Loving kindness is not something we have to manufacture or force. As Sharon Salzberg reminds us, it is an ability—something that can be learned, gently cultivated over time. In this practice, we are not trying to feel a particular way. Instead, we are exploring an intention—an inclination of the mind toward kindness, warmth, and care, firstly to ourselves and then to a stranger. This is the practice of taking small risks with awareness— choosing kindness instead of reflexive criticism, opening to the humanity in ourselves and others, and extending care beyond the usual boundaries of our attention, knowing that like us, all beings want to be well, to be happy, and to live with ease and kindness
