Welcome.
This is Pamela Stahler.
Thank you for being here with me in this moment.
Let's take a bit of time to get comfortable.
Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
Relax your jaw.
Let your shoulders soften and drop.
And begin to slow your breathing.
Settle back and take in your first impression of our words of wisdom for this session.
Attributed to author Timber Hawkeye.
You can't calm the storm,
So stop trying.
What you can do is calm yourself.
The storm will pass.
Before we begin to delve deeper into these words,
Let's take a few minutes to release stress and calm our minds with a short relaxation.
From your position of comfort,
Take a deep,
Slow breath in through your nose.
And exhale fully through your mouth or nose.
Continue this inhale,
Exhale pattern.
Let it be slow.
Let it be natural.
Let it be easy.
Feel your body getting heavy.
Feel the surface beneath you holding you.
Now,
As you continue to breathe in and out slowly,
Comfortably,
Bring your awareness to the top of your head.
Notice any areas of tightness or discomfort.
Bring your breath to the top of your head.
And with your inhale,
Welcome relaxation.
With your exhale,
Release tension.
Picture any tension dissolving like a mist,
Leaving the top of your head supple and at ease.
Now,
Bring your awareness to your face.
Soften the muscles around your eyes,
Your cheeks,
Your mouth,
Your jaw.
Breathe in relaxation to your face.
Breathe out any tension,
Letting it dissolve and drift away.
Bring your awareness to your neck and shoulders.
Let your neck soften.
Let your shoulders drop.
Breathe in relaxation to your neck and shoulders.
Breathe out tension.
Soften.
Ease.
Bring awareness to your arms and hands.
Let them lie heavy,
Relaxed.
Breathe relaxation into your arms and hands.
Breathe out tension.
Bring awareness to your torso,
Your chest and back.
Expand your lungs within your torso with a nourishing fullness.
And slowly breathe it out,
Letting go of any tightness you may have been holding.
Bring awareness to your lower body,
Your hips,
Legs and feet.
Let them lie heavy and relaxed.
Allow the surface beneath you to hold them.
Breathe relaxation into your lower body and breathe out any tension or tightness.
Let your body soften.
Continue to breathe naturally.
Release any thoughts that arise,
Blowing them away with your breath,
Like wispy clouds in a breezy sky.
Allow yourself to simply rest,
To open,
To be at ease for these next few moments.
Now gently bring your awareness back to these words.
You can't calm the storm,
So stop trying.
What you can do is calm yourself.
The storm will pass.
In nature,
Storms happen.
Visualize a summer storm.
Hear the rain.
See the lightning.
Feel the wind.
Smell the water as it falls on the hot earth.
Take a deep,
Calming breath and slowly exhale.
In nature,
Storms are caused by unstable air.
And while storms feel unstable,
They also serve a vital purpose.
They renew the ecosystem.
They balance the atmosphere.
They bring life-giving rain.
They cool the oceans.
And then,
They pass.
You can't calm the storm,
So stop trying.
What you can do is calm yourself.
The storm will pass.
In life,
Too,
Storms arise from instability.
They upend our routine,
Our sense of safety.
The wind roars.
The thunder crashes.
Our foundation trembles.
We want the storm to stop.
We want peace.
We want calm.
Take a deep,
Calming breath and slowly exhale.
And just as standing outside in a summer thunderstorm,
Yelling at the sky to stop its raging,
Will not calm the storm.
So,
Too,
Must we accept that we cannot stop life's storms.
As painful as they can be,
They are part of the cycle.
They may hurt.
They may damage.
And then,
They pass.
Take a deep,
Calming breath and slowly exhale.
Just as in nature,
Then,
Might storms,
After they dissipate,
Might they bring renewal?
Might they restore balance?
After they dissipate,
Might they result in conditions that nourish and cool?
You can't calm the storm,
So stop trying.
What you can do is calm yourself.
The storm will pass.
Repeat aloud,
In a whisper or silently,
The following.
I cannot calm the storm.
I can only control what is within my power.
I can calm myself.
The storm will pass.
The storm will pass.
The storm is not me,
And I am not the storm.
I can observe the storm without letting it in.
I come inside.
I watch the storm from my window.
I am safe.
I can calm myself.
The storm will pass.
I am stronger than this storm.
I have made it through other storms.
I will weather this storm as well.
I am calm.
The storm will pass.
I am calm.
The storm will pass.
I am calm.
The storm will pass.
You can't calm the storm,
So stop trying.
What you can do is calm yourself.
The storm will pass.
May these words,
Like seeds,
Take root and grow in your mind and soul,
Continuing to nourish you.
You can't calm the storm,
So stop trying.
What you can do is calm yourself.
The storm will pass.
End this session in the way that feels right for you.
If you would like to continue resting in calmness or contemplation,
Let your body and breath be soft.
You are calm.
You are present.
If you are ready to move on with your day,
Take a deep,
Deep breath.
A cleansing breath.
A gentle stretch.
And open your eyes.
If you would like to drift off to sleep,
Let go.
Release your thinking mind.
Settle.
And drift into slumber.
As we close this practice,
Wherever you are,
Whatever you do,
Know that you are safe.
You are whole.
You are on your path.
The universe is conspiring in your favor.
And all is well.
