tattooed with elaborate henna designs in her ears hung large rings of gold and on her wrist her father's bracelet a red hindi spot sat between her two arched eyebrows complimenting her dazzling eyes Ahmet was wearing old clothes in preparation for the brightly coloured powders that were to be thrown at him he was excited for what was to come and Anika his mother wore a bright red sari which sat boldly against her thick dark hair it's so lovely of your company to do this Rebecca she said,

This is going to be a night to remember yes,

I'm glad it was the Hindu festival they chose this year,

Rebecca said you've given me so many great ideas for it I don't know what I would have done without you oh look,

There's Sam with her date don't they look good together little and large laughed Anika and Rebecca laughed too Sam's date towered over her and Sam was clearly enjoying every minute of it they sat down to watch as the music played on it was getting busy now and dark too highly adorned revellers had joined the throng and the promise of coloured powder throwing was quickly bringing the atmosphere to its frenzied conclusion where's Paul?

Said Anika,

I thought you said he was coming oh he is,

Rebecca replied he's been on call today so he'll be along soon and as the noise grew and the light faded Rebecca allowed herself a secret congratulation for how well everything had turned out then all at once there was powder everywhere greens,

Blues,

Reds and oranges clashed mid-air with purples,

Browns and yellows Anika darted off to keep a close eye on Ahmed and the last Rebecca saw of Sam she was leaving the tent hand in hand with the object of her new found affection Rebecca stayed put there was no way she would allow herself to be covered before Paul got there but what was this?

Her gold bracelet was missing she panicked,

Not her special bracelet surely not her father's bracelet she began scrabbling around on the floor next to her chair where was it?

Surely something shiny as gold would stand out amongst everything else she had to find it,

This was the last thing she had to remember her father by then through the mist of chalk and powder it emerged held tightly in between two thick dark fingers Rebecca refused to look up if he thought he could get away with it this time he was mistaken she grabbed the thick bangle but Jake would not let go thank you she said curtly but he still would not let go then all of a sudden Ahmed ran up to her Rebecca,

Rebecca he yelled,

Look what I've got Rebecca turned then saw Ahmed stop dead in his tracks his mouth agape what is it Ahmed?

Said Rebecca and Jake let go they stood up together just as Anika walked towards them and she was just as shocked as Ahmed was is that the man who saved us mummy?

Said Ahmed but before Anika had a chance to reply a voice behind them said it's crazy out there,

There's powder flying everywhere it was Paul and he was covered from head to foot I'm Paul he said as he faced Jake head on offering his hand but Jake seemed ill amused why don't you go and get cleaned up at this Paul's whole demeanour changed hmm he replied,

It seems we've got off to a bad start that's unfortunate isn't it not for me said Jake then he left making sure to brush his palm delicately over the back of Rebecca's silk sari and here we are back again at Scott Lake Town in the apartment of Anika Singh it is late at night and there is a sudden knock at the door the kind of persistent aggressive knock that means business Anika looked through the fisheye lens who is it?

She called it was a bulky giant of a man with slicked back hair and sharp eyes she had never seen him before what do I do?

She said to herself,

Who is this man?

She must ask Rebecca Rebecca was just next door and she might know him and after all two women were certainly better than one Rebecca picked up as soon as the phone rang it was a bad habit looking at her phone and an even worse one expecting it to be Jake in fact she hated herself for it she had to get off this string she was dangling upon she looked at the clock half past nine who was calling at this hour?

Oh it was Anika,

What did she want?

Maybe there was something wrong with Ahmed hello Anika,

What's up?

There's someone at the door,

A man I've never seen before Rebecca went cold this didn't sound good wait there,

I'll be right with you she grabbed her gown and checked the mirror bedhead he used to call her very apt still,

There was no time to brush her hair now she stepped out of her front door as boldly as she could considering she was dressed for bed can I help you?

She said,

Attempting to make her voice as determined as possible no,

The man said I have business with Anika Singh Rebecca made a point of holding her phone in plain sight at this time of night?

She could feel Paul's voice as it resonated through the glass Rebecca?

Anika looked at the man from across her safety chain what is it?

She said,

My boy's sleeping in here,

You nearly woke him up the man stepped towards the door it's quite simple,

If you want to sleep easy in your beds you'll think twice about testifying next week what did you say?

Rebecca's voice came out much higher than usual,

This is intimidation she put her phone to her ear Paul,

Did you hear that?

Yes,

I'm here Rebecca,

What's going on?

That didn't sound good at all someone sent round the heavies and said something about testifying only Anika's done nothing wrong Rebecca glared at the lump who was blocking the corridor maybe we should call the police,

She said and at that,

The burly man descended the carpeted stairwell and returned promptly to his car Rebecca watched from her apartment window from afar she could vaguely make out the outline of a woman,

Sitting in the passenger seat this was the same number plate she'd seen parked at the back of Scott Lake Towers,

When she worked in the basement it was funny the things you noticed after being in a dingy cellar all day long this is one step too far she yelled in disbelief this has Olivia's fake tan painted all over it are you ok Anika?

But Anika was far from ok,

Her face was as pale as the corridor walls how did they find me?

She said,

But Rebecca had no answer for this one second it's ok Paul,

I think that put him off I'll see you tomorrow Rebecca followed Anika into her apartment and put the kettle on hot chocolate was what they needed at a time like this she thought about it carefully perhaps Jake had said something but why would he do that?

Hadn't he been the one to rescue them from their hovel in London?

She waited until Anika had taken a long sip what's it all about?

She said it's about the ring of people who brought us to London said Anika I'm due in court next week for their prosecution why didn't you tell me?

We were sent all over the place,

To loads of different factories for loads of different companies I've only recently found out one of them makes things for a company in Fort Scott Lake it's the company you used to work for Rebecca I didn't want to make things awkward between us Ahmed loves you and you're a good friend Rebecca felt tears sting the back of her eyes tears of frustration and embarrassment I'm so sorry Anika I knew before and I left as soon as I could I didn't know how to tell you but I'm going to be there for you in court,

You're not alone in this Anika unclenched her fists this was a habit she was trying to lose and Rebecca's soft voice did help it's ok once we overstayed our visas we wanted to leave and go home but they took our passports so we couldn't I guess me and Ahmed are the lucky ones we've had ancestors here and we're gifted with a sponsor so we made it out ok in the end a sponsor?

Yes,

The person who owns this flat,

He lets us live here and he's connected me with the hospital I used to be a nurse in India until I was forced by my husband's family to give it up who is it?

Do you know?

I'm not sure but I think it's the man at the festival,

The one who saved us Anika gestured to the four walls surrounding them me and Ahmed like it here it's ok,

We've always felt safe here until now Rebecca swallowed her frustration Jake must have known what he was getting into when he became director of Scott Lake Industries and as for Olivia she glanced at Anika and could see her expression had dropped I don't think I can testify now Rebecca you have to,

Rebecca pressed it'll be on screen won't it,

You won't have to see the gang that got you into this mess but I can't put Ahmed through any more than he's been through already listen,

I'll be there for you,

Come hell or high water we're not going to let them get away with this and you won't have anyone coming to the flat again,

I'll see to that,

Mark my words and laying awake that night Rebecca resolved to do what she could to sort this mess out once and for all he's helped one family and he thinks that absolves him from everything she said to herself,

There must be hundreds of families like Anika's and there's no telling how long Scott Lake Industries has been funding the use of child labour Rebecca was furious and impressed and furious with him at the same time what was it about this man she hated him,

No she hated the choices he made that would have to do as long as she hated something she could remain focused Anika was going to need all the support she could get it was the next morning Rebecca was in the ballroom at the top of Scott Lake Towers Jake Fairmore was having a long awaited discussion with Olivia Cartwright so how about it,

Said Olivia it's what father wants you know Jake thought carefully about what he would say next it was true,

Old man Cartwright had given him everything a position,

A life,

A hope but he hadn't given him respect Jake had earned that himself his father had shown him genuine affection as well the kind of affection a man desperate to find his long lost son gives letting old man Cartwright down now was beyond anything Jake was prepared to do but I don't love you Olivia Olivia moved in closer such words meant nothing to her you will in time,

She said and anyway,

It'll kill him if he believes I'll be destitute he's a sick man remember you'd never be destitute Olivia,

Stop being so dramatic Olivia ran her fine hair through her fingers her beady eyes watched Jake like an eagle watches his prey not a drop of emotion in either of them well he promised my mother I'd grow old in Cartwright manner we owe him that don't we to honour his wishes I mean Jake sighed within months he had become we and if Olivia had her way,

Everything that went with that he looked at her straight on she was beautiful in a detached kind of a way her eyes were perfect almonds her cheekbones high and determined but her mouth,

That one thing that should express her womanly virtue,

That one thing that should soften as she spoke and widen at the mere thought of him her mouth was thin and unforgiving it was a hard pale line dry but for the gloss she applied hourly this he could not reconcile with his gaze passed down her stockinged legs stopping only when it reached her patent shoes they reflected the starched seams in her stiff skirt such commitment to unerring perfection why was she like that?

His mind wandered it would be so easy just to take her now perhaps that was what he needed anything to alleviate the unyielding biological drive that would quite happily guide all rational thought if he let it it wasn't as if Rebecca was single was it?

That ship had sailed and if his mind drifted to her in the heat of the moment who would know?

He looked out of the window for divine intervention and caught the reflection of the man he'd become he recoiled,

What on earth was the matter with him?

What was he thinking?

What was he becoming?

He pushed his chair back in disgust but it was too late the boardroom doors were now wide open and standing boldly between them was Rebecca Dregoran glaring at the ridiculousness of it all you!

