Welcome to Michelle's Sanctuary.
I'm Michelle and I'm grateful you found your way here.
Allow my voice to be a comforting ally on a cozy night,
The nurturing sound of a dear friend.
I was raised in upstate New York,
Spending many September days running through the rows of empires and Macintoshes at a friend's apple orchard.
Stone cottages and historic farmhouses were a familiar place for me to visit.
The creaking floors and sense of fire burning wood stoves brought a sense of home and a deep connection to upstate New York's history.
After spending the past weekend in the Hudson Valley,
I was inspired to create a story that takes us to the most cozy stone cottages set against the perfect backdrop of autumn's gilded palette.
I hope this setting fuzzy warm feelings for you in the same way it has for me.
As always,
Customize the details to suit your desires tonight and fall asleep whenever you wish.
We're going to enjoy a short meditation together to set the tone for this idyllic getaway.
So stretch and adjust your body to release any tension and find your most comfortable position before you come to stillness.
Let out a sigh,
Making a gentle sound as you exhale.
Then breathe in the air slowly,
Imagining the crisp sweet scents of fallen leaves and apples on the perfect fall afternoon in the Hudson Valley.
Sense your space transforming,
Becoming the heart of an old stone cottage beneath a canopy of fiery red maple trees in full autumnal splendor.
Let out a long gentle sigh,
Releasing any lingering thoughts from the day or concerns that don't serve you now.
As you inhale,
Feel the cool dry air as it warms in your nose,
Carrying a hint of wood smoke.
Perhaps you yawn at the top of your breath and then let out another sigh.
You may continue to breathe and sigh at the rhythm and tempo that feels right to you now as I count us down.
The more relaxed you become,
The easier it is for your imagination to carry you to Orchard Lane.
Five,
Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose,
Connecting with a sweet scent of damp earth and the subtle aroma of burning wood.
All the muscles in your body find softness,
Surrendering like leaves floating on a gentle stream.
Four,
A deep sense of gratitude washes over you as you appreciate the gifts autumn brings,
A chance for change,
For drawing inward and for intentionally crafting cozy moments.
Three,
Waves of comfort and peace undulate through you in bands of autumnal colors,
Vibrant reds and oranges,
Amber and gold,
Wine and deep plum,
Helping you find comfort on a cellular level.
Two,
Your muscles soften,
Your joints find more space,
You take up more room as your face relaxes in a delicious surrender.
You envision the coziness of firelight from a wood stove.
Its warmth gently flows from the crown of your head down your spine and the front of your torso.
It continues to soothe your arms and legs,
Leaving a delightful sensation in your palms and the soles of your feet.
One,
Imbued with the coziness of fall,
Your eyelids are shutters on the night as you connect with your inner sanctuary and the awe-inspiring details as the story plays out vividly like a dream.
Your breath slips into a natural sleepy rhythm as the story unfolds.
The Hudson Valley is a storied region.
Each season,
A setting for Irving's headless horsemen,
Where the brushstrokes of autumn are vibrant and alive.
Orchards rife with red apples,
Rustic scarlet barns,
Rolling hills,
And idyllic countryside roads are postcard-worthy displays of perfect cozy getaways.
The whispers of the past stirred alive as fallen gold and magenta leaves swirl and spin in mini cyclones and the presence of the past reveals itself in an unspoken soul-deep connection that defies words and reason.
The energy here is distinct and grand.
Deer meander through the fields,
Bunnies hop across the lawns,
And squirrels gather acorns.
Their intuitive awareness of the nearing winter,
Making the golden light of autumn and its harvests feel all the more vital.
The Catskill Mountains frame the landscape,
Shaped more like the humps of camels' backs than jagged ice-capped mountains on the west coast.
Their purple-black silhouette at sunset feels calmer and more reserved,
Rolling like smooth dark waves against sorbet-hued skies.
No matter the time in history,
No matter the happenings,
The majesty and deep calm of this region permeates the air with a resounding sense that everything will be okay.
And for those beauty-seekers throughout time,
The bounty unfolds before you as you pedal down one of the oldest residential streets in the village,
With stone cottages going back to the late 1700s.
Honeyed light leads the way,
Pouring over your face with a warmth of summer,
As a breeze rustles through the canopy of crimson red,
Fiery orange,
And deep gold leaves overhead.
The soft wind opens the aromas of the valley,
A sweet hint of decaying leaves,
A touch of old stone,
And the smell of hearty autumnal meals wafting out of the local tavern.
It's not hard to imagine what life was like centuries ago,
As nature's rhythm is just as vibrant.
