The Girl Who Walked Through Worlds Part 3: A Bedtime Story
by Sally Clough
Hello, beloveds. This is a short story that I wrote about a grieving young girl named Mia, who, after the loss of her parents, receives a mysterious letter sealed with a silver crescent moon. It invites her to Willowmere Mansion, sent by a stranger named Miss Elsbeth Dalloway. Encouraged by her aunt, Mia accepts, and an adventure begins. This is the final part of a three-part series. Music is generously provided by Nature's Eye. Thank you for listening, and I hope you sleep well, dear ones.

stretches maybe a yawn or some deeper breaths get yourself nice and comfortable ready to hear the remainder of the story and when you're ready dear ones we shall begin as the days continue to unfold in this strange magical world maya began to feel a change within herself a quiet sense of peace mixed with the lingering excitement of all the adventures still ahead she knew that every trial she faced brought her closer to something deeper something beyond the challenges themselves it wasn't long before miss elspeth took her to a new place a vast shimmering bridge suspended high above the clouds the bridge stretched far into the distance its surface reflecting the sky like a mirror it was beautiful but there was something unsettling about it something that maya couldn't quite place this is the bridge of silent words miss elspeth said here you will be tested not by what you say but by what you are afraid to say maya frowned what do you mean the words that we hold back the ones we don't speak can be the heaviest burdens that we carry miss elspeth explained this bridge will force you to confront those silences you must find the courage to speak what you have kept locked away in your heart maya's heart skipped a beat the idea of speaking the words she had kept inside her for so long made her stomach twist there were things she had never told anyone not even herself the fears the regrets the anger she had buried deep do i have to speak them aloud maya asked her voice barely above a whisper yes miss elspeth said simply but you are not alone the bridge will listen and in doing so you will find your way across taking a deep breath maya stepped onto the bridge the ground beneath her feet soft but unyielding the air was thick with a strange almost tangible silence and as she walked the world around her began to blur at first the silence felt comforting a reply from the chaos of the world but then it grew oppressive as if the very absence of sound were pressing against her chest the further she walked the more the silence grew until it felt like it was swallowing her whole maya felt as though she couldn't breathe couldn't think she wanted to shout to break the silence but the words wouldn't come it was as if something inside her was holding her back urging her to stay silent to keep everything bottled up you must speak maya miss elspeth's voice echoed softly the words you are afraid to say are the ones you need to release maya stopped in her tracks her heart pounding what do i say what words are buried inside me i haven't let out she closed her eyes the memories flooding her mind the anger she had never expressed toward the world for taking her parents the guilt she felt for surviving when others hadn't the fear of being abandoned of never truly belonging anywhere the uncertainty of whether she was enough and then for the first time maya spoke i'm angry she whispered i'm angry that i lost my parents angry that the world feels so unfair i'm scared i'll never be enough that i'll always be alone the words tumbled out each one lighter than the last they weren't as heavy as she had imagined in fact it felt as though a weight was being lifted from her shoulders with every word i'm afraid i'll never stop missing them and i'm afraid i won't ever find my place in the world as she spoke the bridge beneath her feet began to change the air cleared and the once oppressive silence faded into the background replaced by a soft comforting hum the world around maya shifted no longer blurry but vivid and full of possibility you've done it maya miss elizabeth said appearing beside her a proud smile on her face you face the words you've been holding back you've released them into the world maya looked down at the bridge which now stretched out before her in the most beautiful way the surface gleaming in the sunlight i feel lighter maya admitted her voice filled with awe that's the power of speaking your truth miss elizabeth explained the weight of silence can keep us trapped but when we speak we set ourselves free maya took one final step crossing the bridge completely and the world on the other side welcomed her with open arms the journey continued and soon miss elizabeth guided maya to the next trial as they approached a towering structure that seemed to reach up into the very clouds maya felt a shiver of both awe and trepidation the tower of everlasting choices loomed ahead of them its stone walls dark and imposing every step closer felt like it carried the weight of a thousand decisions this is it miss elizabeth said this is the final trial maya here you will face the choices you have yet to make the ones that lie ahead of you this tower holds your future maya swallowed looking up at the towering spire the air felt thick with anticipation i don't understand how can i face my future if i don't know what it holds miss elizabeth smiled her eyes kind and knowing that's the challenge maya the future is uncertain but what you choose now will guide you toward the path that you want to create in life this is the place where your courage will determine the path that you walk maya hesitated the uncertainty of her future had always been her greatest fear she had spent so much of her life feeling lost unsure of where to go or who to become the weight of all those unanswered questions pressed heavily against her chest but then as if by