Imagine you are about to reply to a message.
Your chest tight.
Your fingers ready to sense something sharp,
Something honest,
And something you will definitely regret later.
Hi,
I am a psychologist from India and let me tell you why this happens.
That rush you feel,
That's your amygdala responding before your thinking brain is fully active.
Your brain goes like,
Something's wrong,
Just protect yourself.
So it pushes you to respond quickly,
Defensively,
And very loudly.
Before you blame yourself,
Let me tell you,
It's not that you're overreacting.
The science behind this is that your brain reacts even before it gets the time to think.
Now what can we do about it?
Here is the tip.
Before typing that another word,
Just inhale for 3 seconds and exhale.
Exhale for four seconds.
You can decide if you want to keep your eyes open or closed.
You can start doing that once and over the period of time you can increase the frequency.
This 3 by 4 technique is a variation to the usual box breathing technique that we know about.
When we take this pause,
Our nervous system sends a signal saying we are safe.
Your emotions.
Calm down just enough.
For your clarity to return.
How will it help in the long term?
Use the soften.
And you'll stop reacting from impulse.
But you learn to respond from awareness.
Which is the basic rule for mindfulness.
And a superpower for any relationship,
Be it with yourself or with the other person that you're talking on the other end of the line.
This practice will take some time.
But for it to become your superpower,
You will have to come back to it daily and practice.
