This poem and commentary offers a moment to pause the toxic cycle of comparison and bring awareness to the wealth in our own lives. "When I Compare Myself to You" is meant to unlodge this pattern and refocus that energy on what we can continue to create and receive.

I'm Sandra Schilberg and today I'd like to share a poem I wrote about comparing myself to you.

See,

Sometimes I compare myself to you.

Not the real you,

But the you that I managed to see through my own very fuzzy lens.

I'll read the poem twice and then close with some commentary.

When I Compare Myself to You When I compare myself to you,

I follow the crowd,

But I try to stay true.

But can I fathom the deep trembling that will ensue?

When I compare myself to you,

My green monster awakens,

And your good fortune is food.

Do I forget I have fine fortune too?

When I compare myself to you,

My young child feels afraid of you.

She overstates your height and girth.

Do I forget I'm growing too?

When I compare myself to you,

I know the inner chaos that will ensue.

I'll concoct a connected heart,

Open mind.

I can't forget I matter too.

When I compare myself to you,

I follow the crowd,

But try to stay true.

But can I fathom the deep trembling that will ensue?

When I compare myself to you,

My green monster awakens,

And your good fortune is food.

Do I forget I have fine fortune too?

When I compare myself to you,

My young child feels afraid of you.

She overstates your height and girth.

Do I forget I'm growing too?

When I compare myself to you,

I know the inner chaos that will ensue.

I'll concoct a connected heart,

Open mind.

I can't forget I matter too.

So I'd like to close by reminding you that you are exactly where you're supposed to be.

Creating and receiving the experiences that serve your own growth and your own journey.

That if you're exactly where you're supposed to be,

For you and not for anyone else.
