Hawaiian dreams On a small island where the ocean sang lullabies and the palm trees swayed like gentle dancers,
There lived a sea turtle named Lani.
Lani's name meant heaven in Hawaiian,
And everyone agreed it suited her perfectly.
She moved through the water with such grace,
Such peace,
That watching her swim felt like meditation.
But Lani had a secret.
Every afternoon,
When the sun was warm and golden,
She would swim to a hidden cove,
Where the water was the colour of turquoise dreams.
And there she would float on her back and imagine.
She imagined she could fly through the sky,
Like the seabirds.
She imagined she could sing,
Like the whales.
She imagined she could dance on the waves,
Like the dolphins.
One particularly beautiful day,
When the water sparkled like liquid diamonds,
And the wind carried the scent of flowers,
Lani swam to her special cove.
She floated on her back,
Closed her eyes,
And let herself dream.
She didn't notice the old monk seal watching her from a sunny rock nearby.
He looks so peaceful,
The seal said gently.
Lani's eyes opened,
And she smiled at the visitor.
I was dreaming,
She said.
I could tell you were glowing,
The seal's whiskers twitched with warmth.
I'm Makana,
I've been coming to this cove for forty years,
And I've never seen anyone float quite as peacefully as you do.
Really?
Lani felt a little flutter of happiness.
Really?
You look like you've found something precious.
Makana shifted on his rock,
Settling into a more comfortable position.
What do you dream about?
Lani hesitated,
And decided to share.
I dream about experiencing life in different ways.
Flying,
Singing,
Dancing.
It's not because I'm unhappy being a turtle.
I love being a turtle.
But there's so much beauty in the world,
And I want to feel all of it.
Makana's eyes crinkled with joy.
Ah,
You have an aloha spirit.
A heart that embraces everything,
With love and wonder.
That's a beautiful gift.
But I can't actually do those things,
Lani said.
I can't fly,
Or sing,
Or.
.
.
Can't you?
Makana gently interrupted.
Close your eyes again.
Float.
And this time,
Instead of just imagining,
Really feel it.
Lani closed her eyes and let herself float.
The sun warmed her shell.
The water held her like loving arms.
And as she relaxed completely,
Something magical began to happen.
She felt the water moving beneath her flippers,
And suddenly,
She wasn't just floating,
She was flying.
Flying through liquid sky.
Soaring through the blue,
Weightless and free as a bird.
The sensation was so real,
So perfect,
That her heart filled with pure joy.
I'm flying,
She whispered.
Yes,
Makana said softly.
You are,
Because flying is about freedom,
And you,
Floating in the ocean you love,
You're as free as anything in the sky.
Lani opened her eyes,
And everything looked different.
The water wasn't just water,
It was her sky,
Her heaven,
Her endless blue world,
Where she could soar and glide and dance through liquid light.
A pod of dolphins appeared,
Leaping and spinning through the waves nearby,
And Lani found herself swimming with them.
Moving in ways she'd never moved before.
You're dancing,
One of the young dolphins called,
Clicking with delight.
And Lani realised she was.
Her flippers weren't just paddling,
They were expressing joy,
Creating patterns in the water.
Painting invisible pictures with her movements.
She was dancing her own dance,
Turtle style,
And it was beautiful.
The dolphins chaired and spun around her,
And together they created a ballet in the blue.
Each creature moving in their own way,
Each one celebrating life.
After the dolphins waved goodbye and disappeared into deeper water,
Lani floated back to the surface,
Overflowing with joy and happiness.
Did you see?
She asked Nakana.
I was dancing.
I saw,
Nakana said,
His voice warm as sunshine.
Now listen.
Lani listened.
She heard the waves gently touching the shore,
Swish,
Pause,
Like a rhythm,
Like a heartbeat.
She heard the wind moving through the palm trees.
She heard her own breath,
Calm and peaceful.
And under it all,
She heard something else,
A deep resonant sound that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
It was the ocean itself,
Humming,
Singing,
Creating,
A song that had been playing since the beginning of time.
The ocean is singing,
Lani said.
It always has been,
Nakana nodded,
And you're part of that song.
Every time you breathe,
Every time you move,
You add your own note to the music.
You are singing,
Lani.
You always have been.
Lani felt tears of joy slip into the salt water around her.
She'd been looking for magic in faraway things,
In wings and voices different from her own,
When the magic had been right here all along,
In this moment,
Where she was.
Thank you,
She said to Nakana.
Nakana replied,
Thank you for reminding me to notice the beauty.
Sometimes we forget to see with wonder.
He brought that back to me today.
As the afternoon light turned golden and soft,
More creatures began to gather in the cove.
A sea turtle elder drifted over.
A school of bright yellow tangs swam through,
Their colours glowing like pieces of sunshine.
A sea bear landed on a rock and tucked its wings,
Content to simply be.
They all floated together in the warm,
Gentle water,
Not talking much,
Just being present,
Each one different,
Each one belonging,
Each one adding their own special something to the magic of the moment.
Lani looked around at her friends,
At the golden light on the water,
At the green mountains behind the beach,
At the sky beginning to change colour with the first hints of beautiful pink sunset.
This is heaven,
She said softly.
Yes,
Nakana agreed,
His ancient voice like waves on sand.
Heaven is a place you notice,
It's right here,
Right now,
In this present moment.
As the sun began its slow journey toward the horizon,
Painting the sky in shades of mango and guava and hibiscus,
The creatures in the cove all floated together in peaceful silence.
Lani closed her eyes and felt everything at once,
The water holding her,
The sun warming her,
Her friends nearby,
Her heart full of gratitude and wonder and love.
She was flying through her ocean sky,
She was dancing her gentle turtle dance,
She was singing her part in the great song of the sea.
That evening,
As the stars began to glow,
Lani swam slowly back to her resting place in the reef.
She settled onto the soft sand,
Tucked her flippers close,
Feeling the loving embrace of the sea.
She let the ocean rock her,
The stars watch over her,
Her heart be as light as flowers floating on the breeze.
The voice of the ocean quietly sang to her,
Aloha,
Dear one,
You are loved by the land and the sea and the sky and you are perfect just as you are.
Rest peacefully,
Just float,
Just breathe,
Just be,
The islands are dreaming with you.
She fell into a deep sleep.
Goodnight.
