Hello and welcome! Shelli Mermaid from Happy Mermaid Learning joins us again to help teach small children how to navigate the emotion of sadness. She uses a story about her friend Prince Davide Dolphin who lost his crown as a way of teaching emotional regulation, feeling the depth of their emotions safely and healthily, and exploring ways to take deep breaths and release physical pain caused by tough emotions. Thank you for listening. Best for children around 2-6 years old.

Hello and welcome!

Shelly Mermaid here.

Let's explore more emotions together today.

First,

Why don't we get into our comfortable listening and relaxing position.

Lay down on your back somewhere safe.

Are you there now?

Okay,

Now do a big stretch and put your arms down by your sides with the palms of your hands facing up towards the sky.

Very good.

Now take some deep breaths in and out,

Letting your tummy go up and down.

Good job.

Awesome.

Now I'm going to talk to you a tiny bit about emotions.

Then we can play a game,

Okay?

Can you think of some different types of emotions?

I have some examples.

See if what you think of matches my examples.

Okay,

Some types of emotions are happy,

Angry,

Excited,

Sad.

Today we can talk about the emotion of sadness.

Have you ever felt sad?

Can you think of a time where something made you feel so sad?

What did you do?

Maybe you cried,

Maybe you wanted to be alone,

Or maybe you wanted hugs and cuddles.

When I feel sad,

I don't always want the same thing.

Sometimes I want hugs and sometimes I want to be left alone.

Crying is a very healthy way to be sad.

It helps to get the tough emotions out of your body so that it doesn't hurt so much anymore.

Sometimes people will tell you it's not okay to cry.

That's usually because they don't understand how important it is.

If a grown-up tells you to stop crying,

Remember that crying is very healthy and helpful,

But maybe it will be safer to do it when you aren't around the grown-up who doesn't understand that.

Not everybody knows how to deal with emotions in a healthy way like you do,

Even grown-ups.

Remember,

It's always okay to feel your emotions.

I don't cry every single time that I'm sad,

But I do take a moment to breathe and feel how it feels in my body to be sad.

Even though it's an emotion,

It's funny because I can feel sadness in my tummy,

My throat,

Or in my chest sometimes.

Where do you feel it in your body when you're sad?

When you know where you feel it in your body,

It can help you to feel better.

Let me show you how.

Do you want to practice by doing a game with me?

Cool.

Let's play a game using my friend Prince Davide Dolphin as the main character.

We can pretend that we are Davide Dolphin together.

Do you know what sounds a dolphin makes?

Take a deep breath in and get lots of air in your tummy and then let out your dolphin sound all the way.

Good job!

Did your dolphin sound sound like mine?

Let's try to do it two more times together.

Breathe in and dolphin noise.

Wow,

Good job.

Davide would be so proud.

One more time.

Breathe in and out.

Okay,

Well,

Hang on a minute.

Those deep breaths made me feel so calm and balanced.

What about you?

Hmm,

Let's remember that for this story.

Okay,

So let me tell you a story about when Prince Davide lost his crown and how he dealt with his tough emotions.

Prince Davide always wears his golden crown and his purple cape.

One day when he was swimming in the ocean,

His friend Paola Estrella,

The starfish,

Said,

Oh no,

Davide!

I don't want to tell you this,

But your crown,

It is gone!

Oh no.

Davide felt in his chest a heavy feeling.

Go ahead and put one of your hands on your chest to feel where Davide felt his sadness.

Then he felt a turning and churning in his tummy.

Put one hand on your belly.

Poor Davide!

That crown was his favorite thing in the whole wide world.

His eyes welled up with tears and he began to cry.

Paola Estrella didn't know what to do.

It's okay,

She said.

Stop crying!

No me gusta!

This made Davide feel even more sad.

Paola was trying to help,

But it made him feel worse.

What do you think he should do?

He knows that crying is healthy,

But Paola doesn't seem to know that and she feels uncomfortable.

Is it healthy to cry?

What do you think?

Say it with me.

Yes!

One more time.

Is it healthy to cry?

Yes!

So what did Prince Davide do?

Let's find out.

He said,

Paola,

Gracias for telling me my crown is missing.

I'm going to get some privacy now.

And he swam away.

When he got to his room in the cove,

Finn the merman was there.

He saw Davide come in crying.

What's wrong?

What's happened?

Finn asked.

Davide explained that his crown was missing and how it made him feel so sad.

Finn said,

Well Davide,

I'll try and help you find it,

But you know it might be gone forever.

The sea is a very big place.

This made Davide cry even harder.

Finn said,

Don't worry,

Davide.

Crying is very healthy.

It helps you get out all of your tough emotions from your body.

Where in your body do you feel sad?

Do you remember where Davide feels sad in his body?

His,

That's right,

His chest and his belly.

That's right.

Finn said,

When I'm sad I take deep long breaths and one at a time I picture the pain in my body relaxing and going out with my breath.

Let's do it together.

You can even do this while you cry.

Take a deep long breath in and feel your heart relax.

Why don't you guys do this with Davide?

Okay,

Deep long breath in,

Feel your heart relax.

Now take a big breath out and picture all of the pain from sadness going out of your body.

Now take another big breath in,

Making your tummy very big and full like a balloon,

And let it out.

Squeezing all of the sadness out of your belly when you blow that air out.

Hey,

This kind of reminds me of our dolphin breaths.

Should we do another dolphin breath?

Big breath in,

Then make your dolphin noise.

Oh my gosh,

Good job.

How do you think Davide felt after letting himself cry and taking big slow breaths?

He was definitely still sad,

But you know what?

It didn't hurt in his body so much anymore.

Once he did several more healing breaths in and out,

He and Finn found Paola Estrella and they all went looking for Prince Davide's crown together.

And you know what?

This time they were so lucky and they found it.

The real amazing thing from this day was not that they found his crown,

But that Davide learned that even when he feels so,

So sad,

He can make himself feel better in a healthy way just from crying and breathing and allowing himself to feel his emotions until they slowly pass.

Thank you so much for being so,

So patient and listening to my story about sadness today.

I hope the next time you're sad,

You remember to take big breaths,

Feel where it hurts in your body,

Cry if it feels right,

And know that it's okay to feel sad.

Now take a big stretch with your arms,

Big,

Big,

Big stretch,

And open your eyes.

One more deep breath in,

Let it out,

And we're all done.

Great job!

I can't wait to see you next time.
