Hello everyone,
Thank you for joining us.
Our story tonight is called Sea Spell.
But first what I want everyone to do is lay down and have your hands down by your side.
And you're going to have your hands open facing up toward the ceiling.
And in one hand you're going to have a clear box with a balloon tied to it.
And you're going to think back from your day and imagine anything that made you feel upset or angry or make you want to cry,
Any feelings that were a little bit upsetting.
Take all those thoughts and put them in that box.
And close the top and lift your hand a little bit and let that box float up and up and up through your ceiling and outside and it's going to float away.
Then I want you to think back to your day today.
Think about anything that made you really happy,
Made you smile,
Made you laugh,
Made you feel good about yourself,
Made you feel creative or proud.
Take all those happy thoughts and put them inside the other box.
And then I want you to think of a safe place.
It can be in your backpack,
In your backyard,
In your bedroom somewhere.
Think of anywhere you want to keep that box.
And then I want you to close the top and lift your hand a little bit and poof,
That box is going to go wherever you wanted it to be where it's nice and safe and you can go back and revisit those happy thoughts whenever you want to.
Okay,
Now that our mind is all clear,
We're going to lay down and get all warm and cuddly in our bed and get ready to listen to our story.
There were two best friends named Haley and Maggie.
They had been best friends since kindergarten and were now eight years old.
One day Haley came over to Maggie's house for a play date.
It was a hot summer day so they were out in the backyard playing in the pool.
They were splashing in the water and having a great time and laughing.
They were diving down for rings at the bottom of the pool and they even brought some Barbie dolls to play as well.
Haley said she was having such a wonderful time and she never wanted to get out of the water.
She wished they could swim forever.
Maggie agreed and said wouldn't it be fun if they could be mermaids and spend the whole day swimming around the ocean and just playing and splashing in the waves?
Maggie said if she were a mermaid she would have a teal mermaid fin with a bright yellow top that was covered in jewels.
Her hair would be to her shoulders and pulled back in a headband made of seashells.
Haley decided she would have a bright pink mermaid tail that shimmered as she swam and a sea green top that looked like sea glass and long brown hair that flowed and swished along with the water.
Soon all this daydreaming became a game of pretend.
The girls were diving in the water,
Flipping around and swimming as if they had mermaid tails.
This is so fun!
I wish we could really be mermaids said Maggie as she twirled in the water.
Me too said Haley and she lifted herself up on the pool's edge.
Haley motioned for Maggie to come and join her.
Well I guess it doesn't hurt to try.
Here take my hand and close your eyes I have an idea.
They joined hands and both closed their eyes real tight as Haley said a magic spell.
Mermaids,
Mermaids of the sea,
Let us take your place so you can be free.
Maggie caught on and they both said the spell together one more time.
Mermaids,
Mermaids of the sea,
Let us take your place so you can be free.
After that they jumped in the pool together at the same time.
When the girls opened their eyes they could not believe what they saw.
They were no longer in the pool but rather they were surrounded by coral and brightly colored fish.
The girls looked at each other in total disbelief and smiled.
Their smiles grew even bigger when they looked down to see the teal and pink mermaid tails they had envisioned earlier while playing in the pool.
The girls were beyond excited.
They couldn't believe that their spell had actually worked.
Just then the girls noticed a sea turtle approaching them.
Hello ladies said the turtle enjoying the water.
The girls both started to answer at the same time talking over each other in excited sentences.
Yes,
Oh this is unbelievable.
So you see we said these magic words and well actually it was more a spell but we were just goofing around and it really worked.
Anyway we're here and you're a turtle that talks?
What?
The turtle gave a slow smile.
Oh yes,
The spell.
You are not the first of your kind that have come into our ocean.
What that means is that two mermaids said the same spell at the same time you said your spell on land and you switched places.
It's only for one day.
When the day is over you will return to the exact spot you were when you said the spell and it'll be like no time has passed at all.
