Welcome to episode 56 of Bite-Sized Blessings.
In this episode I discuss Vine Deloria Jr.
,
Who recently passed away.
He was an incredible and intelligent theologian,
Philosopher,
Native American rights activist,
And writer.
Several of his books I think should be required reading.
God is Red,
Custer Died for Your Sins,
And finally,
The World We Used to Live In.
I strongly urge everyone who listens to this podcast to buy The World We Used to Live In.
In this episode,
Marty talks about meeting Grandfather Samu,
Who is a medicine man in California.
Marty also briefly discusses the miracles he witnessed Grandfather Samu do.
For more of an idea of what this looks like,
I urge you to buy The World We Used to Live In.
It is potent,
Magical,
And wise,
And really opened my eyes to the fact that there is much more going on in our reality than we could ever hope to understand.
And now,
Episode 56 of Bite-Sized Blessings.
Well,
The night before I got really,
Really worried,
And I kept walking up and down my apartment and praying,
And saying,
God,
You gotta help these kids.
Yeah,
Really something has to be done.
And it was,
I went into a deep meditation of saying,
Something has to be done,
God.
And I was literally up all night.
So the next morning when I came to the house,
I went into the garage,
Catherine and Ira was in the kitchen making me a cup of coffee.
I went in into the garage,
And again,
Picture hundreds and hundreds of boxes,
And every box is full of envelopes and papers.
And I don't know what totally,
But something told me to reach in your hand,
Reach in this one box,
A little voice,
And pull out an envelope.
And I did.
And inside that envelope was $5,
000 cash.
I'm a real estate broker.
That's my occupation.
But I really believe that you can manifest anything you want at any time.
And I also believe that in my life,
My life is consists of magic,
Miracles,
And love and joy.
And that's been my philosophy all through my life.
When I was in my teens,
I had a heart condition,
And the doctor said I needed an operation.
This is like,
I'm 74,
This is like,
Wow,
I was 14,
15.
So that's a long time ago.
And I said,
No,
I really don't want to be operating in my heart.
And they said,
Well,
You know,
Chances are you you won't do well,
You're probably 2021.
That could be it.
And I said no,
And my mother said no,
And we prayed.
And then I never had an operation.
We went to another doctor.
And he goes,
Oh,
You don't need an operation.
There's really nothing wrong with your heart.
But it was it was an interesting time too.
My father was a very kind and gentleman if he was not drinking.
But he was an alcoholic because of what he saw in the wall.
And he described that to me and that was horrific.
But he had a machine shop.
And he did things in a machine shop that no other person could do.
He had his own business.
And he had a horrific life.
I mean,
So his father died.
It was in 1980.
In 1918,
There was Spanish flu.
And I killed two of his sisters,
Two of my aunts,
He just,
My grandfather was paralyzed from the waist down,
He took care of him.
And same thing with my mother.
My mother,
Back then in Boston,
Growing up in Boston,
During the depression,
They had a really tough,
I mean,
They had no food,
No heat in the house.
So that then progress a little better.
But they were very kind in their own way.
I mean,
If somebody if somebody ever wanted to something for my family,
They came to my dad and he gave it to them any money or anything.
Your dad sounds a little bit like an artist in that machine shop.
He was described one time by an artist named Paul Chico Choco,
A well known artist in Atlanta that that he said,
You know,
Marty and my brother Tom say,
Your dad is an artist.
He sees what he does is incredible.
I think people don't often think of machine shops as being artists studios,
But I think you can find art in lots of different places.
Yes,
You can.
I remember once I went to this is like,
I think I was six or seven years old.
And it was with a small shop in like in the woods outside of Boston back then it was was like mostly all woods now is all as a city.
We lived in a town called Braintree.
And there's a little small shop and every Friday,
He my dad used to play poker with the guys and smoke a smoke cigars and drink beer.
And there's one Friday night,
You know,
You babysit.
So I went into the shop.
And at that time,
He had the contract to do the hydraulic components on the north of the northern submarine.
And so he said,
Well,
Come over here,
Son.
So he put me to the box,
A wooden box,
Put it on the floor,
Says stay on the get on the box.
And and he was a grinding machine.
And he put the piston right into the machine.
He said now turn this dial,
One dial and then marked it with a red mark.
And then another remark,
You start here,
And then go over here.
Stop over there.
Don't go past this red mark.
Then he goes didn't take this handle,
Turn it to this red mark.
He said okay.
And I was just like there was no protective shield.
I just put my head down.
And I did it grinding the wood grinding wheel goes with all sparks and sprayed and was great.
And go Oh,
Good,
Good,
Good,
Good.