Jake was embarrassed,

Then ashamed then angry at the same time his voice rang cold,

Belying the sentiment in his eyes but Rebecca wasn't looking in his eyes she was too busy taking in the wide walnut desk,

The plush velvet upholstery and the fine Persian rugs so this was what it was all for,

Was it?

It certainly wasn't Olivia who'd turned his head yet here he was,

Giving in to her like the weak excuse for a man he'd become pathetic Rebecca took it all in this was her competition,

Inanimate loveliness expensive furniture and a luxurious lifestyle opulence,

Glamour and fast cars if that was all Jake wanted,

He was welcome to it at least now she knew where she stood let him wrap himself up in Olivia's fine cloth it would never be as soft as her bare skin or as sweet as her full lips stop it,

For God's sake,

Rebecca,

Stop!

What are you doing here,

Rebecca Tregoran?

Olivia's voice tore at her thoughts,

Leaving fine ladders that would run all the way if she'd let them this was the sorceress of Scott Lake and she was doing her best to bewitch Jake Fairmore well,

If he was stupid enough to fall for it so be it people said money did funny things to you it had certainly done that to the honest and trustworthy boy Rebecca had once known how can we help?

Jake's tone was flat,

As though he was speaking through someone else's voice and he'd said we like it was second nature Rebecca took a breath as you are well aware,

Jake Scott Lake Industries are due in court next week she pointed to Olivia and she had seemed fit to approach Anika Singh and threaten her into keeping her mouth shut every muscle in Jake's body tensed he pushed his chair back further still but Olivia moved not an inch do you have proof of this?

Rebecca paused Jake really was changed I have my word well,

It's your word against Olivia's and in a court of law,

That doesn't mean very much what was he saying?

He was talking to the woman as if he didn't even know her and yet he couldn't stop himself it is not appropriate for you to be approaching Scott Lake Industries like this so if you would like to make an appointment we will see if we cannot fit you in at a time more convenient to us all he'd lit the blue touch paper now he'd watch her anger ignite any emotion was better than none he just needed something but this time it was different Rebecca was beholden to her emotions,

It was true just being in the same room as him was tearing at her soul but she would be calm this time anything rather than give him what he wanted one thing was certain though hell would freeze over before she would flatline with her emotions as he had chosen to do that's fine Jake,

She said calmly another meeting won't be necessary I'm leaving now,

But before I go Ahmet senses love he says he'll be happy to play piano for you,

Anytime and with that she left the back of her skirt as wrinkled as the knots in her stomach make sure and give my regards to Paul Jacobs Olivia called as Rebecca descended the staircase then waiting until Rebecca was well and truly gone Olivia snapped what the hell is she talking about Jake?

You never told me you knew that boy I hope you liked this episode if you did please consider following me for more or leave a review or small donation which will help so much in the work I produce just for you and here we are at Glenroth Hotel near Loch Aire in Fort Scott Lake where Olivia Cartwright is up to something you were on fire last night said the tall lean man in the night blue suit he had an eye for the immaculate and so far Olivia Cartwright had ticked every box he arranged then rearranged his tie making sure to touch each collar in turn then he took a tissue from the box in reception and wiped his thin hands thoroughly he liked this woman she knew the rules and was happy to play the game and she wasn't bad to look at either make sure you check out before anyone notices he said then he left via the back exit Olivia checked her phone the court hearing was at 12 that would give her time to get showered and back to Scott Lake Towers then the right honourable Lord Macrae would do his thing and it would all be over meanwhile in Rebecca's apartment Anika was feeling very nervous I know this means we're going to get support from the government but Mr Fairmore's been so good to us she said I don't want to let him down or get him in trouble let's just see what happens shall we said Rebecca it's not worth worrying about now you just have to tell the truth Anika Scott Lake Industries has to pay for the choices they've made otherwise this is going to keep happening added Paul from behind the kitchen counter at the end of the day Jake Fairmore is trying to protect a company that supports cruelty and abuse and that puts him in the wrong Rebecca flinched it sounded so bad when it was said out loud but Paul was right that was exactly what Jake was doing it was almost time to leave with Ahmed safely in school they could watch the events play out without fear of him knowing there must be an end to the threats and the repercussions so Rebecca could draw a line under Scott Lake Industries and everything associated with it she checked her phone exactly what was she looking for she didn't know an apology?

How ridiculous and wasn't Paul standing right next to her he'd been a rock throughout even if she had insisted they were just good friends he was obviously playing the long game and Rebecca had to admit the more he stood by her and the more time that passed the more viable an option he became half an hour later they were making their way into Scott Lake Crown Court surrounded by journalists from the local press eager for a juicy scoop Miss Singh,

How do you feel now it's all out in the open?

Called one what conviction are you hoping for?

Came another Rebecca's hackles went up how on earth did they know about this she pulled a neeker into her and looked to Paul for assistance but to her horror he was busy chatting to the same man she'd seen him with in McGinty's the week before what's he playing at?

She said to herself this was unexpectedly low of him the last thing a neeker needed at a time like this was publicity she was struggling enough as it was what are you doing Paul?

Rebecca screamed she could feel her temper rising she hated petty jealousy and this attempt to undermine Jake publicly was nothing short of pathetic come on a neeker I've got you she said just ignore them they struggled inward and headed straight for the powder room wherein they could rearrange their bruised pride being in the right was one thing but being forced to make a display of it on the front page of the local rag was something completely different a neeker deserved to walk into the court with her head held high but they'd been forced to shuffle in like two naughty school children not only that,

Now everyone at Ahmed's school will be gossiping about it too I'm so sorry a neeker she said through gritted teeth I had no idea the papers would be here and when they finally entered the courtroom it was all Rebecca could do to refrain from giving Paul a piece of her mind all rise they faced the defence Jake and Olivia stood resolute on the opposite side of the courtroom with their lawyers and various attendees as far as rumour had it,

Old man Cartwright was in hospital and was ignorant of what was about to take place Rebecca averted her eyes she'd seen enough of them together the week before and she didn't need reminding of just how low Jake had stooped the crown against Scotlake Industries came the announcement then in walked the Right Honourable Lord Macrae Olivia's smile said all there was to say there had to be some benefits to belonging to Fenmore alumni and Peter Macrae was one of them and so the proceedings began first the court heard of the recent prosecution of an exploitation gang in London then the focus turned to Scotlake Industries and how it had allegedly used their labour in the production of their commercial goods the lawyer for Scotlake Industries put forward a plea of not guilty and the defence claimed it could prove they had put in place reasonable procedures to prevent the facilitation of such Rebecca's derisive snort was met with contempt she was doing her best to keep it together but watching Anika sink lower and lower into her chair she couldn't help herself Jake meanwhile had travelled back to when he first got an inkling things were not as they seemed old man Cartwright had singled him out as a favourite from the first but he was a cautious man and had kept the truth about his identity for a considerable time Jake had been at Scotlake Industries for three whole months when he embarked on his first trip to India it was only then he discovered the depth of Olivia's deception and only then Olivia demanded her stepfather told the truth about who he was so Jake would not believe and expose her Jake was shocked when he found out what Olivia was up to and determined to do something to make it right but now he was stuck between a rock and a hard place stuck between trying to protect his father from the ugly truth and trying to protect Anika and Ahmed from their fate at the hands of an immigration gang if this all went wrong he would be the one who was prosecuted doubtless Olivia would have a contingency plan to protect herself she had certainly destroyed all the associated paperwork and covered her tracks every step of the way and sure enough after some deliberation the defence proved there was no evidence to suggest any payments made were linked to this immigration gang Anika was asked to testify but to Rebecca's horror as she made her way to the stand she took one look at Olivia Cartwright and collapsed a written statement will suffice said Lord Macrae so that is what happened Anika produced a statement which she was careful to ensure served only to commend the behaviour of the man who had saved her I'm sorry Rebecca she whispered I just can't I understand Anika it's ok Rebecca soothed everything will be ok she realised now she had expected too much of her friend and shooting daggers at her enemy from across the crowded courtroom Rebecca had no choice but to accept the prosecution had reached an impasse and would now turn its attention to Jake Fairmore so when you first visited New Delhi and the factories there you had no idea there was any sign of misconduct said the barrister for the prosecution no said Jake but being naturally curious I was keen to see the London factory for myself so I chose to visit it before returning to Scotland and when was this?

About three months after I joined Scotlake Industries and there you discovered the truth and managed to rescue Anika Singh is that correct?

I stumbled upon a woman and her son living in squalid conditions they were forced into slave labour but there was no evidence to my mind this was in any way connected with Scotlake Industries well that's a lie said Rebecca to herself it must be and you have been supporting this woman ever since without informing the authorities is that also correct?