I can't believe it yelled Haley.
So what should we do with our one day as a mermaid?
Maggie asked the turtle.
The turtle thought for a moment and said,
Well you could start at the treasure cove and go from there.
Talk to some fish while you're there and make some friends.
They'll have some ideas for you as well.
Just swim down that coral piece right there,
The orange one,
Then swim left and it'll take you to the current.
Jump in and it'll carry right over to the treasure cove.
You'll see it brightly lit up.
Great,
Thank you so much!
The girls exclaimed and they were on their way.
They did as the turtle said and they turned left over at the coral and sure enough they saw the current bubbling around in the water.
The girls looked at each other and joined hands and jumped in.
The current quickly took them through the water and the girls laughed at the bubbles all around them tickling their face and arms.
Just a bit forward they saw light shining in the dark horizon.
The light got brighter and brighter as they moved closer and the girls knew it had to be the treasure cove.
It was an undersea cave and inside seemed to be completely lit up.
The girls decided to roll out of the current and swim on their own as they approached.
As they neared the entrance they discovered that the light was coming from electric eels that were gathered altogether to light up the inside of the cave.
They continued on and entered inside the treasure cove.
Inside they were amazed at what they saw.
There were all kinds of beautiful shells all over the sea floor.
The walls were decorated with seaweed bouquets,
Starfish,
Sea urchins and beautiful brightly colored coral.
They also caught a glimpse of a few pearl strands and gold coins that could only have been from sunken treasure.
There were many other fish swimming around inside the cave as well looking at all of the beautiful pieces.
Haley lightly ran her finger over a bright blue starfish on the wall.
It was unlike anything she'd ever seen before.
She was paying such close attention to the beautiful color that she didn't see the other fish coming her way and bumped right into him.
Oh my goodness I'm so sorry exclaimed Haley.
Not to worry said the fish.
It happens a lot here there's so much to look at.
Haley said,
Yes it really is beautiful here.
It's unlike anything I've ever seen before.
This is my first day here.
Well then I highly recommend that you go over to Coral City and try one of the kelp combs.
They are delicious.
Oh I would love to try said Haley.
How do you find it?
Just as you leave here you'll swim down a little while until you see a piece of bright pink coral with green dots on the top.
Take a right there and just keep swimming as far as you can swim and pretty soon you'll come across Coral City.
You'll know when you find it.
Haley thanked the fish and rushed off to find Maggie.
The girls excitedly swam down to find the pink coral with green dots.
Eventually they found it and took a right just as the yellow fish had said and they swam as fast as they could.
They couldn't wait to see this place called Coral City.
And sure enough they knew it when they had arrived.
It was an entire collection of all these beautiful pieces of coral.
Some up high,
Some down low,
Some on the hill as far as you could see.
There was a rainbow of different colored corals and brightly colored fish swimming all around.
It was magnificent.
As the girls approached Coral City they came across a fish swimming down the main pathway.
Excuse me sir,
We're looking for some place that sells kelp cones.
Could you help?
Of course said the fish.
One of the most famous places in all of Coral City.
Just swim down this path right here and soon you'll see a giant piece of yellow coral with seaweed patches on each side.
That's the place.
I'd show you myself but I'm off to see my friend Sea Turtle for lunch.
They waved goodbye to the fish and set off to find the kelp cones.
When they reached the yellow coral with sea grass on each side there was a line all the way around the corner.
There's a line for these cones?
Boy they must be good.
So the girls swam down and joined the line.
In front of them was another mermaid.
She had a purple tail and blue top with long black hair.
Half of it was pulled up and connected with a beautiful seashell.
That's a beautiful shell you have in your hair Maggie commented.
The mermaid turned around with a smile.
Well thank you she said.
I found it at the treasure cove.
Oh we were just there said Haley.
It's the first time we've been there and it's beautiful.
We've never tried these kelp cones either but we've heard good things.
The dark haired mermaid looked at the girls for a moment and smiled.
