Today we're going to focus on recognizing what's happening inside of us when motivation disappears.
So let's start by settling into a comfortable position.
You can do this seated or lying down,
Whatever feels best for you.
And if it feels good for you,
Go ahead and gently allow the eyes to close or take a soft gaze at a spot in front of you.
And just take a few deep intentional breaths in through the nose and out from the mouth.
And let's do two more of those in through the nose and out from the mouth.
Last one in through the nose and out from the mouth.
Today's meditation,
We're exploring what happens when motivation disappears.
When something that once felt easy or exciting suddenly feels heavy or impossible or just like a slog or a chore.
And this experience is really common when the nervous system has been under prolonged stress.
It's not always necessarily a loss of motivation,
But simply a stress response,
A need for the nervous system to have a moment.
So today's about understanding,
Not fixing.
So you don't need to end this practice feeling motivated,
Just understanding what maybe impacts your level of motivation.
So as you continue with your deep breathing,
Just take a moment to notice the weight of your body.
Notice any sensations in your body.
Notice if any areas might feel heavy or dull or tired.
Just really getting in connection with your body's experience.
And just take a moment to think about any time you have felt like your motivation disappeared.
It might have been a situation where you wanted to care.
You felt like something should be important,
But you just weren't able to move or take any action.
Or maybe knowing what needs to be done,
The mind may be spinning in a different direction It happens thinking about this and that,
What you could be doing,
Should be doing,
But feeling stuck.
Or maybe scrolling instead of starting.
Or lying down and getting lost in thought or series when there's work to do.
Just know that when this happens,
It is not a laziness.
It is not a failing.
It is just the nervous system responding after having been in overdrive for too long.
And when this happens,
It will shift into conservation mode.
It's trying to hold on to the energy that you have so that it's not overspent.
Sometimes this can feel like a fogginess or a heaviness,
Or maybe just a complete shutdown.
And that's just your body trying to protect what little energy it has.
See if you can notice if any of this is present for you right now.
Does anything feel heavy?
Is there any emotion present for you that may lead to declined motivation?
And again,
This is just noticing without judgment,
Only with compassion.
And just notice if there's anything that you have recognized that needs to be done,
That you want to do,
That feels like at one point it was very important,
And now the motivation just isn't there.
And if that is present for you,
Just take a moment,
Place your hand over your heart or on your belly or both,
And just take a nice big deep breath and remind yourself that freezing or shutting down or avoiding is a nervous system state.
It's not a character flaw.
There's nothing wrong with you.
And your energy will return when safety returns,
Not when the pressure increases.
And so just breathe that in for a few moments.
It might even help to have a safety mantra for yourself.
I am safe.
I'm allowed to rest.
And just really anchor in to this moment for yourself to relax,
To pause,
To regroup.
And let's take one final deep breath in through the nose and out from the mouth.
And just take a moment to acknowledge that your body has been working hard,
Even in stillness.
And motivation,
It ebbs,
It dips,
It spikes.
This is all part of the human experience.
And it may dip when the system is tired.
That doesn't mean you're broken or you lack motivation.
You may simply just need a little restoration and recharge before momentum.
So I invite you today to take one small,
Kind action towards something that's important to you.
Something small and manageable without demanding a full comeback.
If there's anything that you've been working on,
That you've been trying to accomplish,
And the motivation just isn't there,
Just take a moment to pause and choose one small action towards that thing.
You don't have to regain your full motivation that you had at the start.
Just give yourself a little bit of movement forward.
Be kind to yourself.
Thank you so much for joining me today for this meditation.
