Welcome to Nourishment and Stillness.
I'm Yin Shan and today we will practice mindful eating together.
As we gather for this meal,
Let's take a moment to arrive fully in the present moment.
Feel the support of your seat beneath you and the presence of those around you.
As you serve yourself,
Pause and reflect on the journey of this food.
The rain,
Sunshine,
Earth,
Air,
And countless hands have come together to bring this nourishment to you.
Feel the gratitude for the interconnectedness that supports your existence.
Before we begin eating,
Let's center ourselves for the five contemplations.
With each reflection,
Take a deep breath in and out.
This food is a gift of the earth,
The sky,
Many living beings,
And much hard and loving work.
May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive this food.
May we recognize and transform unwholesome mental formations,
Especially our greed,
And learn to eat with moderation.
May we keep our compassion in life by eating in such a way that reduces the suffering of living beings,
Heals,
And preserves our precious planet.
May we accept this food so that we may nurture our connection to others,
Strengthen our community,
And nourish our purpose of serving all living beings.
As we take our first bite,
Chew slowly and mindfully.
Notice the textures,
Flavors,
And sensations as they unfold.
Chew each mouthful thoroughly,
Allowing the food to become liquefied,
Honoring the nourishment it provides.
Eating in silence lets your mindfulness deepen.
Feel the joy of the present moment as you savor each piece.
Be aware of the presence of those around you,
Their companionship enriching this experience.
When the bell sounds,
You may choose to share a mindful conversation with a friend or quietly continue your practice.
Notice the peaceful atmosphere created by your awareness and the collective presence of everyone gathered.
As you finish your meal,
Take a moment to reflect.
Your bowl is now empty,
And your hunger is satisfied.
Gratitude fills your heart as you acknowledge how fortunate you are to receive this nourishment.
May the energy of mindfulness and compassion that you cultivated during this meal accompany you throughout your day.
