Welcome,
Dreamers,
To a world where anything is possible.
I'm Lisa,
And I'll be the voice tucking you in this evening.
Our journey tonight is called The Girl Who Met a Mermaid.
But before we set sail,
Let's get comfortable.
Take a moment to relax and settle in.
Adjust your pillows and straighten your covers.
Make sure everything is just right,
And let this story transport you to realms of magic and imagination.
All you have to do is listen and believe.
Now close your eyes,
Open your mind,
And let's go to dreamland.
Tonight we are traveling to a small seaside town to meet Stella,
A young girl whose days are spent diving for pearls to support her family.
It's a simple life,
But an honest one.
Upon waking before sunrise as usual,
Stella lit the stove for her morning tea and gazed out at the ocean,
Its surface glinting in the first dim light.
This view never failed to make Stella smile.
She delighted in the sea,
Its beauty,
Mystery,
And promise of adventure.
If only I could explore its hidden depths,
She sighed.
You see,
Stella dreamed of discovering magnificent creatures,
Sunken treasure,
And whole worlds beneath the surface,
But her family depended on the pearls she collected each day.
So she dutifully dove down and gathered oysters from the sandy bottom.
After breakfast with her parents and younger sister,
Stella walked down the windswept dunes,
Her pearl diving gear in a bag over her shoulder.
When she reached the shoreline,
She slipped on her weighted belt,
Adjusted her netted cap,
And waded into the bracing waves.
Taking a deep breath,
Stella kicked powerfully out into the deeper waters,
Then dove down through shafts of sunlight.
She pried oysters from rock shelves,
Subtly guided by some sixth sense to where pearls might lie hidden.
Later,
Back on shore,
Her family eagerly pried open the oysters,
Seeking the rare luminous gems.
Though tiring,
This work brought Stella joy,
As she was so closely tied to the sea she loved.
When Stella climbed into bed at the day's end,
Her mind wandered.
She imagined diving not for oysters,
But to discover sunken wrecks,
Schools of jewel-colored fish,
And seashell castles.
It felt like an adventure was always calling to her.
Tonight gazing out her window at the full moon's reflection shimmering in the dark water,
Stella felt that familiar longing awaken inside her once more.
As if the sea itself was whispering,
Inviting her into its embrace under cover of night,
Stella's mind spun with possibility.
Tonight,
She decided,
While her family slept,
She would answer the ocean's call.
She would slip into the silvery water and see what marvels she might uncover beneath the waves.
Surely,
This feeling was the sea's way of letting her know her life's greatest adventure was about to begin.
Moonlight Swim Quietly,
Stella dressed and tiptoed outside into the moonlit night.
The crisp air tingled her skin as she quietly made her way down the sandy shore.
Under the glow of the full moon,
Stella slipped into the silvery water for a late-night swim.
As she paddled further out,
The sea remained calm and tranquil.
She relaxed,
Embracing the solitude.
Kicking her feet gently,
She propelled herself through the soothing darkness.
The stars above her seemed to wink at her conspiratorially approving of her rebellious nighttime adventure.
Stella couldn't help but grin as she floated weightlessly,
Her long brown hair fanning out around her.
She took a deep breath of the salty sea air and ducked her head below the surface.
Opening her eyes,
She was surrounded by a world of midnight blue.
The only light came from the moon,
Casting everything in an ethereal glow.
As Stella dove deeper,
She felt herself entering a mysterious realm.
Schools of silverfish swam past her like flickering candles.
Delicate strands of kelp swayed hypnotically with the current.
Stella reached out and let the soft tendrils brush along her fingertips.
She wished she could pause this moment and preserve the still beauty of the sleeping sea.
Rolling onto her back,
Stella continued floating along.
She gazed up at the undulating surface above her like a living painting.
She watched the dappled moonlight dance across the gentle waves.
Stella couldn't remember the last time she felt so content.
She imagined she was the only person awake in the world right now.
It was a delicious secret,
Her own private adventure.
Buoyed by the salt water,
Stella let her mind wander to distant shores,
Sunken ships,
And mythical creatures lurking in the unexplored depths.