Jake's face dropped yes he said Rebecca listened intently Jake was withholding information he must have known Scotlake Industries was using child labour but he didn't admit it and that made him just as guilty as Olivia she watched him closely for any sign of weakness but Jake Fairmore had a great poker face there is no doubt about it Jake meanwhile was exhausted not only had he been keeping this secret from his father he had also been keeping it from the law they broke for recess and after they returned Lord Macrae summed up what he considered to be an open and shut case you have avoided going through the correct channels but there is no doubt you have changed Miss Singh's life for the better he said to Jake you will be prosecuted for withholding information but I am convinced your intentions were honourable and you were on the way to registering Miss Singh and her son legally furthermore I appreciate you have taken on the well being of Miss Singh and her son personally to include finding her meaningful voluntary work and organising academic support and I am satisfied you are taking all appropriate steps to legal her documentation but this hasn't been done within the time frame you will therefore face a considerable fine Jake Fairmore and are best advised to go through the correct procedures in future I therefore conclude there has not been enough evidence to support a conviction of the knowledge of child labour use by Scotlake Industries at this point Lord Macrae looked directly at Olivia I would however suggest more stringent methods are adopted in future to negate all possibility of association with such all rise and as Olivia made a public display of congratulating Jake on a job well done Rebecca took Anika's arm and left with Paul trailing meekly behind many months have passed since the court hearing and Olivia Cartwright is doing her best to seal the deal before her stepfather has given the all clear for yet another health scare I'm so glad you're feeling better father she said in her sweetest voice let's get you back home where you belong you gave us a scare there it's nothing Olivia just a murmur that's all people have them all the time well it's not nothing to me what would I do without you you're everything I've got now that mummy's gone old man Cartwright replied you mustn't let your auntie hear you say that she and your mother were like twins so close they were she'll always be there for you and your dear cousins you've plenty of those that love you you always have had I don't know why you stopped me inviting them over he rubbed his tired eyes secretly he was finding all this a bit too much in the relatively short time he'd known her Olivia had always been very independent not someone to fuss like this but lately her demands were becoming bigger and bigger and he just didn't need the stress right now right that's enough said nurse Trevoric as she checked his stats it's time for a rest Mr Cartwright otherwise you won't be going anywhere when your son gets here let alone home she plumped up his cushions and he sat back in her extensive experience most daughters ease their father's stress but not this one she did nothing but nag and demand why didn't she give her stepfather a break old man Cartwright sighed he needed to see Jake and get a calmer take on things all this talk of weddings was getting too much he would speak to his son again but he wasn't going to press him to rush into it hadn't he got it wrong with Jake's mother all those years ago he wouldn't be doing that again Jake was one of a kind and old man Cartwright could not think of a better person to carry Scott Lake Industries forward into a new era Jake meanwhile was slowly coming to terms with being prosecuted without his father knowing what with the ongoing health battles and Olivia laying it on very thick the last thing Jake wanted to do was burden him with a grim truth that could have easily caused the downfall of Scott Lake Industries but he was satisfied Olivia had learned her lesson and he'd felt much better about things after Olivia's unexpected heartfelt apology after the trial everyone made mistakes and she'd been carrying too much responsibility before he got there so the way he saw it,

It wasn't really any wonder she made the rash decisions she had don't worry Olivia,

He'd said when he saw her tears fall,

It's over now and it's time for new beginnings then walking into a new phase,

He had turned his back on his past and the constant confusion he felt around Rebecca Tregoren it was time to look ahead to return Scott Lake Industries to the force to resistance it used to be,

With him at the helm he wanted so much to make his father proud,

Especially after the faith he had shown in him,

And if Jake had to sacrifice that childhood pipe dream,

Then so be it it was never going to amount to anything anyway,

Rebecca being the way she was she would never let him forget how he lied in court he entered Glenroth Hotel as the best venue in Fort Scott Lake this was the perfect place to host the new corporate launch and he'd heard the rooms were plush too Mr Fairmore or should I say Cartwright said the girl at reception yes,

Cartwright it is please make yourself comfortable and the hotel manager will be with you shortly Jake settled himself into one of the large wing back chairs,

Their soft tan leather complimented the oak panelling and the timber boards he wondered how many generations of the Cartwright clan had trodden this path as he gazed through the golden windows to the sea of green beyond this was his life now an elegant,

Refined existence where he had the time and the support to achieve the success he had always striven for he looked around,

Two staff had just settled in the corner,

Gossiping away behind them a large bookshelf,

Lined with antique books just like the ones Rebecca organised for the charity drive he said to himself Cartwright you say,

Said one of the voices yeah,

That's his name now,

He's the long lost heir of Scott Lake Industries didn't you know?

There was an announcement in the classifieds a while ago the only Cartwright I ever saw was the daughter yeah,

I've seen her about she's a bit of a stunner isn't she?

If you like that sort of thing Jake sighed,

He hated gossip but there was something about this conversation he just couldn't ignore she was here before the trial,

This was something new yeah I know,

And not for the first time either she's got a thing going with that Mary bloke I think,

You know the judge?

Don't say anything though,

We're supposed to keep schtum about our guests Jake's blood ran cold this was outrageous Olivia hadn't changed at all,

It was all just a big act that woman would do anything to get what she wanted hadn't he kept quiet about her all this time and what she had done?

What a blind idiot he'd been,

He'd made sure old man Cartwright had remained in the dark about everything it hadn't been easy he'd had to put a stop on any papers coming to the house or the hospital and he'd forbidden the staff to talk about it his father hated mobile phones so he was ok there but it turned out it was all for nothing he had protected Olivia for nothing he would just have to have it out with her later Rebecca meanwhile was sitting in McGinty's bar with Sam sampling the weekend special and pouring her heart out I'm at a crossroads now it feels like the last few months my whole perspective has changed Sam I can't do this anymore as she spoke she took in the softly lit interior it would doubtless be a long while until she saw it again what do you mean?

Said Sam well my auntie recently passed away and my mum's inherited some money so I don't have to worry too much about that now she told me not to worry about her anymore and said I should look after myself it's not that I don't like it here but any vague hopes I might have had about Paul Jacobs died the moment he sneaked around trying to make deals with a local press and as for Jake Fairmore,

The less said about that the better it feels like my time in Fort Scott Lake has come to its natural conclusion it's been great Sam but hanging onto some crazy dream of a light at the end of the tunnel is doing me no good whatsoever I need to go home it's time Sam watched as Rebecca's expression dropped to the floor you're going back home?

Yes I think so Sam placed a reassuring hand on Rebecca's arm you have to do what's best for you you haven't been yourself lately,

That I'm sure I could see the outcome in court hit you hard what happened to Anika and Ahmed anyway?

I haven't seen them about lately they moved south to make a fresh start and who can blame them,

Said Rebecca Anika's getting all the support she needs in the local Indian community and they've found a great school for Ahmed with piano lessons and everything so he can build on all that he learned at Scott Lake Music School it sounds like everything you touch has turned to gold,

Said Sam our company's certainly the better for having you and it's been great,

Said Rebecca it's not like I'll be a million miles away anyway,

Just a train ride and you'll be back for my wedding?

Of course,

Said Rebecca,

I can't wait Jamie's the best thing that ever happened to me and you for her Sam,

You both seem so happy I'm over the moon really Rebecca and Samantha spent the rest of the afternoon laughing and chatting,

Chatting and laughing and by the end of it,

Rebecca's mood had lifted immeasurably she was going home at last to teach at Sunday School again and run the Girl Scouts to pick the blackberries when they were in season and sing at the top of her voice down Lumbee Lane where she knew only the weeping willows would hear her she could fish on Flitwick Lake as she had done with her father all those years before and watch the sun set from the balcony outside her bedroom where she could dream happy dreams and leave Fort Scott Lake where it belonged in the past the sun was going down now so she switched on the lights on her bike and tucked in her long skirts beneath her it was only five minutes home and a warm autumn evening so it would be a pleasant ride and there was a slight breeze which would make it all the more enjoyable life was good and she had so much to look forward to the traffic was light for a change but then it was the weekend most people would be sitting in a pub garden somewhere watching the sun go down and in no time at all she was sailing down steep hill her red hair flying her grin running from ear to ear this is the life she declared out loud at last she was free she had made the decision she had told Sam and she was going home to her mother and everything she'd been so reluctant to leave behind as the sun sank lower still a soft shadow enveloped the mountains and all at once it was dusk she wasn't quite sure how it happened shock does that to you but within seconds she was sprawled on the road her knees grazed her elbows covered in blood and as she opened her eyes she could just make out the same number plate she had seen all those months ago outside her flat the day Anika was threatened and here we are back in Scott Lake Infirmary where Jake is sitting at his father's bedside desperate to get him back in the comfort of his own home nurse Trevoric tells me you had a sleepless night father what happened yesterday why was I prevented from picking you up Olivia was with me I was fine it's nothing son well it doesn't sound like nothing to me what did she have to say she hasn't been on about the wedding again has she I've told her she must let you rest and not bother you with anything that might cause you undue stress we can sort things out later old man Cartwright's eyes rested on his son's softened expression Jake always gave him hope this stay in Scott Lake Infirmary was just a temporary setback and things would be calmer now his son was here things were always calm when Jake was around he could think clearly when his son was around and when they were finally married Jake would calm Olivia down too she was always so flighty it was time to get things settled so he didn't have to worry anymore yes old man Cartwright agreed we'll sort things out later from where he sat Jake was secretly devastated his father looked far worse than when he last saw him these chest pains were a recurring problem even if they were only symptoms of anxiety the strain was beginning to show Olivia just wouldn't back off stress induced the doctor had said bed rest he had ordered but what rest had his father had little at the hands of Olivia it seemed she'd been at him again like she always was when she wanted something why oh why couldn't his father see it she was a user and a manipulator and Jake had had enough but he must not say anything yet his father needed the care only he could provide the time and commitment of someone who loved and respected him he couldn't lose him now not now they had found each other finally having a real identity meant everything to him and the fact his father was such a good man made life all the more worth living don't worry about Olivia old man Cartwright continued she's just keen to get things moving Jake that's all she loves you and she can't wait to be married indignance rose up from Jake's gut love?

