The world wants you to believe that you don't belong. And that you are alone in your not-belonging. But it's a lie. You belong. To you. To me. To the stars and the sea. photo credit: andrew moca on unsplash

Welcome to this meditation on belonging.

Perhaps one of the greatest myths of the human condition is that we all feel a sense of not belonging and we all feel completely alone in that.

This goes hand in hand with the myth of separation.

That I,

Because my senses tell me so,

Am separate from you.

There you are,

Way over there.

Here I am,

Way over here.

All of us walking around,

Never really sure where or to whom or to what we truly belong.

What if belonging started right here with you right now?

You belonging to yourself,

Your physical experience,

Your inner experience,

Your spiritual experience.

You belonging with me and with us in this meditation.

How is it that we find the way back to that sacred place of belonging,

That belonging to self?

How do we do it when the world tells us again and again and again that we can only belong if we meet certain conditions,

If we act a certain way,

If we make enough money,

If we dress a certain way,

If we say the right things?

But you know it's all a lie.

There is a space within you,

A space so deep and limitless that is the truth of who you are.

That no matter what happens at the surface of the ocean,

The tornado that is raging,

The hurricane,

No matter what happens at the surface,

Whatever chaos there may be,

Deep,

Deep,

Deep within this well that is at the core of who you are,

There is peace,

There is truth,

There is wholeness,

There is limitlessness.

This is what you were born of and it is to this that you belong.

Allow yourself now to just sink into that space,

That depth.

Allow yourself to feel limitless,

To feel connected to all that is,

To feel the heavens converging upon the earth right at the place where you are.

Feel what it feels like to feel connected to all,

All who live,

All who breathe,

To the plants,

To the animals,

To the stones,

To the photons of the sun.

You are made of all of this.

You are made of love,

Of intention,

Of desire,

Of joy.

And so you belong to love.

You belong to intention,

To desire,

And to joy,

Just as joy belongs to you.

Feel into what it feels like in the depth of your being.

Feel what it feels like to belong to yourself.

You,

A high holy creature.

You,

Born in the image of God,

Goddess,

Mother,

Father,

Earth and Sky.

You,

One of billions of other beautiful souls,

Searching for their own place to belong.

Connect in to their hearts.

Use your superpower of compassion.

Zoom out into outer space and see the whole earth in one view,

All of us here,

Longing to belong,

Longing to feel connected.

And all we have to do is remember that we do belong,

First and foremost,

To ourselves,

To the earth,

To the trees,

To the wind,

To mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers,

To aunties and uncles,

Abuelitas and abuelitos.

We belong to all,

And all belong to you.

See if you can just for today put down that message,

Put down the sign,

The image,

The thought,

The word,

The feeling that says,

You don't belong.

Put it down at your feet.

Look at it there,

Almost helpless without you to carry it.

It's not who you are.

It is not your truth.

It is just something the world told you to carry around with you day in and day out.

Something you never bothered to question until now,

Until this very moment when you see you're not belonging at your feet.

Your sense of belonging lives inside your body.

It lives in your cells,

All of your cells belonging to one another.

All of your organs belonging to one another,

All of your bones belonging to one another.

Feel it in your belly.

Nurture it with care and kindness and compassion.

And when the old story wants to be picked up,

Just for today,

You can say no.

Just for today,

I belong.

I belong to me.

I belong to the stars,

To the birds,

To the leaves of the trees.

I belong to the flowers and the sea and every fish there in.

I belong to me.

I belong to my family,

To my lovers,

To my friends.

But first and foremost,

I belong to me.

What does it feel like to wear that belonging?

Wear it with pride.

Wear it with a knowingness of its truth.

Wear it as a radical act of rebellion against a world that wants you to always feel like you don't belong.

You belong to you.

Thank you for meditating with me today.
