In this soothing meditation, your child is invited to visualize or imagine a special or favorite place - one that evokes feelings of comfort, relaxation, and calm for both body and mind. This is an ideal meditation for helping children downregulate their nervous systems or gently drift into peaceful sleep. With regular practice, children will often return to this 'favorite place' on their own as a way to access predictability, security, and ease. *Favorite Place meditation was a beloved practice in my classroom. In this meditation,

You're invited to use your imagination to travel to a favorite place in your mind.

Think of it like an imagination adventure.

So let's begin.

Start by finding a position for your body that feels just right for you.

Have you found the just right spot?

You might now invite your body to become a little more peaceful by taking a few slow and deep breaths,

Breathing in through your nose like you're smelling a flower,

And then breathing out through your mouth like you're gently blowing out a candle.

Let's do that together for two or three in and out breaths.

Remember to breathe in like you're smelling a flower,

And then breathe out through your mouth like you're blowing out a candle.

Great job.

If it feels comfortable for you,

You might close your eyes now,

Or you can keep them open if that feels better.

You're invited to begin now to use your imagination to create some pictures in your mind of a favorite place where you feel comfortable and happy.

This could be a favorite place you've been to before,

Or one that you know about,

Or it could be a place that's completely made up by you.

Start to imagine a place that feels special and where you feel calm and happy.

What do you notice in your favorite place?

What can you hear?

What do you smell?

What do you see in your mind?

How does it make you feel to be in this favorite place?

Are you feeling relaxed and calm and happy?

I'll be quiet for just a moment while you keep noticing your favorite place and how it makes you feel.

In the next few breaths,

We'll begin to move out of this favorite place meditation and out of your favorite place in your mind.

But first notice the details of your favorite place one more time,

And know that you can return to this place in your mind any time you'd like.

I hope you feel a little more calm and happy as you fall gently into sleep or into the rest of your day or night.

Thank you for meditating with me.