Well,
Now you do you you do this like 10 or 15.
You see you're gonna mark and you got to count to 10.
You say you know the color?
I see I know the constant circles.
So it goes back and plays poker,
Drinking beer with the guys.
What I'm doing to work 15 minutes later,
He comes back.
This is great.
You did a great job.
Takes another person,
Put the person in that dude.
And I ground the hydraulic components,
The pistons for the northern submarine,
And the A's are seven.
So years later,
Like 20 years,
15,
16 years later,
Him and I used to go fishing.
I've been named and we're fishing on our lake and the boat as anything.
And I hate that.
I wonder if those sailors ever knew that a 70 year old 70 year old kid ground the hydraulic pistons for the northern submarine if those sailors would actually go on the boat.
And he looked at me he goes,
I wouldn't.
I grew up as a Catholic.
And even though my parents never went to church,
They always send me to church and my brother,
My sister.
But I just read a lot on different spiritual books.
In fact,
I read on them.
You know,
It's another interesting story.
One day I was having a fight with my parents.
And I got really,
Really angry.
And I went,
Got in my car and I drove from Boston to the end of Cape Cod,
Providence Town.
And it was one of these dark,
Raining days.
And I went into the town and there was a bookstore.
And inside the bookstore,
There was like this bottom shelf.
And I reached in and took out this one book.
And it was like full of dust.
I honestly got it.
And I actually removed the dust off the book.
And it was called The Feet of the Master by Krista Murty.
So I,
It was like only 80 pages.
So I read the book.
And about two,
Three years later,
I'm driving across the country,
Where my girlfriend at the time,
And we stopped in Ojai.
And who was speaking?
Krista Murty.
And then I just followed his teachings for about four or five years.
And I just ended up in Santa Barbara.
Many years ago,
I actually met a man named Grandfather Samu.
Now this is part of the story.
This will come into the story a little bit later on.
But it's really important.
And he was,
Is a true mass Indian.
We call him medicine man.
Native Americans will call him grandfather.
And the man is,
It just was unbelievable in his philosophy,
His thinking.
And I've seen miracles that he has done over time,
Over years.
But one day,
In real estate,
I was prospecting.
And I came across a man living in San Diego.
My office is in Santa Barbara and Carpentaria,
Which is the distance from Carpentaria to San Diego is about 250,
300 miles.
And he wanted to list his home in Carpentaria.
And it was a three bedroom,
Two bath home.
And he said,
At that time,
He was maybe in his mid 80s.
And just by talking to him,
I knew that he was probably not really a nice guy.
It was always like,
Grumpy,
Mean spirited.
And he said,
I want to sell the home.
But inside a home,
My son and daughter is living inside this home.
And they pay me very little rent.
And I really can't stand them.
I really hate my children.
And I said,
Oh,
Wow.
He said,
I'm a little slow,
That's challenge.
They've been a drain on my life all my life.
All my life,
I've been taking care of them.
And they're going to give you a hard time.
When you go to sell my house,
They will probably prevent you from selling my house.
And I said,
Well,
Why don't I just go over there,
Introduce myself to to your kids.
And he said,
I have a daughter,
Her name is Catherine.
And my son is Earl.
And they're very little,
He used the word slow.
And that was a mean thing to say about his kids.
So I went over,
Knocked on the door,
And no one answered.
And I came back over and over again,
I kept knocking on the door.
And then about two or three,
Four days into this predicate inside the home,
I noticed that the drapes was just just,
You know,
Little open a little bit,
Somebody was peeking at me.
And then I kept knocking.
And then eventually the door was open.
And I met Catherine and Earl,
The two nicest people that you ever wanted to meet your whole life.
The sweet,
Just super kind and kind of nice.
And they were telling me the how mean the dad was to them over the years.
And they were living on disability insurance,
And paying him pretty much most of the money they were coming in from the state to him for rent.
And I told him that I said,
Look,
Your dad wants to sell this house.
And they they knew it was coming.
And they said,
Okay,
We won't stop you,
We will do everything we can to make it work.
And they did.
They were just wonderful people.
They were just so kind and so generous.
Now,
The house was three bedrooms,
One bedroom Earl was living in and one bedroom Catherine was living in.
The other bedroom was full of boxes,
Right from the floor to the ceiling of boxes.
And in the garage,
The two car garage,
There must have been like 2000 boxes full of papers and envelopes.
And the father used to have his own business as a grocery store.
So he kept all the receipts,
He kept everything in these boxes.
And it was packed in a garage and into the bedroom.
So eventually an offer did come in.
And the offer was accepted with a 30 day escrow.
