The Jenny Show. Note to self. We have some idea of how life is going to turn out. Or do we? I remember landing in Australia when I was two years old. I had no idea of the war that was happening in my birthplace. I was completely unaware to the bombs going off and the lives being lost around me. And being an oblivious, Restless toddler, My focus was on eating peanuts. My mother actually bought me a few packets to calm me on the long flight over. This one just needs to eat, Give her food and she'll be fine. Yes, I'm me. That's now been the case my entire life. Thank you for that. We landed to my very loud and very, Very, Very large family. I have a lot of cousins. I actually lost count of how many cousins I have. Everyone at some stage turns out to be a cousin. I have no idea how that's biologically possible. But it's gotten to a point that at any large party, Rannons walk up to me and say, Yo Jenny, Did you know we're cousins? Your amis, My dad's auntie, Step sisters, Brothers, Wife's niece, You know. I don't even really do a background check anymore. So if I happen to bump into you in the street and you tell me we're cousins, Chances are I'll believe you. At these gatherings, My aunties would greet me with open arms and a very loud. That's how my aunties kiss you. Except it never seemed like a kiss. It was like they were breathing me in or something. It would go, Ah, My ame after a long time, No? I need to put it. It is so good to see. Hello, Darling. As my aunties inhaled me every Christmas, Birthday and gathering, It got me thinking. Had we not have left Sri Lanka to come to the land down under, Where would I be? Would I be alive? Would I actually be able to speak English? As trivial as that sounds. Would my parents be able to afford the education that I needed to communicate the way that I do now? Would we be having this conversation? What do we actually know about our lives and where they'll go? My first day of prep. I remember the teacher, Miss Audrey, Handing all the kids in my class their book bins. Now, For you cool kids out there, These were the little tubs and little boxes where we used to put our school books in. Miss Audrey, Like me, Was brown, So I automatically liked her. Was I displaying traits of prejudice as a child? Dude, I was five going to a school in Northcote. I was looking for relatability. Miss Audrey looked around and said, Where's Virginia? Can Virginia put up her hand? Who is this Virginia? What kind of a name is that? I think this is you, Virginia. Oh, Virginia. That was my name? How sad was that? So in Australia, On your first day of school, You're asked to bring your school books, Your uniform and apparently your name? Why is my name Virginia? I asked Ami when I got home why she changed my name without my permission. Kute, Virginia is your middle name. The principal couldn't pronounce what we call you at home. That is why we changed your name. Are you serious? She couldn't say Tharushi? It kind of mimics the sound you make when you sneeze. Tharushi. If you can sneeze, You can say Tharushi. I mean, Maybe my classmates would have said bless you each time after, But still. Coming to think of it, It also kind of sounded like a disease. I'm so sorry to break this to you, But we found that you're suffering from a severe case of Tharushi. There's no cure. But I guess if Virginia weren't brought into the forefront, There'd be no Ginny, Would there? And the Ginny show is slightly more appealing than the Snee show. And now it's time for the Tharushi show! Here's Tharushi! Here's Tharushi! Bless you! When things don't turn out the way we hope, We're the first to throw a tantrum. Why didn't I get that job? Why doesn't she love me back? Why is my name Virginia? Why won't he call me back? Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we put so much energy into trying to control situations so things stay the same or as we think they should be? Every night before bedtime, Ami and I used to say a prayer together. Dear Jesus, I hope everyone had their dinner today and is safe at home. Please bring me some chocolate and some Ninja Turtle toys. They are two for nine dollars at Kmart. You're praying to Jesus, Not Santa Claus. My mother was my first teacher of many, Many valuable lessons. She taught me that sometimes you may not get what you want in life, But that's okay too. Everything happens for a reason, Puteh. Be thankful for everything that you have and everything that you don't have. That is for a reason also. Okay, So when she told me that I was five, All I wanted to do was go to Kmart and pick up some toys, So I didn't quite process the evolved concept she was telling me. I just wanted my Michelangelo piece, The turtle, Not the artwork. But she had a point, Right? Ever go through something in your life and think, Why am I going through this? Why is this person in my life? Why is this happening to me? Why do I feel like I'm an extra in my life and not actually living it? Why me? Why? Why me? Why is this happening? Why? Stop. Let's take a moment. Most of our thought forms are created when we are kids. Thought forms are essentially our patterns of thinking that are made from our beliefs. Now, These beliefs, They're created from the experiences we have early on in our life. And as we go as adults, They become fixed beliefs. What generally happens is we go through life creating circumstances to prove these beliefs to be true. We create a narrative or a story about situations. The narrative varies from person to person. That's why when we argue, We find it hard to see eye to eye. Each person has a different story or narrative going on in their minds. These thoughts are often quite loud and block us from actually living. We tend to develop a mechanic way on processing the moments in everyday life. I mean, I