From the meandering curves of the old country road,
The pace is slow and soothing,
As summer's long days are a fading memory,
And the harvest season arrives like a delicate sigh.
You find yourself at the beginning of Orchard Lane,
Riding a loner vintage teal bicycle,
Its front ivory basket overflowing with bright mums.
Dozens of vintage bikes are offered by the village for this annual gathering,
Well-maintained and painted in vibrant hues of marigold yellow,
Raspberry pink,
And candy apple red.
Other attendees begin their own tours of the stone cottages,
Some riding horses,
While others settle in tractor-led wagons brimming with hay.
The late afternoon air is warm,
With but just a hint of coolness felt in the shade.
The golden light filters through the trees,
Kissing the back of your neck,
As you glide along the quiet old country road.
Your feet are clad in comfortable boots.
You wear a sweater and soft denim jeans,
Dressed in your favorite autumnal colors.
You ride along,
And the soft crunch of your tires may be heard as they land on the first handfuls of fallen leaves.
The light becomes an otherworldly gold,
Filtering through the branches of old maple and oak trees,
Whose leaves are fiery red and deep russet.
The glistening Sun contrasts the gentle cool breeze of the Catskill Mountains.
Passing by the stone dwellings,
You make your way toward your first stop on the self-guided tour to enjoy an early supper at Cassidy's Tavern,
A stone cottage from 1761 that was transformed into a restaurant a century later.
The tires of the bike crunch atop the gravel driveway,
And you hop off and park the bike in a rack,
Decorated with cornstalks and ornamental corn.
The stone dwelling features a side and back screened-in porch where guests dine,
With views overlooking the mountains and nearby apple orchards.
The two-story stone cottage features mulberry-hued shutters and ornate windows that give views of each dining section within.
As you open the plum-hued front door,
The aroma of fire-roasted vegetables and butternut squash soup welcomes you.
This warm,
Savory scent mingles with the clean country air that rushes in behind you.
The front room gives way to a wide expanse of stone that leads to a long polished oak bar with cranberry upholstered stools and a scattering of pub tables.
To the right and left,
More private,
Elegant dining halls are themed,
One paying homage to the 1700s,
While the other captures the pioneer spirit of the 19th century.
A hostess greets you and finds your name in the reservation book.
She leads you up the narrow,
Creaking wooden stairs to the cozier upstairs dining room.
The space is a deep,
Tranquil gold dotted with the glow of lanterns and the light of a burning fire.
The mantle features dried autumnal flowers in antique vases and hand-woven baskets abundant with gourds and small pumpkins.
Brass candelabras are arranged throughout the room as long,
Tapered candles burn,
Leaving the slightest aroma of melting wax in the air.
A few guests converse quietly,
Their voices echoing across the room.
The utensils make a quiet,
Rhythmic clinking sound against the plates.
Although there are only a few people here,
It is alive with a quiet reverence and you feel as if you've landed in a different time,
In this place where generations have earned their living from the land.
You breathe in deeply,
Letting the warm,
Fragrant air your nose and connect you to this unique moment.
Two cathedral windows open out to a Juliet balcony,
Framing the most peaceful yet vibrant view of the autumn foliage you've seen so far.
The hostess guides you to a small table dressed in a lace tablecloth,
Where you watch birds take flight as they prepare to head south.
The soft rustle and crunch of the leaves joins the ambient sounds of the room as you enjoy a three-course meal,
Offering the heartwarming,
Savory tastes of the season harvested from local farms.
Sunlight cascades through the open windows,
Illuminating dustboats that dance to the same song that guides the newly freed leaves that are drawn to the earth outdoors.
The light's molten hues compete with the dancing firelight in the hearth of this dining room outside.
Some of the leaves are merely blushing amidst the fading greens,
While others are at their peak autumnal hues.
Course by course is delivered to you and you savor the tastes that have resurrected recipes from long ago.
The soothing energy of clinking crystal glasses and utensils is a calming soundtrack to your meal and you take your time enjoying everything and feeling so much a part of this moment.
Satiated and full,
You rise from your seat and walk back downstairs,
Ready to continue your tour before the Sun disappears for the night.
You circle back to your awaiting bicycle and ease yourself onto the seat,
The wheels moving gently on the gravel of the lane as the tavern and its vibrant energy begin to recede behind you.
The sounds of the tavern are soon replaced by the landing pats of leaves on the lane and the distant whistles of a cargo train that chugs along the Hudson.
The air feels quite cooler now and you can sense the day's transition as you ride along Orchard Lane.
You take your time enjoying the strength in your arms and legs that you feel with each smooth pedal.
