The Well of Will.
Once upon a time,
In a peaceful and beautiful land brimming with life,
There was a village where happiness dwelled among its contented residents.
Playful animals and vibrant plants added color to the village,
While the houses,
Though close in proximity,
Provided ample space for each family to carry out their daily tasks without encroaching on their neighbors.
Each house possessed its own well,
A source of clean,
Fresh water that seemed endless.
In this harmonious community,
People were not only at peace with one another but also shared everything,
Spending much of their time together.
With the land generously providing for their needs,
They found themselves with an abundance of free time which they joyously spent reveling in each other's company.
Grand celebrations that lasted for days became a regular occurrence.
Day and night,
The air resonated with melodious tunes,
Laughter,
And the joyous footsteps of dancing feet.
Their hearts overflowed with love and friendship as they celebrated life.
Worries and concerns were far from their minds as their days were filled with mirth and bliss.
Everywhere you turned,
The streets echoed with people singing,
Music playing,
And children delighting in the whiting and the wonders of fun.
Such was their happiness that even the animals frolicked with glee,
Happily bounding through the houses and gardens a testament to their vitality and freedom.
The villagers were a selfless lot,
Constantly sharing whatever they had with one another,
Ensuring that no one ever went without.
Inspired by their parents' generosity,
Even the children grew up embracing the spirit of sharing.
As generations passed,
The inhabitants of this joyous village felt an ever-deepening sense of belonging,
Knowing they could rely on their neighbors for assistance whenever they faced challenges or needed a helping hand.
In one of the village's houses,
A family resided.
Mother,
Father,
And three children.
They were no different from the rest,
Finding joy in offering their help and sharing whatever they possessed with their fellow families.
As the parties grew in size,
It became commonplace for the hosts to quickly exhaust their food and drink supplies.
However,
This was never a concern as they knew they would soon receive invitations to other gatherings,
Where they would find an abundance of sustenance.
And so it went on,
The villagers continually giving and receiving.
One day,
A popular neighbor known for hosting the grandest parties approached this particular family.
He requested water,
Explaining that his own well had run dry after his recent festivities.
Without hesitation,
The family grabbed buckets,
Filled them with water from their own well,
And assisted their neighbor in carrying them home.
The next day and the following days thereafter,
The neighbor returned,
Seeking water since his well remained empty.
This situation persisted for several weeks.
Observing the neighbor's predicament,
The father pondered on how they could alleviate his daily struggle of fetching water.
That night,
He proposed a solution to his family,
A plan to install pipes that would allow them to share their well's water directly with their neighbor.
After all,
Their well had always been a reliable source,
And it seemed only fitting to extend its bounty to their popular neighbor.
The entire family eagerly agreed,
And the next day,
They embarked on the project.
With the help of other kind-hearted neighbors,
The construction was swiftly completed in less than a week.
The problem was resolved,
And to celebrate,
The village threw a grand feast.
The entire community joined in the festivities,
Offering heartfelt appreciation to the family who had selflessly shared their well,
Contributing to the greater good.
As life returned to its familiar rhythm,
The joyous celebrations continued,
And the well continued to provide water to both families,
Fostering a sense of unity and harmony within the village.
In the following weeks,
The family's well gradually began to produce less and less water.
Consequently,
They had to approach their neighbors,
Humbly requesting a small amount of water.
Naturally,
Their kind-hearted friends readily agreed,
Happy to support the family who had selflessly shared their own water through the piping system,
Benefiting the entire community.
However,
The family's water requirements grew with each passing day,
As their well continued to provide diminishing amounts.
This time,
The family found themselves in need of assistance.
Thankfully,
The solution was straightforward.
They needed to replicate the previous pipe system they had collectively built.
This would ensure effortless sharing of water among families.
Once the task was completed,
Normalcy returned,
And the family felt not only grateful,
But also proud that they had conceived the idea of more efficiently sharing water through the piping system.
During dinner,
They discussed this achievement and applauded the father for his ingenious solution,
Which not only benefited them,
But also offered potential solutions for future instances of wells running dry.
They didn't have to wait long for that situation to arise.
A few months later,
Every well connected to the piping system began to dry up.
As the water was shared with an increasing number of households,
The drying process accelerated each time.
By now,
The village had undergone a noticeable transformation.
Music and singing were no longer as prevalent,
And the streets had become dirtier,
Crisscrossed by complex pipe systems.
Parties became smaller and centered around the few remaining wells with water.
The mother was the first to express concern,
Questioning the father about what they would do if the situation continued to worsen.
The children wondered if it was possible to construct additional wells.
However,
The father,
Like everyone else in the village,
Lacked expertise on the matter.
