Sleepy valley. There's a part of the night that most people sleep right through. The slow hour just after midnight. When the path dips into a hollow between the hills. And a whole market wakes up in the dark. Tiny glowing creatures unfold their lanterns. And lay out their wares. And everything they sell is made for sleeping. Tonight you'll wander it with Finn. And let its lights and its soft market hum carry you all the way down into rest. Hello, My dear friend. My name is Jacob. And I'm here to remind you. You've done enough for today. Truly, It is enough. This is a gentle bedtime story about a hidden market that only opens after midnight. Where lullabies come bottled in glass. Dreams are woven on little looms. And fallen stars are sold while they're still warm. You'll follow Finn as he wanders the stall. Learns how the strange and lovely things there are paid for. And finds. At the very end of the night. A small warm place that was waiting just for him. Let it be easy. Let yourself drift as he drifts. So let your body grow heavy now. And let these words carry you down the path. And into the lantern light. There's nowhere you need to be but here. And now. Let us begin. Finn woke in the dark with the feeling that something was happening somewhere without him. He lay still for a while. The way you do when you can't tell yet whether you're awake. The cottage where he'd fallen asleep was warm. The fire down to embers. And through the window. The valley was the deep blue-black it only ever turned in the middle hours. Long after the last light had gone. The stars were out. And somewhere below. Faint and far off. He could hear something he'd never heard in the valley before. A sound like a fair heard from across a field. Like voices. And small bells. And the shuffle of many feet. Soft and round with distance. He got up. He didn't decide to. Exactly. His feet were already carrying him to the door. Outside. The air was cool and smelled of grass and wood smoke. And the sound was clearer now. Drifting up from somewhere down the slope where he'd never thought to look. There was a fold in the land there. Hollow tucked between two hills. Kind of place you'd walk past a hundred times in daylight and never notice. But it wasn't daylight. And in the dark. The hollow was glowing. Finn followed the path down. The closer he came. The more the glow broke apart into a thousand small lights. Lanterns. He saw now. Hundreds of them. Strung on cords. And balanced on poles. And held in tiny hands. Each one a different warm color. Amber. And honey. The pale gold of a candle seen through a curtain. They hung in long, Swaying lines down a little lane that hadn't been there yesterday. Beneath them. The market was alive. It was full of creatures he had no names for. Small ones. Mostly. None of them taller than his knee. Some were round and soft as dumplings. With lanterns balanced on their heads. Some were long and slender. Moving the way smoke moves. Unhurried and curling. Were little ones with moth wings folded down their backs and big lantern eyes. And round-bellied ones who rolled more than walked. And one or two so faint they were more glow than body. Drifting between the stalls like the light was simply taking a walk. None of them seemed surprised to see a boy. One looked up at him. Blinked its lantern eyes slowly. And went back to arranging its table. Finn stepped into the lane. And the sound folded around him. That soft market murmur. Voices that weren't quite words. The chime of tiny bells. The shuffle and rustle of a hundred small transactions. It was the warmest sound he'd ever stood inside of. He fell. Somehow. That he could have fallen asleep right there on his feet. Just listening to it. The stalls went on further than he could see. At the first one. A creature with long, Careful fingers was weaving something on a loom no bigger than a book. The threads it pulled weren't thread at all. They shimmered and shifted color as they crossed. When Finn leaned close, He understood that he was looking at a dream being made. Woven row by row like cloth. The little weaver held one up to show him. A square of soft shifting light. A dream of flying low over warm water. You picked the pattern. It seemed to say. And you wore it to sleep. And that was the dream you had. Finn could have stood there all night watching the colors move. Little further on. The lane opened wider. And the air turned sweet and faintly cool. A round creature sat behind a table covered in glass bottles. And each bottle held a light that drifted and settled like something alive. When Finn came near. It lifted one and eased the corpse. And the softest sound spilled out. A few notes of a lullaby. A melody he was sure he'd known once and forgotten. The creature corked it again quickly. The way you'd close a door against the cold. Holding the song safe inside. Bottled Lullabies lined up by the dozen. Each one glowing a little while you slept. And singing you down. One stall sold moonlight by the jar. Soft enough to read by. The seller said without saying anything. Soft enough to sleep under. The next was heaped with soft gray somethings that turned out to be afternoon naps. Folded up small like handkerchiefs. Each one promising a warm half hour you could open whenever you needed it. A little further along. A creature sold the smell of rain on Warmstone. And beside it, Another sold the particular heaviness your eyelids get when you've stayed up too late. And finally. . . Finally give in. And one small cellar had nothing on its table at all. And when Finn looked closer, He saw that it sold the feeling of being tucked in by someone who loves you. It kept the feeling in a folded