magic the tower's doors creeped open revealing a swirling vortex of light maya stepped forward taking miss elizabeth's hand for support and entered the tower inside the air was thick with possibilities the wall shimmered with a thousand different paths each glowing with a unique color each path was a decision a choice a future the path stretched out before her twisting and turning like a labyrinth maya felt the pull of each one she could see herself living a life full of adventure or perhaps one of quiet reflection she could imagine herself becoming a teacher a traveler a protector of magical worlds every choice was a reflection of her hopes her dreams her fears you must choose maya miss elizabeth said slowly but remember it's not about picking the perfect path it's about engracing the one that feels true to you maya closed her eyes taking a deep breath she didn't have to choose right now she didn't have to know everything all she needed to do was trust herself and for the first time in a long time she felt ready to take the next step knowing that whatever choice she made she would be okay with a smile maya stepped onto one of the glowing paths her heart light her mind clear the future might still be uncertain but she was no longer afraid of it the path maya had chosen felt strangely comforting even as the landscape began to shift and change around her the tower of everlasting choices had revealed many possibilities but it was the journey forward that would define her with miss elizabeth by her side maya felt ready for whatever came next after walking for what seemed like hours they arrived in a tranquil breathtaking garden the air shimmered with an otherworldly glow and the trees seemed to hum with life their leaves silver and gold above them the sky was filled with a thousand glowing stars and in the distance the moon gleamed brightly it was a scene of serenity and wonder this is the moonlit garden of endless stars miss elizabeth said her voice soft as if reverent of the space they had entered it is a place of reflection where everything you've learned all that you've faced comes together here you will find peace maya and a sense of completion maya's heart fluttered in her chest she had grown accustomed to these trials each one pushing her further into the unknown but now as she stood in the moonlit garden she felt the weight of her journey a journey that had transformed her shaped her and brought her closer to the person she was meant to be she took a deep breath and stepped forward the soft grass beneath her feet feeling cool and comforting each star above her seemed to pulse with a gentle rhythm as though they were watching over her guiding her miss elizabeth walked alongside her a serene expression on her face you've done it maya you've faced fear regret and uncertainty you've spoken the unspoken and embraced the unknown you are no longer the girl who stepped into this world you've grown into someone who understands the value of bravery kindness and courage maya felt a tear slip down her cheek but it wasn't out of sadness it was the relief of knowing she had come so far she had faced every trial every challenge with her heart open even when it was difficult she had learned that the past didn't define her that the future wasn't something to fear and that within her there was an immense strength miss elizabeth smiled warmly at maya the final test maya is not about what lies ahead it's about understanding that everything you faced has led you here this garden is a symbol of your growth of all the worlds you've visited and all the lessons you've learned maya nodded taking it all in so what now now maya miss elizabeth said you will return to the world you came from but you will not be the same you have discovered your bravery your strength and your voice you've learned how to walk through time to release your fears and to choose your path you've become someone who understands the importance of remembering of speaking and of embracing the journey ahead for a moment maya didn't say anything she simply stood there taking in the beauty of the garden the stars the moon and everything she had experienced here I'm ready maya said I'm ready to go home miss elizabeth extended her hand and maya took it feeling a warm surge of energy flow through her the garden around them shimmered and the stars seemed to fade away replaced by a familiar view her old home maya felt a sudden pang in her chest as she realized she was standing in front of the grand mansion once more but something was different now she didn't feel lost or small she felt complete miss elizabeth smiled at her you've grown maya you found the courage to be yourself to let go of the past and embrace the future now it's time to create the life you want maya nodded her heart full of gratitude for everything she had learned she looked around at the mansion at the place where her new life had begun it no longer felt like a house full of shadows it felt like home thank you maya said her voice steady for everything miss elizabeth gave her a knowing smile remember maya the magic is not in the worlds you visited but in the choices you make every day you carry the strength of those worlds with you always with that miss elizabeth faded away leaving maya standing at the entrance to the mansion the sun setting behind her maya stood there for a long moment reflecting on all she had learned the trials had shaped her into someone strong someone who could face whatever came next as she stepped inside maya knew that her journey wasn't over it was just the beginning the mansion that had once seemed like a place of uncertainty now felt full of possibility maya's heart swelled with hope as she realized that the courage to change to move forward and to be herself was the greatest magic of all and in that moment maya understood something deeply she had always had the power to create the life she wanted it was within her all along