Olivia didn't know the meaning of the word he felt sick to think of the demand she had placed upon his father her actions proved she loved no one but herself how dare she push him like this what kind of a person would visit an ailing man with only their interests at heart let alone sleep with a local judge to make sure she was let off the hook for her seedy wheeling and dealing he stood up abruptly tugging at his sleeves as if to remove the dust settling there it was time for change right let's get moving then it's sunny in the library now and when I left cook was baking your special scotch pies they'll be ready by the time we get back he draped a velvet housecoat over his father's shoulders and tucked their lavish cords into its pockets then you can finish your dickens with a nice cup of Yorkshire tea their eyes met and at that moment the two men shared an understanding this once strong pillar of Scotlake business community would allow himself to be vulnerable to Jake alone and in return Jake would remain by his side for as long as he needed him meanwhile over in ward 2 Rebecca was rubbing her eyes repeatedly after coming round from the anaesthetic where am I?

She said to herself I feel sick she's awake said a familiar voice Rebecca you're awake Rebecca raised her eyelids a quarter of an inch then shut them again the piercing lights only exacerbated the pain in the back of her skull Rebecca there it was again that voice it wasn't father she'd said goodbye to him the night before and it wasn't mother somehow Rebecca knew she wasn't with her yet so who was it?

Rebecca can you hear me?

You're in Scotlake infirmary you've had an accident then another voice more urgent more official Rebecca Tregoren open your eyes if you can hear me there were hands upon her now and she could hear beeps and whirs trolleys rolled past like speed trains and various hushed voices collected in the shadow of the white noise it was so much nicer being asleep she must go back to sleep Rebecca Tregoren it's time to wake up you are in Scotlake infirmary and there it was again the hospital she was in hospital wait what?

She was where?

With a deep breath Rebecca willed her eyes to open and there dancing in the blinding spotlights were the brightly coloured crocheted squares she knew so well Sam it was Sam in all her rainbow glory looking like she'd not slept in a week thank god Rebecca I've been worried sick something was itching it was the back of her hand she snatched at the plastic tube no a heavy hand grabbed her wrist this nurse meant business stop that or we'll have all sorts of problems you've been in surgery Rebecca and you were coming out of the anaesthetic it's time to wake up now and say hello your friend's been sitting with you all night long it was almost 30 minutes later before Rebecca was completely compus mentis Sam had been nattering non-stop but she couldn't really make sense of it something about a dark car and her bike then all at once as if jolted from a dream Rebecca was back at the bottom of steep hill her raw palms resting on cold stone was it serious she asked in bewilderment I think I got up or maybe I didn't is my bike broken more broken than you it went over the bonnet you were spared that thank god Rebecca's face crumpled at Sam's words and her hand shot up in recognition don't touch it they're doing the graft later graft Rebecca swallowed hard and my leg it won't move part of her didn't want to know lack of feeling was never a good sign you've got pins in it it'll heal tears stung the back of Rebecca's eyes she wasn't a vain person but her face why did it have to be her face sensing her pain Sam took her hand it'll take time Rebecca but it will heal and as Rebecca shut her eyes to the grim truth Sam left for a stiff espresso and the phone to deliver the bad news to Mrs Tregoren the sun was at its highest point when the black Bentley tackled the long gravel drive it was a relief to be back at Cartwright Manor in the past few months Jake had come to think of it as home many a night he'd wandered the vast grounds imagining the life he could lead with Rebecca as its mistress he could just see her now draped in red and gold Cartwright tartan how it would compliment her fiery tresses and she would love these gardens from what he could remember she lived for the great outdoors walking gardening and fishing had always been her thing more often than not barefoot and fancy free it was no use even after everything that had passed he was still thinking about her he must get things settled then slowly gently he would find a way to tell his father his heart was elsewhere whether Rebecca accepted him or not he could no longer live this lie whatever happened he could never marry Olivia he knew that now he glanced over to where old man Cartwright sat in the last few months they'd forged a real connection and there was a chance albeit a slim one he would accept what Jake had to say great to see you back sir called the gardeners as he lowered the window great to be back old man Cartwright replied behind them the vibrant blooms danced in a welcome display of crimson and violet how Jake would miss this place if his plan failed but he'd reached a crossroads now and there was only one path he was willing to take he'd made enough mistakes this was an opportunity to put things right and be the man he was born to be all he had to do was get Olivia out of the picture for a while the opportunity came sooner than expected dinner had been a light but formal affair and the conversation had been kept simple in recognition of previous stressful events Jake ate little and made sure to avoid the red wine but the same could not be said of Olivia after the risks she'd taken the night before even she was feeling the pressure then as quickly as it began the plates were pushed away with exclamations of exhaustion followed by promises of a gentle morning stroll with the terriers if the old man had an easy night he rose to leave and the moment the door clicked behind him the dining hall became shrouded in what was to come Jake sat back heavily let Olivia be the one to begin that way he'd have something to work with father looks better now he's home,

Doesn't he?

And there it was,

Pathetic no thanks to you he couldn't help himself he despised Olivia's vain attempt at small talk just as he despised her efforts to lure him in with her seductive smile I beg your pardon?

Olivia hadn't seen this coming Judge McRae ring any bells?

I must admit,

Olivia,

You wear deceit surprisingly well it's just your colour Olivia's fine cut glass shot straight to her lips and as the thick candles flickered on her cold skin turned paler still well I have to have something to occupy me,

Jake you're hardly coming up with the goods now,

Are you?

He watched her closely that flicker in her eyes was probably the most genuine emotion she had ever shown but what did that matter?

It meant nothing to him there never was anything between us there never will be anything between us and if I have my way,

Olivia,

We will never be in the same room again now stop badgering father leave him alone,

Otherwise he'll have a heart attack is that what you want?

Not really her voice was cold its tone sullen like that of a petulant child what would I gain from that?

I'll see hell freeze over before you take everything that's rightfully mine now the mask was off rightfully yours,

Jake coughed so that's how you see it Olivia drained her glass and poured herself another all attempts at civility were now futile this was war and she'd have to dip into her arsenal and fast okay Jake,

If that's the way you want to play it I will tell father everything and I'll make sure he knows I did it all because of him because he never really had the time for my mother because he treated her like a trophy wife because all this time,

Little old me has been trying desperately to impress him because I know he doesn't really love me either it's just guilt I'll remind him he placed too much pressure on me after mother died and I made the decisions I made because I couldn't handle it then I'll make him understand I'm the product of his creation and that he's obliged to pay for that Jake bit down hard and if that doesn't work I'll remind him of your mother's picture he keeps in a drawer by his bed the one that drove mummy to an early grave he could keep quiet no longer you made the decisions you made Olivia because you were heartless and cold my father gave you a great opportunity and you abused that and the good name of everything he stands for I spoke to the accountant you've been pilfering money from Scotlake Industries for the best part of a year enough is enough and none of that changes anything Jake your father will be heartbroken when I get him to face up to his responsibilities is that what you want for his final years?

Jake looked up at the huge painting that took pride of place over the mantelpiece its ornate gold frame said all there was to say this was his father's empire and he should fight for it but if he was honest he didn't have the heart rather have an ignorant father than a broken hearted dead father what do you want Olivia?

You know what I want it's never going to happen why?

Because you're still kidding yourself about that cheap wretch Rebecca Tregoran Jake's heavy fists met solid oak with no consideration to the pain it would cause I've spoken to an independent lawyer he hissed there's a document I can sign if father agrees it puts an end to the end tale on the house once and for all he straightened his back and spread his arms wide you can have it Olivia and the judge and that simp of a doctor if he takes your fancy but you won't have me he reached for a large manila envelope on the side and shoved it across the table at her there's a trade show coming up tomorrow take the purchasing team to London with you that'll give me time to bring father round to this way of thinking and with that he span on his heel and left it was late in the afternoon the next day when Jake learned of the hit and run he'd been sitting in the study going over how to approach his father that night when an announcement came over the local news requests were being made for more information about an incident with a black car at the bottom of steep hill it had seemed just like any other announcement at first but it wasn't of course and all at once when he realised what had happened the world went silent nothing mattered anymore not Olivia's threats,

Not the house not anything and here we are back at Cartwright Manor where the clouds are collecting as Jake sits alone on the patio picking to pieces the events of the day before he could have prevented such a thing from happening he might have known such a thing would happen according to the broadcast Rebecca had almost been killed and now she was lying in hospital on the road to a long recovery why on earth hadn't he been there for her if they'd been together she would have been driving a car not a rickety old bike then again that wasn't quite true was it Rebecca would do what she wanted regardless,

That was part of what made her so wonderful he covered his head in his arms and what about Olivia's car?

It had been in the garage for the past couple of days he wouldn't put it past her if he found out she had anything to do with this he'd kill her with his own bare hands so help him Rebecca,

What have I done?

The sun cut through the grey mass casting a broad flame over the sweeping lawns behind him a cool breeze wafted through the tall Georgian doors and there was old man Cartwright looking markedly better for a good night's sleep it certainly is good to be back Jake glanced at him across the silverware there was no point in hiding it any longer he would have to say something I.

.

.

What's the matter son,

Have you been up all night?

You look terrible Jake froze,

All strength had left his body and with it the will to make the truth more palatable I've been living a lie he could hardly bear to finish the sentence yes this was his father but if he said the word out loud he would be confused once more he scratched impatiently at his five o'clock shadow this divided loyalty was killing him it's time you knew what do you mean son,

Come on this is not like you,

What's happened?

I'm in love with someone else the words hovered like unwelcome guests Jake waited for a reply for his father to tell him he'd let him down for him to be labelled a disappointment and told he'd gone back on his word but no reply came and lowering himself into the seat opposite old man Cartwright picked up the daily news and dived into the front page as though nothing had passed between them meanwhile,

Over in Scotlake Infirmary Rebecca was getting ready to leave Mrs Tregoran had arrived and Sam was there too waiting behind the wheelchair ready to get her best friend home as soon as possible the taxi's here now sweetheart it'll be a long drive so you'll need to get going if you're to get back for lunch Rebecca frowned then winced,

Then frowned again food was the last thing on her mind you okay love?