Suddenly,
Stella was jarred from her daydream by a startling sound.
A loud splash some distance away.
Treading water,
She scanned her surroundings,
But saw nothing unusual.
Was it just her imagination?
No,
There it was again.
This time,
She definitely saw movement in the shadows ahead.
Stella's brows furrowed.
The sea appeared empty once more,
But she couldn't shake the feeling that something or someone was out there in the darkness with her.
Stella hesitated wondering if she should turn back,
But her curiosity burned brighter than any fear.
Slowly she began paddling toward where she had seen the strange disturbance,
Holding her breath and peering into the darkness.
Stranger in the waves,
There it was again.
A flash of shimmery scales and movement in the distance.
Stella's heart quickened with apprehension and excitement.
She squinted,
Trying to make out what it could be.
A large fish,
Perhaps?
No,
This shape appeared almost human-like.
Hello?
Stella called out tentatively.
Is someone there?
Only the lapping of the waves answered her.
Stella took a deep breath to steady her nerves.
She had ventured so far from shore already.
Should she keep going?
Curiosity won out.
She steeled her resolve and resumed swimming toward the mysterious figure.
As she drew nearer,
The shape became clearer in the moonlight.
Stella could make out what looked like a woman with long,
Flowing hair,
But where her legs should be was a sleek fishtail.
Stella gasped in frozen shock.
The creature had stopped swimming and appeared to be watching Stella intently with large,
Unblinking eyes.
Could it be the legends were true?
Stella's mind reeled as she realized she was gazing upon a real,
Live mermaid.
Never in her wildest dreams did she think she would encounter such a magical being.
The mermaid looked at Stella and cocked her head,
Studying her.
Stella stayed very still,
Not wanting to frighten the wondrous creature.
She noticed the mermaid's tail shimmered with iridescent scales that caught the moonlight like glittering jewels.
Finally the mermaid smiled at Stella.
Buoyed by this friendly gesture,
Stella found her voice.
My name is Stella,
She offered,
Giving a small wave.
The mermaid sank below the surface,
Then burst upwards in a graceful arc,
Diving over Stella's head.
Stella laughed with surprised joy.
Resurfacing,
The mermaid spoke in a language Stella didn't recognize,
Musical trills and clicks.
But the intention was clear.
Come with me,
She seemed to say.
Stella hesitated only a moment before nodding in agreement.
How could she pass up such an invitation?
With an excited kick,
Stella swam after the mermaid into deeper waters.
Her heart pounded as they ventured even further from shore,
The mermaid occasionally glancing back as if to check on her new human companion.
Stella continued swimming after the mermaid.
As the shore faded from sight,
Stella focused on the hypnotic motion of the mermaid's shimmering emerald tail ahead of her.
Though the ocean darkened,
Stella felt no fear.
Powerful strokes propelled her downward,
Heart pounding with excitement.
The mermaid glanced back,
Her eyes glinting as if to say,
Stay close.
Stella sensed she was being guided to a world few humans had ever seen.
She was ready.
She belonged here,
With this extraordinary new friend.
A silent trust passed between them as the mermaid led the way into the velvety depths.
As they swam,
Dreamlike creatures emerged,
Drawn by the mermaid's presence.
Curious dolphins chattered and clicked a greeting.
Peaceful manatees lumbered over to tenderly nuzzle the mermaid before drifting off.
Weathered and wise,
Even a giant sea turtle surfaced to nod a welcome.
Stella was humbled and honored to swim among such magic.
She felt as if the ocean was welcoming her.
At last,
The mermaid paused before a towering underwater cliff face.
She sang a haunting melody,
And astonishingly,
A hidden doorway opened.
Warm light flooded out,
And the mermaid motioned for Stella to follow.
Swimming inside,
Stella found herself in a spectacular cavern,
Its walls encrusted with glowworms and coral.
The mermaid led her to a bower of sponges and pearl-studded sand at the heart of the cavern.
Laughing musically,
She settled in and patted the space beside her.
Then,
To Stella's amazement,
She spoke.