The wells had been built many generations ago,
And the knowledge of locating suitable spots to dig for water had been lost over time.
It seemed there were no alternatives other than to continue constructing piping systems to share the functioning wells.
That night,
The mother and father engaged in a thoughtful discussion and concluded that they needed help from outside the village.
However,
Nobody had ever ventured beyond their familiar surroundings.
Little was known about the land beyond the immediate vicinity of the village,
As there had been no need to explore it before.
They were uncertain about what they should seek or where to look.
During that night,
The father had a vivid dream of his childhood.
He reminisced about sitting attentively as his great-grandfather shared captivating stories.
One tale stood out.
A narrative about a distant land where a powerful wizard resided.
The wizard was described as tall,
With sun-kissed skin,
A long beard,
And a majestic,
Towering hat.
According to ancient legends,
He was believed to be the village's founding figure,
A benevolent and generous wizard.
It was said that upon realizing the villagers had everything they required,
He set out on a journey to aid others in need of his assistance.
And so,
The village,
With its wells and the surrounding nature,
Became the lasting legacy of the wizard in that land.
Although he never returned to the village,
Wandering travelers shared tales of his noble deeds in distant lands.
These were the stories passed down by the great-grandfather.
When the father woke up from his dream,
An idea sparked in his mind.
If the wizard,
Known for his power and selflessness,
Was still alive,
He would surely be willing to assist the village he had founded.
The mother also recalled hearing these stories from her grandparents,
And together they devised a plan to save their village.
Their proposal was to assemble a group of courageous villagers to embark on a quest in search of the wizard.
They shared their plan with the neighbors at the next gathering,
But most were unwilling to take action,
Believing that waiting for the situation to improve on its own was sufficient.
They saw no reason to risk seeking a solution elsewhere when the village had always provided for them and would hopefully continue to do so.
Alone once again,
The family deliberated on their next course of action.
After a lengthy discussion,
They made a decision to send someone from their own family to search for the wizard.
The eldest child,
Now a teenager,
Immediately volunteered.
While initially uncertain if he was ready for such a task,
The parents concluded that neither of his younger siblings was old enough,
And the father was needed to assist with the construction of the pipes,
And the mother to take care of his younger siblings.
Reluctantly,
They agreed it was the best course of action.
The following day,
The teenager departed,
Glancing back at his family gathered in front of their home,
Bidding him farewell.
The mother wept,
And the younger children were saddened by their brother's departure.
The father,
Though filled with sorrow,
Looked at him with eyes shining with pride as he watched his son vanish down the road.
People shook their heads as they observed the young adventurer deeming his quest unnecessary and risky for someone so young.
Nevertheless,
They waved at him,
Offering well wishes and respecting his choice,
Even if they believed it to be unnecessary.
The journey proved challenging from the very beginning.
The teenager had never ventured beyond his village before.
However,
He didn't have the luxury of feeling homesick.
He had to focus on survival and remain committed to his mission of finding the wizard.
Traveling from village to village,
He sought out the oldest individuals,
Hoping to uncover more information about the legendary wizard.
Along the way,
He discovered that life outside his village was markedly different.
People there didn't share as freely as his family and neighbors did.
In fact,
It appeared they made great efforts to keep things for themselves,
Resulting in disparities where some had more than others.
It seemed they had to work diligently to make ends meet.
The teenager soon realized that many things he had taken for granted in his village were not commonplace elsewhere.
Even if those things could be found,
They were not easily obtained.
Only the most driven individuals,
And not even all of them,
Managed to achieve their desired outcomes.
These observations inspired him.
Whenever he encountered obstacles and felt like giving up on his quest,
He pressed on,
Visiting the next village,
And then the next.
There were many instances when he went for months without hearing any mention of the famous wizard.
Nevertheless,
He persisted,
Thinking of his family back home.
Months turned into seasons as he continued his search.
Meanwhile,
Back in the village,
The transformation was drastic.
The once familiar streets had become an intricate maze of pipes and pumps,
Making navigation treacherous.
The weight of silence hung in the air,
Matched only by the weight of despair.
The vibrant colors of nature had faded,
Leaving behind a desolate landscape.
The cheerful flowers had vanished,
Followed by the withering yellow grass,
Which clung desperately to the remaining water sources.
Some villagers and animals had fled,
Only to return quickly,
Unable to adapt to life outside the village.
A few preferred to face their demise rather than abandon their home.
Those who remained struggled with their diminishing water supply,
Their energy dwindling along with their hopes.
The fortunate few who needed to work on the piping system,
Like the dad,
Received a small ration of water each day,
Which he shared with his family,
Reserving only the bare minimum for his own survival.