blanket. Would only sell it to someone who had somewhere safe to use it. Finn walked slowly. The lane curve. Open. And curved again. And every few steps there was something new to wonder at. And the warm sound of the market moved with him the whole way. Never loud. Never far. He wasn't tired in the way that aches. He was tired in the way a long good day leaves you. The kind of tired that's halfway to a dream already. And then Finn noticed the prices. Nobody was paying with coins. At the lullaby stall. A tall smoke-colored creature leaned in. And hummed a few notes of a tune. The cellar caught the hum on a length of thread. And tied it off. Satisfied. And hand it over a bottle. At the dream loom. A customer paid with the color of a happy memory. And Finn watched a thin ribbon of warm gold lift out of the creature. And drift into a little jar. The creature kept its memory. It had only given away the color. Further down. Someone paid with a laugh they'd been saving. Each stall wanted something different. And none of it was anything you could hold. Finn's hands went to his pockets. He didn't have a hum ready. Or a memory he knew how to give. But he had what he always had. Few smooth stones he'd picked up on the ridge because they felt good in his hand. A curl of bark. And two small seashells he'd carried so long he'd forgotten where he found them. He held them out. Unsure. To a little moth-winged creature at a stall near the end of the lane. The creature's lantern eyes went wide and bright. As though he'd offered it treasure. It turned each stone over with great care. Press one shell to where its ear might be and listen. And gave us slow. Delighted nod. In the market. It seemed. A thing was worth what it had meant to you. The stones he'd carried for no reason were worth a great deal. He had wandered nearly to the end of the lane when he saw the last stall. And stop. It was set a little apart from the rest. And it glowed brighter than any of them. With a light that pulsed slow and warm like something breathing. On a bed of dark cloth lay perhaps a dozen stars. Real ones. Fallen Ones. Each the size of an apple. Still gently cooling. Throwing soft gold light up onto the face of the old creature who kept them. They were warm. Finn could feel the warmth from where he stood. The way you feel a hearth before you reach it. The keeper of the stars looked at him for a long moment. Then it tilted its head toward the stones and shells still cupped in his hands. And waited. Finn understood that this would cost more than stones. So he leaned in. And he gave what the keeper seemed to be asking for. Whispered a secret into one of his seashells. A small true thing he'd never said out loud to anyone. And the keeper took the shell. And held it gently to the light. And the secret was safe there now. Kept and not spent. And then. . . Because it felt right. Finn gave one thing more. An old wish he'd carried since he was small. And had slowly grown past. A wish he didn't need anymore. He felt it leave him. Light as a breath. And he wasn't sorry to see it go. The keeper of the stars chose a star. The warmest one. And laid it in Finn's open hands. It was heavier than he expected. Softer. Like holding a sleeping animal. The warmth went straight up his arms. And into his chest. He stood there holding his star. Not at all sure what a boy was supposed to do with such a thing. And as he stood there. Something small and warm pressed itself against his ankle. It was a fox. A little one. No bigger than the lanterns. It glowed faintly gold from the inside. The way the star did. It looked up at him. Then at the star. Then turned a slow circle around his feet. And sad. Leaning its small weight against him as though it had decided something. It had. Thin thought. Chosen him. Or chosen the star. And him along with it. The keeper of the stars made a soft sound that might have been a laugh. And pointed. With one long finger. Away from the lane. To the edge of the market. Where the lantern light thinned out. And the grass began. There was a hollow in the slope just the right size for a small boy and a smaller fox. The keeper seemed to be telling him. A star isn't a thing you carry home. It's a thing you rest beside. So Finn walked to the edge of the lights. And the fox trotted with him. He climbed into the little hollow in the warm grass. He set the star down in front of him. And it sank into the hollow and glowed. And its warmth spread up through the ground. And through his clothes. Into him. The way the sun warms a stone that holds the heat long after. The fox curled into the crook of his knees. And let out a long breath. And went still. And the market kept on behind him. The bells. The soft murmur. The rustle of small wares changing small hands. But it was further away now. Gentler. A sound to sleep to and not to follow. Finn lay back in the warm grass with his star glowing beside him. And his fox breathing against him. And above him, The whole sky was out. Every star in its place. And one of them. He thought sleepily. Looked newly empty. As though it had lent something to the market below. And was waiting. Patient and unworried. To get it back. The lantern swayed. The lullaby bottles glowed in their rows. Somewhere. Gently. One of them must have come uncorked. Because a melody had begun to drift through the hollow. Soft and low. The one he was sure he'd known once. The fox was already asleep. The star was warm. And the night. Which had woken him for this. Now had nothing left to ask of him. He closed his eyes. The market hummed him down. And thin slaps. Warm and held and unhurried. In the fold of the hills where the lights would burn softly until morning.
