Thupten Jinpa, Ph.D provides advice on how each of us can reframe the challenging moments in our life with compassion thereby creating greater emotional regulation. Scientific appreciation of our social nature has expanded and deepened, shedding light on the intimate connection between compassion and our health, mental well-being, longevity, sense of purpose, and the ability to maintain perspective in the face of stress and life challenges. Only when we make compassion a guiding principle and active force throughout society – focused on alleviating suffering on an individual and collective level – will we be able to create a more caring and humane world.

Another practical step that you can take is to develop a habit of recasting your motivations from a standpoint of compassion on a regular basis.

So for example,

When you had a difficult encounter with someone at a workplace,

What is done is done,

But in a reflective moment,

If you are able to revisit in your mind,

In some sense,

Play out the scenario,

Replay the scenario,

And then see how could you have responded to this situation differently by bringing compassion.

And that kind of reassessment,

That kind of reframing,

Whether it is a relationship with a workplace,

Whether it is dealing with a tragedy or adversity,

Whether it is in a relationship with intimate people in your life,

Including your children or spouse,

Every now and then,

Being able to take the time to reflect and reframe and recast the situation by,

In some sense,

Changing the story by adding a little bit of a different mix by throwing in compassion to see how the decks fall into place.

I think that is an important habit that really could help so that you are really able to bring compassion more actively into your everyday life.