Attempts were made to dig new wells,
But without the knowledge or expertise,
They were futile.
It seemed nobody had the will to dig deep enough to find water.
The village became a hazardous place,
Riddled with deep holes and intricate pipe networks,
Making it dangerous to navigate,
Especially at night.
Morale hit rock bottom,
And the villagers lost faith in any chance of salvation.
The mom and dad carried the additional burden of guilt,
For it was their decision to send their eldest son into the unknown,
A decision that seemed to have led to his disappearance.
They often awoke in the middle of the night,
Haunted by thoughts of his fate,
Convinced that he was either dead or worse,
As otherwise he would have surely returned by now.
Another day of suffering neared its end,
As the sun cast its final rays upon the village.
The dad,
Like every evening,
Cast a desperate gaze upon the streets,
Yearning for a miracle to save them all.
Yet,
Despite his unwavering hope over the passing days,
Weeks and seasons,
Nothing had changed.
However,
On that fateful day,
A glimmer of hope emerged.
In the distance,
The dad noticed a figure moving along the road.
He strained his tired and dehydrated eyes,
Fixated on the approaching shape,
Paddling the encroaching darkness.
Doubting himself because of his own state,
But filled with a flicker of excitement,
He called his two children and asked if they too saw the figure.
With youthful eyes,
They confirmed the sighting,
Discerning a tall man in the distance.
The man appeared even taller due to the large hat adorning his head.
As he drew nearer,
The last remnants of daylight illuminated his long beard.
The children and the dad couldn't believe their eyes.
The long-awaited day had finally arrived.
They instinctively searched for their older brother nearby,
But the man stood alone.
With each step closer,
He seemed to vanish,
As if the earth had swallowed him whole.
The children and their dad exchanged glances,
As though awakening from a dreadful nightmare.
Judging by their expressions,
It was evident that they couldn't have shared the same hallucination simultaneously.
Realizing this synchronously,
They wordlessly sprinted towards the spot on the road where they had last encountered the wizard.
Having worked on the pipes every day,
The road had become ingrained in their memory.
Despite the scarce light,
They swiftly reached the location where they believed they had seen him.
Scanning their surroundings,
They were immediately captivated by growling sounds emanating from below.
Peering downwards,
Though unable to discern him clearly,
They comprehended that the wizard was trapped.
It appeared he had stumbled over one of the pipes and tumbled into one of the deepest excavated holes in their search for water.
Without hesitation,
The dad and the kids descended into the hole.
Upon discovering the wizard,
His agony rendered him unable to utter a single word.
As they moved about him in the darkness,
Attempting to assist him,
They soon realized that rocks and pipes had fallen,
Entrapping parts of his body.
Urging him to hold on,
They swiftly retrieved the dad's tools from their home and commenced digging fervently to free him.
They dug with an intensity as though their lives depended on it,
Which in a way,
They did.
If they rescued the wizard,
He would then save their village.
After what felt like an eternity,
They drew nearer and nearer to him through their incessant digging.
Suddenly,
They heard him emit a noise louder than the preceding growling.
A shiver ran down the dad's spine as his hands became damp,
Momentarily thinking that,
In their haste,
He had inadvertently injured the wizard with one of his tools.
But as he stood paralyzed by the thought,
The children discovered their own hands and knees were wet too.
They could hardly believe it.
The more they felt it,
The more fervently they dug.
Their voices erupting in jubilation.
Water,
Water.
They embraced the wizard,
Now freed from the rocks,
Although silent and motionless,
And carried him out of the hole,
Bringing him back home to aid in his recovery from the fall.
The mom had been waiting at the door ever since they had returned to retrieve the tools.
Observing the wizard being carried inside by her mud-covered,
Dripping wet children and husband,
She directed them to place him in their oldest son's bed so she could clean and nourish him.
The dad was exhausted,
Barely mustering the strength to inform the mom about their discovery of the water source.
Just as they had hoped the wizard had come to their rescue,
This also kindled their optimism about uncovering the fate of their missing brother.
How else would the wizard have known they needed help if he hadn't encountered him?
While the dad and children went to cleanse themselves,
The mom soaked a clean piece of cloth in the last remaining water at the bottom of a bucket.
She carefully wiped away the grime from the wizard's face,
Proceeding slowly and gently,
Mindful not to cause any harm.
Starting with his forehead,
She gradually continued,
Finally reaching his eyelids.
At that moment,
His eyes fluttered open,
And he seemed to smile upon seeing her.
The mom's heart skipped a beat.
No amount of mud,
Darkness,
Or elapsed time could prevent a mother from recognizing her own son's eyes.