Mrs Tregoran rested her creased fingers on her daughter's arm only the day before she'd been out in the sun amongst her hardy perennials weeding and planting and making ready for their next get together but now she was here in the hospital facing the one thing no mother wants to face their child's pain she was determined to get Rebecca out of there as soon as possible there was no need for her to stay in Scotlake she would never have to work away again Rebecca recognised this look her mother was scared yet pleased at the same time scared of the mess her daughter had managed to get herself into and pleased she was finally getting out of it she'd gotten herself into many scrapes as a young girl not least of all by setting fire to her rubbish bin because that was the best way to get rid of rubbish but she was getting older now and finding herself in the middle of controversy was quickly losing its appeal the only good thing to come of this was the close relationship she'd formed with Sam you will give me a call when you get there,

Won't you?

Her best friend asked as she pushed her into the whitewashed corridor of course,

She answered and everything will look different once we're on the road,

Won't it,

Becky?

Her mother interjected you'll see,

We'll be back in no time Mrs Tregoren turned her back on the hospital and looked towards the mountains she'd made a concerted effort to avoid showing it but she was seething that boy Jake had promised he'd look after Rebecca and he failed abysmally she trusted him to get her a job and keep her safe and he let her down she had hoped they'd both reconcile as her husband predicted they would when he was alive but no,

Jake had had his head turned with the promise of a fat cheque and a luxurious lifestyle how he had changed the Jake of yesteryear who'd hugged her and joked about how she never aged was far removed from the one Sam just spoke about what on earth had happened to him?

It took just over two hours to get back to Fort Denning Rebecca hadn't so much as glanced out of the window before she fell into a deep sleep but when the busy road was far behind them and a stony mountain track,

The only thing running between east and west she opened her eyes once more and the old sense of wonder crept back in she was a child again,

Running alone through the highland hills and laughing heartily at the jokes father told her every night before bed her only companions were the wind and the rain the blazing sun and the falling snow then,

Every evening,

Just as the sun set her sheepdog would arrive and she would follow her flock back home she let down the window and gazed out this was her father's land she was safe here the tall pine trees and gravel path would announce any visitors,

Whether they wished to be announced or not and as the long days became short weeks,

Rebecca settled happily into the old log cabin she called home it was almost two months later when the unexpected snow fell the golden leaves clung to their parents like belligerent children but when at last they landed as weightless kisses upon the hardened soil Rebecca knew it was time to get up her bandages were off and the cast was gone it was time to face the music there you are,

Said her mother as she joined her on the dew-covered balcony look at the gift Jack Frost brought Rebecca gazed out at the snow-capped pines her mother was right,

This was a gift the hope and faith she'd been waiting for didn't good things always happen in the snow?

I can feel father with us,

She said pulling her blanket in closer he's always with us,

Her mother replied but yes,

His presence is stronger today now the snow's here he'd be very proud of you Becky,

You know that,

Don't you?

They sat together peering into the thick forest for the slightest sign of life but even the deer were hiding now it was cold winter had brought a frosty pine to the air that danced across Rebecca's cheeks but her hand no longer shot to the thin feathered scar it was less angry than it had been and it no longer burned with the salt from her tears in fact,

This was the first day she hadn't felt the urge to scratch it I can see that old smile coming back Mrs Tregoran beamed but Rebecca was unwilling to jinx it so what are we baking today?

You?

Cook?

Her mother sat back in mock disbelief well I've got to start somewhere,

Haven't I?

Then I can be brilliant at everything they laughed out loud until the landline cut through the cold air like a sharp knife don't answer it if you don't want to,

Rebecca shot it was from Fort Scott Lake it had to be perhaps from the hospital or maybe it was from work trying to find out when she was coming back that was never going to happen the sick pay helped though not that mum would take anything from her the poor thing was doing a terrible job of hiding her guilt it wasn't her fault of course but mum always blamed herself,

Bless her helping her after father died was the least Rebecca could do for all the love and kindness she'd had growing up and she would be there for her again as soon as she could lose this crippling anxiety it's definitely McStayton's,

Mrs Tregoran lied as she stood up they're calling to arrange delivery but I can pick up the shopping myself if I want to maybe you could come she knew she was pushing it but she was keen to strike while the iron was hot after all it was rare for Rebecca to get out of bed these days maybe they sat in silence until the phone rang out then Rebecca looked at her mother closely as if she was seeing her for the first time since childhood her temples were greying the sparkle she had when her husband was alive had dulled to a quiet resignation Mrs Tregoran with her rose-tinted skin and bright eyes had always been such a jolly figure but the years had passed and the elements had taken their toll what with the loss that never went unfelt she had changed significantly the love for her daughter was still there though,

Dancing in her eyes that same love Rebecca had known all her life OK,

She smiled I'll come with you mum,

I've got to start somewhere now,

Haven't I?

The lines on her mother's face softened that's the spirit dear and watching her daughter hobble off to take a long-awaited shower Mrs Tregoran began cleaning up before reaching for her mobile phone stop calling,

She hissed the landline's noisy and it's putting Becky on edge she's not ready yet,

I don't know if she'll ever be ready she waited for a reply but was met with silent indignation well,

Are you going to stop or not?

Still nothing just for now Jake,

I know you're hurting but so is she and that's all that matters at the moment then she threw her phone back into her bag before catching sight of Rebecca hobbling back down the stairs you ready then?

Her daughter was dressed,

That was a good sign but she was unusually pale you've done well love,

But you're still a bit pasty maybe that's enough for today,

I don't want you to overdo things Rebecca's hands shot to her stinging cheek how dare he,

Even now he had the audacity to call her home,

Hadn't she suffered enough?

She sat down on the bottom step and composed herself she needed time alone to think perhaps I'll take a look at that honey cake recipe while you're out she answered,

You never know,

It might end up being even edible ok love,

I won't be long you know where my favourite loaf tin is,

It's never failed me yet and as Rebecca busied herself with the flour and the eggs Mrs Tregorn left,

Immersed in thoughts of Jake Fairmore and the conversation they had had eight weeks earlier I'm so sorry it was her,

All her,

I had no idea she'd sink so low what on earth are you talking about Jake Fairmore?

She'd spat,

You said you'd look after my daughter and you didn't instead she was forced to change jobs and go through all that nonsense with your father's company you knew didn't you you knew he was my father yes Jake I did,

Mr and Mrs Fairmore were good people but they forbid me to say anything they didn't want you being confused that's all and they knew your birth father didn't really have the time for you you should have told me this comment had caught her off guard I'm sorry Jake she said,

We'd promised them our family were close as well you know it shouldn't have been that way but that's just the way it was anyway what do you mean by my Becky sunk so low not Rebecca,

No,

No,

Not Rebecca please let me speak to her I need to know she's okay that's the last thing she needs right now she needs a break from that town and everything connected to it that Paul's been calling too,

What is it with you fellas neither of you can do the right thing by our Becky and I don't understand why Jake sucked the air through his teeth and Mrs Tregoren knew he'd finally got the message why should she sugarcoat it she'd expected so much more of this lad and he'd let her down sorely put in a good word for me please he insisted,

I can't stand the thought of her lying in the road like that his voice trailed off leaving Mrs Tregoren in sympathy for just a moment okay son I'll see what I can do but I can't promise you anything that was two months ago and she'd said nothing since the time just hadn't ever seemed right Rebecca's progress was much slower than she'd hoped meanwhile Jake had called every day since and was becoming a nuisance she tried to be patient but it was time for him to take decisive action not just snivel down the phone if he couldn't see his way to doing that he could stay in Fort Scott Lake as far as she was concerned along with all the rest of them and good riddance to them all and here we are back in Scott Lake town where Jake has just taken another sip of whiskey after a pleasing phone call it no longer burns his throat he's used to it now Jake sat back heavily on his leather sofa so Olivia would be prosecuted would she?

They had CCTV evidence good all the more reason to celebrate that footage must have shown clear intent he could only imagine what was going on in her mind that day the poisonous so and so he didn't bear thinking about but Olivia would never really pay the price would she?

She had half the town in her pocket or in her bed depending on what time of day it was it had taken everything he had not to launch her across the room all those weeks ago when she sat sporting a fresh new handbag and matching lap dog he'd promised her then hell would freeze over before he'd entertain any ideas of her and he'd kept to his word Rebecca dominated Jake's every breath now she consumed everything he did whilst he was awake and everything he said in his sleep the anticipation was killing him telling his father was supposed to make things easier but there'd been such an atmosphere in the days after he confessed he thought it better to leave and avoid stressing the old man anymore as for Olivia she'd certainly been conspicuous in her absence from work doubtless she was still milking father for everything she could get that was usually where his sympathies lie stress,

That's what she'd say had caused her to veer off the road,

Stress and worry about why he had refused to marry her what story she would spin Jake took another long sip before standing up this was a nice flat when all was said and done its view across the mountains was almost panoramic the morning sun flooded into the lounge leaving its brazen kiss on the start of each new day and the mature lime trees lining the street outside brought songs of hope from Thrush and Blackbird but what he liked best of all was that it was his,

Bought and paid for no one could take that away from him it was no surprise Anika and Ahmed were happy when they were here this apartment block was amongst the best in town he checked the bare walls there were marks where once Ahmed's pictures were stuck it was hardly a home yet but if father disowned him he'd make it one why was he torturing himself like this?

That would never happen,

Would it?

