Hello friends,
This is Mark Ludman,
Also known as Brother Frederick James,
Your friendly neighbourhood monk in docks.
Welcome.
This is another in our series of breath prayers,
And so as we begin,
I invite you to just take a moment to bring yourself fully into this time,
Your mind,
Your body,
And your heart,
All present,
All here,
All aligned with one another,
And just notice your breathing.
Again,
No need to change it,
Just to notice and to settle into this time.
There's a very simple prayer at the very end of scripture.
Come,
Lord Jesus.
The original phrase was Maranatha.
It's not complicated,
But it's longing.
A quiet cry from people who both knew hope,
But also uncertainty as well.
People who trusted that Christ was present,
And yet still found themselves saying,
Maranatha.
Come,
Lord Jesus.
And maybe you know something of that feeling.
Moments when life feels full,
And yet something in you is still reaching.
Reaching for presence.
And this prayer gives some shape to that longing.
Not because Jesus is far away,
But because we so often are.
We're distracted,
We're pulled in different directions because of our worries and concerns.
We're not fully here.
So this prayer becomes a gentle returning.
We'll pray it now as a breath prayer.
As you breathe in,
Come.
And as you breathe out,
Lord Jesus.
Or if you prefer breathing in,
Mara.
And as you breathe out,
Natha.
Mara.
Let the words rest lightly on your breath.
No need to make anything happen,
Just openness to the moment.
So let's begin.
Breathing in.
Breathing out.
Lord Jesus.
Or breathing in,
Mara.
Breathing out,
Natha.
As you continue to pray,
Imagine that this isn't calling someone in from far away,
But more like opening a door to someone who's standing right there,
A quiet welcome.
Breathing in.
Come.
Breathing out.
Lord Jesus.
If your mind wanders,
Just gently return.
Just come back and begin again.
Breathing in.
Come.
Breathing out.
Lord Jesus.
If you're feeling a weight of some kind,
Just notice what you're carrying.
Don't analyze it or judge it,
Just notice.
And as you breathe,
Let the prayer make space for it.
Breathing in.
Come.
Breathing out.
Lord Jesus.
Nothing you need to prove.
Nothing you need to earn.
Just the simple openness.
Come.
Lord Jesus.
Mara.
Natha.
Now just gently allow the words to fall away,
But remain in that posture of welcome.
As we close our time in prayer.
Lord Jesus.
You who are already nearer than I realize.
Teach me to welcome you.
In my distractions,
Come.
In my longing,
Come.
In the ordinary moments I overlook,
Come.
Not as one far away,
But as the one who is already here.
And as I breathe this prayer,
Form in me a heart that recognizes your presence in all things.
Amen.
And when you're ready,
Gently bring yourself back and return your awareness to your surroundings.
And carry this quiet welcome prayer with you into the rest of your day.
Continuing your breath prayer of come,
Lord Jesus.
Mara Natha.
And may grace,
Peace and love go with you,
Be with you and remain with you today and always.
Amen.
Until tomorrow.
Bye for now.