So I called the father up the my client from San Diego.
And I said,
You have to come down and there are some paperwork that you have to sign.
And he said,
Oh,
Okay,
He will come down.
And he said,
I'm but I want,
I want these kids out of my sight.
I want them out of the house.
So I said,
Well,
They really have no place to go.
And we just,
I'm not going to put them on the street.
We're going to have to make some type of arrangements.
And he got very angry with me.
I mean,
Said,
Oh,
I'm going to sue you,
You work for me,
You know,
And it got really mean,
Got really nasty at me.
I said,
Well,
Why don't you come down?
And we can talk about it.
And in the meantime,
I said,
You got a lot of boxes here.
There's yours.
And he said,
Well,
Why don't I just come down?
He came down with with two of his friends.
And I swear to God,
I mean,
The two friends,
There were two women,
And they,
They should have belonged in the in,
In German Nazis,
Back then,
Because they were like the Gestapo.
They came in,
The three of them came in,
Opened the door,
And they were,
I mean,
It was like so mean,
Mean to everybody,
Yelling at them yelling at me.
And I said,
Well,
We need,
We're not going to put them out on the street,
We're going to have to help them financially.
And it was,
It was like a big power struggle.
But he finally agreed to give them roughly about 1500 dollars to,
To move out to find another place to live.
And he said that would be your responsibility,
Pointing at me,
To find them another place to live.
I said,
Okay,
I can I can do that.
I will help them whatever I can.
And then I said,
What about all these boxes?
All these,
These boxes full of papers?
And he said,
What is yours?
I don't want them.
You do what you want.
You want to throw them in the trash,
Throw them in the trash.
Are those boxes are you?
And he pointed to me,
He said,
Those is all your responsibility.
I give these boxes to you.
That's okay.
So the day before the escrow to close,
And then Catherine and Erwin move out,
I went into the garage.
Well,
The night before,
I get really,
Really worried.
And I kept walking up and down my apartment and praying and saying,
God,
You got to help these kids.
Yeah,
Really,
Something has to be done.
And I kept saying,
God,
I'm going to be a good friend.
And it was,
I went into a deep meditation of saying,
Something has to be done.
God and I was literally up all night.
So the next morning,
When I came to the house,
I went into the garage,
Catherine and enter was in the kitchen making me a cup of coffee.
I went into the garage.
And again,
Picture hundreds and hundreds of boxes and every box is and papers.
And I don't know what totally but something to do reaching a hand region,
This one box,
A little voice and pull out an envelope.
And I did.
And inside that envelope was $5,
000 cash.
So I went into the house,
And I said,
Catherine,
Earl,
Come over here.
And I said,
Close your eyes and stick out your hands.
And they did.
And I put $5,
000 cash in their hands.
And I said,
The boxes mine,
The dad gave me the boxes.
It's all mine.
So I'm giving this to you.
So you can move.
And they were like,
Really,
Obviously happy.
They even made me a cake.
I grew up in Boston.
So they made me a Boston cream cake.
So I said,
Oh,
Great.
And we all ate the cake the next day.
And I said,
Okay,
You have roughly $6,
500 worth of cash.
I said,
Well,
What are you going to do?
And do you?
And they said,
Well,
We were thinking of moving to up in the mountains by Bishop up there.
I said,
What Bishop in Carpentaria that's about 300 miles away.
Do you have a place to go to?
I mean,
I mean,
That's,
That's great.
But have you ever been a bishop?
Have you ever been up there?
No,
They've never been.
But we saw something in a little newspaper article in a Carpentaria paper about this one little house up in the mountains.
And we want you to call the owner on our behalf.
I said,
Okay,
I said,
Have you talked to the owner?
He said,
Yes,
We have talked to the owner.
But there's about six or seven or eight or nine other people that want the same place.
And we don't know what to say to him anymore.
We'd like to have you to just call him up.
So I said,
Okay,
So I picked up the phone,
I called him.
And it was really a was I noticed that by his name,
He was a Native American.
So I said,
Where are you from?
He said,
I'm from San Ynez Valley.
I said,
Oh,
That's just over the mountains from Santa Barbara.
That's like 45 miles away.
I said,
By any chance,
Do you know a man named Grandfather Samu?
And it was dead silence on the phone.
He said,
Grandfather Samu is my leader,
My spiritual leader.
I said,
Well,
He adopted me when my father passed away many years ago.
And I drove,
I drive them all over the state of California,
To do these Earth Day celebrations.
And now the celebration,
I said,
Could you do me a favor?
He goes,
Absolutely.
I said,
I have Earl and Catherine here.
And they really want to rent out your house.
He said,
Okay,
They have it.