But he'd heard nothing since leaving that day it had taken all he had to finally speak his mind then he had no choice but to leave it wasn't right expecting the old man to face that atmosphere when he was recovering from yet another hospital stay but what was done was done with any luck in time his father might just come to see things from his point of view he stood up and walked over to the old piano apparently Rebecca had found it in a charity shop and gifted it to Ahmed,

So he said it had been too heavy to take with him and there she was again,

Rebecca haunting Jake's every thought no one had even been back to collect her things everything next door must still be just the way she left it I wonder he sped to the front door and yanked it open the oriental mat was still there Rebecca's ornate brass knocker still as shiny as a new pin no one had been,

Not in all this time she was never coming back,

Was she?

He lifted the corner of the mat this was ridiculous,

Who did that nowadays?

He lowered it and turned back but that was the point,

Wasn't it?

Rebecca was ridiculous she wasn't like other people she didn't expect the worst of other people this time he lifted the whole thing and there,

Sitting in the same place it had sat for all those weeks was the bright shiny key to Rebecca's front door meanwhile over in Fort Denning,

Rebecca was helping her mother to clear a pathway through the recent snowfall she loved the fresh air it brought life to her cheeks and brilliance back to her eyes you have a rest now mum I've got this she declared as she felt the old energy return she'd always been strange that way the more energy she used,

The more she had to spare no chance of you wearing yourself out any time soon,

Is there?

Mrs Tregoran joked,

Her warm breath dancing in the frosty air none,

Rebecca laughed,

Shoveling faster still now's as good a time as any Mrs Tregoran said to herself as she jumped straight in I got a letter this morning oh yeah?

It's from Denning Primary Rebecca slowed a little okay,

It's about their teacher training programme Rebecca stopped mid-scoop now why would they be sending you letters about that?

Well Mrs MacGrey's still there as you know and we all keep in touch really?

This was no coincidence and Rebecca knew it her mother had been meddling again Reverend Kane's been singing your praises to her but I haven't been to church in yolks this was ridiculous,

Her mother was just trying to get her at it he was waxing lyrical about your help at Sunday school that was ages ago mum things have changed since then you've not changed Becky,

You're still the same girl you always were Rebecca scraped the snow away from her feet she resented the tears that threatened to expose her don't say that I will say it,

Mrs Tregoran persisted just take a look at it will you,

For me her voice caught and Rebecca put down her shovel but I'm not ready yes you are my face,

Only you can see it no mum I can't I'm not ready Rebecca you can,

It's what daddy would have wanted this was a low blow but Mrs Tregoran was getting desperate and as they sat together watching the snow fall Rebecca realised there was no getting away from it she was going to have to move forwards whether she liked it or not Jake sat back and drank in the sweet heady scent he wouldn't stay in the flat for long,

Just a second then he'd leave it wasn't right he knew,

But he was desperate or was that the whiskey talking he was still drinking from the night before weekends are always tough he looked around this was all Rebecca owned in the world just coloured scarves,

Pretty dresses and numerous books not even the bricks and mortar but he was still far from worthy of her he'd made so many mistakes and for what he checked his phone,

No more calls good,

The last one had been enough before he entered her flat his father's secretary had told him in no uncertain terms he was to be present at Cartwright Manor later without fail why didn't father call himself,

He just needed to hear his voice to know it would be ok,

To know he wasn't completely alone in the world later that day he'd see him and sign the house over that would put an end to it and if that didn't prove where his loyalties lie he didn't know what would not that he would compromise his morals again he owed himself and his upbringing that he must stay true to the man he was brought up to be Mr and Mrs Fairmore had been good people he could see that now,

Even if they had made a poor decision by not telling him who his father was they taught him to follow his heart and be humble and that is what he should be,

Even if it meant being alone even if it meant only having a job to his name and he would give everything to that regardless,

He had only ever wanted the best for Cartwright Industries he tugged at the scarf draped across an old ladderback chair it was woven from the smoothest silk and shimmered in the light he ran it through his fingers,

Softly,

Gently and with a telling clump,

A small black book fell to his feet like a child with a guilty secret,

He snatched a glance at the door all was quiet quiet,

Good the book was well used smaller than a regular notebook,

With a soft leather cover that sat comfortably in his large palm Jake stroked the spine as if to connect with its owner just one peep wouldn't hurt he turned the pages guiltily at first,

Absorbed with each new revelation he'd always known Rebecca could draw but not like this this was beautiful a book of revelations there were birds and mountains,

The friendly faces of those who frequented McGinty's bar and the town square,

Ahmed sitting at the piano and the girl who used to work with Rebecca donned in a funny coloured hat he looked closer still at the top of each illustration a date had been ascribed he thought carefully when was it?

A while ago now he flicked back and forth wildly and there it was the very day he'd helped her up from the floor in the foyer of Scott Lake Towers she'd spent a long time on this one these were her most intimate thoughts a celebration of her deepest fantasies this drawing she revered not least of all because the intertwined hands she had depicted so lovingly wore matching rings Jake snatched his glass from the table and stood up he'd been pathetic but it would end now he must do something before it was too late it was unusually bright in the morning room at Cartwright Manor such a large space was difficult to heat but today the shutters had been thrown back and the curtains nipped so the winter rays rushed in it was warm,

Conducive to rest and healing Jake gazed at the large log crackling merrily away in the hearth a faint aroma of cinnamon rolls hung in the air mixed with the best filter coffee father he spoke softly but his voice wavered not an inch he was resolute,

There was no mistaking that ah,

There you are John Cartwright sat up straight on his high wing back chair he had his back to Jake but even so Jake could tell this was the voice of a much younger man what's happened?

He said to himself that doesn't sound like him at all father he walked over quickly to see his father dressed in bright blue walls with a fresh haircut and manicure come and sit with me his father's expression could only be described as relief had he finally seen the light could it really be true?

Jake hardly dared to dream I've missed you son Jake clenched his fists maybe this was the result of Olivia's meddling just a new tactic to get him to give in sit down lad,

You look all spent Jake sat,

But he was no longer beaten he had a plan and was eager to get on with it much has happened since you left Jake I hope you've been okay Jake was speechless,

He was relieved to be back in his father's presence but he wouldn't be counting his chickens he'd learned from experience nothing was ever that easy John Cartwright looked at him through loving eyes it had been a shock coming to terms with how things really were but no sooner had it happened than he felt strangely relieved he'd always known Jake was a good lad and if he was honest with himself he'd long suspected Olivia had a different side to the one she presented to him she must have had for Jake to reject her like that but even so he'd been far from prepared for what transpired with her the night before she'd screamed at the top of her voice like her mother used to do when she didn't get her own way he wasn't prepared for it and found himself gasping for breath and holding his chest this pressure had been building up in him for some time all he'd done was ask her what had happened for Jake to reject her then she'd exploded into a drunken outburst he's a fool and so are you the only reason my mother married you was for your money the girl had obviously been holding that bitterness in for a long time why do you think I've stuck around all this time Olivia had spat you've never really loved me and since your son turned up I'm like a spare part he'd found that hard to swallow of all the things he was,

He wasn't heartless he'd always given Olivia everything she needed including his love okay,

Maybe not the same adoration he'd had for his son but he'd done his best to do the right thing and stay true to her mother's dying wishes it wasn't until his faithful secretary intervened that she stopped he'd been quick to put the record straight and when Olivia finally left John Cartwright had been surprised to hear the truth about the money she'd squandered the court case she'd brought about and the hit and run charges she was now facing it should have been a shock but it was in fact a lightning bulb moment and for the first time in years he'd felt as if he was free from that unsettling feeling which left him unable to sleep he was free from the worries he'd had about his son and the nagging doubts he'd always had about Olivia so much so he'd slept better that last night than he had done in years I should never have let you leave son but here we are,

I know the truth now at last I know the truth why didn't you tell me before?

Jake could not believe what he was hearing what did his father know exactly was it the real truth or some twisted version Olivia had fed him I couldn't father,

I didn't want to hurt you his father said nothing to this there was nothing he could say his son had been willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of his feelings how wrong he had been to put Olivia's feelings first he turned to face him I've thought about what you said you must follow your heart son go and get her,

That girl you couldn't take your eyes off I saw her that day in the foyer I've heard great things about her on the grapevine you only get one life and I don't want you making the same mistakes I made Jake felt sick,

This couldn't be happening he wanted to cry,

To say thank you to say his father meant more to him than anyone apart from Rebecca but the words just wouldn't come he looked into his hands as if the answer was somehow sitting there how could he show what this meant to him without making a fool of himself sensing his emotion his father reached up to the mantelpiece before placing a reassuring hand on his hunched shoulder this is yours son it was an old box,

One Jake had never seen before its significance was immense as are all things handed from father to son he opened it gingerly wishing to savour this moment for as long as he could this was pivotal just the two of them underneath the cartwright shield father and son outside the snow fell softly as the sun beat through the frosty panes at his feet the terriers were peaceful at last safe in the knowledge Jake was back there was no interfering Olivia no fussing nurse just them,

Him and his father his father and him Jake slipped the gold signet ring on his ring finger it was engraved with the initials JC and then the tears fell he couldn't stop them not that his father saw his hand was resting on the mantelpiece as he looked into the flames thank you for coming into my life son he said I'm finally seeing clearly for the first time in years you and me can do some real good with cartwright industry as you know this is the start of a new phase,

A new beginning I've let things slip,

But no more not now I have you and that afternoon he told Jake all that had happened with Olivia as they recovered together safe in the arms of cartwright manor after the turbulent days that passed before and here we are in Fort Denning where Rebecca has just received some wonderful news I'm so happy things have worked out Sam it's going to be amazing well there was no way we could go ahead until you were better I want you to feel comfortable Rebecca and scaling things down suits us both fine Fort Denning's a wonderful place for a wedding and Jamie doesn't want a big affair any more than I do it'll be just the few of us your mum's been so generous to let us celebrate on the farm and Jamie's over the moon with the theme she's a real country girl at heart you know she's even considered wearing her cowboy boots Rebecca smiled she could just see it now Sam turning up in a flamboyant retro number with Jamie by her side in a crisp three-piece suit I must admit it's been lovely having something like this to focus on,

A winter wedding an unboxing day too Mum and I have been so busy already just wait till you see what we've got in store it's going to be the wedding of the century and what better people to organise it I remember just how great the Festival of Lights turned out you got a knack for organising things Rebecca and this is the perfect opportunity to get your teeth in too not that you need much more,

Now you're planning on training to be a teacher congratulations by the way that's the perfect job for you,

Just look how arm it turned out with his piano thanks Sam I've not stopped in the last couple of weeks Mum was right though,

Keeping busy is good for me I can hear it in your voice,

You sound so different I can't wait to see you are you getting nervous?

