Begin by lying comfortably on your back.
Let your hands rest wherever they feel most comfortable.
And as you lay comfortably on your back,
We'll go through progressive relaxation.
We'll start with the right leg.
If you can,
Lift the right leg up,
Hover it just a few inches,
Tense the muscles in the thigh,
In the knee,
In the foot,
The ankle.
Point the toes,
Then flex the foot,
And then let the leg drop back down.
Left leg.
Picking up the left leg just a few inches and tense the muscles in the leg,
The thigh,
The calf,
The ankle,
The foot.
Point the toes,
Then flex the foot,
And let it drop.
Right arm.
Hover it,
Squeeze the upper arm,
The forearm,
The wrist,
Make a fist with your hands,
Spread the fingers,
And then let it drop.
Left arm.
Pick it up,
Hover it,
And tense the upper arm,
The forearm,
Make fists,
Spread the fingers,
And then let it drop.
Squeeze the core muscles,
Press the lower back down,
Flatten the lower back,
Tight and tense,
And release.
Squeeze the face into one point,
Squeeze the eyes,
Squeeze the lips,
Squeeze the nose,
And then open the eyes,
Stick out the tongue,
And relax.
You can choose to stay on your back here,
Or now you can move into a more comfortable reclined position,
Perhaps on your side.
Just ensure your body is well supported and relaxed.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in through your nose,
And as you exhale to release the breath,
Release it through the mouth with a sigh.
Again,
Inhale through the nose,
Exhale through the mouth and sigh.
Last time,
Inhale through the nose,
Exhale with a sigh,
And begin to soften your body as you settle your breath into a natural,
Comfortable rhythm.
Soften your forehead and your face,
Soften your belly and your chest,
And let your arms and legs be heavy,
Well supported by the mattress beneath you.
Make any adjustments here as needed to be more comfortable and more supported.
Move your pillow,
Move the covers,
Adjust as needed,
And then settle yourself back down and take your attention to the top of your head.
A gentle awareness,
Not imagining the head,
Not focusing too hard.
Feel the connection of where your head is resting on your pillow or on the mattress.
And then let your attention,
Awareness,
Just sweep across your body.
Make the warm wave of sunshine softening as it moves.
Softening the forehead,
The muscles around the eyes,
The eyes in the sockets.
Loosening the jaw,
Relaxing the tongue.
Relax the neck and shoulders,
Let them sink a little deeper into the bed.
And feel that warm wave blow down your arms,
Elbows,
Wrists,
All the way to your fingers.
Feel your chest,
The breath calm and steady.
Notice your stomach,
Your belly,
Let it soften in whatever position it's in.
Feel your back,
Upper,
Mid,
And lower.
Relax with the rest of the breath.
And feel your back,
Your upper back,
Your mid back,
Your lower back.
Feel it soften and relax.
Using the next couple breaths to bring that relaxation.
Feel your hips heavy and supported.
Feel the thighs,
The knees,
The calves,
The ankles,
Your feet and toes.
Feel your body deeply relaxed.
If not,
There's still some tension.
Take a little extra time there.
Breathe into the area with each breath,
With each exhale.
Feel that area become heavier,
Sinking deeper into the mattress,
Softening a little more.
And as you lay,
Fully relaxed,
Well supported,
Comfortable,
Safe.
Feel yourself lying.
Imagine yourself lying in a quiet,
Peaceful place,
A soft meadow,
The warm sand of a beach.
Ears calm.
The world is quiet here.
You feel so comfortable,
So relaxed.
And with each exhale,
You sink a little deeper.
Feeling more safe,
More supported and more comfortable.
Just rest.
Just breathe.
Let the mind settle,
Soft,
Quiet.
And as the body settles a little more deeply,
Relaxes a little more,
Let the attention and the focus separate and drift away from the thoughts.
Maybe they still come like clouds in a sky,
Drifting in and out.
But as your body settles more deeply,
More comfortably,
They pass in and out with little disturbance,
Little disruption to the quietness,
To your peace,
To your comfort.
Your body,
So comfortable,
So safe,
Is now ready.
And now,
Let yourself drift.
Let yourself rest.
Let yourself sleep.
