We can’t fix people, and we can’t fix culture. That’s simply and completely the wrong mindset. We take a seat next to the people creating a culture and listen. Then we do what’s needed to heal, evolve, adapt, and shift the culture to serve the vision, mission, and values of our organization. This practice illuminates what it means to be a culture keeper (not a killer) and ground in the foundation of what that looks like for personal embodiment. It ends with reciting the "Culture Keeper Credo".

Welcome to this Culture Keeper practice to illuminate the power and influence you have at all times.

I'm Mary Beth Hyland,

Workplace Culture Consultant and teacher here on Insight Timer.

In today's active break,

I'll be reading an excerpt from my book,

Permission to be Human,

Followed by a guided practice that will support you in grounding in what matters so that you can step forward with a personal sense of power,

Influence,

And alignment.

We can't fix people and we can't fix culture.

That's simply and completely the wrong mindset.

We can take a seat next to the people creating the culture and listen.

Then we do what's needed to heal,

Evolve,

Adapt,

And shift the culture to serve the vision,

Mission,

And values of our organization.

Everyone creates the culture around them.

People tend to fall into two categories,

Culture keepers and culture killers.

Culture keepers are the individuals who lead and maintain the positive aspects of their organization's environment,

A reflection of the company's core values.

They are often the center of positive work experiences.

Culture killers,

On the other hand,

Are the people who are both actively and passively taking away from the positive work experience.

They violate the company values.

And sadly,

These folks have the power to take down a whole team of culture keepers.

Here's the deal.

We all have the power to shift from being a killer to a keeper.

It starts by having self-awareness.

This isn't a set-in-stone label,

But rather a starting point on your journey to alignment.

When you're on the path of a culture keeper,

It's your responsibility to look in the mirror,

Do the work,

And help yourself first.

Then light your torch of wisdom to illuminate the path of possibilities for others to help themselves on.

Point out the obstacles and do your best to not fix or judge.

Keep igniting more torches so they can carry their own light forward into a path of personal well-being and values alignment.

When you give yourself and others permission to be human,

Your life and the lives you've touched will have more meaning.

As you move through your journey in embodying the qualities of a conscious,

Values-aligned,

Mindful culture keeper,

I want to provide you with a list of powerful reminders in the form of mantras and affirmations.

The following is what I call the culture keeper credo.

By definition,

A credo is a statement of the beliefs or aims which guide someone's actions.

It is intended to remind you of your power and influence in every environment you are a part of.

Should you feel called,

You can join me in closing your eyes,

Taking long,

Deep breaths through your nose with one hand on your heart.

You can choose to either repeat these phrases out loud or in your mind,

Whatever will serve you best.

At the sound of the chime,

The credo will be complete.

I choose to be a culture keeper and not a killer.

I am a conscious,

Grounded and mindful leader.

I own the energy I create in the world.

My behaviors reflect our values and ignite purpose in my life.

When out of alignment,

I hold myself and others lovingly accountable.

And in doing so,

I give myself and my team permission to be human.

Now step forward in this knowing and make choices that will serve you on your journey to being an authentic culture keeper.

This is Mary Beth Hyland reminding you to be a culture keeper so that you can give yourself and others permission to be human.
