In this teaching, Geoff Bell-Devaney talks about the importance of recognizing that part of us may be attached to unhealthy states of suffering and that it is in recognizing that part of us does not want inner peace that we can actually more easily find it.

If we want to live in the present moment,

And all of the peace and power that can only be found here,

We have to be real with ourselves and acknowledge that part of us doesn't perhaps actually want to be in the present moment.

That is,

When an old mood or a negative thought arises,

Part of us may want to get drawn into it because there's a familiarity with these old emotions and thought patterns,

A degree of comfort,

Perhaps,

Of identification with them,

But one that perhaps isn't serving us anymore.

So the next time an old thought or emotional pattern arises,

Rather than allowing it to pull us into it,

We can instead simply meet it with gentleness,

Courage,

And compassion.

That'll help us be bigger than it.

It will also help us acknowledge that the emotion is arising within the broad field of awareness that we ultimately are.

And as we begin to meet our emotions in this way,

They'll start to integrate,

And we'll live much more deeply in the present moment in a more constant state of peace and power.