The golden sunlight guides you with its shimmering path across the lane,
Now littered with a vibrant mosaic of leaves.
The hills of the Hudson Valley are a stunning backdrop.
Their forested slopes ablaze and red and gold with a few barren trees appearing along the higher elevations.
Old stone walls along the lane feature silly scarecrows seated like Humpty Dumpty,
Some holding baskets of pumpkins and ornamental corn,
Daring the scavengers of the forest to pursue their luck.
You glide along past other visitors,
Some moving by foot,
Other pausing to tether their horses to posts.
A gaggle of small children arrives,
Rejuvenated from their recent apple-picking adventures.
You veer off to a lesser-visited stone cottage around a small bend and park your bicycle.
Now the home of two local teachers,
The current owners look forward every year to welcoming the public into their cottage.
The weathered lavender gray shingles and white trim glow in the fading light,
Offering a neutral canvas for the simple yet elegant autumn decor.
A stone chimney rises from the gabled roof and a tiny plume of smoke trails through the cornflower blue sky.
Lanterns line the cobbled path where cornstalks are carefully arranged.
Two porch swings are adorned with burgundy,
Orange,
And gold cushions with leaf designs.
Fluffy ivory blankets drape over their backs.
A wreath of dried leaves hangs on the light purple door along with a wooden sign that reads,
The Healers Haven.
The entire cottage is a vision of autumn,
As are many of the stone cottages that are often decorated to celebrate each season in the Hudson Valley.
The trees around the cottage are a mix of white birch trees and old maples.
There leaves a breathtaking array of yellow,
Rust,
And red.
The air becomes crisper as sunset approaches,
Smelling sweeter with an even stronger arrival of wood smoke in the air.
You approach the trellis that leads to the cottage.
The stone cottages of Orchard Lane always smell the best when fall arrives and the air becomes crisp and dry.
In summer,
While they offer cool refuge,
They smell of damp river stones.
But come fall,
They are toasty and dry with crackling fires in wood stoves and hearths and baking spices and apples that simmer on stovetops or baked pumpkin breads and pies that cook in the oven.
As you open the front door,
A soft,
Welcoming light spills out.
The interior is a warm,
Glowing haven that embodies everything one might expect in the perfect storybook stone cottage.
Every nook and surface is a celebration of the weekend festival,
Offering photos and paintings of the stone cottages for sale.
Piles of patchwork quilts in every shade of autumn,
Pumpkin orange,
Burgundy,
Cranberry,
Burnt sienna,
Mustard yellow,
And amber are folded over the furniture and arranged carefully on a vintage farmhouse table display.
Tabitha,
One of the owners,
An 11th grade English teacher,
Welcomes you with a cup of hot spiced cider.
A perfect tonic to soothe the lightest chill of an autumn evening encroaching.
She invites you into her home with a sparkle in her eye.
She gets true delight with a chance to act as host during this annual tradition.
She proudly tells you about one of the home's earlier residents,
A young woman who was a renowned healer in the 1800s,
Making potions and tonics with herbs and flowers and acting as a local midwife.
The cottage honors her with lavender wreaths above the fireplace and a framed locket that the woman once wore is now on display on the stone mantle.
A profound peace settles over you in this cottage as though the very stones hold a shared energy and a similar calling across the ages.
The healing presence radiates from the ancient walls themselves which feel as though they could tell a thousand stories for every soul that has ever found rest here.
Tabitha leads you through a sewing and craft room abundant with both autumnal accents and items for the upcoming holiday season.
She jokes that she's always on to the next crafting quest.
In a sunroom,
Light filters through the leaded windows to refract in the dozens of crystals and sun catchers strung about the room.
It's a beautiful,
Prismatic oasis with floor cushions and a wall-to-ceiling bookshelf overflowing with beloved literature.
As you finish the tour,
Tabitha brings you to the parlor and dining room where many of her quilts,
Candles,
And crafts are for sale.
She explains the funds from her sales,
Help her bring students on writers retreats,
Fostering the talents of those in the region who could benefit from the help.
Your fingers brush across the patterns and fabrics until you decide on an item that calls to you.
Tabitha carefully wraps the item and ties it with twine,
Thanking you for your support.
You wander out into the cool air and meander down a dirt path to a neighboring stone cottage.
Quite different in design and ambiance,
This cottage once served as the home to a blacksmith.
A small gray barn sits just beyond the cottage,
Saturated with a light of sunset.
You tour the space without a guide amidst others,
Noting the more rustic,
Clean,
And simple decor.