And he said,
They don't have to give me last month's rent or a security deposit.
I said,
That'll be really,
Really great.
But I noticed that the house is about 20 miles away from any towns.
And Catherine,
They don't have a car.
She can drive,
She has a driver's license.
He said,
Don't worry,
I will have someone drive up to their house every week to take them to town.
He said,
I would just look after them.
And he did.
They lived there for maybe 10 years before they moved someplace else.
I really believe that you can you can really manifest anything if you really set your mind to it.
I wanted to ask,
How did you meet Grandfather?
I asked some land listed.
And he called me he was thinking of buying it and opening up a true marriage village on the land.
But unfortunately,
That never happened.
That was Grandfather's dream to have a true marriage village in a museum dedicated to his people.
And that's actually happening now.
And what because of the true mass casino,
And they actually do putting together a big museum.
Is he still alive?
No,
He passed away about four or five years ago at the age of 100.
And then you said that grandfather adopted you?
How did how did that happen?
Well,
It was a figure of speech when my father died.
My father was killed on a car accident.
And I was,
You know,
I was seeing him on a regular basis.
I got called on a total my father just died.
And I met him soon after that.
He said,
Put my hand he put his hands around me because I'm,
You consider me your father.
You look at me as my father.
It wasn't any formal adoption.
It was,
He just put his hands around me and said,
I,
I'm going to say I,
I,
You you will look at me as your father.
I said,
I'm on it.
You know,
I read a lot of books on shamanic practices around the world.
But are you familiar with Vine Deloria Jr.
?
No.
He just passed away.
He was a prolific indigenous Native American historian,
Theologian,
Advocate,
Philosopher,
A very powerful man.
Anyway,
He just wrote,
He wrote this incredible book called God is Red,
Which is fabulous.
And he,
I just finished another book by him,
Which the title is escaping me.
But the way we used to live,
I think,
And it's all about Native American shamanic practices,
But what people detailed Westerners detailed,
And what they saw and witnessed that shamans could do,
And that a lot of it when you read the book,
Deloria says,
There are no explanations for this.
We can't explain it.
But these men,
Basically,
Because they were men,
Were able to do this.
There have been hundreds of witnesses to things that seem inexplicable,
But these things happened.
And so,
You know,
I wished I wish I could have witnessed those things,
Because I think those are the kind of things that open your mind in your heart to there's more to this world than,
Than we actually know.
Yes.
I think that story is really of your miracle is really fabulous.
And I think it's what is really precious about it is your big heart.
Because you saw these two people who they needed help.
Here you are faced with your client who is like this ogre.
He was so unbelievable.
You had a you had a seed to believe it.
Seriously,
I mean,
I'm listening to you describe him and I think,
I don't even gosh,
I guess I'm lucky that I haven't met anyone like that.
But I guess they're out there.
Yes,
He was truly mean,
Mean spirited.
You know,
And there's two kids.
I mean,
He painted a picture of all awful these,
These kids were and they were the opposite.
It was a two places,
Little angels you ever wanted to meet.
Yeah.
I mean,
I would suggest that you're stepping in and your intervention was part of the miracle that this client came to you because who knows if the client would have picked someone else.
They probably wouldn't have had the those kids welfare in mind at all.
And so the very fact Yeah,
The very fact that the client asked you and enlisted you then allowed you to be an agent to help them make that transition to a new place.
And then just the fact that the new landlord was new grandfather is kind of astonishing.
I had a house in Rancho Mirage.
And one day,
It hit about 120 degrees.
It the ranch of mirages in the desert next to Palm Springs.
It was an extremely hot day.
And the air condition went out.
And it was really,
Really hot.
And to get a new air condition was like $15,
000 to get a new air condition,
And I just didn't have the money.
So I just focus on it.
Let let go released on it.
And then I went out I opened the garage door the garage door face the street.
When I opened the door,
A air condition truck was parked across the street.
And this this serviceman came up to me and said,
How would you like to have a new air condition?
I just remove this,
This air condition in my truck from a brand new house,
But it was a little too small.
So I had installed a new one.
And I have a brand new air condition if you want it.
I said,
Oh,
Okay,
That'll be fine.
He said about,
Um,
I said,
I don't know how to put it together.
He said,
Well,
If you pay me $500,
I'd be happy to do it right now.
I said,
Okay,
I had a $500.
And he installed a new air condition.
You really can't manifest anything you want.
If you if you let go,
And let God take over.
And just don't worry about the outcome.
I was gonna say you must feel especially beloved by God,
For sure.
And I never gave you any thought.
God loves us.
God loves all of us.
And that's it.
