Are you ready to improve your balance?
We all know the importance of being able to balance on one leg.
In fact,
Studies show that if you can do this,
You're more likely to live longer and you'll also boost your brain performance,
Strengthen the brain.
So let's do a test that will help us improve our balance.
I call it the super senior sock and shoe test.
So what we're going to do is balance on one leg.
I have a counter nearby.
So if I start to wobble,
I'm not going to fall.
I can grab on.
Place your socks and shoes right in front of you.
Start to shift your weight fully to one leg so I have my weight on my right foot.
And then I'm going to start to hinge forward and grab my sock.
And remember those wobbles are part of this,
Especially if this is new to you.
And so I'm going to slide that sock on.
So if this is going well,
I might add the shoe.
If I'm really wobbly,
I'll just do the socks and that's where I'll end the test.
But since it seems to be going pretty well so far,
I'm going to reach down,
Grab for my shoe.
And slide it on.
There we go.
And then no flip-flops when you do this.
You need to have a shoe that you need to tie to make it a little more challenging.
Then once the shoe is tied,
And we're balanced,
We switch.
So I find this a little more challenging when I'm not barefoot,
Because when I'm barefoot,
It's a little more grounding.
I have a little bit more balance.
So here I go.
I'm grabbing the sock.
There we go.
Sliding it on,
And then once I have the sock on,
Grabbing the shoe,
Trying not to touch that foot down if I can.
And hey,
If I do,
I just keep going.
Practice makes perfect.
All right,
So now I've got one more.
Shoe to go here.
Gotta tie it nice and tight.
Imagine if you can do this well,
You can prevent falls.
And you might even live longer.
All right,
There we go.
So give it a try.
If you have people you live with,
Maybe you do it as a contest.
See who can succeed at it,
Who can do it faster.
The idea is simply to build more strength in your legs,
More core,
And the ability to balance on one leg,
Which we do every time we step up on a curb,
When we reach for something on a high shelf.
So this has great implications for us in our daily life.
Thanks so much for playing,
And keep practicing!
