Hello.
Welcome to my Bible readings.
In this sleep series,
I will be looking at the gospel according to Luke.
In much of the classic literature I read,
There are references to the Bible and religious teachings.
If we wish to educate ourselves fully in a literary capacity,
It makes sense that we should dive into this for reference.
And so here we are.
It is time for sleep.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose.
That's it.
Then let it out on a long sigh.
This is your time and your space.
A time where you can relax,
Safe in the knowledge there is nothing to do and nowhere to go.
Happy listening.
Chapter 9 When Jesus returned to the other side of the lake,
The people welcomed him because they had all been waiting.
A man arrived who was an official in the local synagogue and he threw himself down at Jesus' feet and begged him to go to his home because his only daughter,
Who was 12 years old,
Was dying.
As Jesus went along,
The people were crowding him from every side.
Among them was a woman who had suffered from severe bleeding for 12 years.
She had spent all she had on doctors,
But no one had been able to cure her.
She came up in the crowd behind Jesus and touched the edge of his cloak.
Who touched me?
Jesus asked,
And her bleeding stopped at once.
Master,
The people are all around you and crowding in on you,
Said Peter,
As everyone denied being the person who touched him.
But Jesus said,
Someone touched me for I knew it when the power left me.
The woman then saw she had been found out,
So she came trembling and threw herself at Jesus' feet.
And there in front of everybody,
She told him why she'd touched him and how she'd been healed.
Jesus said,
My daughter,
Your faith has made you well.
Now you must go in peace.
At the same time he was saying this,
A messenger came from the official's house and told the man that came with Jesus that his daughter had died.
Don't be afraid,
Said Jesus,
Only believe and she will be well.
And when he arrived at the house,
He would not let anyone go in with him except Peter,
John and James,
And the child's father and mother.
Everyone was crying and mourning,
But Jesus said,
Don't cry,
She's not dead.
She is only sleeping.
Then he took her by the hand and called out,
Get up,
My child,
And her life returned.
Her parents were astounded,
But Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what had happened.
Jesus sends out the twelve disciples.
Jesus called the twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority to drive out all the demons and cure diseases.
He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick.
Take nothing with you for the journey,
He said,
No stick,
No beggar's bag,
No food,
No money,
Not even an extra shirt.
Wherever you are welcome,
Stay in the same house until you leave that town.
Wherever people don't welcome you,
Leave and shake the dust off your feet as a warning to them.
So the disciples left and traveled through all the villages,
Preaching the good news and healing people everywhere.
Herod's Confusion When Herod,
The ruler of Galilee,
Heard about the things that were happening,
He was very confused because some people were saying John the Baptist had come back to life.
Others were saying Elijah had appeared,
And still others that one of the prophets from long ago had come back to life also.
Herod said,
I had John's head cut off,
But who is this man I hear these things about?
And he kept trying to see Jesus.
Jesus Feeds a Great Crowd The apostles came back and told Jesus everything they had done.
He took them with him and they went off by themselves to a town called Bethsaida.
When the crowds heard about it,
They followed him and he welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God.
When the sun was beginning to set,
The twelve disciples came to him and said,
Send the people away so they can go to the villages and farms and find food,
Because this is a lonely place.
But Jesus said,
You yourself shall give them something to eat.
But all we have are five loaves and two fish,
They answered.
Do you want us to go and buy food for this whole crowd?
Make the people sit down in groups of about fifty each,
Said Jesus to the disciples.
After the disciples had done so,
Jesus took the five loaves and two fish,
Looked up to heaven,
Thanked God for them,
Broke them and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.
Then they all ate and had enough,
And the disciples took up twelve baskets of what was left over.
Peter's Declaration about Jesus One day when Jesus was praying alone,
The disciples came to him.
Who do the crowds say I am?
He asked.
Some say you're John the Baptist,
They answered.
And what do you say?
Said Jesus.
You are God's Messiah,
Said Peter.
Jesus speaks about suffering and death.
Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell this to anyone.
He also said the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected by the elders,
The chief priests and the teachers of the law.
He will be put to death,
But three days later he will rise again.
And then he said,
Anyone who wants to come with me must forget thyself.
They must take up their cross every day and they must follow me.
For whoever wants to save their own life will lose it,
But whoever loses their life for my sake will save it.
Will the people gain anything if they win the whole world,
But are themselves lost or defeated?
Of course not.
If people are ashamed of me and my teaching,
Then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the Holy Angels.
I assure you there are some here who will not die until they have seen the kingdom of God.
