On this morning,
As we awaken to this new day,
As we stretch ourselves into awareness,
Let us look about our world and give thanks to all those who offer us their care.
This cup of coffee in my hands,
Who grew the beans,
Fertilized the fields,
Drove the trucks,
Wove the packaging,
So much of the work done before dawn as I slept.
How many hundreds of thousands replicated in such tasks.
Those who work the fields,
Build and care for the machinery,
Complete the payrolls,
Clean the floors and the bathrooms.
Here in this web of care,
We can breathe easily.
We,
Among the fortunate,
Can rest in knowing that the lights will come on,
That the traffic will flow,
That the food will be delivered to our stores.
We are caught in an inescapable web of mutuality,
As Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
Said.
With that word caught implying care,
Someone or something has caught us,
Impeded our fall.
Let us pause then for 30 seconds and rest in awareness of the web of care woven by countless thousands that maintains and provides for us all.
On this morning,
As we awaken to this new day,
As we stretch ourselves into awareness,
Let us look about our world and give thanks to the web of mutuality which provides us care.
