I wrote this poem while walking a trail near my home, the earth still soft and muddy from a recent rain. The accompanying photo was taken in Labro, Italy—a village nestled into the mountainside. There, as here, the earth binds the homes as it binds our bodies.

Dear friends,

The poem I have for you today is called Earth.

There is earth within me,

Awakening,

Grounded,

Strong.

It is earth I lean on to rest that provides for me,

Nourishes and comforts me.

It is earth within my body that I walk upon.

It gives me a place to reside,

A form to grow from,

To feel contained in,

To move within.

Earth binds my bones,

Receives my breath,

And patiently waits for my return,

To absorb my body back into itself,

To seed and birth again.