Welcome,
Stella,
The mermaid said sincerely.
I'm Marina.
Her voice was melodic with a bubbling,
Underwater quality.
Stella beamed with delight and surprise.
You can talk,
She exclaimed.
Marina laughed a pleasant chiming sound.
Of course,
Though your human ears may find it strange,
Come,
Let me show you my world.
She extended a hand,
Her skin shimmering with subtle blue scales.
Stella eagerly took it,
Marveling at the webbing between Marina's delicate fingers.
Trusting her new friend completely,
Stella allowed herself to be pulled to the glowing waters.
As they swam,
Marina pointed out fantastical sights.
Those are moon jellies,
And that's a sea butterfly.
Stella's eyes darted around,
Trying to take it all in.
Fish like neon rainbows flitted by in schools.
Golden fans of coral waved in the currents.
It was all so stunningly beautiful.
Stella was humbled that this magical creature had chosen to share her secret world.
Stella squeezed Marina's hand gently in silent communication.
Thank you.
Her heart swelled,
Realizing that her dream of befriending a mermaid was coming true.
Mystical Undersea World Hand in hand,
Marina led Stella through her mystical undersea world.
Finally,
They came to an area lit by bioluminescent algae on the walls.
Stella's eyes widened in awe.
The glowing cyan light revealed sprawling coral gardens and rainbow hues.
Schools of angelfish and parrotfish wove between branching staghorn corals and enormous brain corals.
Stella gently touched their rippling,
Colorful fins as they swam by.
Marina smiled at Stella's wonder and led her further.
Stella now saw shimmering mounds of pearls,
Jewels,
And gold coins spinning from an open treasure chest on the cavern floor,
Bounty from centuries of shipwrecks.
Stella drifted over to a pile of emeralds the size of her fist,
Admiring their crystalline green facets.
With a tinkling laugh,
Marina encouraged Stella to explore the treasure.
Stella grinned and scooped up double handfuls of the gems,
Letting them cascade through her fingers in a glittering waterfall.
As they ventured deeper,
Stella saw even more fantastical sights.
Strange underwater plants waved tendril-like vines.
Jellyfish illuminated the water like floating lanterns.
A giant oyster opened its massively pearly shell,
And Stella glimpsed a rainbow-sheened black pearl the size of a baseball nestled within.
As Stella and Marina turned,
A miniature city of sand-colored dwellings carved right into the rock wall appeared.
My people's old village,
Marina explained a touch of sadness in her voice.
They kept swimming and came upon an enormous statue of a mermaid,
Her arms outstretched.
Her wise and kind face struck Stella.
Our ancestral mother,
Marina said reverently.
Stella's heart swelled,
Taking in the beauty surrounding her.
Gazing up,
She saw rays of moonlight streaming through cracks in the cavern ceiling,
Like scattered stardust.
She never imagined a place could be so magical and serene.
Turning slowly in place,
Stella took in every detail,
Determined to commit this mystical underwater world to memory.
It felt like a dream,
Yet the mermaid's hand holding hers was real.
Stella was overflowing with gratitude for Marina's friendship and this gift of wonder.
Midnight chats.
Ensconced in Marina's seashell bower,
Stella and the mermaid talked the night away.
Their unlikely friendship grew deeper as they discovered shared hopes and dreams.
Marina described her childhood playing in the kelp forests,
Learning to harness the ocean's power.
She longed to see distant shores someday.
Stella told Marina how she learned pearl diving from her mother and of her desire to master new skills.
She wished she could stay underwater as long as the merfolk and explore the ocean's full mysteries.
Marina's eyes brightened excitedly.
I can teach you.
We mermaids train from a young age to hold our breath.
Eager to learn,
Stella listened intently as Marina instructed her to take full,
Steady breaths,
Fill her lungs completely,
Then release slowly before diving.
The secret is relaxation.
Move with purpose,
But don't struggle,
Advised Marina.
Stella dove down and put these teachings into practice,
Gliding through the moonlit water,
Limbs loose and strong.
She felt a new fluidity and confidence in her movements.
