Layers of expansion and contraction.

If at first you are unable to actually sense the differentiation,

It is perfectly fine to simply imagine it.

Sit on the floor or on a stool and feel your breath.

You may feel the expansion with every inhale and the contraction with every exhale.

This is the way we visualize the breath.

Our body expanding in space when inhaling,

Contracting in space when exhaling.

And there is another,

More subtle and opposite action happening at the same time.

In order to inhale and expand your ribcage,

The intercostal muscles between your ribs contract.

In order to inhale,

Chest and belly muscles along with your diaphragm activate,

Contracting their fibers.

With your next inhale,

Can you sense or imagine this muscular contraction that allows your body to expand and breathe?

With your exhale,

Can you feel the muscles loosen and expand?

In the muscles you can clearly feel contracting to inhale.

You can stay with the sensation if you want,

Or if you are up for a challenge,

You can expand your focus and try to feel simultaneously the spatial expansion and muscular contraction of your inhale and the spatial contraction and muscular expansion of your exhale.

With your next inhale,

Can you feel the muscles loosen and expand?

Excellent meditation. I had never thought of this paradox and yet it became so deeply clear during the sitting. Thank you, Erifily.
