Welcome,
Friends.
In today's meditation,
We turn our attention to the energy of communication,
Expression,
And deep listening,
The energy of the throat chakra,
Known in yoga as the Vishuddha chakra.
This energy center governs how we speak,
How we listen,
How we reveal ourselves,
And how we allow others to be revealed to us.
Physically,
It spans from the collarbones to the sinuses,
Encompassing the vocal cords,
The mouth,
And the ears.
It reminds us that communication is not only about being heard,
It's also about hearing.
For those of us navigating retirement,
Especially within a marriage or a long-term partnership,
This chakra becomes especially important.
Retirement often with anticipation,
More time together,
Shared mornings,
Fewer deadlines.
And yet,
Alongside this gift can come unexpected shifts.
Long-held routines dissolve and roles that once felt clear become uncertain.
The identity shaped by our career and contributions may feel altered,
And the simple fact of constant proximity to our partner can sometimes bring friction where there was once space.
These transitions are natural.
In this new era of our life,
Communication becomes essential.
Having honest conversations about independence,
Shared responsibilities,
Personal space,
And evolving dreams create room for mutual respect.
When both partners feel heard,
Not fixed,
Not corrected,
Not dismissed,
The transition softens.
If you speak your needs clearly and listen with openness,
It allows retirement to become not a loss of identity,
But an expansion of it.
Let's now practice awakening this energy center.
Go ahead and take a comfortable seat.
Rest your hands in your lap or on your thighs,
And if it feels safe,
Go ahead and close your eyes or lower your gaze.
Take a slow,
Steady breath in and gently release it.
Again,
Inhale and exhale.
Now,
Allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm.
There is nothing to fix,
Nothing to control.
Simply observe the rise and fall of your breath.
Bring your awareness to the center of your throat.
Imagine that each inhale carries a clear,
Luminous,
Blue light into this space,
And imagine exhaling back out through the throat.
Let each breath spread that glowing blue light to every cell in your body.
As you inhale,
Allow your inner voice to awaken.
As you exhale,
Release any fear of being misunderstood.
As you inhale,
Allow yourself to hear another person's view or truth.
And as you exhale,
Release any intentions to block or need to defend.
Notice if any tightness lives in the throat,
Perhaps unspoken words,
Swallowed frustrations,
Or withheld desires.
There's no need to analyze them.
Simply let the breath move through them,
Softening and loosening.
The vibrational seed sound or Bija mantra of the throat chakra is HAAM.
H-A-A-M,
HAAM.
On your next inhale,
Breathe in gently.
And on your exhale,
Chant HAAM.
Let the sound vibrate in your throat.
Feel it resonate through your neck,
Jaw,
Ears,
And mind.
Again,
Inhale.
And exhale,
HAAM.
If you prefer,
You can repeat it silently in your mind.
The vibration still exists.
Continue with this mantra at your own pace until you hear the sound of a bell.
Friends,
It's time to release the mantra.
Allow yourself to return to a normal breath.
Notice the sensations in your throat.
Notice any shift,
However subtle,
In openness or ease.
Retirement is more than just a shift in routine.
It's also a shift in relationship.
It invites us to rediscover who we are,
Both individually and together.
The throat chakra teaches us that true listening is love expressed through attention,
And that honest words offered with compassion create connection with our partner instead of division.
When you're ready,
Slowly open your eyes or lift your gaze and come back to the space around you.
Carry this energy with you.
Your voice matters,
And so does your listening.
Namaste.