When she resurfaced,
Marina cheered,
A born mermaid,
Soon you'll outswim even me.
Stella laughed.
Then an idea came to her.
She asked Marina if she could teach her the merfolk's technique for finding pearls.
Marina readily agreed.
Our people bond with the oysters over decades until they gift us their pearls willingly.
Taking Stella's hands,
She guided them along the seafloor,
Letting her feel the language of stone and shell.
Stella listened intently to the ocean's whispers.
Trust your instincts and follow the silent pull,
Marina advised.
Stella closed her eyes and reached into the sandy bottom until she felt a tickle,
A living hum.
Gently,
She dug until an oyster emerged.
Prying it open,
There lay a luminous pearl.
Stella whooped triumphantly,
Holding her prize aloft.
Marina cheered,
Eyes sparkling.
You've uncovered the ocean's secrets yourself tonight,
She said proudly.
Stella would remember Marina's counsel on her next pearl dive,
And the special skills they shared would connect them,
Even when apart.
Stella and Marina chatted through the night.
Together they had unlocked magic that would last a lifetime.
The Mermaid's Gift.
As the first blush of dawn kissed the surface far above,
Stella knew their magical night together was ending.
She and Marina floated up and back into the open sea.
Turning to her friend,
Stella spoke earnestly.
I'll never forget this enchanted time together.
You've given me such gifts,
Marina.
The Mermaid smiled,
Eyes crinkling.
As have you,
Stella,
So I wish to give you one more.
Marina withdrew a lustrous orb from a leather pouch,
The pale pink of sunrise.
Stella's eyes widened.
A perfect pearl.
So you will remember our bond,
No matter how far we roam,
Marina said,
Pressing it into Stella's palm.
Stella enclosed the pearl in her fist,
Overcome with emotion.
I could never forget.
You will always hold a special place in my heart,
Marina.
Marina pulled Stella into a tight embrace.
As they hugged,
Stella committed every sensation to memory.
Marina's cool skin,
Her perfect scales,
Her sleek tail.
With a final smile,
Marina dove downward and disappeared in a flash of emerald.
Clutching her gift,
Stella turned towards shore,
Knowing she left the best treasure behind,
Swimming in the fathomless blue,
A token to remember.
Stella collapsed into bed as the morning sun streamed through her window.
Her limbs were let in,
But her mind buzzed with memories of the incredible night.
She opened her palm and gazed at the perfect pearl Marina had given her.
Closing her fingers around its smooth,
Glowing surface,
Stella allowed herself to recall every magical detail.
The pearl anchored her to the reality of what had seemed an impossible dream.
As she drifted to sleep,
Stella could practically feel the rush of swimming in the moonlit depths again with Marina.
She could hear the mermaid's melodic voice and musical laughter,
And slept more soundly than she had in years.
When she awoke,
Stella felt rested and strangely changed.
All her old dreams now seemed trivial compared to the wonders she had witnessed.
Later at breakfast,
Stella's mother asked about her pearl diving the day before.
Stella just smiled mysteriously and showed her Marina's gift.
It's the most valuable pearl I've ever found,
She said.
Her mother beamed proudly and praised Stella's skill and hard work.
When she returned to diving,
Stella descended boldly into the waves.
She explored reefs shimmering with schools of fish and kissed sharks as they passed,
At home in the ocean's mysteries.
The pearl remained her only evidence of that night,
But its true value wasn't gold.
It was the memories of courage,
Wonder,
And magic she would always carry.
One dusk,
Stella thought she saw Marina's fiery hair in the distance.
Her heart leaped as she ran out into the sea to catch up,
But no one was there.
Standing back on shore with wet sand between her toes,
Stella gazed out at the darkening sea,
Rubbed the pearl between her fingers,
And whispered,
Until we meet again,
My friend.
Clutching the pearl in her palm,
She turned and walked home with her heart full of hope.
The end.
That's all for this evening,
Dear one.
Sweet dreams.

This was a nice fantasy story read with a soothing voice. I enjoyed it. I would love to see a version that didn’t have a chime at the end, as I could see that waking me up if I’d have fallen asleep during the story