Yeah,

But Jamie's parents are brilliant I was frightened they wouldn't be on board with the idea at first but us getting married is just what they want they said when we met,

They told me we're the perfect match and they've always dreamed of having two daughters,

Can you believe it I'm so happy Rebecca if only we'd known where we were headed when we sat down together in that basement nearly a year ago at this,

The line went quiet Rebecca,

You still there?

Sam could have kicked herself her and her big mouth she tried her best not to mention anything that could be associated with Jake Fairmore but now here she was,

Sticking her foot right in it guess I'm here we have come a long way that's for sure Rebecca ran her fingers across the long pale line that ran down her cheek over the weeks it had become less and less angry but it would never fade completely the memory of Fort Scott Lake was etched on her whether she liked it or not there's the door,

I'd better go she declared,

Eager to stop this where it started oh,

Ok,

I'll call you at the weekend then about the dress?

Sure,

No problem,

See you then Sam Rebecca sat back breathe,

She said to herself as she took in the space around her it was a large entrance for a log cabin its grand double doors had been set with forged hinges rivets and rungs Henry Tregoren had a great eye for detail even if he had struggled to hang them but heavy wooden doors match the cladding he declared and every respectable log cabin should have a grand entrance Rebecca smiled to herself her father always thought big a prince on pauper's money,

He'd once joked but nothing was ever too much for his family if he could make it,

Or grow it,

It would be theirs oh daddy,

I wish you were here now and there it was again rushing into her chest to bury itself in her demise it was as though every cell shook every muscle lost its strength to the casual observer,

Rebecca's body appeared calm but secretly she was gripping onto the sides of a tiny boat in a tumultuous sea please let this stop she began to count this was home,

Remember,

And everything was just the same as it had always been the rugged stag's head mounted above the double doors that was one father found him asleep up in the mountains when she was little and brought him home as testimony to the glory of the natural world two,

The antique sideboard mother had skrinked and scraped for this after spotting its mahogany sheen in McElroy's window Rebecca knew each one of the carved animals by name,

And had often fancied them come alive to dance in the moonlight ring,

Cast through the stained glass window,

Cut into the far wall three,

The crease in the wallpaper which refused to sit flat,

Four,

The chip in the skirting board where her wheelchair had given it a dig,

Five,

The fruit bowl refilled with fresh winter clementines,

And six the letter rack filling up with Christmas cards she counted the gaps between the floorboards seven,

Eight,

Nine and each knot set deep into the wooden rafters ten,

Eleven,

Twelve and all at once she was back,

Back to reality no more Scots lake towers no more living alone it was over was that Sam?

Mrs Tregoren bustled out of the kitchen her heart shaped face framed with heavy curlers is everything okay?

Yes mum,

Smiled Rebecca weakly Sam is very excited I just hope we can live up to the expectation Mrs Tregoren sat down next to her daughter you're okay love it's not too much for you is it,

Organising the wedding no,

I'm just having a moment that's all she looked into her mother's eyes that new palette suits you the wine colour sets off your green eyes thanks love,

I want to be prepared,

There'll be no time for it when the big day gets closer and I've got a reputation to keep Rebecca looked closer her mother had always been pretty homely and pretty,

Time had not changed that I'll just go and put the kettle on nothing better than a cup of tea to fix things then we'll try some of that organic salmon we got yesterday smoke with cream cheese is what Sam ordered so let's see if we can't exceed her expectations shall we okay mum Mrs Tregoren escaped to the kitchen and thought carefully about what to do next she'd been toying with the idea for some days now Rebecca had come to a crossroads and she needed a reason to stay on the right path these bouts of reflection were becoming more and more frequent they even kept Rebecca awake at night unable to sleep it was time to make the move to change the narrative she'd been to her husband's grave for divine intervention and he'd told her there was only one way to do that so she picked up the phone and checked her missed calls good,

He'd called last night he was still as keen as ever now let's see if that boy would finally put his money where his mouth was over in Fort Scott Lake Cartwright Industries was gearing up for the festive season outside the old town bell struck the hour with unusual clarity and through the vast windows of his first floor office Jake noticed the square had been cleared of the traffic that drowned it out day after day he watched the busy shoppers bustle in and out whilst a group of gruff men hoisted a magnificent pine to standing with an old tow rope fog and frost nipped at the noses of the youngsters stopping to stare whilst billows of chestnut smoke gathered around them Christmas was coming and for just a moment Jake longed to be a little boy again only this time he would be dressed like those boys the boys from Fenmore Prep how different things would have been he'd be chauffeured to school practice rugby at the weekends and spend his holidays on the continent with a rich father and rich friends and yet if he had lived this life he would never have met Rebecca Tregoren coloured or yellow?

Asked John Cartwright as he entered the office to join his son's side coloured said Jake let's brighten this place up a bit shall we the call was made and rainbow bulbs were strung from post to post for the beginning of Advent either side of the grand entrance large wreaths were hung with cinnamon sticks,

Dried fruits and winter berries laced between pine fronds and wine coloured ribbon the Cartwright columns were swathed with red chiffon and hung with large gold bows in father and son's mission to brighten up the square later the town folk would see fair rides and a Christmas show before the resident craft market set up for the season this would be a Christmas to remember not least of all because at last Jake had been given the green light all he needed now was the opportunity he knew Rebecca was fragile and he was ashamed to admit it was partly down to him but he could not afford to dwell on that he must remain confident even if he was terrified she would refuse him and she had so many reasons to he knew that he turned to face his empire he must stay positive it was time to be the man he professed to being and that meant risking rejection again well so be it if that was what it took to make Rebecca realise he was serious that is what he must do it was time not even Olivia could dampen his resolve now she'd been unusually quiet which was a blessing he'd like to think she'd been humbled by her suspended prison sentence but whether or not that was true he had seen neither hide nor hair of her since she'd moved out to the lodge she was obviously counting her blessings and deciding to lie low lest the old man disinherit her completely let Olivia have the house if that's what she thinks right Jake insisted to his father one night not that we need to discuss that now dad that new wardrobe and F-type have taken 20 years off you aye there's life in this old dog yet John Cartwright joked back but he disagreed with his son about the future of Cartwright Manor this was his home he said and Olivia would not be inheriting it he'd still look after her of course he saw little chance of her making a successful marriage let alone a career of her own but she would not be permitted to have anything to do with Cartwright Industries instead she would receive a monthly allowance in Cartwright Lodge so she would no longer have to concern herself with somewhere to live standing on its own acreage a couple of miles away John Cartwright considered it more than fair in the circumstances but Olivia had still complained no matter he'd done the right thing by her mother and now it was time to put the past where it belonged and look to the future with any luck Jake would provide him with many heirs and Cartwright Manor would go on to house many more generations of the Cartwright clan from what Jake had said he had big plans this Christmas all that remained was to see if they came to fruition whatever happened John Cartwright was determined to remain by his son's side every step of the way weeks passed and over in Fort Denning the locals settled in to the routine of clearing driveways,

Checking snow tyres and allowing extra time for any journeys they might take early morning flurries filtered through the air like fine thread woven into silk cloth and by the time the sun reached the highest point in the sky they lay like soft blankets upon the lonely mountain paths and wild twisted roads that wound through the hillsides as far as the eye could see December had passed busily as Decembers generally do and before Rebecca knew it,

Christmas Day was upon the Tregoran household only this time it was a simple affair shared on blankets beneath the tree with a sentimental exchange of handmade gifts and happy memories later that afternoon Mother Tregoran announced the rose turkey and they settled down to a festive film making sure to retire early that night in preparation for Boxing Day and the wedding that lay ahead lying in her bed Rebecca gazed out of her gable window to the mountains beyond the sky was as black as coal but now and then tiny sparks shot through to remind her she was not alone she thanked the heavens for her mother and everything she did,