In side,
Old tools,
Horseshoes,
And ironwork hang from the exposed beams.
And a sweet yellow lab sleeps soundly by the fire,
A peaceful guardian of the home's history.
The pup stirs when a little girl enters the cottage with her parents and older brother,
Awakening for the chance to receive a few pets from her tiny hands.
Their brief encounter makes you smile as she asks her dad,
Can we get a dog?
For her sake,
You hope he says yes as you step back outside and the first waves of tiredness arrive.
The Sun is now a fiery orb on the horizon,
Its last light bleeding across the sky as it dips behind the Catskill Mountains.
The air is still and silent as if the world is holding its breath in this quiet,
Soothing pause before dusk.
The peaceful moment settles over you.
You watch as the leaves fall and dance in the air,
A silent ballet of red,
Orange,
And gold that match the bands of sunset hues overhead.
You settle back onto the seat of the bicycle and with a few soft pushes,
You ride into the sunset.
The sky deepens into the blues of twilight,
Blending seamlessly with the horizon as the first stars begin to show.
Their twinkle will soon be concealed by incoming storm clouds that hint at a rainstorm.
The wind picks up as you make your way uphill,
Coming to the end of Orchard Lane where the Applewood B&B awaits.
The crickets chirp,
Their songs even more robust and lively with fall's arrival.
You wrap your arms around yourself as night brings a slight chill,
Clutching your wrapped gift against your chest.
Iron lanterns line the pathway to the bed and breakfast,
Which features five guestrooms,
Each one named after a different apple varietal.
You have booked the Honeycrisp Suite,
A charming room facing the orchards and mountains.
You step into the main room that celebrates the cozy essence of apple season.
Every detail represents the Hudson Valley and its history.
The room's decor features a palette of deep reds and creamy ivory.
An oversized plush area rug with its delicate pattern of cream and soft red covers the shiny hardwood floor.
Chenille throes in shades of crimson and gold drape over cream velvet sofas and overstuffed armchairs that surround the stone hearth.
Fairy lights are strung throughout the room.
They drape around exposed dark wooden beams with boughs of dried flowers and cinnamon sticks that fill the air with their scent.
Smaller lights twinkle around large red ceramic planters overflowing with spider plants and monstera.
Old brass lanterns illuminate apple orchard oil paintings that hang on the walls.
Their saturated hues taking on a metallic luster in the golden light.
On an antique coffee table,
A few flickering candles and a worn copy of the legend of Sleepy Hollow await,
Adding to the perfect atmosphere of a magical autumn evening.
The resident cat,
A fluffy Maine Coon named Priscilla,
Stretches before the fire and rolls over to playfully reveal her tummy.
The innkeeper has set out a pot of cranberry and apple space tea,
A perfect tonic to soothe your throat in this dry air as the cool evening unfolds.
You pour some for yourself and wrap your hands around the warm mug,
Feeling your cold fingers quickly becoming warm.
Autumn jazz piano songs play from a record player mixing with the crackling wood in the hearth to create a soothing song.
You ascend the stairs,
Gentle creak with each step,
Balancing the mug of tea and the gift you bought yourself earlier.
Priscilla is not far behind you,
Following curiously.
As you enter your room,
Marked the honeycrisp sweet,
You feel right at home.
The room carries on the theme of the Applewood B&B with artistic nods to orchards and the stone cottages on Orchard Lane.
A king-sized bed sits in the heart of the room,
Elegantly made with a cream and crimson quilt with apples embroidered around its edges.
Sheer cream curtains frame floor to ceiling windows that reveal a distant sparkling stream meandering through the autumn woods and storm clouds that roll in fast over the Catskills.
Fire licks the glass door of a small wood stove in the corner,
A promise of warmth and comfort as the rain arrives.
You step into the ensuite to draw a bath in the clawfoot tub where caramel apple bubble bath soap awaits,
Its scent filling the air.
As you relax and unwind in a bubble bath,
The first raindrops begin to patter on the windowpanes.
Waves of tiredness wash over you and you rise,
Towel off,
Prepare for bed.
You return to your bedroom to find Priscilla snuggled at the foot of the bed,
Curled up in a ball.
The windows are slightly ajar and the smell of clean rain and the cool air circulate through the room.
You pull back the quilt and topsheet and climb atop the high mattress,
Sinking into its supportive comfort.
Priscilla purrs along to the rain and the charm of Orchard Lane lulls you to soothing,
Timeless dreams of autumn in the Hudson Valley.
Finding serenity.
Finding grace.
Finding peace.
Finding sleep.
It's time to sleep.