Mermaid for a day?
The girls nodded and they all laughed together.
My name is Sandy said the mermaid.
My guess is that you only have a few more hours until you go back to land right?
The girls nodded again.
Okay well there's two more things that you must do while you're here.
You have to see a bubble concert and finish the day by wave surfing.
I'm actually on my way to see the bubble concert after this.
Do you girls care to join me?
Yes the girls excitedly agreed.
They all sat and enjoyed their kelp cones together which were absolutely delicious.
And then they were off to the bubble concert.
They followed Sandy to what looked like an underwater stadium.
There was a big mound of sand and seating had been carved out gradually overlooking the bottom of the pit.
In the center of the pit was a giant sea clam.
The girls took a seat with Sandy amongst all the other sea life that had gathered to watch the show.
The sun was starting to set for the day and they could see bright colors from the sunset putting on a show just above the water line.
As the sun almost set a beam of light came through the ocean water and shone down just perfectly to spotlight the clam.
Then the clam opened its wide mouth and let out an enormous amount of bubbles.
As the bubbles started floating up around the stadium hundreds of tiny little fish swam out and started popping the bubbles in such a way that each pop created a unique sound.
As all of the bubbles popped together it created a beautiful song.
The girls were so amazed.
This went on for some time.
The clam would open its mouth and release more bubbles and the fish would rapidly swim around popping all of the bubbles as fast as they could creating a beautiful song.
Soon the sun went down and the show was over.
Sandy looked over with wide eyes and excitement.
Are you girls ready for some surfing?
They followed Sandy as she swam quickly through the water.
They certainly had heard of surfing before but neither of them could imagine somehow getting on a surfboard with a mermaid tail.
But soon they were at the shore cautiously watching Sandy as what she was going to do next.
She slowly swam up toward the ocean front and popped over the water line just to make sure the coast was clear.
It was dark now and there was no one left on the beach.
She swam back to the girls and said the coast is clear.
Let's go surfing.
They all joined hands and swam to the top of the water's surface.
They stayed close to the shore but still far enough out that they would be mistaken for a dolphin playing in the waves if anyone were to spot them.
Sandy swam a little bit ahead of them and she looked back and yelled,
When you see a wave come in,
Get in front of it and flip your tail as fast as you can.
Then just follow my lead.
They waited in the water for a while and soon a giant wave came upon them.
Alright girls,
Flip your fins.
All three girls started flipping their fins back and forth in the water as fast as they could.
They felt the weight of the wave lift them and start to carry them forward.
Because their tails were moving so fast with the water,
Most of their head and shoulders stayed above the water as they glided to shore.
It felt like they were flying.
The girls spent the last few hours of their time in the ocean surfing the waves with Sandy.
They could see the dark night sky start to lighten and they knew their day under the ocean was coming to an end.
One giant wave came along and the girls jumped in and flipped their fins.
But this time Sandy didn't follow.
As they floated toward the shore they looked back to see Sandy waving goodbye to them.
The girls looked back at each other and saw the wave coming forward to splash over their heads.
The girls held hands,
Took a deep breath and closed their eyes.
When they opened them again,
They were back in the pool like no time had passed.
They swam to the edge and lifted themselves up.
After inspecting their legs to make sure there was no sign of mermaid tail,
They looked up and gave each other a giant hug.
They could barely believe what had just happened.
Just then Maggie's mom called out that lunch was ready.
The girls got out of the pool and put on their towels and started to walk inside.
Surely no one would ever believe them if they tried to explain their adventure,
But they were happy to have experienced it together and it made their friendship that much stronger.
Maggie called out to her mom as they walked inside.
Can we have kelp cones for dessert?
The girls burst out into a fit of laughter as they walked inside and back into their normal land-loving lives.
The End.
I hope you enjoyed our story tonight.
And I hope you get a good night's sleep and wake up ready for a brand new day tomorrow.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