Especially this Christmas and sent love to her father and his sister reunited once more in the stars gathering to listen tomorrow promised to be a big day so now it was time for Rebecca to rest Boxing Day dawned bright and cold with fresh clusters of icicles that sparkled in the morning sun but no dark clouds just pure white snow perfect no sooner had Rebecca finished her cup of tea than the team arrived to transform her into the bridesmaid Sam was expecting her to be she felt unsure at first it had been some time since she'd worn makeup for fear of any damage it might cause or delay in her healing if the truth be known Rebecca had been too scared to hope she could ever feel like herself again it was only because of the photos on her phone from McGinty's bar she could believe she hadn't always looked this way two long hours later and the ladies were finally satisfied Rebecca had been tugged and straightened pulled and ironed and now she was ready in appearance at least then in walked Mrs Tregoren with a bran muffin looking very much the glamorous host wow mum you look beautiful Rebecca gushed you girls really know what you're doing don't you Mrs Tregoren said nothing instead she sat down next to her daughter and let the tears flow and when at last they stopped for fear of them never being able to stop again Rebecca said now we're going to have to start all over again she handed her mother a tissue and walked over to the large bay window the freestanding mirror was known for its honesty it was time to see what all the tears were about and gazing at the woman who looked back at her Rebecca began to weep too only these were tears of surprise silent painless tears of relief in fact because she really could go on to be a teacher after all and maybe even get married herself one day but let's not get ahead of ourselves she muttered as she gathered together the pink underskirts and frosted tulle Sam was right dusty pink was her colour she straightened the matching bodice and tugged at her long fingerless gloves Rebecca liked the delicate embroidery it sat softly against her pale skin and matched the thin string of freshwater pearls she had inherited from her aunt she shook her head gently to test the long red twists that ran coil-like down her back they had been dressed with tiny jewelled butterflies and coiffure to perfection good everything was now in place time flew by that morning with all the excitement and vivacity one could expect from such an occasion a couple of the neighbours came in to help lay out the food and a couple more to clear the driveway glasses were polished,

Chairs arranged and napkins placed strategically there would be no more than 15 guests which was just as well for it had been a while since Rebecca had seen that many people all in one go but perhaps she could make a go of it now in the sunroom a large bower of crocheted flowers had been erected underneath which Sam and Jamie would exchange vows cream coloured cords were threaded through fine tulle with golden tassels to complement whilst clusters of white roses collected at the peak interwoven with pearls and gold beads this was to be unlike any other wedding tailor made for Sam's quirky style and Jamie's originality and all at once the horse and cart was there with the happy couple along with a cavalcade of special guests the ceremony was a short but joyous one with much laughter and sing song then when all vows were exchanged and pleasantries complete the two brides left for the back porch and the photos which were to be set against the winter backdrop Rebecca watched from inside she was pleased and yet a little sad it was over her best friend was married and she'd been left behind she'd had such big dreams all those months ago in the foyer of Scott Lake Towers but now here she was touching up someone else's display as she watched them smile and wave she plucked a fallen rose from underneath the arch and waved back roses had always been her favourite flowers,

They'd even grown in clusters around her old flat I think you'll find this is more your colour Rebecca voices again,

Now she thought she was over this this isn't real Rebecca,

She said to herself just find a seat and you'll be fine she turned reluctantly to walk back down the temporary aisle everything would be ok as long as she could get to her favourite chair but to her horror there stood Jake Fairmore blocking the way in his thick Celtic coat dusted with a recent snowfall from his long journey all strength left Rebecca's body this couldn't be real could it the room began to close in,

Why couldn't she just forget him she'd done what everyone expected she wobbled,

Buckled then fell backwards into the rose-filled arch Jake leapt forwards,

Desperate to save her from whatever it was she was feeling,

But he was too late oh god,

It's too much for her,

Yelled Mother Tregoren rushing in her mouth agape,

Get her onto the front porch now moving swiftly Jake swept Rebecca up in his arms and carried her to the swing seat overlooking the front drive Rebecca lay motionless and Mrs Tregoren covered her with blankets then held her hand it's ok now love,

She soothed you're ok,

Everything will be ok now Jake sat in shock,

What had just happened if anything Rebecca was always the strong one what was going on,

What had he done he gazed into her upturned face she was so pale yet so beautiful and at that moment he hated himself more than he had ever done watching him closely Mother Tregoren hated him too then in the next breath she gave thanks he would finally put right all he had done wrong and this is why you couldn't see her until now she said shortly,

Before leaving and praying he would get it right this time Jake brushed a wisp of hair away from Rebecca's face and she opened her eyes no she pulled back instinctively,

Get off me Jake I don't need your sympathy she was awake now and struggling to get away she wriggled and writhed but Jake would not let her go sympathy,

You frustrating irritating gift of a woman I don't sympathise with you I love you do you hear me Rebecca I've been an idiot,

A blind fool so much has happened this last year,

It's been a mess but that's no excuse,

I should have been there for you he paused long enough to know she was listening look at me Jake's voice was gruffer than usual he was clearly struggling but Rebecca refused to acknowledge it stop staring she turned away brusquely no Rebecca I won't then her eyes filled with tears which cut Jake to his very core but he bit down hard,

Sat upright and turned his whole body to face her hey,

Come on this is me remember your toothless wonder he waited for the corners of Rebecca's mouth to turn upwards as he hoped they would then brushing the stains from her cheeks he turned her to face him Rebecca Tregaran I've loved you ever since you told me I couldn't fish for toffee I've loved you ever since I saw you talking to the trees on the way to school and I've loved you since the day you played football barefoot because you didn't have time to put your shoes on he looked down at her pretty pink toes who needs shoes anyway she quipped this gave Jake courage he placed his forefinger under her chin and coaxed her face upwards to meet his there has never been anyone for me but you Rebecca please believe that from somewhere deep within Rebecca found the courage to meet his gaze you've had a hard time showing it any man in his right mind would have looked away in shame but Jake Fairmore wasn't thinking straight he was mesmerised the last time they had sat on this swing together he was about to leave Fort Denning for good it seemed like a lifetime away now you're so beautiful he whispered and I've never wanted you more than at this very moment he cupped his warm hand around the nape of Rebecca's neck she pulled back intuitively but Jake held strong but he knew he must be gentle Rebecca was a sacred bird trapped in his cage and if he were not careful he might devour her Rebecca the muscles in his arms were tense,

His gaze so determined had his heart always beat so heavy he needed her and he was here to claim what was his Rebecca closed her eyes and breathed in Jake's thick scent how she'd yearned for him every night since that day in the foyer,

Even though he'd left her confused upset and alone she should fight him,

She should stand her ground and fight him but she no longer had the strength he was here at last and he hadn't shied away from her like she thought he would he hadn't even seemed to notice she was a shadow of what she once was she drank in his breath as it brushed her cheek it was steeped in whiskey and determination,

Torment and betrayal and suddenly she was scared scared he would demand too much was she strong enough?

This was a man in every sense of the word fierce and determined then all at once his soft warm lips met hers gently,

Ever so gently and Rebecca realised she had nothing to fear it was as though he was frightened to hurt her but how wrong he was,

How wrong he had always been now it was she who wanted more she was Rebecca Tregoren and she would have more she had dreamed of this moment for so long he had denied her this for too long the taste of him,

The smell of him,

His fingertips on her skin his glorious masculinity she parted her lips to draw him in she was no longer a caged bird,

She was Rebecca Tregoren and she was free to demand what he should have given her all those months ago free to claim his strength for her own she was afraid then that she might admonish him for his shortcomings but there was nothing to admonish now he was here and he was hers,

Completely,

Utterly and when his muscular chest heaved with excitement in recognition of the fiery temptress he had only ever dreamed of Rebecca dived in once more desperate to receive the love she deserved and the love Jake Fairmore owed her it was over a week before they left for Fort Scott Lake every evening since the wedding was spent at the Imperial every day in the mountains and the garden and by Denning Lake there were but a few moments when Jake left Rebecca's side and when he did,

He yearned for her more than he had ever done as each day passed,

Rebecca became more and more her old self her skin glowed,

Her eyes sparkled and her body came alive with the expectation each night brought Jake was everything she had expected him to be and more and as the days went on and the passion between them grew deeper still she regained the confidence to take charge but she was still nervous when he spoke about returning to meet his father I'm not sure I can go back Jake she said I'm not sure I want to go back at this Jake had held her close stroked her hair and kissed each cheek so delicately she melted once again then we won't my darling we won't do anything you don't want to do we can stay here as long as you want Red,

As long as you want but Rebecca could not ignore the light in Jake's eyes when he spoke of his father and she knew she must be brave for him okay,

Well when I fall will you pick me up?

When I stumble will you tell me you love me?

Then overcome with a sudden burst of emotion her body shook with many sobs Jake carried her to the bed and wrapped her tight in its soft blankets before laying down beside her of course I will you're my life now Rebecca my life,

Without you I will be nothing you were my best friend as a child and you are my best friend now he stroked her hair and held her close as her breath became slower and more shallow then realising it was now or never he said I wanted to do this at the house but anyway he reached into his bag and pulled out a small box I had this made for you Red I have no right to assume you will accept it,

I know that but I'm begging you please make me the happiest man alive he waited patiently for a response but when he looked down into Rebecca's face he saw she had fallen asleep with the weight of it all they left the Imperial the next night and took the 722 to Fort Scott Lake Mrs Tregoren would join them in the next few days but for now it would be just the two of them adjusting to new places and making new memories and as the old seen train trumbled along the long track south Jake Fairmore and Rebecca Tregoren sat as close as two people can their fingers intertwined Rebecca looked down at her wedding finger it held a bright shiny new diamond identical to the one in her little black book I love this design I think I've seen it somewhere before and shooting her a knowing smile Jake replied you may well have done my darling it's one of a kind just like the girl who designed it and as the puffs of steam rose high to join the cool night air Jake Fairmore and Rebecca Tregoren made plans together for all the wonderful things they would achieve as master and mistress of the prestigious Cartwright clan The End

What a treat is this! I love listening to long tracks, >30min, releasing other thoughts and letting go in a flow of imagination ✨️. This story wasn't new to me, I've listened it many times 😊. Being able to relisten without the interrupions a playlist has is so nice! Thank you Stephanie, like always, looking forward for more old Stoic litterature or your own stories 🙏