buy a coffee every day. I take the first sip and it's heaven. But I can't remember drinking the rest of it because I'm too busy thinking of the things I need to do or places I need to be. See, Right now, You're listening to my voice. And if you're still here, It means that something I have said has resonated with you on some level. Buddhists say that our thoughts and beliefs create our reality. We're all aware of what we think and believe, Right? So, If we'd have an idea of how life is going to turn out then, Then why are we so upset when things change? The Journey Show. Everyone has a story. Sometimes you just have to ask the right questions. I'm here with one of the top leadership experts in the world, Sebastian. Sebastian, What do you think? Do you think we have some idea of how life is going to turn out? That's a very interesting question. I would say yes, Especially if you are an ambitious person, Person who has goals, Who is determined, Who wants to achieve things in life and has positive thinking, I believe. You kind of know how your life is going to be overall because you plan around it, You work for it, And you prepare yourself for challenges to an extent. But yes, There are things which are out of your control, Things which you cannot, You just don't have control of and you can't just change or manipulate how they're going to be because they involve other people, They involve other circumstances and external things. And Kate, How about you? You're always out there socialising, Styling and creating something. How are you with change? I like to think I welcome change, But I do have moments of resistance. I am a bit of a control freak. Yes, I'll admit it, I am a control freak. I can usually go with the flow of change and work with what's happening, What the change is. But every now and then the universe throws me a curve ball to show who's in charge and it's totally not me and I do have that moment of freak out. But I'm very adaptable when it comes to change. I think as a creative you have to be and I just kind of roll with the punches. But I think it's like keeping your head floating above water. You know, You're in control, Like even though it could be a crazy river that you're floating down, You know, Keep your head above the water and you're alright. The Ginny Show. There are worse things to be stuck on an island with. Our beliefs and the narratives that we wrap around them are formed at a very young age. If you could go back in time and sit with your five year old self, What would you say to them? Yeah Ginny, Do I get a Ninja Turtle? What you got? Please don't tell me any more sneeze jokes. How would you change their beliefs about life and more importantly their beliefs about themselves? Imagine if we could go to a magical park bench or your favorite childhood spot and sit with your five year old self. Your five year old self never really leaves you. We all have an in a child. It's that part of us that likes to have fun, Giggle, Goof around and also that part of us that is cranky, Restless and needs to be looked after. They're always there. But as we get older and the responsibilities fall on us, We tend to neglect them. As an adult, When you don't listen to your in a child, They'll find a way to take care of themselves. And it's not always the best. They are children after all. They'll throw tantrums, Be sad, Maybe turn to alcohol, They'll self medicate, Eat those extra doughnuts just to make themselves feel better or feel heard. When you're at work punching away on the computer. You haven't played with me in a whole week. Can we do something fun please? When you're too busy checking emails and taking clients out. Can we please go play with Chingaling? She's so funny. When your alarm goes off after three hours sleep. What? Again? I told you I'm tired. I want to sleep. I'm going to give you a call. I'm hungry. I'm bored. I'm tired. We don't do anything fun anymore. Why did you leave me? I'm not your friend anymore. I want to go home. I don't like you. Go away. I want my bottle. And before you know it, Your life is not the way you thought it would be. We all start off as someone's kid. How do we look after our in a child? Hit that snooze button once in a while. Go for that run. Laugh with that friend. Unplug from this digital era. Call your best friend. Meditate. Take that dance class you've always wanted. Catch that plane. Marvel at something every day. Like it's the first time you've seen it. And it's the most amazing thing that you've laid eyes on. That's what children do, Right? What would I tell my five-year-old self? So what? You didn't get that promotion. He didn't call. Maybe it hurts you went through that divorce. And that's when I think of what Ami said. Be grateful for the things you don't have. Because there is a reason for it. Maybe you didn't get that promotion. Because that path of rejection led you to the job that made your heart sing. He didn't call you back. Because you needed to make room for the love of your life. Maybe she broke your heart so that you could hit rock bottom and have no choice but to go within. Because you needed to learn to love yourself first before you could love anyone else. It's very easy to be grateful for what you have. But what you don't have? The challenges it brings you. It's hard to find the positive in them sometimes. But if you can accept every change, Every challenge, Everything that may create a deep anxiety in the pit of your stomach, With openness, And just trust the universe and say, Thank you for this, You'll go into the next chapter that awaits you with far more ease. Note to self, You may have some idea of how life is going to turn out. But if it doesn't, If a change comes about, Please don't worry. The universe has got you. So relax. Nothing is under control.
