From Earth's surface,

The Belt of Orion is one of the most easily recognisable star constellations in our night sky.

You will see the vast multi-coloured cloud of gas and dust.

This is what gives the nebula its form and shape.

A large diaphanous cocoon where thousands of new stars and possible solar systems are being born.
At our current distance,
We are still many hundreds of light years away from the nebula.

The diffuse diameter of the nebula itself is approximately 24 light years across.
At its centre,
A region of only four light years,
You are witnessing the formation of thousands of stars.

It is the culmination of gases and dust created during this process that give the nebula its opalescent colours of pinkish red,
Blue and green.
The dense cluster of light coloured dust and gases at the centre is where the trapezium constellation is found.
Originally thought to comprise of only four stars,
We know today that this area is in fact made up of many more stars.
You may also see the less brightly coloured stars towards the outer regions of the nebula.
These are known as brown dwarfs,
Stars that have not quite made it to full formation.
They shimmer dimly with a brownish red hue.
